Off To A Poor Start: The Role Of Childhood Adversity In Employee Burnout, Turnover, Commitment, And Counterproductive Behavior, Baylor Graham May 2021

Off To A Poor Start: The Role Of Childhood Adversity In Employee Burnout, Turnover, Commitment, And Counterproductive Behavior, Baylor Graham

All Theses

Despite the abundance of interdisciplinary research on childhood adversity, the topic has been largely neglected as it relates to occupational health. However, this understudied area has important implications for both research and practice. Using the Matthew Effect and Conservation of Resources Theory as a foundation, the present study investigated the relationship between childhood adversity and adult work-related outcomes. The literature on childhood adversity suggests that adverse experiences as a child such as abuse, or poverty accumulate and result in adults who are at a disadvantage in many ways such as in their interpersonal relationships, occupational and educational success, and mental …

“You're In A Cult, Call Your Dad.” An Investigation Into The True Crime Podcast My Favorite Murder And Its Online Fan Communities, Kelsea Sierra Schulenberg

All Theses

The interest many women have in true crime has recently received widespread attention in popular media. For instance, a Saturday Night Live sketch that aired in late February of 2021 featured women singing about how their favorite way to unwind is to tune into the latest murder documentary or podcast. A leader in this true crime revolution, My Favorite Murder (MFM) is a true crime comedy podcast whose fan base—known as Murderinos—is massive in size and in passion. Despite the enormous popularity of true crime podcasts like MFM or Serial, research on true crime podcasts and their online fan …

Interrupting The Narrative: Reader Emapthy And Authorial Resistance In Gayl Jones’S Corregidora And Brit Bennett’S The Vanishing Half, Allison Daniel May 2021

Interrupting The Narrative: Reader Emapthy And Authorial Resistance In Gayl Jones’S Corregidora And Brit Bennett’S The Vanishing Half, Allison Daniel

All Theses

In recent years, there has been a conversation about whether or not narrative theory, and particularly narratology, are fields that are worth pursuing in the modern academy. With narrative theory’s intense focus on categories and binaries, it has fallen out of fashion as fields such as feminism and queer studies have begun to grow rapidly and expose the fluidity of these categories. Theorists such as Robyn Warhol and Susan Lanser have strived to find ways that narrative theory can co-exist and even enrich these newer fields of study while simultaneously learning from them. In this essay, I suggest that one …

Gender Differences In The Effects Of Complementary Versus Competitive Gender Stereotypes On System Justification And Tolerance Of Sexism, Jordyn Bingham May 2021

Gender Differences In The Effects Of Complementary Versus Competitive Gender Stereotypes On System Justification And Tolerance Of Sexism, Jordyn Bingham

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Research has shown that people often support social systems that are not in their best interests (Kay & Jost, 2003). One way that people may justify support for such social systems is by focusing on beneficial characteristics. For example, people exhibit greater system justification when people are described as poor but happy (complementary attributes) as opposed to poor and unhappy (non-complementary attributes) (Kay & Jost, 2003). The present study examined the effects of complementary (i.e., that women and men fulfill different career roles) versus competitive (i.e., that women and men compete for the same career roles) gender stereotypes on women’s …

The Cost Of Crime: A Study On Human Trafficking, Kirsten Krug May 2021

The Cost Of Crime: A Study On Human Trafficking, Kirsten Krug

Applied Economics Theses

Human trafficking is a billion dollar industry that impacts hundreds of thousands of individuals each year. Each year the United States alone spends millions of dollars on law enforcement programs designated to combat human trafficking.

This thesis examines the impact of those programs as deterrents for individuals who are willing to commit this type of violent crime, as well as why they might commit crime in the first place. In addition to providing an economic analysis of the impact of arrest and jail as deterrents on trafficking, the thesis will also look into what may cause an individual to fall …

The Mediating Role Of Self-Blame In The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Bystander Intervention And Ptsd Symptoms Following A Sexual Assault, Hannah Sawyer May 2021

The Mediating Role Of Self-Blame In The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Bystander Intervention And Ptsd Symptoms Following A Sexual Assault, Hannah Sawyer

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Introduction: Sexual assault (SA) incidents are common. One in five women will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime (NSVRC, 2015); some will experience Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of SA experiences (Resnick et al., 1993). Further, approximately two-thirds of all cases of sexual assault involve consumption of alcohol by the victim, perpetrator, or both (Testa & Livingston, 2009). Previous research has been dedicated to delineating cognitive and situational factors surrounding SA occurrences that contribute to risk for developing PTSD (Jaffe et al., 2013; Peter-Hagene & Ullman, 2018). Peter-Hagene and Ullman (2018) found that SA survivors that engage in more self-blame …

The Development And Validation Of Implicit Measures Of Job Satisfaction For Students, Xin Wei Ong May 2021

The Development And Validation Of Implicit Measures Of Job Satisfaction For Students, Xin Wei Ong

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Job satisfaction is one of the most researched topics in industrial-organizational psychology and explicit (self-report) measures are the most common assessment method. However, self-report measures are contaminated by inaccurate self-knowledge and impression management artifacts, which may weaken the predictive validity of the measures. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) might address these limitations because the procedure is based on reaction times in classification tasks. This research developed personalized implicit measures of job satisfaction using IATs and investigated their construct validity in a college sample. The construct validity of the measures was investigated with a multitrait-multimethod design. Results indicated problems with some …

Terrorism, Trauma, And Memory: Constructing National Identity At The 9/11 Museum And The Oklahoma City National Memorial And Museum, Caroline L. Whittenburg May 2021

Terrorism, Trauma, And Memory: Constructing National Identity At The 9/11 Museum And The Oklahoma City National Memorial And Museum, Caroline L. Whittenburg

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis undertakes an analysis of the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the 9/11 Museum in New York City, New York, focusing on the construction of an idealized citizen that is mobilized as a defense against terrorist threats. Employing rhetorical field methods, I focus on how these spaces work symbolically and materially to shape visitors’ sense of national identity. I pay careful attention to how message construction relates to whether the terrorist threat is framed as internal or external, and how that influences what it means to be American. This argument is grounded through …

Geospatial Analysis Of Registered Sex Offenders: A Case Study From Pulaski County, Arkansas, Maggie Rose Bridges

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this case study was to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of the residences of registered sex offenders in Pulaski County, Arkansas to determine the impact of state enforced residence restrictions. Density and clustering factors were used to identify census tracts of the study area with high and low concentrations of offenders. These zones were then compared to identify which characteristics were similar and dissimilar between high and low concentration zones. The results indicate that there is a non-random distribution of registered sex offenders in the study area. The findings also indicate that the residence restrictions placed on …

Ephemeral Existence: Tracing Early Twentieth Century Tattoos And Perceptions Of Identity Within The New Orleans Police Department Mugshot Collection, Kaylie M. Mccarthy

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

People have long used tattoos as markers of identification. However, there remain limited scholarly studies on the history of tattoos within the city of New Orleans. This thesis argues that through analysis of the tattoos recorded in the New Orleans Police Department Mugshot Collection, it is possible to situate the early twentieth century arrested population within a greater societal context, allowing for the intimate details of individual lives and personal stories to come to the forefront. Through the synthesis of demographic data from the 152 mugshots that pertain to tattooed arrestees, and three case studies on arrestees with patriotic, nautical, …

This study analyzed the perspectives of leisure-based esports participants from a Facebook group dedicated to a popular fighting game as esports. This study used a grounded theoretical approach, and several orienting theories/concepts (Serious Leisure, Recreation Specialization, social worlds, and the performance ethic) were used to study socialization into – and through – leisure-based esports participation. Based on ten interviews conducted from September through October 2020, this study found that if individuals were introduced to esports from the performance ethic, they tended to be socialized into social themes associated with the activity and vice versa. Through esports, participants were taught thoughts, …

Considerations For Science Communications In A Changing Media Landscape, Emily Stine May 2021

Considerations For Science Communications In A Changing Media Landscape, Emily Stine

Doctor of Plant Health Program: Dissertations and Student Research

Technology development has radically shaped science communication techniques. Science communicators should be prepared to face these changes as they provide valuable new methods for increased engagement. Currently, communicators rely on deficit models (top-down transmission) and dialogic models (bottom-up transmission) to present information. The decision on which model to use is reliant upon the communicator’s skill level and impression of the relationship between scientists and the general public. Developing effective communication relies on communicators determining goals (long-term aspirations) and objectives (short-term aspirations) while maintaining a clear view of the public’s attitudes and evaluation frames. The tools available to science communicators and …

From Starter To Finish: Learning The Literacy Of Sourdough, Molly Mcconnell May 2021

From Starter To Finish: Learning The Literacy Of Sourdough, Molly Mcconnell

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Using the New Literacy Studies and the work of James Paul Gee, the process of making sourdough bread is conceptualized as a literacy, which is then located within food literacy. The literacy of sourdough offers an alternative to neoliberal discourse. The literacy is linked to the rise in popularity of sourdough during the COVID-19 pandemic and is used to explore Bourdieu’s cultural capital. It also connects, rhizomatically (Deleuze and Guattari), and is used to explore concepts of interdependence and time. After establishing this literacy, a pedagogically- focused essay draws upon ecocomposition to expand on what a composition process would look …

The Relationship Between Quality Of Life, Extreme Climatological Conditions And Social Unrest In India, Daniel Schaefer May 2021

The Relationship Between Quality Of Life, Extreme Climatological Conditions And Social Unrest In India, Daniel Schaefer

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Scholars have grown increasingly interested in the association between climate conditions and social unrest. Though no consensus exists regarding the specific mechanisms that connect both phenomena, scholars have found a links between rising temperatures, precipitation, or the magnitude of disasters and social unrest. However, is unclear to what extent deviations from historical trends rather than absolute levels might serve as important indicators of unrest. Moreover, it remains unclear how effectively socio-demographic factors like quality of life and ethno-religious fragmentation can explain trends on unrest, net of climatological indicators. This project tests the extent to which deviation from historical trends in …

Veritas At Harvard, Alfred John Zucker May 2021

Veritas At Harvard, Alfred John Zucker

LMU Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research paper is to analyze a historical, theological subject concerning the rationale for the transition from a Puritanical view of God at Harvard in the early seventeenth century to a Utilitarian perspective in the first part of the nineteenth century. The Puritans had a profound effect on Harvard, bringing with them severe discipline and an authoritarian view of God. As a result, many of the first Harvard students left the college never to return,[1] and the school had significant difficulties in maintaining an enrollment in its early years. Puritanism viewed students as being essentially depraved …

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Police Officer Acquittals: Jurors' Explicit And Implicit Racism, Donovan Corson Kelley May 2021

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Police Officer Acquittals: Jurors' Explicit And Implicit Racism, Donovan Corson Kelley

Doctoral Dissertations

Less than .001% of cases involving police officers killing suspects result in trial convictions; acquittals are significantly higher for Black victims than for White victims. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine if explicit and implicit racism amongst jurors helped explain why police officers are rarely convicted of murder, especially in cases with Black victims. In a pilot study in which mock jurors read a trial summary involving an officer killing an unarmed victim who was either Black or White, jurors were more likely acquit officers on trial for killing a Black victim than a White victim. In Study …

Justice System Outcomes Of Children Referred For Sexual Offenses, Kei Saito May 2021

Justice System Outcomes Of Children Referred For Sexual Offenses, Kei Saito

Doctoral Dissertations

The proliferation of increasingly punitive sex crime legislation in the United States have extended to include children adjudicated of sexual offenses. Using data from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, this dissertation examined the impact of three factors on sentencing outcomes for children referred for illegal sexual behaviors: race, same-sex victim, and county of referral. (1) Black children were disproportionately arrested for sexual offenses compared to any other racial/ethnic group. However, Black children in the sample were less likely to face harsher outcomes compared to Caucasian children, such as adjudication and ordered to register as a sex offender. (2) Children …

Broadly-Based Graduate School Sponsored Communication Skills Programs: A Study In Three Essays Of Programs And Perceptions Of The Diversification Of Career Pathways, Jovana Milosavljevic Ardeljan

Doctoral Dissertations

It has been asserted that communication skills play a critical role in success in a job (What is technical writing?, n.d.). Traditional graduate training prepares students for communication within their field of study; however, it often fails to provide skill development opportunities needed for addressing more general audiences (Coleman, 2018). This research focuses on broadly-based oral and written communication programs which help graduate students to learn to write and orally communicate more effectively to different audiences for different purposes, in and outside of academia, enabling them to explain clearly what they do and why it matters.Using archival analysis and interviews, …

Diversity In The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children In The Us, Brianna Ferreira May 2021

Diversity In The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children In The Us, Brianna Ferreira

Master's Theses and Capstones

Researchers have examined the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), however, they tend to focus on a stereotypical victim. Little research exists on the diversity of CSEC, and the various forms that it can encompass. This secondary data analysis examines the diversity in United States CSEC cases by using Mitchell, Finkelhor, and Wolak’s (2010) National Juvenile Prostitution Study (NJPS) case narratives. The current study uses thematic analysis to analyze the 132 NJPS case narratives. Seven major overarching themes of diversity emerged throughout the research process: (1) Facilitator/Relationship of Facilitator and Dynamics, (2) Gender of Juvenile, (3) Reason for Engagement: Risk …

A New Compact For Sexual Privacy, Danielle Keats Citron May 2021

A New Compact For Sexual Privacy, Danielle Keats Citron

William & Mary Law Review

Intimate life is under constant surveillance. Firms track people’s periods, hot flashes, abortions, sexual assaults, sex toy use, sexual fantasies, and nude photos. Individuals hardly appreciate the extent of the monitoring, and even if they did, little could be done to curtail it. What is big business for firms is a big risk for individuals. Corporate intimate surveillance undermines sexual privacy—the social norms that manage access to, and information about, human bodies, sex, sexuality, gender, and sexual and reproductive health. At stake is sexual autonomy, self-expression, dignity, intimacy, and equality. So are people’s jobs, housing, insurance, and other life opportunities. …

The entrance of the Millennial generation into the nursing workforce signifies a bright future for the nursing profession and the nursing workforce. This study began with a current review of available research that identified the Millennial generation and their views toward job satisfaction and work engagement, as compared with Baby Boomer and Generation X nurses.

PubMed, CINAHL Complete, and Google Scholar databases were employed to find 15 peer-reviewed articles for evaluation. The research findings suggest that Millennial nurses have lower rates of job satisfaction and work engagement, compared to nurses of older generations. Overall, the extracted data results were significant …

Corporatizing Administrative Law For Economic Constitutionalism In Ghana: An African Legal Study, Rowland Atta-Kesson May 2021

Corporatizing Administrative Law For Economic Constitutionalism In Ghana: An African Legal Study, Rowland Atta-Kesson

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

As the Government of Ghana partners the private sector to promote district industrialization in Ghana under what is locally called “one-district-one factory” (1D1F), this study argues that it is important to foster economic constitutionalism with legal and institutional innovations. One such innovation is this study’s emergent or grounded theory of corporatized administrative law. The study is unique because it contributes to the so-called new administrative law theory with fresh evidence from Ghana on the interface between the public and private sectors under the district industrialization program. The key problem is the challenge that democratic policy discontinuity poses to business protection …

A Narrative Critique Of The Film Loving (2016): How Narratives Help Us Understand Standpoint And Social Change, Chesney Jo Garnos

Dissertations and Theses

ABSTRACT The film Loving (2016) portrays the true story of the Loving v. Virginia (1967) plaintiffs in a narrative that individualizes the struggle against institutionalized oppression through a story of a couple’s love. This paper will show how (1) the narrative elements in the film Loving (2016) combine to influence the viewer’s understanding of social acceptance of interracial marriage in the United States; (2) the film’s depiction of Mildred Loving’s role in advocating for interracial marriage demonstrates the significant tenets of standpoint theory. This paper uses narrative criticism (Fisher, 1985) as a method of analysis and feminist standpoint theory (Harding, …

Conducting Research In Indigenous Communities: Recommendations For Research Partnerships, Sheena Gilbert, Emily M. Wright, Raquel Deherrera, Tara Richards May 2021

Conducting Research In Indigenous Communities: Recommendations For Research Partnerships, Sheena Gilbert, Emily M. Wright, Raquel Deherrera, Tara Richards

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Before conducting research in an Indigenous community, a researcher, especially a non-Indigenous researcher, must recognize and acknowledge not only the historical impact research has had on Indigenous communities but the current impacts that arise when research is conducted in Indigenous communities. Specifically, one must consider settler colonialism and its continuing impact on Indigenous communities today. Professor of Indigenous Education Linda Tuhiwai Smith (2012) states: “The word itself, ‘research’, is probably one of the dirtiest words in the Indigenous world’s vocabulary”. Smith continues by linking research and Western imperialism and colonialism together, with research being a tool for imperialism and colonialism. …
