The Effect Of Cardiac Diseases On Cognitive Function, Sana Quaraishi
The Effect Of Cardiac Diseases On Cognitive Function, Sana Quaraishi
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In the United States, over thirty million Americans have received a heart disease diagnosis. The purpose of this work is to explore the lesser researched effects heart conditions have on other parts of the body, specifically regarding cognitive function. Using data with Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and older, individuals with a diagnosis of either heart disease or a heart attack were looked at to see what effect their heart condition(s) had on their cognitive function. This was determined through five tests, which assessed various cognitive abilities. The tests included a rating of participant’s own memory to obtain subjective data, asking …
Contrastive Analysis Predictions For Arabic Esl Learners’ Consonant Production, Sophia Radke
Contrastive Analysis Predictions For Arabic Esl Learners’ Consonant Production, Sophia Radke
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Native-level proficiency in a second language is difficult to attain, especially in pronunciation. Many learners have a “foreign accent” no matter how fluent they are. This paper focuses on the pronunciation (phonological) challenges that adult native speakers of Arabic experience with the consonants of American English. The study applies the predictions of the Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, which claims that a language learner will have the most difficulty pronouncing sounds that are most different from any sounds that exist in their first language. The findings are that Arabic speakers will have no problem pronouncing sounds that exist in both languages, but …

Effects Of Retail Case Environment And Led Lighting Temperature On Color Of Ground Beef Patties, Mesa Kutz
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The objective of this study was to explore different type of retail cases and case environments, primarily lighting, to quantify the impact on shelf life. Coarse ground 80:20 beef from a local retail establishment was acquired between 7 and 10 d from the box date and fine ground through a 9.5 mm grinder plate, and then formed into 150.25 g patties with an automatic patty forming machine. Each patty was then individually packaged in PVC-overwrap packages and randomly assigned to one of the four different treatments: open, multideck cases with 3000 K lighting (OPEN3000),open 3500 K lighting (OPEN3500),enclosed, …

Perceptions And Content Of Traditional And Online News: An Analysis Of Bias In Indian Media, Sangya Tyagi
Communication Theses - Archive
The primary objective of this study was to compare and analyse two different points of view on media polarization: one, from the public’s perspective through a survey (analysis of their perceptions on news received from their preferred news sources) and the other, analysis of media published by the media content providers. Another research contribution of this study was that it included an analysis of the mode of media consumption, i.e., how the news was consumed--via traditional media or through online media. This project ties in a variety of aspects in the field of communication -- media, mode of news consumption, …
Environmental Racism In A Growing City: Investigating Demographic Shifts In Salt Lake City's Polluted Neighborhoods, Emma Nathel Jones
Environmental Racism In A Growing City: Investigating Demographic Shifts In Salt Lake City's Polluted Neighborhoods, Emma Nathel Jones
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Studies investigating the spatial distribution of environmental hazards have repeatedly demonstrated the existence of environmental racism -- the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards on communities of color. We aim to contribute to research on environmental racism by asking how relationships between race and hazard exposure change over time. Our study area, Salt Lake City (SLC), UT, USA is one of the largest cities in the intermountain west and is expected to see continued population growth. SLC was 99% white from 1860-1950. 2019 census estimates indicate that SLC is becoming more racially diverse with 35.6% of the population identifying as racial …
Pastoralism, Loss, And Nostalgia: Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending As An Elegy For Environmental Disruption, Kirsten Barker
Pastoralism, Loss, And Nostalgia: Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending As An Elegy For Environmental Disruption, Kirsten Barker
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The idea that music embodies meaning is largely accepted and uncontroversial. However, the way in which this relationship is articulated is complicated and contributes to music’s ability to project different meanings, especially according to time and place. Such is the case with the British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’s romance for violin and orchestra, The Lark Ascending (1920). This work contains both musical and extra musical traits that can be interpreted as pastoral and nostalgic. Understanding how these meanings interact through time provides the opportunity for reinterpretation of the work in the present through an environmentally-oriented framework. Previous research regarding The …
Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire
Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The choice of academic major and, subsequently, an academic institution has a massive effect on a person’s career. It not only determines their career path but their earning potential, professional happiness, etc. [1] About 40% of people who are admitted to a college do not graduate within six years. Yet, very limited resources are available for students to help make those decisions, and each guidance counselor is responsible for roughly 400 to 900 students across the United States. A tool to help these decisions would benefit students, parents, and guidance counselors.
Various research studies have shown that personality traits affect …

Transnational Writing Program Administration: Mobility, Entanglement, Work., Joseph Franklin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation advances the global turn in writing studies by examining academic mobilities through an ethnographic study of transnational writing program administrative (TWPA) work outside of the United States. The literature review reads global writing studies scholarship through a critical-transnational lens to locate the gap for new knowledge in TWPA work. Influenced by Dorothy Smith’s Institutional Ethnography, this dissertation grounds the findings of its interview-based study in the terms of everyday lived experiences by internationally mobile scholars currently doing WPA work in order to construct more nuanced narratives of navigation and sensemaking. Participants discussed the consequences and limitations of us/them …
Socializing Vacancy: An Architectural Thesis, Greg Winawer
Socializing Vacancy: An Architectural Thesis, Greg Winawer
Architecture Senior Theses
A large portion of office space has been left vacant, and thus provides no beneficial program to its remaining occupants or the local urbanity it is surrounded by. When considering what can be done with this vacant space, the primary motivation should be to integrate a program which does the opposite: a program which positively disrupts its existing context to hybridize and improve the current outdated programmatic arrangement. To insert a residential program into an existing office tower both disrupts and enhances the rigorous flows of our working and our domestic lives. The predefined universal concept of the ‘working-day’ is …

During the pandemic, routines were interrupted lives were changed and during this time, many individuals spent more time watching the news to learn more about how long it would take to resume normalcy. When George Floyd was murdered by four police officers, time stood still and the world watched. Outrage was immediate. The pandemic offered everyone the opportunity to witness tragedy unfold in front of them a brutality which happens every day, yet is easily ignored. This article examines the incidence of police homicides of people of color, the lack of law enforcement to seek solutions to their own internal …

Self-Continuity In Adolescence: A Buffer Against Decreases In Self-Esteem Due To Vicitmization, Gabriela Alvarez
Self-Continuity In Adolescence: A Buffer Against Decreases In Self-Esteem Due To Vicitmization, Gabriela Alvarez
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The purpose of this research was to explore how components of self-esteem, such as social, cognitive and physical competence, can explain the buffering effect of self-continuity. Self-continuity explains the associations between individuals themselves in both past and present and perceived sameness, despite growth and development of the self. As self-continuity becomes more complex throughout adolescence, children may find themselves lacking a sense of identity. Previous research shows that negative views of the self may later represent themselves in adulthood. There is evidence that suggests self-continuity protects against the negative effects of peer victimization by providing positive connections between one another. …

How Humans Made The Wilderness And Our Role In Protecting It: Invasive Milfoil And Wilderness Ideologies In Little Sebago Lake, Kassandra Wilson
Standard Theses
Humans have long negatively impacted the environment but within the last 100 years, there has come a new, very visible issue affecting recreational bodies of water in Maine; invasive species. Invasive species are plants or animals that have been brought to a place they are not native to by humans, and often devastate the new ecosystem. This is one of the greatest threats to Little Sebago Lake and many other bodies of water throughout New England. The invasive species of Variable Leaf Milfoil has infested Little Sebago for almost twenty years with no hope of ever totally removing it. Milfoil …

Organizational Role Conflict: The Lived Experience Of The Long-Term Department Chairperson In Higher Education, Susan M. Frey
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is a hermeneutic investigation into the phenomenon of organizational role conflict as experienced by five long-term department chairpersons, four long-term department heads, and two former long-term department chairpersons working at universities and colleges located in Indiana, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Organizational role conflict for department chairpersons and department heads is a byproduct of their frontline manager position. By occupying a position between the collegiate and administrative branches of their institution, these managers serve as an important link in the chain of command, but suffer from ambiguous, contradictory, and competing expectations placed on them because of their hybrid status as …

Education plays a critical role in the advancement and survival of ethnic minority children and youth. However, access to quality education still eludes many ethnic minority children as a result of instances of prejudice, institutional racism, and structural discrimination. Due to these obstacles, ethnic minority children and youth often lag behind their white peers in many social indicators including higher rates of poverty and lower educational attainment, which impedes their academic success and upward mobility. Several studies have applied technology interventions to address educational equity issues and found improved performance on state test scores. Therefore, this research examines the role …

Identifying And Measuring Environmental Stressors In Intimate Partner Violence Shelters, Sarah R. Leat
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Environmental stressors within the built environment can greatly impact health. Environmental stressors, such a noise levels, crowding, and housing quality have shown to impact physical healing as well as mental health. Although environmental stressors have been examined within healthcare environments, such as hospitals and clinics, very little research exists about the presence of environmental stressors within shelter environments. Furthermore, even less research has looked at environmental stressors present within intimate partner violence (IPV) shelters. The built environment of IPV shelters and environmental stressors present within the shelter have the potential to greatly impact survivors’ health and influence whether survivors gain …

The older population in the United States is growing. Within this demographic, ethnic and racial diversity is also on the rise. There are various forms of interventions, such as cognitive activities, regular physical and social activities, the Mediterranean diet, examination on sleep patterns, and other person-centered and emotion-focused interventions to help not only the cognitive health but also the overall quality of life of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD). However, we still lack knowledge on if and how these interventions are effective for patients from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, this study conducted a scoping review to review …

Skateboard Jesus, Kenley Alligood
All NMU Master's Theses
Skateboard Jesus is a collection of poetry written in mostly first and second person free verse, containing in addition some prose poems and other forms harder to categorize. The poetry in this collection is largely narrative in structure, and engages with themes of identity and performance as objects of its larger concern, often filtered through the lens of music. In addition, my work often focuses on religion, mental health, and gender and sexuality. This collection, by the very nature of its concerns, engages in discussions of performance theory. Performance and narrative are inseparable entities, permeating every facet of our existence …

Economic Feasibility Of Mixed Plastic Waste Pyrolysis Using Twin Reactor System In Northwest Arkansas, Carol Rogers, Patricia Means, Renato Gonzalez, Kaida Sheets, Hayden Townsend
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Plastic waste generation is increasing at an unsustainable rate while recycling solutions remain stagnant. As a chemical means of recycling, mixed plastic waste pyrolysis can generate synthetic oil appropriate for use as fuel in power generation from plastic waste that otherwise accumulates in landfills. With the scaling of a commercial plastic pyrolysis process in Northwest Arkansas (NWA) modeled after an operational sawdust pyrolysis unit in Huntsville, Arkansas, economic analysis resulted in 26.3% internal rate of return. Therefore, construction of a commercial mixed plastic-to-fuel pyrolysis plant is economically justified and should be pursued. To effectively implement the proposed design, NWA must …

The Fickle Financiers Of Elections?: The Impact Of Moving On Individual Contributions, Jaclyn J. Kettler, Jeffrey Lyons
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
What is the effect of a change in geographic location on the behavior of campaign donors? Looking at people who move presents a unique opportunity to assess the ways in which political behavior is altered by external circumstances. Holding the individual constant and observing how donation patterns vary under different external conditions allows us to explore donor behaviors in ways that are more difficult when using cross-sectional data. We use the DIME dataset to compare the donation behavior of over 7,000 individuals in the U.S. House election before and after they have moved. We observe the ways in which changes …
Effects Of Personal Relevance And Consensus Information On Feminist Self-Identification, Mary Allison Stazinski
Effects Of Personal Relevance And Consensus Information On Feminist Self-Identification, Mary Allison Stazinski
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Past research has identified several factors that contribute to the likelihood of a person self-identifying as a feminist. However, although prior work points to the importance of the perceived relevancy of the feminist movement and the public's consensus about it, previous research has not looked at these two factors specifically. Using an experimental methodological approach, the current study had participants read a news article about feminism that was either low or high in personal relevancy, followed by exposure to comments supposedly left by previous readers that suggested most others viewed feminism positively or negatively, after which participants reported to what …

Using in-depth qualitative interviews with French Caribbeans of African descent (N=52) in the Paris region, this study examines minority perspectives on the possibility of racial or ethnic affirmative action in France. Through a narrative analysis of their justifications for supporting or criticizing affirmative action, we find that the majority of our respondents expressed reservations over the possibility of quotas and other affirmative action initiatives, with many describing ambivalent views and mixed emotions. In explaining their discomfort with the idea and implementation of affirmative action, respondents point to concerns over the efficacy and legitimacy of such policies, a moral defense of …
