Giving A Listening Ear: Male Student Teachers’ Experiences And Perspectives Of Practicum Supervision, Keriffe R. Clark Jun 2021

Giving A Listening Ear: Male Student Teachers’ Experiences And Perspectives Of Practicum Supervision, Keriffe R. Clark

The Qualitative Report

Exploring the minute number of male teachers within the classroom is certainly not a new discourse as teaching has increasingly become a feminised profession. Therefore, as male student teachers take on the challenge of becoming teachers, it is imperative that we listen to them as they recount their supervision experiences. These experiences are significantly influenced and impacted by teacher educators and cooperating teachers who are tasked with the responsibility to provide high quality and effective supervision, especially during teaching practicum. Additionally, acknowledging that to attain positive outcomes attached to student teaching experiences, Hunt et al. (2015) have reasoned that teaching …

The Embodiment Of Discovery: An Adapted Framework For Qualitative Analysis Of Lived Experiences, Helen B. Hernandez, Laurie P. Dringus

The Qualitative Report

We reflect on our process of working with an adapted framework as an effective strategy for analyzing and interpreting the results of our qualitative study on the lived experiences of insulin pump trainers. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was applied as the overarching research methodology and was encapsulated into a framework adapted from Bonello and Meehan (2019) and from Chong (2019). We describe this framework as the “embodiment of discovery” to posit the researcher’s tangible experience of discovering the meaning of data that also brought transparency to the researcher’s process for data analysis and interpretation. We present challenges the doctoral student …

Questioning Standards Of Evaluation In Educational Research: Do Educational Researchers Ventriloquize Learners’ Voices In L2 Education?, Anastasia A. Boldireff Jun 2021

Questioning Standards Of Evaluation In Educational Research: Do Educational Researchers Ventriloquize Learners’ Voices In L2 Education?, Anastasia A. Boldireff

The Qualitative Report

Learners are not stakeholders in their own education. Adhering to the quantitative gold standard in English as a Second Language (ESL) deprives the learner from having a voice in their learning process. This paper addresses voicelessness and ventriloquism in ESL, ventriloquism referring to the act of voicing the thoughts of another person, in this case the system overriding the learners’ experiences. This article addresses this problem, aligning itself with the Platinum standard while challenging the quantitative gold standard in ESL research. This paper offers resonance and semantic reliability as evaluative measures in educational research taken from literary criticism. The notion …

Comparing Girls’ And Boys’ Lived Bodies Of Middle School Students In Self-Defense Utilizing Participant Observation, Giovanna Follo Jun 2021

Comparing Girls’ And Boys’ Lived Bodies Of Middle School Students In Self-Defense Utilizing Participant Observation, Giovanna Follo

The Qualitative Report

The Frailty Myth proposes that the female body can be frozen, restricted by the ever present negative gendered narrative perpetuated by society. Embodiment occurs when the female body is thawed. The opposite can be argued for boys. Boys are taught to live their bodies, that is they have a sense of embodiment. Therefore, boys do not have to concern themselves with thawing their bodies as they already experience their bodies in strong and liberal ways. In this study, I compare how girls and boys live their bodies utilizing participant observation. Six themes emerged: being the instructor, gendered discourse in action, …

Neoliberalism, Civic Identity, And Resistance: An Ethnographic Case Study Of A Community Development Organization, Erin Layne Elliott

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the marketization of the nonprofit sector and how it has come to operate in more business-like ways has been well documented in recent years. This research has largely focused on how marketization has pervaded the nonprofit sector, yet little research has been done on how business-like values and modes of acting are manifesting in nonprofits. Even less understood are the impacts marketization may have on foundational civic values in the nonprofit sector. As marketized discourses proliferate, concerns have been raised about threats to nonprofit autonomy and the sector's important civic role. This dissertation aims to fill this gap …

Law and Society Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant education disruption in Ontario. This has included mass and localized school closures, multiple models of educational provision and gaps in support for students with disabilities. The unequal distribution of school closures and pandemic- associated hardships, particularly affecting low-income families in which racialized and Indigenous groups, newcomers and people with disabilities are overrepresented, appear to be deepening and accelerating inequities in education outcomes, wherever data have been collected. Further, there are health risks associated with closures including significant physical, mental health and safety harms for students and children. Modelling suggests long-term impacts on students’ …

Southeast Asian American Students' Perceptions On Influential Faculty Practices On Belonging At A Community College, Pamela J. Yang

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify how faculty perceive their classroom interactions and practices influence sense of belonging for Southeast Asian American students. Research focusing on the sense of belonging in an institution has increased in the recent years and has been identified as a factor in the retention and persistence of college students. Feeling a sense of belonging is important when working with populations of underserved and underrepresented populations. The SEAA population is important because they have been lost in the shadow of the “model minority myth”, assuming to be successful in navigating higher education, while in …

The Digital Divide And Health: Examining Digital Access As A Social Determinant Of Health, Elizabeth Melissa Withers

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is comprised of three papers that consider ways in which one's level of digital access may impact self-rated health. Data are from multiple years of three separate nationally representative cross-sectional surveys: National Health Interview Survey, General Social Survey, and Health Information National Trends Survey to address the primary overarching research question: Is there an association between digital access and health? The examination of the relationship between digital access and health is situated within a social determinants of health perspective and draws on van Dijk's (2005) causal and sequential model of digital access. Education, income, race and ethnicity, work …

The terminology was adjusted and ‘integrated’ became ‘inclusive’, and ‘Special Educational Needs and / or Disability (SEND)’ replaced ‘disability’ in a novel ‘Concerns about Inclusive Education Scale’. A purposive sample included the public and private education sectors. An online questionnaire was completed in April 2020 (n = 93) by teachers (66: state mainstream, 18: independent, 5: UK-based international schools, 3: SEND specialists, 1: alternative provision). Statistical analysis of closed questions aimed to identify teachers’ concerns about …

Power And Punishment: An Intellectual Biography Of Michel Foucault, Maria Gregg, Elvena Gevargiz, Brittany Gillingham, Sarah Glasser

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

The French post-structuralist thinker, Michel Foucault, was a philosopher, psychologist, historian and sociologist. He combined this interdisciplinary knowledge to theorize new conceptualizations of discipline, power, and knowledge and their implications for ideas of human bodies, sex, and sexuality, all of which culminated in his overarching quest to investigate the production of truth. Foucault examined how institutions and people regulate bodies, both their own and those of others, in society and rooted his theories in examples of the institutions and discourses of his time while channeling experiences from his own identity as a disciplinary scholar and gay man. Deviating from conflict …

Surveillance In The New Jim Crow Era, Madison Hoffman Jun 2021

Surveillance In The New Jim Crow Era, Madison Hoffman

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

Modern American society is plagued with the features of the New Jim Crow era, a term first coined by Michelle Alexander. The mass incarceration of Black Americans continues to be wrongly justified and disregarded. This New Jim Crow era is characterized by the increased suspicion, policing, and incarceration of Black Americans. This article aims to build off Alexander's term to identify the role of surveillance and advancing surveillance technologies like police-worn body cameras, facial recognition, and social media surveillance on the increasing …

Work-Life Balance And Satisfaction With Family Life: A Methodological Analysis, Anjali Rangaswami Jun 2021

Work-Life Balance And Satisfaction With Family Life: A Methodological Analysis, Anjali Rangaswami

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

Balancing work duties and family responsibilities is an ongoing struggle for many American adults. As work is a crucial aspect of maintaining a family unit, an individual's level of work-life balance may affect how they feel about their family life. This raises the question, is there an association between Americans' work-life balance and their satisfaction with family life? To address this question, a sample of 809 American adult respondents was drawn from the International Social Survey Program's (ISSP) Family and Changing Gender Roles Module. The variable of worklife balance was measured by asking respondents how often in the past three …
