After escaping the assassination of the Umayyad royal family in Damascus, a member of this family, Abd al-Rahman I, fled to the Iberian Peninsula to establish a new Umayyad Empire (756-1492 AD). Famous for its pluralistic polity, unparalleled scholarship, artistic prowess, and more, this empire rightfully established itself as a powerful political force. Many scholars emphasize the unique convivencia, or coexistence, that characterized Islamic Spain during these centuries while others thoroughly question this reality, concerned that it ignores the cultural strain that is inevitable in such a diverse society. In this essay, we find ourselves balancing a middle position, recognizing …

Internalized Consensual Non-Monogamy Negativity And Relationship Quality Among People Engaged In Polyamory, Swinging, And Open Relationships, Amy C. Moors, Heath A. Schechinger, Rhonda Balzarini, Sharon Flicker
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Drawing on an internalized homonegativity and minority stress framework, the present study sought to address whether people engaged in consensual non-monogamy (CNM) internalize stigma toward their relationship style, and if internalized CNM negativity is associated with poorer relationship quality and functioning. We recruited a community sample of 339 people engaged in CNM (open, swinging, or polyamorous relationship) with at least two concurrent partners. Participants completed a newly developed measure of internalized CNM negativity (which assessed personal discomfort, social discomfort, and public identification) and four measures of relationship quality for each partner. Regression analyses showed that personal discomfort with CNM (e.g., …

Efl Learners’ Multiple Identities Constructions In Relation To Global Positions Of English, Farah Anjanillah, Ribut Wahyudi, Syafiyah Syafiyah
The Qualitative Report
In English as Foreign Language (EFL) learning, the learners’ identities have been intriguing to be explored by the linguists. Norton (2010) argues English learning does not deal with knowledge and skill acquisition alone, instead it also comprises a complex process of the learners’ identities, constructions, and reconstructions. Hence, English learning enables the shaping of English learners’ multiple identities. This study was conducted in one of the Islamic universities (IU) in Malang, Indonesia. The multilingual and multicultural contexts of Indonesia is a crucial factor to conduct this study. These social conditions do also underpin the constructions of English learners’ multiple identities …

The Effect Of Librarians’ Happiness Program On The Quality Services Of Iranian Public Libraries From The Perspective Of The Users, Leili Seifi, Maryam Hassanzadeh, Mitra Rastgoumoghadam
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of librarians' happiness programs on the service quality from the perspective of Iranian public library users. To this end, 25 active users’ two libraries were randomly placed in the control and experimental groups. The result showed that although the theoretical part of the research could not achieve significant predicted results, the beginning and planning of applied and operational research fosters creativity and innovation in this social institution such as public libraries. Achieving this requires the provision of preliminaries, including the creation of authoritative scientific texts in the field of public …

Measuring The Impact Of Legal Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage Among Sexual Minority Women, Laurie A. Drabble, Amy A. Mericle, Angie R. Wootton, Cat Munroe, Libo Li, Karen F. Trocki, Tonda Hughes
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Reductions in structural stigma, such as gaining access to legalized same-sex marriage, is associated with positive psychological and physical health outcomes among sexual minority adults. However, these positive outcomes may be less robust among sexual minority women (SMW; e.g., lesbian, bisexual, queer) than sexual minority men and new measures are needed to develop a more nuanced understanding of the impact of affirming policies on the health and well-being of SMW. This study assessed the psychometric properties of measures developed to assess the psychosocial impacts of legalized same-sex marriage on the lives of SMW. Participants (N = 446) completed an online …

Material Encounters: Making Memory Beyond The Mind, Ariel Wills
Material Encounters: Making Memory Beyond The Mind, Ariel Wills
Masters Theses
Can acts of making carry the memories of our embeddedness within the world? This thesis explores how making things can nurture a sense of kinship that cuts across the organic and inorganic, erasing the distinction between living and dead, material and spiritual. Through handwork such as art-making, sewing, knitting, cooking, woodworking, and beyond, the burden of remembering and of archiving is shared across human and non-human bodies, cultivated through practices of making, and through the materials themselves. By recounting the stories of my family’s experience as Jewish immigrants in the United States, I aim to reveal how their domestic practices …

A Requiem For The Ussr: From Atheism To Secularity, Oksana Nesterenko
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This article examines performance and reception of music of sacred tradition in the Soviet Union in the 1970s-80s, with the focus on two works composed in the genre of Catholic Requiem Mass, Alfred Schnittke’s Requiem (1975) and Vyacheslav Artyomov’s Requiem (1988). The article recounts the history of Soviet atheism that, as a result of state’s failure to eradicate religion, evolved into a form of secular modernity, and outlines the music culture in which Schnittke and Artyomov lived. The official reception of the two requiems, which changed dramatically within twelve years, illustrates the state’s changing attitude to religion from atheist, where …

Assimilating To Art-Religion: Jewish Secularity And Edgar Zilsel’S Geniereligion (1918), Abigail Fine
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
In 1918, Edgar Zilsel—a Marxist-Jewish philosopher who was soon to be exiled from Vienna—published a sociological study that later readers have found prescient of fascism. In Die Geniereligion (“The Religion of Genius”), Zilsel cautioned against the hidden dangers of elevating secular figures to the status of deities. As early as 1912, Zilsel was disturbed by how art-religion shaped music culture: his earliest published essay ruminated on timelessness and canonicity, on striving for heavenly tones while cast down to the earthly squalor of the concert hall. Indeed, in Zilsel’s Vienna, art-religion had come to dominate the music world—biographers made Beethoven a …

Changes In Mental Illness Understanding And Treatment Throughout Time In The United States, Emma Cottrell
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
Healthcare professionals have been overlooking mental health for centuries resulting in inadequate care. This paper reviews the progression of mental health care from the 13th century to the present day in order to understand why we are seeing a gap in healthcare. Mental illness is a growing health condition in the United States with nearly one in every five adults experiencing some form of mental illness a year (Parekh, 2018). In order to understand what mental illness is and why it is so common despite the majority of cases being treatable, one must understand the social and historical progression and …

Interconnected food, energy, and water (FEW) nexus systems face many challenges to support human well-being (HWB) and maintain resilience, especially in arid and semiarid regions like New Mexico (NM), United States (US). Insufficient FEW resources, unstable economic growth due to fluctuations in prices of crude oil and natural gas, inequitable education and employment, and climate change are some of these challenges. Enhancing the resilience of such coupled socio-environmental systems depends on the efficient use of resources, improved understanding of the interlinkages across FEW system components, and adopting adaptable alternative management strategies. The goal of this study was to develop a …

Who Do You See?: Representing Diverse Communities Through Inclusive Children’S Book Collections, Alicia G. Vaandering, James Rosenzweig
Public Services Faculty Presentations
In the early 1990s, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop described books as windows that act either as sliding glass doors allowing readers to step into new worlds or as mirrors reflecting readers’ own perspectives and experiences. This presentation highlights the importance of offering both types of books to young readers and shares tools and resources that librarians can use to build more diverse collections capable of meeting the needs of the community. Determining how representative a collection is can be a daunting, time-intensive, and challenging task. This presentation endeavors to make that task more manageable by sharing the presenters’ experiences in …

Filling Gaps: Assessment Software And The Production Of Mathematics And Its Teaching And Learning In Primary Schools, J Alderton, N Pratt
Plymouth Institute of Education
Recent policy reforms to the national assessment system in England have altered the way in which teachers undertake assessment. Through an analysis of data from a small-scale interview study with eleven primary teachers in the south and east of England, we examine the ways in which teachers work with assessment software to monitor and track attainment. By employing a theoretical lens focusing on power and implementing an analytics of government, we illuminate the visualizing effects of whole class digital assessment grids. A prominent feature across the data set is the use of the language of ‘gaps’ in relation to the …

Understanding The Bounds Of Legitimacy: Weber’S Facets Of Legitimacy And The Police Empowerment Hypothesis, Kyle Mclean, Justin Nix
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Despite considerable evidence that police legitimacy results in beneficial outcomes like compliance, cooperation, and empowerment, scholars have yet to agree on how to define and operationalize legitimacy. Drawing on Max Weber’s facets of legitimacy, we developed and tested a measure of “traditional authority,” reflecting the possibility that some people legitimate the police more so based on tradition than normative concerns regarding fairness. Confirmatory factor analysis of survey data from a national sample of 701 US adults revealed that our traditional authority items loaded separately from items commonly used to capture feelings of trust, obligation to obey, and moral alignment. Furthermore, …

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) has previously been recognized as a major public health issue. Oral healthcare providers, such as dentists, are crucial to the screening and identifying of individuals experiencing IPV, since most injuries occur in the head and neck region. A lack of knowledge and awareness regarding teaching and learning about IPV in dental school curricula has been identified. Based upon the overall lack of knowledge, the objective of this study was to conduct a longitudinal assessment of knowledge, awareness, and beliefs regarding IPV among dental students in their first year of education. Methods: All students (n = …

Collective action is important when the activities and costs of restoration cannot all be internalized by the government or when urgent maintenance is required beyond the scope of the restoration project. Collective action can be influenced by social capital. In this study, we examine components of social capital and the factors that affect them. Using key informant interview, household survey, and participant observation, we also identify the extent to which social capital is related to collective action. We found that women farmer groups have high social capital, which has led to strong collective action. Social capital in Dompas’ women groups …

Sociocultural Factors Of Female Sexual Desire And Sexual Satisfaction, Matysen Evensen
Sociocultural Factors Of Female Sexual Desire And Sexual Satisfaction, Matysen Evensen
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Historically, research on the human sexual-response cycle has not accounted for individual differences in gender and context. As a circular female response cycle was introduced in the latter end of the 20th century, differentiation between male and female sexuality was embraced, and individual variation between women became commonly known for the first time. As part of this historical shift, sexual desire became an integral part of the sexual experience (Basson, 2000). Most research on female sexual desire focuses on low desire and diagnosable conditions, but, among researchers, there is a growing consensus for additional focus into the roots of female …

Contested Landscapes, Disputed Realities: An Investigation Of Socio-Environmental Conflict From Mining In Northern Ecuador: An Honors Thesis, Ian F. Hirons
Student Works
For decades, Ecuador has been one of the preeminent petrostates in South America. However, in response to recent drops in global demand and pricing for oil products, the country has made serious commitments to further develop its mineral resources. By opening a new natural resource sector, Ecuador has firmly cemented itself as a primarily extractivist nation. In the process, the national government has frequently come into conflict with activist and community groups who protest the encroachment of extractive industry. This thesis explores the various dimensions of socio-environmental conflict created by large-scale mining projects in northern Ecuador with specific attention to …
