Designing Life: A Socio-Cultural Analysis Of Ikea Kitchen Planner And Ux, Yunye Yu Jun 2021

Designing Life: A Socio-Cultural Analysis Of Ikea Kitchen Planner And Ux, Yunye Yu

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

The design process of a kitchen, like design tasks in other areas, requires specific domain knowledge and skills. However, kitchen design has its unique requirements and constraints due to the limited flexibility in appliance selection and work layout. While planning and designing a kitchen, users face complicated situations where they need to consider many technical factors such as the structure and floor plan of the house, lighting and heating system, interfering traffic in the kitchen, geographic locations of the house, temperature and humidity, and clean technology to name a few. The kitchen is also highly sensitive to local culture. For …

My Motherhood, My Way: A Sociological Study Of Contemporary Employed Mothers In Kolkata, Sanjukta Bhaumik, Sudhansubala Sahu Jun 2021

My Motherhood, My Way: A Sociological Study Of Contemporary Employed Mothers In Kolkata, Sanjukta Bhaumik, Sudhansubala Sahu

Journal of International Women's Studies

Motherhood in India has been understood primarily by placing mothers in the domestic space. A mother is constructed as a protector and the complete caregiver of her children. But there have been significant changes in the status of Indian women recently. In the 21st century, with suitable qualifications and employment opportunities, women have the choice to be economically independent and career-driven, which has a profound impact on their roles and responsibilities as protectors and caregivers in the home. It is essential to study and document how women in this generation have started to redefine their roles and negotiate what a …

Achieving Cultural Community Through Rhetorical Means: A Study Of Culture In The Bologna Process Documentation, Diane Martinez Jun 2021

Achieving Cultural Community Through Rhetorical Means: A Study Of Culture In The Bologna Process Documentation, Diane Martinez

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

An interesting point to consider when studying the Bologna Process, Europe’s contemporary initiative to reform the higher education systems among the 47 member countries, is how culture is represented in the official Process documentation. The official documentation contains layered definitions of culture that become problematic when determining the progress or the success or failure of this reform effort. For example, in the Sorbonne Joint Declaration (1998), the originating document of the Bologna Process, education ministers emphasized a large, overarching, definition of culture—a European culture—when they wrote that the Bologna Process is an opportunity “where national identities and common interests can …

Intercultural Connectivism: Introducing Personal Learning Networks, Ann Hill Duin, Joseph Moses Jun 2021

Intercultural Connectivism: Introducing Personal Learning Networks, Ann Hill Duin, Joseph Moses

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

Global connectivity makes intercultural communication an increasingly common experience. Providing students with insight and practice in intercultural communication is increasingly imperative. As Thatcher (2010) stated in the inaugural issue of this journal:

"We have a large task ahead of us: to develop and operationalize models of intercultural rhetoric and professional communication in the context of globalization (p. 14)... We need to especially pay attention to how new communication and information technologies require different etic frames for common human thresholds of interaction… How do we assess communicative purpose and media selection in global contexts? How do we plan for audience-author relations, …

Translocal Pragmatics: Operationalizing Postnational Heuristics To Locate Salient Cultural Overlap, Massimo Verzella, Andrew Mara

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

The importance of creating projects that allow students enrolled in American universities to collaborate with students enrolled in foreign institutions cannot be overemphasized. However, for these projects to be effective in terms of learning outcomes, it is important that instructors identify the factors that either prevent or prompt fruitful collaboration across cultural boundaries. The power of cultural boundaries demands that research on intercultural communication conceptualize and measure cultural difference. Additionally, research on intercultural communication has been irrevocably altered by the pace of communication technology change that allows for rapid and rich cross-cultural communication across great distances. An understanding of culture …

Conceptual Gender Analysis Of Gender Marked Phraseological Units And Proverbs In The Uzbek Language, Guli Ergasheva Jun 2021

Conceptual Gender Analysis Of Gender Marked Phraseological Units And Proverbs In The Uzbek Language, Guli Ergasheva

Philology Matters

Interdisciplinary approach is one of the important features of gender analysis as it can be studied in any field of science. The study of a language as an object of intercultural communication and the problems of the interdependence of a language, culture, and consciousness are of great importance in linguistics. The study deals with the general concept of phraseological units, which is reflected in the expression of the linguocultural means that arise in social events and serve for the specific national communicative process of society, both of which illuminate the national-cultural values of society the people. Indeed, a comparative analysis …

A Conceptual Framework Of Cultural Competence: A Case Study Of A Japanese Multinational In A Cross-National Context, Kanji Kitamura Jun 2021

A Conceptual Framework Of Cultural Competence: A Case Study Of A Japanese Multinational In A Cross-National Context, Kanji Kitamura

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article proposes a diagrammatic framework[1]to address the theoretical concept of cultural competence. Bridging prevalent concepts available in literature, it posits a simple yet versatile multi-level framework with two extremes to capture a spectrum of cultural specificities. Through a case study on a Japanese automobile conglomerate partly with European management, it concludes that cultural competence can be shown on a linear scale in the systematic framework. The findings advance the concept of cultural competence and the proposed model may be used as a foothold for future research possibly in any combination of cultures. This study is not to …

Analysis And Modeling Of Strategic Interactions In Health Systems To Improve Patient Care Access, Jorge A. Acuña Melo Jun 2021

Analysis And Modeling Of Strategic Interactions In Health Systems To Improve Patient Care Access, Jorge A. Acuña Melo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Affordable health care access that provides well-coordinated and high-quality services on time is a goal that governments and health organizations strive for. Regrettably, most countries deal with access problems that affect the population's health, such as long waiting lists for specialized medical services, overcrowding of emergency departments, and high health prices. In the present doctoral dissertation, I model and analyze the strategic interactions that inhabit the health system machinery to uncover possible structural problems that led to the aforementioned issues. The study involves operation research, data science, and game theory techniques to address the health care access predicament.

Each research …

Virtual Manhood Acts Within Social Networks: The Enactment Of Toxic Masculinity On Reddit, Christian D. Haase Jun 2021

Virtual Manhood Acts Within Social Networks: The Enactment Of Toxic Masculinity On Reddit, Christian D. Haase

Dissertations, 2020-current

Toxic masculinity (TM) has emerged as a label for the western hegemonic masculine ideal, which is generally defined by the pressure for boys and men to be aggressive and dominant, restrict emotional expression, and marginalize women and others that do not adhere to these values (Connell & Messerschmidt, 2005; Kupers, 2005). This phenomenon increases the risk for male identified individuals to engage in general acts of bigotry, especially gender-based violence (APA, 2018; Baugher & Gazmararian, 2015; FBI, 2007; Feder, Levant, & Dean, 2010). A contemporary touchpoint associated with proliferating TM ideologies is participation in online anonymous “toxic technoculture” social network …

Reflexive Thematic Analysis For Applied Qualitative Health Research, Karen A. Campbell, Elizabeth Orr, Pamela Durepos, Linda Nguyen, Lin Li, Carly Whitmore, Paige Gehrke, Leslie Graham, Susan M. Jack Jun 2021

Reflexive Thematic Analysis For Applied Qualitative Health Research, Karen A. Campbell, Elizabeth Orr, Pamela Durepos, Linda Nguyen, Lin Li, Carly Whitmore, Paige Gehrke, Leslie Graham, Susan M. Jack

The Qualitative Report

Thematic analysis is a widely cited method for analyzing qualitative data. As a team of graduate students, we sought to explore methods of data analysis that were grounded in qualitative philosophies and aligned with our orientation as applied health researchers. We identified reflexive thematic analysis, developed by Braun and Clarke, as an interpretive method firmly situated within a qualitative paradigm that would also have broad applicability within a range of qualitative health research designs. In this approach to analysis, the subjectivity of the researcher is recognized and viewed not as problematic but instead valued as integral to the analysis process. …

Effect Of Demographic And Health Dynamics On Cognitive Status In Mexico Between 2001 And 2015: Evidence From The Mexican Health And Aging Study, Silvia Mejia-Arango, Jaqualine Avila, Brian Downer, Marc A. Garcia, Alejandra Michaels-Obregon, Joseph L. Saenz, Rafael Samper-Ternent, Rebeca Wong Jun 2021

Saenz, Rafael Samper-Ternent, Rebeca Wong

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Sources of health disparities such as educational attainment, cardiovascular risk factors, and access to health care affect cognitive impairment among older adults. To examine the extent to which these counteracting changes affect cognitive aging over time among Mexican older adults, we examine how sociodemographic factors, cardiovascular diseases, and their treatment relate to changes in cognitive function of Mexican adults aged 60 and older between 2001 and 2015. Self and proxy respondents were classified as dementia, cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND), and normal cognition. We use logistic regression models to examine the trends in dementia and CIND for men and women …

La Variedad Local En La EnseñAnza Del EspañOl En Eeuu: Una Propuesta PedagóGica, Rebeca Acevedo

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

Metadiscourse In Book Reviews In English And Brazilian Portuguese: A Corpus-Based Analysis, Luciana Junqueiria, Viviana Cortes Jun 2021

Metadiscourse In Book Reviews In English And Brazilian Portuguese: A Corpus-Based Analysis, Luciana Junqueiria, Viviana Cortes

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

Book reviews play different roles in academia. They are used in the selection of what books to read and purchase (Carvalho, 2001) and as a vehicle for publication and visibility, especially for graduate students and novice scholars (Hyland, 2000; Motta-Roth, 2001). Scholars and graduate students must do a great amount of reading in order to stay up to date in any given field, as scientific knowledge has become more and more widespread. This task is undeniably challenging given the amount of time and resources needed for such updating (Carvalho, 2002; Suárez & Moreno, 2008). Academics need to be selective about …

Comparison As A Mode Of Inquiry: Rearticulating The Contexts Of Intercultural Communication, Lance Cummings Jun 2021

Comparison As A Mode Of Inquiry: Rearticulating The Contexts Of Intercultural Communication, Lance Cummings

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

Comparative inquiry has a long history in the scientific, sociological, and linguistic traditions that embody much of the work being done in English studies, including technical, professional, and intercultural communication. Generally speaking, comparative methods are often used to explain variation in human behavior, often with the assumption that there is a common source from which this variation springs, whether it be historical change, cognitive structures like universal grammar, social entities, or just “human nature.” As we move into what Wendy Hesford (2006) called the “global turn” in English studies, the phenomena of globalization and shifting classroom, cultural, and communicative ecologies …

Methodological Journey: Lessons Learned From A Student-Led Intercultural Pilot Study, Ryan James Price, Rebecca Walton, Matthew Petersen Jun 2021

Methodological Journey: Lessons Learned From A Student-Led Intercultural Pilot Study, Ryan James Price, Rebecca Walton, Matthew Petersen

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

New technical communication scholars face the challenge of developing cultural competence in order to effectively and appropriately carry out intercultural research. With interculturally competent technical communicators in increasingly high demand, instructors wrestle with the challenge of preparing students for cross-cultural work environments (Melton, 2011; Smith & Mikelonis, 2011; St.Amant, 2011). The field has adopted a wide variety of globalization-driven, culture-conscious educational practices over the past few decades, but a knowledge gap still persists regarding how to equip new scholars with training and tools that are necessary for building cultural competence, particularly as it relates to designing and conducting research. In …

Digital Ethnography For Intercultural Professional Communication: Some Best Practice Principles, Michael Madson Jun 2021

Digital Ethnography For Intercultural Professional Communication: Some Best Practice Principles, Michael Madson

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization

With global compressions of time and space, intercultural contact is heightening. Digital networks are converging. Perhaps more than ever before, professional communicators require cultural and technical savvy, allowing them to navigate, in a principled manner, digitally-mediated contexts (Spilka, 2010). Since no mediation is value neutral, digital technologies can spark intercultural friction (Thatcher, 2004; Warshauer, 2003, p. 6), blur ethical codes (Capurro, 2008; Himma, 2008), and perpetuate colonial relations (Ess & Sudweeks, 2012, p. xvi). How to operate in such complex, power-laden environments is a central concern in intercultural professional communication (IPC) and merits additional inquiry.

In Praise Of "Powerful, Head-Strong, Young People", Francesca Gamber

Early College Folio

This essay, a response to Elizabeth Blodgett Hall’s “The House of Education Needs Overhaul,” details the ways in which Bard High School Early College students in Baltimore challenge the systemic racism and economic disadvantages through community and critical thinking. The author describes the ways in which educators must support the courageous actions of these students to seek the resources, power, and a place in American education that they’ve historically been denied.

Minority Health Disparities In A 21st-Century Pandemic: A Comprehensive Report Of Project Research Focused On New York, Teresa Harrison, Theresa Pardo, Jordan Carleo-Evangelist, Lynn Warner

Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacted a starkly unequal toll on New Yorkers of color – both in terms of the virus itself and the accompanying social and economic impacts of the pandemic. These are not separate issues. They stem from the structural racism embedded in American society. While our work begins by establishing a statistical baseline for how the virus’s unequal toll played out in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York, any analysis of these disparities that looks solely at hospitalizations and deaths misses a tremendous piece of this tragic and preventable story. Minority health disparities …

Past human genetic diversity and migration between southern China and Southeast Asia have not been well characterized, in part due to poor preservation of ancient DNA in hot and humid regions. We sequenced 31 ancient genomes from southern China (Guangxi and Fujian), including two ∼12,000- to 10,000-year-old individuals representing the oldest humans sequenced from southern China. We discovered a deeply diverged East Asian ancestry in the Guangxi region that persisted until at least 6,000 years ago. We found that ∼9,000- to 6,000-year-old Guangxi populations were a mixture of local ancestry, southern ancestry previously sampled in Fujian, and deep Asian ancestry …
