New Yorkers are facing a housing crisis. Long-standing disparities of race and class in New York City have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Coronavirus and the looming eviction crisis threaten working-class communities, immigrant families and youth searching for housing stability throughout the city. This report is a call to action demanding that city and state elected officials, along with civic leaders, address the housing crisis that youth are inheriting. A team of youth housing fellows, housing organizers from the Broadway Housing Communities, and CUNY academics shaped this project around the ethos, “No research about us, without us.” The work …

Leading Through Educational Distress: An Autoethnography Of The Journey Of A School Administrator, Michelle M. Klug Jul 2021

Leading Through Educational Distress: An Autoethnography Of The Journey Of A School Administrator, Michelle M. Klug

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The purpose of this autoethnography is to provide analysis of personal leadership experiences during times of educational distress in order to extend understanding of the nuances of educational leadership for new and experienced leaders. An autoethnography is a qualitative research method in which the researcher is also the subject of the study. When looking at cultural groups or events, quantitative research methods do not translate to the meanings of humans in social interaction or speak to the significance of human thought and action (Adams, Holman Jones, & Ellis, 2015). In autoethnography, the researcher uses autobiographical stories to analyze and interpret …

Publications and Research

Introduction HIV transmission within serodifferent heterosexual couples plays a key role in sustaining the global HIV pandemic. In the USA, transmission within established mixed-status couples accounts for up to half of all new HIV infections among heterosexuals. Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention method, although underutilised among serodifferent couples. Moreover, there is a dearth of research on US HIV-serodifferent couples’ perspectives and use of PrEP, alone or in combination with other prevention methods. In this paper, we describe the study protocol for the Magnetic Couples Study, designed to fill critical knowledge gaps regarding HIV-serodifferent heterosexual couples’ …

A Relational Governance Perspective On The Politics Of China’S Social Credit System For Corporations, Alice De Jonge Jul 2021

A Relational Governance Perspective On The Politics Of China’S Social Credit System For Corporations, Alice De Jonge

UC Law SF International Law Review

This paper uses a comparative method to analyze China’s evolving Social Credit System (SCS) for corporations, and the political discourse used to portray SCS as a governance tool facilitating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with Chinese characteristics. A modified relational governance framework is used. The importance of relationships (guanxi) in the Chinese business context is that it makes a modified form of the relational governance perspective uniquely appropriate. This study also draws upon evolving literature examining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in international business contexts.

China’s corporate SCS is explicitly designed to evaluate corporate behavior through a “scoring” system of …

Inside The Black Box Of Prosecutor Discretion, Megan S. Wright, Shima Baughman, Christopher Robertson Jul 2021

Inside The Black Box Of Prosecutor Discretion, Megan S. Wright, Shima Baughman, Christopher Robertson

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

In their charging and bargaining decisions, prosecutors have unparalleled and nearly-unchecked discretion that leads to incarceration or freedom for millions of Americans each year. More than courts, legislators, or any other justice system player, in the aggregate prosecutors’ choices are the key drivers of outcomes, whether the rates of mass incarceration or the degree of racial disparities in justice. To date, there is precious little empirical research on how prosecutors exercise their breathtaking discretion. We do not know whether they consistently charge like cases alike or whether crime is in the eye of the beholder. We do not know what …

Technology Storylines: A Narrative Analysis Of The Rural Education Research, Eizabeth S. Wargo, Jeff Simmons Jul 2021

Technology Storylines: A Narrative Analysis Of The Rural Education Research, Eizabeth S. Wargo, Jeff Simmons

The Rural Educator

This piece offers a systematic review of rural (P-12) education technology literature. Drawing upon a social change frame (Ogburn, 1922), current rural education technology research within the subfield is collected, examined, and synthesized. Findings explicate that methodological diversity is a strength; however, some populations (e.g., middle school teachers) have thicker coverage than others (e.g., high school students). Additionally, many studies lean on rhetorical structures about what could and should be happening in rural schools, rarely delving into the how’s and whys associated with actual technology use in rural contexts. The piece concludes with a call for scholarship which assists in …

Early Humans And Changing Landscapes In The Knysna Region Of The Southern Cape, Naomi Cleghorn, Sara Wurz Jul 2021

Early Humans And Changing Landscapes In The Knysna Region Of The Southern Cape, Naomi Cleghorn, Sara Wurz

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Publications - Archive

Although little has been published on the deep-time archaeological record of Knysna area, recent research, early surveys, and local resident knowledge of sites and finds leave little doubt that people have made Knysna home for a very long time. From the hand-axe using human ancestors of more than 300 000 years ago (or more) Knysna has attracted people to the shores of its estuary, river, and coastline. A rich diversity of edible plants, animals, fresh water, and marine resources made it an ideal place for humans reliant on wild resources. Stone tools, the most enduring ‘visiting cards’ of the ancients, …

Roli I Përkrahjes Në Shëndetin Mental, Lirjeta Mahmuti

Theses and Dissertations

Does The Importance Of Environmental Issues Within An Industry Affect The Relationship Between Lean Operations And Corporate Financial Performance?, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes, Benjamin P. Foster Jul 2021

Does The Importance Of Environmental Issues Within An Industry Affect The Relationship Between Lean Operations And Corporate Financial Performance?, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes, Benjamin P. Foster

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lean operations and environmental sustainability have been generally accepted to be complementary activities, although prior studies have not found consistent relationships between these factors and corporate financial performance. It has been proposed that these inconsistent findings might be due to industry-specific differences in sustainability. Thus, this study examines: (i) whether the level of leanness in companies is related to the importance of environmental sustainability and (ii) if the relationship between companies’ leanness and their financial performance is heightened by the importance of environmental issues inherent in their industries. To measure the importance of environmental issues in an industry, we employ …

The Impact Of Cooperative Learning, Bethany Reinhard Jul 2021

The Impact Of Cooperative Learning, Bethany Reinhard

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Cooperative learning has been around for decades. It can be highly effective in increasing students' academic achievement, motivation, engagement, positive attitudes, social and emotional aspects, and much more if implemented correctly. It can be difficult for educators to jump right in on using a new teaching strategy. Years of research has provided us with different perspectives and input of cooperative learning's effects and implementation strategies. This literature review contains information from peer reviewed, scholarly journals researching the history of cooperative learning, multiple different grouping techniques, aftermaths in both academic and social effects, the teacher's role, and the importance of collaboration. …

Organizational Climate In Schools Across The Archdiocese Of Detroit, Ben Pogodzinski, Anne Morris Jul 2021

Organizational Climate In Schools Across The Archdiocese Of Detroit, Ben Pogodzinski, Anne Morris

Journal of Catholic Education

To help inform continuous improvement efforts across Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit (AOD), the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness Surveys were administered to parents, students, and faculty/staff across schools in the AOD during Winter 2018. This work sought to identify variation in responses across respondents and schools. Additionally, we sought to identify an association between the survey responses and enrollment trends across schools. Our findings show some significant differences in responses across the domains of the survey as well as across respondent group. The initial analysis found no statistically significant association between measures of organizational climate and enrollment trends, …

Below The Line: Misrepresented Sources In The Rosenhan Hoax, Stewart Justman Jul 2021

Below The Line: Misrepresented Sources In The Rosenhan Hoax, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

Though footnotes may seem like technicalities in the sciences, work in these disciplines is by no means independent of textual sources. How often are sources checked? In the unique case of D. L. Rosenhan’s celebrated—and as we now know, fabricated—study ‘On Being Sane in Insane Places’, a review of any of several listed sources (or even an ordinarily attentive reading of the text itself) would have suggested strongly that something was not right. Had readers examined Rosenhan’s sources with ordinary care, so many misrepresentations would have been uncovered that the credibility of the entire performance would have come into question. …

Latino Family Engagement In A Network Of Catholic Bilingual Schools, Gabrielle Oliveira, Eunhye Cho, Olivia Barbieri Jul 2021

Latino Family Engagement In A Network Of Catholic Bilingual Schools, Gabrielle Oliveira, Eunhye Cho, Olivia Barbieri

Journal of Catholic Education

In this article, we examine how a Network of Catholic Bilingual Schools (NCBS) serves Latino populations by examining the leadership’s narratives of the school services and outreach. By employing a survey with 16 principals in the NCBS, we argue that the rate of engagement is similar between Latino and non-Latino parents, although the nature of the activities varied. Despite the long-held belief that Latino parents are less likely to participate in schooling than non-Latino parents, we found that Latino parents committed their participation in schools across cultural, linguistic, or religious activities. We highlight how principals acknowledge and describe Latino families’ …

Experiences Of Dispute Resolution In Non-Court Forums: Justice Sans Rule Of Law?, Shruti Vidyasagar, Shruthi Naik Jul 2021

Experiences Of Dispute Resolution In Non-Court Forums: Justice Sans Rule Of Law?, Shruti Vidyasagar, Shruthi Naik

Socio-Legal Review

Dispute resolution in India involves several actors and institutions – not only courts but also various other forums for alternative means of dispute resolution. While the judiciary is the sole authority responsible for redressing rights’ violations, the problems plaguing the judicial system contribute significantly to parties opting to settle disputes out of court. In this paper, we examine the functioning of some non-court forums, with a special focus on the question of women’s rights, autonomy, and agency in dispute resolution processes. We ask whether the working of such non-court forums is in consonance with the values of the Indian Constitution, …

Special Report On Covid-19 Vaccination Trends Among Older Adults In Singapore, Micah Tan, Paulin T. Straughan, Wensi Lim, Grace Cheong Jul 2021

Special Report On Covid-19 Vaccination Trends Among Older Adults In Singapore, Micah Tan, Paulin T. Straughan, Wensi Lim, Grace Cheong

ROSA Research Briefs

This report examines trends in vaccination among older adults in Singapore to better understand why segments of older adults continue to resist vaccination against COVID-19. We find that individuals who were most likely to still be waiting to vaccinate or to not want to be vaccinated as of June 2021; are relatively older (aged 71-75), are of lower socioeconomic status (lower education levels and living in 1-3 room HDB flats), were the least likely to rely on Newspapers and Government Sources as sources of information for COVID-19 related news in November 2020, were least trusting of all sources of information, …

The Violence Of Postmodern “Gender Identity” Medicine, Heather Brunskell-Evans Jul 2021

The Violence Of Postmodern “Gender Identity” Medicine, Heather Brunskell-Evans

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The medical “transition” of children with “gender dysphoria” is increasingly normalized in North America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Although each country has specific national gender identity development services, the rationale for prescribing hormone treatment is broadly similar. A minority rights paradigm underpinned by postmodern theory has gained traction in the past 10 years and has been successful in influencing public policy, the education of pediatricians, endocrinologists, and mental health professionals. In this view, any response other than an affirmation of the child’s claim to be the opposite sex or “born in the wrong body” is …

Confidence Of Graduate Students In Engineering Masters’ Programs: A Comparison Of Returners And Direct-Pathway Students, Diane Peters, Elizabeth Gross Jul 2021

Confidence Of Graduate Students In Engineering Masters’ Programs: A Comparison Of Returners And Direct-Pathway Students, Diane Peters, Elizabeth Gross

Mechanical Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials

Confidence is a critical factor in the success of graduate students; those who are not confident of their ability to succeed will have greater difficulties in persisting and graduating with the degree that they seek. Therefore, cultivating confidence is an important part of equipping graduate students for success, and the question of where confidence comes from is an important one. In this study, 300 graduate students were surveyed, including both returners (students with a gap of at least five years between completing their undergraduate education and starting graduate study) and direct pathway students (students with a gap less than five …

Bodies, Blood, And Fluids As Resistance In Feminist Art, Laura Alice Page Jul 2021

Bodies, Blood, And Fluids As Resistance In Feminist Art, Laura Alice Page

Theses

This thesis looks at examples of women’s bodies and their fluids being used as both subject and media in performance art. These selected works of art are analyzed for how the inclusion of these images and issues creates resistance through visibility in a society that seeks to sanitize and commodify women’s bodies. This thesis will focus on women’s bodies as a medium in performance art. It will also describe menstrual blood as a medium and how this seeks to highlight and make visible and normal this important and natural bodily function. It also looks at the use of other bodily …

Pet Parenting In The United States: Investigating An Evolutionary Puzzle, Shelly Volsche Jul 2021

Pet Parenting In The United States: Investigating An Evolutionary Puzzle, Shelly Volsche

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fertility rates continue to decline globally amidst the second demographic transition, marked by urbanization, increased educational attainment, and most importantly, a new flexibility in life-course organization. As a result, some individuals are choosing to bring companion animals in the home rather than raising children. Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore whether these transitions result in differential companion animal attachment and caregiving behavior in the homes of parents (or those who desire to become parents) and nonparents or childfree “pet parents.” Methods A total of 917 respondents completed an online survey via Qualtrics that included demographic questions, the …

Maritime Asymmetric Warfare In Archipelagic States; The Indonesian Phenomena, Taufik Dwicahyono, Amarulla Octavian, Romie Oktavianus Bura, Gamantyo Hendrantoro, Pujo Widodo

Journal of Strategic and Global Studies

Defending sovereignty within an island nation is relatively more complex than doing so for a continental state. The number of scattered islands makes straits and seas more penetrable, vulnerable points and targets of asymmetric threats at sea. The aim of this research is to illustrate threats at sea and provide solutions in guarding and monitoring Indonesian coastal borders, which currently require more ships and radar technology as well as other sensing equipment due to longer beaches. The results reveal that firstly, potential asymmetrical threats at sea include former WWII mines, underwater fibre cables, and nuclear submarines belonging to foreign countries …
