Estimation On Kumaraswamy-Inverse Weibull Distribution With Constant Stress Partially Accelerated Life Tests, Nagwa M. Mohamed Jul 2021

Estimation On Kumaraswamy-Inverse Weibull Distribution With Constant Stress Partially Accelerated Life Tests, Nagwa M. Mohamed

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents a method of estimation parameters and acceleration factor of Kumaraswamy-Inverse Weibull Distribution based on constant stress partially accelerated life tests. Depending on progrssive type-II censoring, we present the maximum likelihood, Bayes, and two parametric bootstrap methods. In addition, we use the asymptotic variance covariance matrix of the estimators to construct the approximate confidence intervals, bootstrap and credible confidence intervals. Furthermore, we apply Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to compute the Bayes estimators. Also, generating Markov Chain Monte Carlo samples from the posterior density functions using Gibbs within the Metropolis-Hasting algorithm is studied. Finally, a numerical example is …

In Pursuit Of Comparability: Evaluating Influence And Interaction Among Components Of The Home Range Estimation Process In Chimpanzee Datasets, Jillian J. Rutherford Jul 2021

In Pursuit Of Comparability: Evaluating Influence And Interaction Among Components Of The Home Range Estimation Process In Chimpanzee Datasets, Jillian J. Rutherford

Geography ETDs

The home range (HR) is a fundamental manifestation of an animal’s spatial behavior, but its study has been limited by unclear, unreliable, and unstandardized methodological approaches for measurement. The lack of a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of components of the HR estimation process has hampered consensus over best practices for collecting and analysing movement data. This leads to wide variation in practice, thwarting direct comparability between HR estimates and curtailing the cohesive power of cross-study findings necessary for testing hypotheses and developing appropriate conservation and management strategies. In this thesis I explore the influence of and interaction between common …

The Preservice Teacher Self-Efficacy For Writing Inventory (Ptswi): A Tool For Measuring Beliefs About Writing, Tracey S. Hodges, Katherine Landau Wright, Erin M. Mctigue Jul 2021

The Preservice Teacher Self-Efficacy For Writing Inventory (Ptswi): A Tool For Measuring Beliefs About Writing, Tracey S. Hodges, Katherine Landau Wright, Erin M. Mctigue

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Teachers are often underprepared to teach writing, which can negatively impact the performance and attitudes of their students. In teacher preparation programs, one goal should be to specifically develop future teachers of writing. Focusing on self-efficacy beliefs, increasing preservice teachers’ confidence and preparedness for teaching writing could yield positive impacts on classroom writing instructional practices. Currently, tools to quantitatively measure self-efficacy for writing and writing instruction in preservice teachers are sparse, thus limiting teacher educators’ ability to understand the efficacy of writing instruction. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to gather evidence of score validity and reliability of …

Investigating Residents’ Attitudes Towards Tourism Growth In Downtown Greenville, Sc: The Effect Of Demographic Variables, Yuting An, Jang-Won Moon, William C. Norman

Open Access Publishing Fund

Given the high density of urban spaces, residents and tourists share resources and infrastructure in limited spaces. The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of residents’ perceived tourism impacts on their attitudes towards tourism growth, the effect of proximity to tourism center on residents’ attitudes, and how this effect is moderated by residents’ demographic features (age, gender, length of residence) in urban settings. A total of 251 responses were collected in downtown Greenville, a tourist zone located in the heart of Greenville, SC, USA. Using multiple regression models and ANOVA, the study suggested that (1) economic impact …

Community Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Crime And Victimization: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understanding Collective Efficacy And Social Cohesion In The Rural Heartland, Ashley Lockwood, April Terry Ph.D. Jul 2021

Community Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Crime And Victimization: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understanding Collective Efficacy And Social Cohesion In The Rural Heartland, Ashley Lockwood, April Terry Ph.D.

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Previous criminological literature has mostly neglected rural communities, often treating these places as smaller pieces of urban culture. Literature suggests rural communities operate differently than urban neighborhoods, with distinctive values, norms, and community cohesion. For example, concepts surrounding collective efficacy may work counterproductively in rural areas—further exploiting outed community members within “close-knit” environments. The current study sought to compare perceptions of collective efficacy and social cohesion, crime, and victimization between rural and urban counties across one Midwestern rural state. Using a mixed-methods approach, community stakeholders from a variety of professions were surveyed. Quantitative results suggest similar perceptions of collective efficacy …

The Remains Of The Fray: Nascent Colonialism And Heterogeneous Hybridity, Charles R. Cobb, James B. Legg, Steven D. Smith, Chester B. Depratter, Brad R. Lieb, Edmond A. Boudreaux Jul 2021

Investigations at the Native American site complex of Stark Farms in Mississippi, USA, have yielded numerous examples of metal artifacts of European origin. Our study suggests that they derive from contact between the AD 1540-1541 winter encampment of the Spanish Hernando de Soto expedition and the local Indigenous polity. The artifacts display a wide range of modifications, uses, and depositional contexts congruent with hybrid practices. We argue that the early colonial setting of Stark Farms requires a different perspective on cultural mixing than is often applied in studies of European colonialism. This is highlighted by the strongly improvisational nature of …

The authors explain how we know civic education is lacking due to our country’s civic anemic health and low democratic participation. The author shares what solutions lead to effective civic education as well as what barriers stand in the way. The author concludes by making policy recommendations with an emphasis on national standardization, assessment, resource support, and experiential community-based learning.

Our Issue Or Their Issue? Media Coverage And Framing Of The Zika Virus Epidemic, Thomas Jamieson, Juve J. Cortés Rivera Jul 2021

Our Issue Or Their Issue? Media Coverage And Framing Of The Zika Virus Epidemic, Thomas Jamieson, Juve J. Cortés Rivera

Public Administration Faculty Publications

How does news media respond to health emergencies abroad? From 2015 to 2018, Zika virus disease spread rapidly throughout Latin America before arriving in the continental US. Despite risks to adults and newborns, it is unclear how media coverage responded and framed the risk for its audience. In this article, we argue that while frequency of coverage was responsive to infections, its content failed to promote proactive health behavior. To assess these claims, we analyze each article (442) dealing with Zika virus published between 2015-2018 by the New York Times. We find that the amount of coverage reflected infections but …

Barriers, Racism, Discrimination, And Stereotypes Against An Adult Immigrant Pursuing Adult Education: A Case Study, Kendra Mccracken

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Barriers, racism, discrimination, and stereotypes are experienced by immigrants every day. These problems are especially important when immigrants are seeking education. Education is critical for immigrants because it allows for integration, which is vital to an immigrant’s life in the United States. The study asked a participant, who had come to the United States for a degree, for a description of their experiences in the United States. The study confirmed that barriers, racism, discrimination, and stereotypes are experienced by immigrants when pursuing education in the United States. Taking a pedagogy approach may improve learning outcomes in immigrants. Education on racism, …

The Effect Of Pedagogical Agent Persona On Performance, Self-Efficacy, And Attitudes In Adult Learners In An Online Environment, Justin L. Mathews

Dissertations

Pedagogical agents, virtual avatars that are often included in online training or educational modules, have been studied in a variety of disciplines to determine the extent to which their inclusion in online or multimedia learning environments may influence both cognitive and affective outcomes in learners. The present study examined the effect of a peer-like pedagogical agent providing motivational messaging in an online English language learning environment to determine if the agent will positively affect college students’ performance, self-efficacy, and attitude in comparison to a control group. All participants studied an online, self-paced English grammar module, either with (treatment version) or …
