Anti-Muslim Bias: Investigating Individual Differences, Threat Perceptions, And Emotions In Islamophobic Policy Support, Aeleah M. Granger
Anti-Muslim Bias: Investigating Individual Differences, Threat Perceptions, And Emotions In Islamophobic Policy Support, Aeleah M. Granger
Dissertations and Theses
Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Muslims in the United States were victims of increased surveillance by law enforcement on the basis of their religious identity, often resulting in mistreatment and unjustified imprisonment. These biases against Muslims and subsequent policy shifts have been pervasive and have had negative impacts on the growing number of Muslims in the United States. The current study focuses on individual differences that predict Islamophobia, including Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), Right-wing Authoritarianism (RWA), and Nationalism, as well as the specific types of intergroup threat perceptions (i.e., realistic, symbolic, terroristic) and subsequent emotional reactions (e.g., anger, fear) …

Re/ Constructing Race And Racism Among Unionized Mexican Immigrants Through Vernacular Discourse, Jocelyn Gomez
Re/ Constructing Race And Racism Among Unionized Mexican Immigrants Through Vernacular Discourse, Jocelyn Gomez
Communication ETDs
This study explores the vernacular discourse of unionized Mexican immigrants living and working in Orange County in California. Given the current political climate and the historical roots of the construction of "race" in the United States, I explore how the current sociopolitical conditions of organized Latina/o affect their understanding of race and their experiences with racism. It is also important to address the everyday racism the Latina/o community faces that continue to marginalize them. This study focuses on the vernacular discourses on race and racism of organized working-class Latinas/os who are members of labor unions. Through intentional conversations about racial …
Division Of Household Labor And The Psychological Wellbeing Of Women In The Middle East And North America, Rawda Tomoum
Division Of Household Labor And The Psychological Wellbeing Of Women In The Middle East And North America, Rawda Tomoum
Psychology and Counseling Theses
The purpose of this study was to compare the division of household labor (HL) across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and North America. I also examined the impact of gendered division of HL on stress, depression, and anxiety levels. As predicted, division of HL was more gendered in the Middle East than in North America. Also, as predicted, gendered division of household labor was associated with higher levels of psychological distress among women. Looking across regions, there was a moderate association between HL and psychological distress among Middle Eastern women. HL and childcare combined were strongly associated …
Neighborhood Safety Concerns And Daily Well-Being: A National Diary Study, Jennifer W. Robinette, Jennifer R. Piazza, Robert S. Stawski
Neighborhood Safety Concerns And Daily Well-Being: A National Diary Study, Jennifer W. Robinette, Jennifer R. Piazza, Robert S. Stawski
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
People living in unsafe neighborhoods often report poor health. The reasons for this are multi-faceted, but one possibility is that unsafe neighborhoods create a situation of chronic stress, which may deplete people's resources to cope with the daily stressors of life. How people respond to daily stressors (e.g., with increased self-reported negative affect and physical symptoms) is positively associated with health problems and may thus be one pathway linking perceptions of neighborhood safety to poor health. The current study investigated the relationship between neighborhood safety concerns, daily stressors, affective well-being, and physical health symptoms in a national sample of adults …

Research Beyond The Ivory Tower: A Book Review Of Researching With: A Decolonizing Approach To Community-Based Action Research, Wesley D. Cohoon
The Qualitative Report
This is a book review of Researching With: A Decolonizing Approach to Community-Based Action Research by Jessica Smartt Gullion and Abigail Tilton. The authors are both university professors and Deans who respectively specialize in Sociology and Social Work. The book uses qualitative research as it seeks to merge academia with the professional world. Researching With teaches academics to come alongside their study participants and apply research in professional contexts. I offered a critical analysis of Researching With by identifying themes and concepts that will benefit both expert and beginner researchers. The book will help readers frame research questions and understand …
Conducting Field Work With Microfinance Programs’ Participants In A Non-Western Setting: A Reflexive Account, Mohammad Shahjahan Chowdhury
Conducting Field Work With Microfinance Programs’ Participants In A Non-Western Setting: A Reflexive Account, Mohammad Shahjahan Chowdhury
The Qualitative Report
While volumes of procedural guidelines are available on how to conduct fieldwork, in practice a researcher encounters various challenges and dilemmas in the field. This paper presents a holistic view of the puzzles this researcher encountered in gaining access, negotiating positionality, application of the pre-determined methodology, and ensuring ethics during his fieldwork with microfinance program participants in a non-Western setting. This paper contributes to the fieldwork literature by enhancing a researcher’s understanding of the unanticipated challenges.
A Crack In The Looking-Glass Self: Hearing And Socialization, Grace Keyes
A Crack In The Looking-Glass Self: Hearing And Socialization, Grace Keyes
The Qualitative Report
A significant problem of classic theories of socialization, such as Cooley’s looking-glass self, is that such theories fail to consider biological factors such as hearing in the process of socialization. To address this problem, I raised a two-pronged question: how does deafness affect social interactions upon which much of socialization is dependent and can the experiences of one person’s lifelong socialization help uncover limitations of a classic theory of socialization? The key study participant in this instrumental case study is an individual with moderately severe hearing loss and whose lifelong experiences were collected primarily through ethnographic field techniques. Findings from …

“The Lunchroom Is Dirty And The Food Is Nasty”: Ethical Dilemmas In Conducting Qualitative Food Studies Research In Detroit And New York City Public Schools, Sophia Rodriguez, John Lupinacci, Kristen Goessling
The Qualitative Report
In this article, reflecting critically on past school food studies and considering the landscape of qualitative methods, notably youth participatory action research methodologies, the authors share methodological suggestions for centering social justice and sustainability with the lived experience of youth by drawing on their critical qualitative research in Detroit and New York City public schools. We advance an analytic framework that aims to center youth voices and solutions to social problems such as food justice and equity. To this end we call for attention to human rights, youth participatory research, and relational ethics as part of our intention to center …
Indigenous Feminist Legal Pedagogies, Emily Snyder
Indigenous Feminist Legal Pedagogies, Emily Snyder
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
What does “Indigenous feminist legal pedagogy” mean? This article takes up this inquiry through an analysis of interviews that were done with twenty-three professors who teach in the area of Indigenous law (Indigenous peoples’ own laws) in Canada. Overwhelmingly, the professors were on board with the idea that gender matters and that it needs to be included in education about Indigenous laws, but how people were taking up gender, and the responses as they relate to Indigenous feminisms, varied. The interviews signal that there is a need for ongoing work in the area of gender and feminisms in the field …

Assessing Latinx Colorism And Skin Tone Dating Preferences In Adults, Yessica M. Berumen Martinez
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Colorism is favoring by individuals of lighter skin over darker skin. This differs from racism because racism is discrimination directed towards racial or ethnic minorities, while colorism typically refers to within-group prejudice. The purpose of this study is to find out whether and how Latinx individuals’ self-perceived skin color, family, and friends influence their dating skin color preference. 145 respondents ages 18 and over completed the In-group Colorism Scale by Harvey, Banks, and Tennial (2017) and answered additional questions on skin tone perceptions on dating, and parent and friend influences. There was no significant connection between self-perceived skin color and …

Gendering The Public Sector: Women’S Status In Local Administrations. A Case Study From Spain, Eva Bermúdez-Figueroa
Gendering The Public Sector: Women’S Status In Local Administrations. A Case Study From Spain, Eva Bermúdez-Figueroa
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women’s role in political representation has been deeply studied in the administration and political literature, but scarcely researched from an employment point of view. Furthermore, there is a lack of attention to public employment in administrations, specifically municipalities, which are the closest public level to the citizenry. We claim women's employment in public administration presents similar characteristics to private employment—occupational segregation, wage gap, glass ceiling—despite being a traditional niche of protected employment for women in Europe and globally. This fact is contrary to what might be expected, from a guarantor of equality in the public sector.

Women And Local Government Elections In Turkey: Analysis Of Supply And Demand-Side Framework, Abdul -Malik Abdulai, Ayten Ceter, Israel Nyaburi Nyadera
Journal of International Women's Studies
How do women perform in Turkish local government elections? Existing studies have delved on the subject of participation and representation of women in political activities and the main concern has been to assess the factors responsible for the underrepresentation of women in politics. However, previous studies have largely focused on the representation of women in national legislative assemblies seemingly to assert that political representation of women is confined to national politics and their representation in local governments is largely overlooked. This paper seeks to fill the lacuna in the literature by focusing on participation and representation of women in local …
Impact Of The Turkish Labor Market On Physical Activities And Sports, Ersöz Gözde, Meltem İnce-Yenilmez
Impact Of The Turkish Labor Market On Physical Activities And Sports, Ersöz Gözde, Meltem İnce-Yenilmez
Journal of International Women's Studies
The sports industry is growing fast on a global scale and is inclusive of both the manufacturing and service sectors because of its versatility and diversified workforce. In Turkey the growth rate in college graduates with degrees aligned to the industry is significant. However, despite the representation of women in the industry as athletes and teachers, within sports management women remain significantly underrepresented. This discussion highlights the cultural norms that contribute to gender representation and forecasts the gender equity benefits that would accrue to greater female representation in the sports industry.
The Myth Of Mental Disorder: Transsubstantive Behavior And Taxometric Psychiatry, Steven K. Erickson
The Myth Of Mental Disorder: Transsubstantive Behavior And Taxometric Psychiatry, Steven K. Erickson
Akron Law Review
This article argues that three factors are primarily responsible for this current state of affairs: (1) the proliferation of mental disorders in the nosology of psychiatry; (2) the departure from traditional notions of illness in psychiatry towards a vague definition of "mental disorders"; (3) the inclusion of "personality disorders" and other phenomenon as diagnosable mental disorders that, at first blush, appear arbitrarily construed and sit in place of what is (or once was) considered poor moral character. When psychiatry turned away from the term "mental illness" to the expansive "mental disorder," it opened a Pandora's Box whereby almost any behavior …
Changes In Governance: A Cross-Disciplinary Review Of Current Scholarship, Scott Burris, Michael Kempa, Clifford Shearing
Changes In Governance: A Cross-Disciplinary Review Of Current Scholarship, Scott Burris, Michael Kempa, Clifford Shearing
Akron Law Review
The aim of this paper is to explore for a broader legal audience what researchers and theorists in a wide range of fields have made of the ferment in governance, and to identify important lessons for people interested in how to improve it locally, nationally, and internationally. We seek to link what lawyers are writing to a rich literature on governance theory and practice in other fields. Specifically, we address two main problems. The Description Problem poses the question of what is the most accurate, as opposed to the formal, description of where governance is located and how it is …
Memory, Imagination, Identity: Pilgrimage And Portraiture In Medieval And Early Modern Europe, Helena Guzik
Memory, Imagination, Identity: Pilgrimage And Portraiture In Medieval And Early Modern Europe, Helena Guzik
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Despite the wealth of material and textual evidence attesting to the practice of Christian pilgrimage throughout history, comprehending an individual’s understanding of pilgrimage in relation to his or her own identity has always proved challenging. Pilgrimage studies scholars have tended to look to travel accounts, chronicles, and collected pilgrim souvenirs to discern how pilgrims were affected by and responded to their experiences. One form of source material that has gone largely underexamined in this regard is the genre of portraiture. This article explores how and why the concept of pilgrimage could be incorporated into the self-fashioned images of patrons in …

(Re)Creating A Pilgrimage: A Century Of Pilgrimage Reports From Jesuit Novices In Canada (1864-1968), Rev. André Brouillette
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In 1864, a new type of pilgrimage was implemented in Canada: the Jesuit novitiate pilgrimage. Since the creation of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540, a month-long pilgrimage is one experience required of new members. This formative moment has been enshrined in the Constitutions of the order. The experience is also reminiscent of the journey of the founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), who went to Jerusalem as a young man desirous to imitate Christ, and later applied the moniker ‘the pilgrim’ to himself in an account of his life confided in Luis Gonçalves da Câmara (1555). Pilgrimage was …
The Promise And Peril Of Walking Indigenous Territorial Recognitions Carried Out By Settlers, Ken Wilson, Matthew R. Anderson
The Promise And Peril Of Walking Indigenous Territorial Recognitions Carried Out By Settlers, Ken Wilson, Matthew R. Anderson
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This article proposes that if the permission and guidance of local Indigenous groups is obtained, and their protocols observed, a collaborative physical act of settler, or Indigenous-settler walking across territory on which events are to be held may constitute a more constructive form of ‘territorial acknowledgement’ than a verbal statement read out at such an event. By drawing sustained attention not only to Indigenous land but also to Indigenous title, resources, and jurisdiction, and by pointedly underlining the actual land in question, walking territorial acknowledgements can help settlers to develop an embodied sense of place-in-relation. In so doing they can …
Pilgrimage To And With The Black Nazarene: The Aesthetics Of Devotion In Quiapo, The Philippines, Celia Bonilla
Pilgrimage To And With The Black Nazarene: The Aesthetics Of Devotion In Quiapo, The Philippines, Celia Bonilla
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Objects of faith in various parts of the world draw visitors of all denominations, for different reasons. This paper studies the polysemic behaviour of people going to Quiapo Church in Manila, the Philippines. In particular, it focuses on the mammoth processions participated in by tens of thousands in a show of devotional fervour. In the conclusion, I tease out and summarise this aesthetic experience of devotion capturing the embodied values as annotated by the pilgrims. The three embodied values are a sense of personal miracle, a need to reciprocate, and a sense of community with and through this wooden image …

Religious Leadership: Agents Of Social Change, Jacqueline Carter
Religious Leadership: Agents Of Social Change, Jacqueline Carter
Dissertations
Historically, churches in the United States acquired respect as institutions that cultivated spiritual maturity and advocated for social equality in Black communities. Religious leaders represent the voice of reason for communities facing complex social problems, then and today. How educational attainment influences religious leaders’ social action strategies and decisions to engage or disengage in social activism is under explored. Additionally, it is unclear what strategies religious leaders use for social advocacy in their communities. Using andragogy and social cognitive theory as theoretical frameworks, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the educational experiences of religious leaders to understand …
Examining Young Children's Information Practices And Experiences: A Child-Centered Methodological Approach, Sarah C. Barriage
Examining Young Children's Information Practices And Experiences: A Child-Centered Methodological Approach, Sarah C. Barriage
Information Science Faculty Publications
Researchers interested in children and youth's engagement with information have developed participatory, multi-method approaches of collecting and analyzing data directly with children and youth. However, examples of this approach in studies specifically focused on young children in library and information science are scarce. This article describes the methodological approach used in a study of 5- to 7-year-old children's information practices and experiences related to their individual interests. Drawing on conceptual frameworks from both library and information science and childhood studies, this study used multiple methods of data collection in understanding young children's own perspectives of their information activities. Namely, data …

Conducting A Systematic Social Observation Of Body-Camera Footage: Methodological And Practical Insights, Vijay Chillar, Eric Piza, Victoria Sytsma
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"Increased use of video recording technologies such as drones, smartphones, CCTV, and body-worn cameras (BWCs), provides researchers with modes for observing human behavior in their natural settings. Although not originally intended for empirical inquiry, these data sources facilitate a video data analysis (VDA) framework used in the social sciences. BWCs represent an emerging technology within this framework, and BWC footage provides valuable insight into situational dynamics at play during various social phenomena. When combined with systematic social observation (SSO), researchers are well-equipped to unpack social phenomena in a manner that overcomes many challenges of traditional qualitative methodologies. This article incorporates …
Fugitive Gestures: The Persistence Of Black Meaning And Black Life In An Anti-Black World, Jasmine Terri Wallace
Fugitive Gestures: The Persistence Of Black Meaning And Black Life In An Anti-Black World, Jasmine Terri Wallace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
My dissertation, Fugitive Gestures: The persistence of Black meaning and Black life in an anti-Black world, develops a phenomenological analysis of contemporary Black lived experience in the US occuring in fugitive spaces--territories independent of white supremacy and anti-Black disciplinary techniques. In contrast to Afropessimists who argue that contemporary Black subjects exists as nonbeing, I demonstrate the presence of contemporary Black meaning and Black being as expressed in Black gestures. First, I develop the concept 'Black archive' to describe how contemporary subjects live with the conceptual awareness of historical anti-Blackness as it unfolds in the present; are symbolically marked by 'hieroglyphics …
