A Study Of Incarcerated Youth: The Effect Of Student Interest On Reading Comprehension And Engagement, Joanna C. Weaver, Grace E. Mutti

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Motivating adolescents to read can be a challenge, but motivating incarcerated adolescents to read may be even more of a challenge. Developing readers in residential facilities are often overlooked by traditional classroom teachers, but much can be learned from incarcerated youth and their motivation and engagement. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of research on effective instructional reading practices that motivate and engage incarcerated youth. The existing research primarily examines the impact of literacy on recidivism instead of strategies for motivating and engaging students who are incarcerated. Numerous studies exist that focus on motivation and engagement of reading in traditional classrooms, …

Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte Oct 2021

Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Through research and personal experience I found that there is a disparity for girls and women throughout the world when it comes to a natural occurrence for females, called menstruation. For the sake of brevity, I will use the general term “girls” though I mean to include women, also. In many countries girls don’t understand this monthly feminine process and don’t have the proper equipment to use. In many countries girls are taught wives’ tales on why women menstruate. Because of this they perpetuate the falsehoods to their girls and this leads to insecurities and shame. They also do not …

In order to collect donations I reached out to the community and received so much support that we were able to provide help to two other non-profit organizations the City of Lights, and Dress for Success. I was able to help organize my community to come together and provide a service to the more vulnerable in our community.

Making Connections: Marketing Ideas For Interpreters, Steve Mcdermott Oct 2021

Making Connections: Marketing Ideas For Interpreters, Steve Mcdermott

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

There is a need for skilled interpreters to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse communities. Many get into the field of interpretation and translation in order to assist those with language barriers, as well as earn a living for themselves. The interpreters get into the field not realizing that to succeed they also need an entrepreneurial spirit. These entrepreneurial linguists are classified as independent contractors, as such they are responsible for the business aspects of their livelihood. This includes marketing themselves in order to grow their client base. Marketing can be a daunting task in itself. In speaking with …

Action Capstone: United Standby Travel Handbook, Danaya S. Kinikini

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This project sought to answer the question, how might I create a travel handbook for airline employees to better utilize their travel privileges and improve morale? The handbook was broken down into three parts: resource how-to guide, standby travel handbook, and Facebook group. The airline industry saw an unprecedented busy summer travel season following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. Senior employees were finding themselves burnt out and new employees were overwhelmed with the workload due to short staffing levels. Many new employees were leaving for better compensated jobs. Stakeholders identified were United, management, and employees. If employees can utilize their travel …

Reversing The Aging Of The Skilled Trades Workers, Adam C. King Oct 2021

Reversing The Aging Of The Skilled Trades Workers, Adam C. King

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

For the past several decades there has been a prevalence of promoting the need for everyone to obtain at least a bachelor's degree to be able to have a successful career. This had led to a lack of interest of the younger generations in entering the skilled trades as a career. The result of this is that the average age of workers in the trades keeps increasing and as the boomer generation has retired there are not enough capable replacements entering the workforce. Having enough workers in the skilled trades is imperative to keeping the country moving forward by building …

Junky To Healthy, Ashley V. Stegall Oct 2021

Junky To Healthy, Ashley V. Stegall

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Eating healthy is not always easy. In fact it can be quite challenging especially if you think you are alone. A support group is a great way to feel like you are not alone. This is not your average support group. Since I am a little rough around the edges, you could say the support group is too. It does have structure because I want it to succeed but people can yell, scream, cuss and throw squishy balls at the wall.

Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming Oct 2021

Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming

Selected Honors Theses

Due to a lack of research on the topic and events of 2020, this thesis aims to learn how professors teach multicultural literature to traditional undergraduate students and how students respond to these courses. I focus on pedagogical scholarship that notes the structure, challenges, and impact of teaching this genre in K-12 and higher education classrooms. My conclusions provide educators with a repertoire of teaching strategies, materials, and student feedback to help students critically respond to living in a multicultural nation and world. These conclusions also lessen a gap in research, as there is significantly less published information on teaching …

Framing Strikes: A Case Study Of Media Depictions Of Two Teacher Strikes, Jamie Gillespie Oct 2021

Framing Strikes: A Case Study Of Media Depictions Of Two Teacher Strikes, Jamie Gillespie

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

In this study, I examined the media framing of teachers strikes in Chicago in 2012 and in Seattle in 2015 by analyzing depictions of the people, issues, and events involved in the months before, during, and after the strikes in local media outlets. My findings indicate that the overwhelmingly negative coverage of teachers and their union in Chicago may have impacted the less successful negotiations outcomes, while the mostly positive coverage of teachers and their union in Seattle may have played a role in the more successful negotiated agreement between teachers and the school district.

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

Our work utilized a multi-disciplinary approach to assess the digital divide among K-12 students through socio-technical and economic analysis. Results show that access to high-speed internet (broadband) and use continued to be a challenge for children and schools located in disadvantaged communities. Three visualizations were developed to display the digital disparity at the county level across our country and to support decision-making in resource allocation to improve broadband access and utilization.

Mindset Predicting Mindfulness: Developing Professional Capacity, Jess L. Gregory Oct 2021

Mindset Predicting Mindfulness: Developing Professional Capacity, Jess L. Gregory

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

This paper examines the quantitative relationships between mindset and mindfulness in educators and considers how these data might inform strategies used in professional development. Until very recently, mindset and mindfulness were studied only independently of each other even though the theory authors, Dweck and Langer, inhabited similar geographic and temporal spaces. This study, based on 110 educator, self-reported, responses collected over six years, found a statistically significant relationship between a more incremental mindset and higher scores on the Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire. Mindfulness was found to predict mindset more strongly than mindset predicts mindfulness.

Language Minority Students Identified For Special Education: Predictors And The Role Of Parent Engagement, Angela Klinger Oct 2021

Language Minority Students Identified For Special Education: Predictors And The Role Of Parent Engagement, Angela Klinger

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

This study investigated predictors of special education identification among language minority (LM) students by fifth grade using data from the ECLS-K:2011. Predictors included fifth-grade reading performance, student mobility, and school percentage of students receiving free and reduced-price meals. Behavior was a stronger predictor of special education identification for non-LM students than for LM students in second and third grades. Leading predictors of special education identification among LM students indicated that efforts should be focused on early reading intervention, equitable screening in low-income school communities, culturally relevant behavioral assessments, and increased monitoring of LM students who change schools.

Is Servant Leadership Just For Western Cultures? Complexities, Gaps, And Challenges, Samuel Chaise Oct 2021

Is Servant Leadership Just For Western Cultures? Complexities, Gaps, And Challenges, Samuel Chaise

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

Servant leadership was originally proposed as an ethical way of leading and has become a near-synonym for Christian leadership. This is problematic, however, because cultures with differing “power distance” vary regarding their view of the ethical use of power in leadership. Further, most of the research and writing on servant leadership has been conducted in Western, professionalized cultures. This article proposes that the way servant leadership is currently being conceptualized is not applicable to all cultural settings, which may mean that there are other “Christian” ways to lead.
