Expression Of The Oppressed: Using Critical Pedagogy In Arts Education To Disrupt Systems Of Oppression, S. Rebeqa Rivers
Expression Of The Oppressed: Using Critical Pedagogy In Arts Education To Disrupt Systems Of Oppression, S. Rebeqa Rivers
Visions of Research in Music Education
In 1970, Freire introduced critical pedagogy in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Since that time, critical pedagogy has been widely applied in general education and has slowly integrated into music, theater, dance, and visual arts education. Rooted in the critical examination of power, critical pedagogy is a way of critically examining how we conceptualize, navigate, and reimagine the relationship between teacher, student, and the established knowledge being taught in the classroom. Critical pedagogues argue that selectively teaching knowledge representing certain viewpoints while omitting other viewpoints fosters hegemony—dominance of one group over another—in the classroom. Such educational inequities and exclusion are tied …
Changing Perspectives Of Music Education Leaders From Boomers To Gen Z, D. Brett Nolker, Nicole K. Ramsey
Changing Perspectives Of Music Education Leaders From Boomers To Gen Z, D. Brett Nolker, Nicole K. Ramsey
Visions of Research in Music Education
Teachers involved in leadership at any level may be leading groups of people from different generations, so an understanding of expected attitudes and practices of leadership is imperative. Perspectives between generations differ in many ways, and changing views of the role and actions of a leader are important differences that directly impact music teaching and learning and the professional lives of music educators. Generation Z has now entered the university, and with them comes many differing ideas about leadership practices. Understanding leadership differences between generations can help us prepare preservice teachers for future professional roles both in the classroom and …
“Music And Me” Children´S Affinity For Music And Children´S Drawings In A Longitudinal Mixed Methods Study, Silke S. Schmid
“Music And Me” Children´S Affinity For Music And Children´S Drawings In A Longitudinal Mixed Methods Study, Silke S. Schmid
Visions of Research in Music Education
Researchers have acknowledged the perspective and agency of children to be of substantial relevance to the design of educational settings. Still, mixed methods studies delineating children´s perspective on what they experience in music education settings designed for them are rare. Departing from reflections on the theoretical concept of children´s music experience, the present article shares insights into an empirical study approaching children’s affinity for music, a construct integrating experiential qualities of liking and valuing music in a concrete educational setting. Discussed are selected findings of a mixed methods study conducted in the scope of an opera education project involving German …

Postmodernism, Music Literacies, And The Function-Oriented Music Curriculum, May Kokkidou
Visions of Research in Music Education
In our postmodern world, music educators deal with questions and problems that need in-depth exploration. As the old certainties are collapsing, today, more than ever, the challenges they face prompt them to reassess students' music knowledge and skills and their connection to real life. This paper argues that many of these challenges can be related to the functions of music, in the context of the new means of communication and postmodernism determinants. Furthermore, it argues that the functions of music are a guiding framework for a music functionbased curriculum. Finally, this paper provides examples of how professors may apply such …
America’S Most Divided Sport: Polarization And Inequality In Attitudes About Youth Football, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins
America’S Most Divided Sport: Polarization And Inequality In Attitudes About Youth Football, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Football may be America’s most popular sport, but with growing evidence of the risk of sport-associated concussions, some adults are reconsidering which sports to encourage children to play. Using data from a nationally representative sample of 958 respondents, we examine how political party, belief in patriotic displays in sport, attention to concussion news, social class, and race are associated with support for children playing each of the five major U.S. sports: baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, and football. Our findings suggest that unlike other sports, attitudes about youth participation in football are divided by views on patriotism in sport, age, race, …

This brief summarizes findings on learning loss among adolescent girls during the pandemic in rural Bangladesh.
Women Report Worse Employment Impacts From Family Caregiving, Claire Pendergrast
Women Report Worse Employment Impacts From Family Caregiving, Claire Pendergrast
Population Health Research Brief Series
29.2 million people in the United States, most of them women, act as family caregivers while also holding down a paying job. U.S. social policy is notoriously unsupportive of family caregivers. As a result, families struggling to balance caregiving and paid employment face emotional, social, and financial stress, with especially severe negative impacts for women. This brief uses a nationally representative sample of family caregivers participating the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) to describe gender differences in how providing care to a family member impacts caregivers’ employment experiences. Findings suggest that women are more likely than men to provide …

Consumers' Perception Of Food Containing Insect Protein Affected By Serving Condition And Questionnaire Protocol, Yupeng Gao
LSU Master's Theses
Edible insects are a new sustainable protein source compared to meat. Western consumers show aversion to the prospect of insects as food due to unfamiliarity, food neophobia, and negative emotions. This dissertation research explored consumers’ emotional perception of insect-based food products presented under different testing conditions and examined the influence of other people’s emotional expressions towards consumers’ purchase decisions. To identify and rate emotion intensities, tests were conducted using three presenting formats including text, image, and an actual product; all of which were applied for both cookies containing insects and without insects. In addition to these presenting formats, news of …

Black Suburbanization: Causes And Consequences Of A Transformation Of American Cities, Alexander W. Bartik, Evan Mast
Black Suburbanization: Causes And Consequences Of A Transformation Of American Cities, Alexander W. Bartik, Evan Mast
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Since 1970, the share of Black individuals living in suburbs of large cities has risen from 16 to 36 percent. This shift is as large as the post-World War II wave of the Great Migration. We first show that Black suburbanization has led to major changes in neighborhoods, accounting for a large share of recent increases in both the average Black individual’s neighborhood quality and within-Black income segregation. We then show that changes in relative suburban amenities and housing prices explain about 60 and 30 percent, respectively, of Black suburbanization, while regional reallocation, changing educational attainment, and gentrification play only …

Nduma, Fokunang Estella Tembe, Mbong Sidonnie Eyambe, Keziah Ezra, Henry Che Ngwa, Emmanuel Ombugadu Sabo
Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Abortion is a common but controversial phenomenon globally. The discourse on the legality of abortion remains intricate, leaving a substantial number of women restricted from accessing safe abortion. There are evidence of an association between restrictive abortion laws, unsafe abortions, and maternal mortality in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). We explore how restrictive abortion laws violate women’s right to health and bodily integrity. We used Carol Bacchi’s policy framework to analyze how restrictive abortion laws have been discursively framed (problematization); the assumptions that underpinned the representation; the consequences of the representation; what was left unproblematic; how the representation could be questioned, …

Civic Education In K-12 School Enhanced Through A Christian Faith Lens Perspective, Alex R. Lin Dr., Kathy H. Rim Dr.
Civic Education In K-12 School Enhanced Through A Christian Faith Lens Perspective, Alex R. Lin Dr., Kathy H. Rim Dr.
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Nationwide concerns about the declining political health of the United States has prompted questions on how to instruct and prepare youth to engage in civic life, particularly in K-12 public schools. This priority is also known as civic education, a broad curricular approach aimed at facilitating students’ development of key civic knowledge, skills, and behaviors. Fortunately, the Christian worldview can enhance the individuals' ability to effectively teach students about the importance of civics due to overlaps in community values. This literature review draws on theoretical and empirical work to provide an integrative framework that fuses Christian ethos with civic …
Community Of Practice In Integrated Stem Education: A Systematic Literature Review, Jung Han, Todd R. Kelley, Nathan Mentzer, J. Geoff Knowles
Community Of Practice In Integrated Stem Education: A Systematic Literature Review, Jung Han, Todd R. Kelley, Nathan Mentzer, J. Geoff Knowles
Journal of STEM Teacher Education
The efforts to integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in K-12 education have been increasing to help student learning and enhance 21st-century skills. The integrated STEM approach not only has pedagogical effects but also helps students prepare for STEM-related careers (ITEEA, 2020; NRC, 2012). Integrated STEM education is grounded in authentic, situated, and contextual learning, where Community of Practice plays a critical role. However, although educators and researchers have advocated Community of Practice as an important concept for learning, empirical research on Community of Practice within the integrated STEM context is limited. Additionally, how integrated STEM Communities of Practice …

The Teaching Approach Of A Notable African-American Music Teacher: An Intrinsic Case Study, C. Michael Palmer
Visions of Research in Music Education
This intrinsic case study examined the teaching philosophy and practice of Victoria Miller, a notable African-American music educator in Detroit. Utilizing the theoretical frameworks of social constructivism and Black feminism, I sought to answer the following research questions: (a) How does the teacher describe her teaching? (b) How do her students describe her teaching? and (c) How does her cultural background as an African American woman teacher influence her teaching? Data collected for this study consisted of field notes, teacher interviews, student interviews, and artifacts. Analysis of the data yielded four dominant themes: (a) Religious influence on teaching practice, (b) …

“Every Time I Leave Class, I’M Happy”: Community Perspectives In A Community-University Partnership, Susan A. Davis
Visions of Research in Music Education
The University of South Carolina String Project (USCSP), model site for over thirty community-university partnerships in the United States, offers a unique amalgam of community music and music teacher education. Community partners participate as music makers taught by university students within a teacher education program. The researcher implemented a 14-month intrinsic case study of the USCSP to understand how each group of USCSP participants – the university undergraduates, the community, the faculty and institution – experienced their engagement in the community-university partnership. This article explores the multidimensional experience of community participation in the USCSP as a dynamic community of practice. …

How Did I End Up Here?: The Realities Of Teaching Music Education At Small Colleges And Universities, Scott N. Edgar, Kimberly H. Councill, Richard D. Edwards, Edward C. Hoffman, Iii, Amy Spears
Visions of Research in Music Education
Throughout this phenomenological narrative study, we examined our lived experiences as five music teacher educators working in small, liberal arts universities across the United States. Data included personal and shared narratives from each participant, and each story was coded for similar themes in our overarching realities of serving as the “lone” music education faculty member at our schools. The six core themes that emerged were: (a) music education faculty at small universities must assume augmented and varied responsibilities, both in and outside the music education curriculum; (b) recruitment is a heightened priority; (c) small class sizes offer both benefits and …
Musical Architects: Immersive Learning Through Design Thinking In A Kindergarten Music Composition Curriculum, Elissa Johnson-Green
Musical Architects: Immersive Learning Through Design Thinking In A Kindergarten Music Composition Curriculum, Elissa Johnson-Green
Visions of Research in Music Education
This qualitative study focuses on building a fully immersive musical-architecture composition curriculum for three general music classes of kindergarteners (N=45). Students composed original music using a set of engineering and design precepts. As part of the compositional process, they used Lego bricks to construct three-dimensional representations of their compositions. The children also wrote musical scores using their own notation as a mnemonic device, a “blueprint,” which they read while they played their pieces. They could then choose to perform their completed pieces in class and record them as part of their creative process. Each child composed using a keyboard, which …

Parental Influences That Impact First-Generation College Students' College Choice: A Qualitative Inquiry Of Student Perceptions, Tiffany Cresswell-Yeager
Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education
This qualitative study explored first-generation college students’ perceptions about the influence that their parents had on their college choice process. Using in-depth interviews and focus groups with first generation college students, this study explored their experiences and perceptions of the impact of their socioeconomic status. First-generation college students face obstacles in knowledge and resources and tend to have lower educational aspirations than non-first-generation students. I wanted to understand their experiences in their voice—providing support for the use of qualitative methods. Using the sociological concepts of social and cultural capital as a framework, this study found the participants knew that because …
