Anthropocentrism: More Than Just A Misunderstood Problem, Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor, John Piccolo
Anthropocentrism: More Than Just A Misunderstood Problem, Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor, John Piccolo
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Anthropocentrism, in its original connotation in environmental ethics, is the belief that value is human-centered and that all other beings are means to human ends. Environmentally-concerned authors have argued that anthropocentrism is ethically wrong and at the root of ecological crises. Some environmental ethicists argue, however, that critics of anthropocentrism are misguided or even misanthropic. They contend: first that criticism of anthropocentrism can be counterproductive and misleading by failing to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate human interests. Second, that humans differ greatly in their environmental impacts, and consequently, addressing human inequalities should be a precondition for environmental protection. Third, since …

Resilience In The Bipoc Community: A Systematic Review, Lianelys Cabrera Martinez, Aldo Barrita B.A., Gloria Wong-Padoongpatt Ph.D.
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
The present study is a systematic literature review on the psychology of resilience, or the ability to bounce back after a difficult situation. Although resilience is a timely and relevant variable in social psychology, little is known about its connection to the racism-related experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). This review explores how resilience manifests in the BIPOC community and its influence on the identity of minority groups. Previous research has shown that BIPOC reports higher resilience; however, there is still uncertainty around its connection to discrimination. Through the analysis of nine final research articles, we examined …
Evidence-Informed Planning And Action In Central Asia: Learnings From The Tajikistan Adolescent Wellbeing And Health Pilot Project, Population Council
Evidence-Informed Planning And Action In Central Asia: Learnings From The Tajikistan Adolescent Wellbeing And Health Pilot Project, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
To address adolescent health and wellbeing in Tajikistan, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Population Council used a hybrid human-centered (HCD) and evidence-based program design to engage adolescent girls, boys, and caregivers in a guided process of defining key issues and program areas. The design informed the development of a first-of-its-kind program model for AKF and in Tajikistan: coordinated community-based groups for adolescent girls and boys, caregivers' groups, and an institutional stakeholder community of practice in Tajikistan. Design and implementation experiences established "proof of concept" as a basis to expand the approach across the country and region. The pilot generated …

An Employee Services Model: Morale And Satisfaction, David L. Groves, Bryan Cavins
Visions in Leisure and Business
The Raube manuscript was used as a secondary source to obtain a historical perspective about important factors that influence employees. Included in this assessment was a perspective from employees, management, and unions. This type of analysis is essential to understand the relationships between management and employees and be able to develop a model of collaboration and cooperation from both perspectives.
It is obvious that diverse factors are important during different time periods. It is essential though to understand the different time periods and their influences. This type of information will provide a longitudinal perspective and a better understanding of the …

Pseudo-Patriotism, Polemics, And Propaganda: European ‘Indianness’ And Contemporary German Populism, Dagmar Wernitznig
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
This article highlights and explores new nuances of colonialisms that can be witnessed in German populist politics in conjunction with public discourses about migration and refugeedom. In their xenophobic aversion towards aliens, ultra-nationalist organizations and parties in Germany pervert the colonial trauma of Native American peoples by projecting it onto their own existence. By drawing analogies between their own lives and the plight of Native American expulsion or forceful assimilation since the arrival of the first European settlers, right-wing individuals and groups perceive themselves as a vanishing tribe that is threatened with extinction, caused by Arabic and African newcomers …

Humans (Really) Are Animals: Picture-Book Reading Influences 5-Year-Old Urban Children’S Construal Of The Relation Between Humans And Non-Human Animals, Sandra Waxman, Patricia Herrmann, Jennifer Woodring, Douglas Medin
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
What is the relation between humans and non-human animals? From a biological perspective, we view humans as one species among many, but in the fables and films we create for children, we often offer an anthropocentric perspective, imbuing non-human animals with human-like characteristics. What are the consequences of these distinctly different perspectives on children’s reasoning about the natural world? Some have argued that children universally begin with an anthropocentric perspective and that acquiring a biological perspective requires a basic conceptual change (Carey, 1985). But recent work reveals that this anthropocentric perspective, evidenced in urban 5-year-olds, is not evident in 3-year-olds …

A Meaningful Paradox Of Color-Blind Racism And Racial Literacy: Understanding The Phenomena Of White Women Teachers Educating Students Of Color, Alaisa Rigoni Grudzinski
A Meaningful Paradox Of Color-Blind Racism And Racial Literacy: Understanding The Phenomena Of White Women Teachers Educating Students Of Color, Alaisa Rigoni Grudzinski
Theses & Dissertations
Recognizing school resegregation and the demographic imperative as systemic problems impacting the educational outcomes of students of Color, this study examined the role of White women teachers’ racial views within the sociocultural context of teaching and learning. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore how 15 high school teachers described their lived experiences as educators of Latinx, Black, and Asian students in a racially diverse, public high school on Long Island, New York. This qualitative study was conceptualized through combining the theoretical lens of critical whiteness studies and critical pedagogy utilizing a qualitative phenomenological methodology for data collection, with …

Beauty, Real Or Apparent: Christian Kings, Muslim Artisans, And The Development Of An Imperial Image Through The Silk And Horticulture Industries In Sicily. (Ca. 1090-1190), Casey K. Brown
History ETDs
In the wake of the Norman conquest of Sicily in the second half of the eleventh century, the Mediterranean island housed a diverse collection of Greek, Latin, and Muslim communities. Norman kings chose Palermo to become the seat of Latin-Christian Sicilian government for its productivity and strategic location and included the island into the complex world of self-fashioning politics and exchange. For Sicilian and ‘foreign’ Muslims alike, the imperious pose Roger II and his successors held created a precarious balancing act between the real and imagined worlds of Sicily. The content of this thesis is primarily concerned with the impact …
Intersectionality, Relational Positionality, And The Lived Experiences Of Inequality: Contextualizing Intergenerational Opioid Use And The Constrained Choices Of Indigenous, Latina, And White Women Caregivers In Rural New Mexico, Carmela M. Roybal
Sociology ETDs
Opioid addiction is a serious and persistent global health issue. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that between 1999 and 2016, more than 630,000 people in the United States died of an overdose of a prescription opioid or illicit drug (CDC 2018). Extant research has suggested that for nearly a century, New Mexico has experienced some of the highest rates of prescription and illicit opioid death in the nation (Goldstein and Herrera, 1995; Landon, 2003; Shah et al., 2008). I examined intergenerational opioid dependence through the lived experience of women caregivers of opioid-addicted family members. Data …

Athletes With Neurodegenerative Disease: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Family Members’ Experiences, Matthew J. Smith, Georgia Young, John Batten, Keith D. Parry, Rosie Collins, Eric Anderson, Adam J. White
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with 15 family members (mainly partners and children) of deceased athletes who experienced deterioration in their neurological health towards the end of their life. The purpose of this study was to examine the stressors these family members experienced with the ailed players, their emotional responses to their family member’s condition, as well as the coping strategies they used. Vertical and horizontal thematic analyses were conducted on the data, which revealed five distinct temporal stages, a range of emotional responses, as well as accompanying stressors and coping strategies at each temporal stage. The findings are …

The rapid development of the digital world has opened wider networks for the formation of the global economy, which has also led to the emergence of various business transactions involving many financial technology-based financial companies (Fintech), which provide services similar to banking functions. Fintech is expected to drive the industrial revolution in the form of online digital technology, which is based on new technology that will change the entire production and management chain in each branch of industry. The Fintech company is growing rapidly and significantly in Indonesia, where the Fintech sub-sector is seen to flourish, namely lending and e-wallet …
How U.S. Gdp Affects Prison Population: Discrediting Conceptions Of Recessions, Michael Mcpherson
How U.S. Gdp Affects Prison Population: Discrediting Conceptions Of Recessions, Michael Mcpherson
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This research was designed to discover correlative effects of US GDP with prison population. This arose out of the lack of studies conducted on economic effects of prison laborers within the U.S. economic framework. A rudimentary statistical regression was executed to determine the effects of real GDP based in the year 2012 with the U.S. prison population. Qualitative and theoretical sources supplemented the analysis to provide context to the trends that were discovered. Change in U.S. GDP was found to have ambiguous effects on the prison population which debunks the notion that recessions cause escalations in serious criminal activity.

Factors Affecting The Work-Life Balance Of Flight Instructors, Se Hee Sim, Daniel Kim, Omar Perez
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
In recent years, work-life balance has become a key area of concern for employees and organizations all over the world. Employees’ work-life balance has a direct impact on their quality of life, work, and personal well-being. While many researchers have conducted studies investigating the factors affecting work-life balance for various group of employees—e.g., remote workers, female bank employees, corporate managers, physicians and clinicians, etc., work-life balance for flight instructors has never been studied. Flight instructors provide critical service for the aviation industry by teaching students how to fly aircrafts through classroom, simulator, and live flight instruction. They are required to …
Three Essays In Development And Environmental Economics, Michael Benjamin Goodwin
Three Essays In Development And Environmental Economics, Michael Benjamin Goodwin
Economics ETDs
This dissertation explores three unique topics in development and environmental economics. The first paper looks at the value people place on clean air in Mexico City using an alternative air pollution measure to the typical ground measurement. Research and policy addressing air pollution remains hampered by a lack of ground level air quality data. This study attempts to overcome this issue using aerosol optical depth from satellite imagery as a proxy for air pollution. Using a hedonic framework and least squares estimation, results show that Mexico City residents place a significant value on clean air as demonstrated by their choices …

The organization of space through history is a difficult show in terms of research, but pleasant on the side of diachronic knowledge allowing knowledge of the present in order to be able to orient reflection towards the future. If in Morocco geography imposes and history disposes, local characteristics have then contributed to the organization of human groups throughout history. However, in the present time, it is the state institutions that organize the population within the units of territorial division, this is also contracted with competitive private activities in areas made by competition.

Juridical and Doctrinal issues have been an interesting topic in historical research in its entirety. Despite the amount of information, they provide, they have been considered, until recently, defunct and not approved. In this article, we will deal with the topic of the social and economic effects of epidemics and famines through doctrinal books. Such crises and pandemics affected people in general, and new incidents and situations appeared with them, which made the public stand unable to clarify the permissible from the forbidden. This intersects between what is religious, social and economic. Similarly, the opinion of the Shariah differs according …

Tracing the movement of scientific and intellectual production that the Souss region has known throughout history clearly illustrates the importance and components of the Sousse personality and its scientific and cultural radiance. The scientific renaissance began in the ninth century AH which was truly a good start of teaching and writing. Then the tenth century came, and it emerged with a broader scientific and literary movement than before. In this period, scholars participated in vital socio-political battlefields. Thus, they participated in public matters, and took over the leadership of the people, and they were behind the consolidation of the Saadian …
