Labouring For Inclusion: Debating Immigrant Contributions To Chile, Megan Sheehan
Labouring For Inclusion: Debating Immigrant Contributions To Chile, Megan Sheehan
Sociology Faculty Publications
Over the last three decades, Chile has experienced transformative migratory flows, becoming more diverse in the process. As migrants from Latin American and Caribbean countries settle in Chile, they often face stereotypes laminating race, ethnicity, and nationality and shape paths toward inclusion through the job market. Amid the implementation of visa restrictions and the rollout of a new migration law, current debates over migration foreground ideas about which groups productively contribute to the nation’s development – discourses often linked to labour. Government rhetoric and policy debates frame a broader discussion of the role of migration in Chile, with both Chileans …

Assessing Alexithymia In Forensic Settings: Psychometric Properties Of The 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale Among Incarcerated Adult Offenders, David A. Preece, Cate L. Parry, Maria [Ricks] M. Allan, Alfred Allan
Assessing Alexithymia In Forensic Settings: Psychometric Properties Of The 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale Among Incarcerated Adult Offenders, David A. Preece, Cate L. Parry, Maria [Ricks] M. Allan, Alfred Allan
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Alexithymia is a trait involving difficulty identifying feelings (DIF), difficulty describing feelings (DDF) and externally orientated thinking (EOT). It is a risk factor for criminal behaviour. It is commonly assessed with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), but the psychometrics of the TAS-20 have not been tested across the range of offender populations, and it has been suggested it might be unsuitable in incarcerated offenders. Aim: To establish the psychometrics of the TAS-20 among incarcerated offenders.
Methods: Factorial validity was examined using confirmatory factor analyses, and the invariance of this factor structure was tested against a published community sample. Reliability …

“For The People: A Collaborative Space Assessment”: A Joyful Interpretation Of Room Design, Anne Holland
Honors Projects
To create a space that matters one must focus on the needs of the people who will use it. It is easy to create a beautiful space, however if that space does not function for those it was built for it has no point. Currently in the basement of Founders Residence Hall on the Bowling Green State University campus there is an old unused cafeteria space. This space has not only the potential but the ability to become something new, something of use. It is an area that could not only be renovated and redone by the Honors College but …

Hypertension, a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases, remains poorly controlled in many countries. In the Philippines, it is still one of the leading causes of preventable deaths despite the accessibility and availability of essential technologies and medicine to detect and treat hypertension. This paper characterizes the ‘therapeutic itineraries’ of people with hypertension from poor communities in rural and urban settings in the Philippines. We employ longitudinal qualitative methodology comprised of repeat interviews and digital diaries using mobile phones from 40 recruited participants in 12 months. Our findings demonstrate that therapeutic itineraries, rather than being organized according to categories that …
Responding To Violence From Abroad: The Mexican Diaspora Mobilising From Brussels And Paris Through Art-Based Strategies, Larisa Lara-Guerrero
Responding To Violence From Abroad: The Mexican Diaspora Mobilising From Brussels And Paris Through Art-Based Strategies, Larisa Lara-Guerrero
Peace and Conflict Studies
Over 150,000 people were intentionally killed in Mexico since 2006, after the Mexican government decided to openly combat organized crime. Against the backdrop of the security crisis, members of Mexican society have developed national and transnational strategies to contribute to the respond to the rampant violence in their homeland.
By introducing a transdisciplinary approach and peacebuilding theories, this paper argues that Mexican migrants living in Brussels and Paris have been able to orchestrate transnational art-based strategies to contribute to the violence alleviation in their country of origin. In particular, this empirical paper argues that Mexican migrants living in these two …

Stigma And The Social Function Of Fate In The Story Of Túrin Turambar, Clare Moore
Stigma And The Social Function Of Fate In The Story Of Túrin Turambar, Clare Moore
Journal of Tolkien Research
This paper applies Erving Goffman's theories of stigma to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin in order to explore the social function of Túrin's fate throughout the narrative. Interpreting fate as a stigma reveals the role society plays in the tragedy of Túrin's story through the lens of a social model of disability.
Technologies And Social Intervention: Ethical Considerations, Sandra Barros
Technologies And Social Intervention: Ethical Considerations, Sandra Barros
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article addresses the use of Information and Communication Technologies within the Social Work discipline. It highlights the necessity to reanalyze and reconceptualize our intervention strategies, due to the widespread use of digital technologies, and the importance of having academic study plans that include the necessary digital rights and abilities. The challenges associated with the use of Information and Communication Technologies within the current historical-social context demand that we adopt and maintain a critical ethical attitude. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of reassessing available methods and tools to improve social work practice and education.
Digital Social Work: Towards Digital Disruption In Social Work, Joaquín Castillo De Mesa
Digital Social Work: Towards Digital Disruption In Social Work, Joaquín Castillo De Mesa
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The digital transformation is posing a challenge to organizations, professionals, and the scientific community within Social Work. Until now, digital solutions have been incorporated spontaneously and arbitrarily, without models to contemplate and guide their incorporation. This has generated great uncertainty amongst social workers, who do not know what media should be adopted, in what form, and under what circumstances. In this article, we will review three digital solution models which Social Work has been adopting in an evolutionary manner: adaptation, transition, and digital disruption. Digital adaptation has meant spontaneously incorporating digital media which were not specifically intended for professional practice. …

Using Big Data To Manage Social Inclusion Programs, Esther Raya Diez, Manuel Trujillo Carmona, Domingo Carbonero Muñoz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Technological developments based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and empirical science in all areas of society are opening new opportunities for social work and social inclusion programs. AI relies on Big Data management systems, which in turn provide opportunities for descriptive inference and preventative measures, as well as data-informed decision making.
This article outlines the characteristics of Big Data and describes the process of designing a tool for diagnosing social exclusion, the SiSo scale. The tool consists of a scale that uses 25 variables to assess situations of social difficulty on the inclusion-exclusion spectrum. It is currently being used in the …

Home Visit Training In Social Work With Virtual Reality, Mª Ángeles Minguela Recover, Pedro Hernández Lafuente, José Miguel Mota Macias
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The incorporation of virtual reality and mobile learning methodology in university teaching facilitates the teaching-learning process of concepts and complex visualization processes for students, as is the case in social work. The goal of this article is to present the iSWAPP© application aimed at social work students training in complex skills such as observation, active listening, and interviewing through home visits. Among the results, we find how the student recreates the process of assessing situations of dependence. The main finding is how virtual reality becomes an additional learning tool by allowing students to assume the social worker’s role and design …

Could Whatsapp Be An Intervention Tool For Digital Social Work? A Case Study, Antonio Eito Mateo, María José Gómez Poyato, Antonio Matías Solanilla
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Ensuring that individuals who exhibit difficulties or problems are able to stay in their family and community environments has been an issue of concern for governments and welfare states for several decades. Authorities now seek to reverse the impact of periods or years of institutionalization and concealment of a variety of personal and social realities.
It should be highlighted that two phenomena, in particular, have increased interest in helping to keep individuals in their homes and community. First, aging populations and increased life expectancy, and second, the possibilities afforded by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The aging population is a …

Digital Intervention, Covid-19, And Critical Realism: Toward A Science Of Digital Social Work, Antonio López Peláez, Chaime Marcuello Servós
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up the pace of the digital transition process in which we have been immersed. In a context of generalized lockdown, our organizations have been forced to go digital and many of the activities social workers perform must now be done remotely. As a result, e-social work, or digital social work, has gone from being an emerging specialization to a critical specialty across organizations and activities. In this article, we examine some basic scientific and methodological foundations to develop a science of social work from the perspective of critical realism, with special attention to digitalization. Establishing …

Differences In Income For Foreign-Born Blacks Across Settlement Types In An Era Of Rising Anti-Immigration Sentiment, Sandra F. Weir
Differences In Income For Foreign-Born Blacks Across Settlement Types In An Era Of Rising Anti-Immigration Sentiment, Sandra F. Weir
MA Research Paper
Traditional immigration patterns show immigrants in the United States settling in cities with a high density of co-ethnics called ethnic enclaves. There has been a shift in the last three decades where immigrants are moving to suburbs with a high density of one ethnic group called an ‘ethnoburb’ or mixed ethnicity suburbs. Partly reflecting the composition of migration flows, prior work has heavily focused on foreign-born Hispanics and Asians. Less attention has been paid to the settlement patterns of foreign-born Blacks. Furthermore, immigration has become more contested in the United States due to changing political discourse and it is unclear …
A Middle Ground: The Gendered Division Of Housework In Heterosexual Mixed-Nativity Couples, Rebecca Rayner
A Middle Ground: The Gendered Division Of Housework In Heterosexual Mixed-Nativity Couples, Rebecca Rayner
MA Research Paper
Little is known about how couples in mixed-nativity marriages divide household labor compared to their peers in mixed-nativity cohabitations. Using data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata (IPUMS) files of the American Time Use Survey, this paper asks: (1) how does the division of housework for heterosexual mixed-nativity couples, both married and cohabiting, compare to that of their same-nativity counterparts? and (2) how does the gendered division of housework for heterosexual cohabiting mixed-nativity couples differ from that of married mixed- nativity couples? Findings indicate that mixed-nativity unions operate as a “middle ground” between same-nativity unions. When stratifying by marital status, …
Under The Influence? Factors That Impact Canadian’S Confidence In Police, Justin Clark
Under The Influence? Factors That Impact Canadian’S Confidence In Police, Justin Clark
MA Research Paper
The public’s confidence in police is a crucial factor to a police department’s ability to serve its community effectively. However, not everyone in a democratic society feels confident in the police’s ability to protect and serve their community. Factors including race, gender, age, education, income, neighbourhood crime perceptions, and past discrimination have all been found to have significant impacts on an individual’s confidence in police. These factors have not been evaluated in tandem, nor have they been adequately reviewed in a Canadian context. Using the 2014 Canadian General Social Survey, this study answers the following three questions: 1) How does …
A Complex Disease With Complex Discourse: Exploring The Online Messaging Of Two Canadian Obesity Charities And The Implications For Weight Stigma, Caitlin E. Turnbull
A Complex Disease With Complex Discourse: Exploring The Online Messaging Of Two Canadian Obesity Charities And The Implications For Weight Stigma, Caitlin E. Turnbull
MA Research Paper
Researchers warn that sizeism and weight stigma can prevent individuals from seeking health care, increase feelings of depression, and even contribute to weight gain and the worsening of negative health behaviours (Chrisler and Barney 2017; O’Hara and Gregg 2006; Puhl and Heuer 2009; 2010; Tomiyama 2014). The motivation for this study relates to a broader social problem of weight stigma and is premised upon evidence that suggests that stigmatizing content precipitates poor perceptions of obese individuals (Frederick et al. 2020; Puhl and Heuer 2010). Drawing upon the concept of biopedagogy, this case study qualitatively analyzes the online messages produced by …
Framing Diversity And Edi Practices: A Comparison Of Strategic Planning And Recruitment Materials In Two Canadian Universities, Michelle H. Robinson
Framing Diversity And Edi Practices: A Comparison Of Strategic Planning And Recruitment Materials In Two Canadian Universities, Michelle H. Robinson
MA Research Paper
Multiculturalism has been official Canadian policy since 1971. However, racial equity from this policy has not resulted as there continues to be persistent educational attainment gaps and underrepresentation among Indigenous and Black Canadians in higher education. Post-secondary credentials have become essential to success in knowledge economies. Given these attainment gaps, the purpose of this study was to explore how postsecondary institutions frame and promote diversity. I conducted a content analysis of strategic planning documents and viewbook recruitment materials from Canada’s two largest universities (University of Toronto and University of British Columbia) and sought out any available student racial composition data—a …
