Law Enforcement Officers, Students, And The School-To-Prison Pipeline: A Longitudinal Perspective, Jason P. Nance

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Recent data indicate that the majority of schools now have regular contact with law enforcement officers, transforming the educational experience for hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. The proper role of police officers in schools, if any, has been hotly debated for years. But this debate was elevated to an unprecedented level during the summer of 2020 following the tragic deaths of George Floyd and others, precipitating national calls to 'defund the police' and leading many school districts to reconsider their relationships with law enforcement agencies. This debate over whether police officers belong in schools continues today. While proponents argue …

Midwestern Communities’ Reaction To The 1940s And 1950s Polio Epidemics, Lauren Mcdonald Jan 2022

Midwestern Communities’ Reaction To The 1940s And 1950s Polio Epidemics, Lauren Mcdonald

Departmental Honors Projects

The 1940s and 50s’ polio epidemics resulted in the illness, death, and paralysis of thousands of children throughout the United States. Unlike other illnesses spread by poor sanitation which usually affected the lower classes, polio cases were far more prevalent among the middle class. Middle class neighborhoods’ conditions did not allow for natural immunity in early childhood. Prior research explored the urban and suburban middle class families in highly infected states like New York. However, the experiences of Midwesterners were largely ignored. In crowded city neighborhoods, polio could spread rapidly in a short period of time and then die down …

Fostering Successful Communities Of Collaboration Through Educational Partnerships: Strengthening Bilingual Learners' Language And Literacy Achievement Along The Texas-Mexican Border, Isela Almaguer

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

There is an undisputable need to form collaborative partnerships between schools, families, homes, and communities across the nation. Collaborative educational partnerships are the cornerstone for student success. With increasingly diverse student populations, schools must communicate and collaborate with families and communities to bridge the wide gap that exists between home and school. With a dominant Spanish-speaking population of Mexican descent, as that of children living in the Southern tip of the Texas-Mexican border, known as The Rio Grande Valley, barriers such as low social economic status and limited English proficiency may impede much-needed communication between schools, homes, and communities. These …

Do Networks Govern Contracts?, Matthew C. Jennejohn Jan 2022

Do Networks Govern Contracts?, Matthew C. Jennejohn

Faculty Scholarship

An influential literature in private law argues that the legal system interferes with modern markets’ “private ordering.” Private ordering refers to parties relying upon informal institutions, like social norms and reputational sanctions, to enforce legal obligations. This informal governance is made possible by thick networks of social or commercial relationships, which circulate information about parties’ behavior. Social networks, not the state, govern commerce.

This Article argues that the private ordering literature has overlooked a paradox at the heart of its theory. The same networks that circulate reputational information also provide conduits for valuable technical information to leak from one company …

(In)Valid Vaginas: Overcoming The Shame Of Vaginismus And Rejecting The Idea Of Sexual Failure, Emily Anne Fiorentino Jan 2022

(In)Valid Vaginas: Overcoming The Shame Of Vaginismus And Rejecting The Idea Of Sexual Failure, Emily Anne Fiorentino

Honors Papers

This paper seeks to understand why pelvic pain conditions cause women to feel such intense shame, and to begin to untangle the many tensions these conditions embody. Pelvic pain -- particularly vaginal pain that causes pain upon attempted penetration into the vagina, including during sex -- is commonly experienced, yet is only beginning to become common knowledge. Women with these conditions feel a great deal of shame, anxiety, and self-hatred, yet often suffer in silence. This paper examines how pelvic pain conditions are at once not taken seriously by the medical establishment, and have not been given the attention and …

From Moral Panic To Permanent War: Rhetoric And The Road To Invading Iraq, Kai Philippe Jan 2022

From Moral Panic To Permanent War: Rhetoric And The Road To Invading Iraq, Kai Philippe

Honors Papers

This thesis seeks to understand the conditions in the United States post-9/11 that enabled the Bush administration to pursue a wide-ranging and all-encompassing “War on Terror,” with substantial support from the general public. I am principally focused on two significant facets of the War on Terror: the invasion of Iraq and the establishment of a permanent security state (and the interrelated creation of a new state of exception). I ask why the George W. Bush administration was so successful in generating support for both the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and for policies that violated fundamental civil liberties; I argue …

Armored Vulnerability: Stories Of Leader Resilience Among Black Female Principals, Nichole R. Ijames

Doctor of Education Dissertations

The study employed a qualitative phenomenological design in its exploration of leader resilience, as shared through the lived experiences of 10 Black female principals. Semi-structured interviews were used to capture and examine Black women’s perceptions of how they have grown from the challenges they have experienced in the principalship. The study capitalized on the power of stories to amplify the voices and perspectives of this marginalized group of leaders. Their stories of resilience hold significance in improving our understanding of how to better provide culturally responsive leadership development for Black female principals. Findings from the study revealed five dominant themes …

Off-White: Al-Khazraji And Shaare Tefila's Potential To De-Essentialize Antidiscrimination Law Jan 2022

Off-White: Al-Khazraji And Shaare Tefila's Potential To De-Essentialize Antidiscrimination Law

Florida A & M University Law Review

The figure of the Arab Jew has historically occupied a space at the margins of Jewish life, rendered peripheral or even invisible by a lens trained on the experiences of Jews of European descent. Drawing in part from the academic lineage of Kimberl´e Kimberle Crenshaw’s theory of intersectionality, American Jews of Arab and Middle Eastern descent (“Mizrahi Jews”) are increasingly joining their Israeli counterparts and Jews of color in the United States in challenging the naturalization of Jewish whiteness in the popular imagination. In a striking parallel between this groundswell of community theorizing and legal strategy, the Supreme Court in …

Examining The Proximal Relationship Between Religious Coping And Depression Among Trauma-Exposed Adults, Emmanuel D. Thomas Jan 2022

Examining The Proximal Relationship Between Religious Coping And Depression Among Trauma-Exposed Adults, Emmanuel D. Thomas

Open Access Master's Theses

Depression is a common outcome of trauma exposure. As such, it is imperative to investigate factors that may mitigate this association. Although religious coping has been previously studied within the context of trauma, there is a dearth of research examining the potential reciprocal relationships between religious coping and depression among trauma-exposed individuals at the daily level. The current study addresses this gap in the literature by exploring the bidirectional daily relations between religious coping and depression symptoms in a community sample of trauma-exposed adults. Participants were 84 individuals with a history of sexual assault who self-identified as being religious (Mage …

Childhood Medical Trauma And Its Effect On Emerging Adult Mental Health Outcomes, Emma Ceres Jan 2022

Childhood Medical Trauma And Its Effect On Emerging Adult Mental Health Outcomes, Emma Ceres

Open Access Master's Theses

Children who have been exposed to or experienced trauma are at increased risk for developing persistent reactions that impede their daily functioning. Any situation in which a child fears for their life, anticipates injury, witnesses violence, or loses a loved one can be viewed as a childhood traumatic episode (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2003). Moreover, those coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds find themselves especially vulnerable to the effects of trauma and mental health outcomes as a result of the disparities linked to such backgrounds (Miech et al., 1999). Existing literature suggests that a medical diagnosis, as well as subsequent …
