Fashioning The Flapper: Clothing As A Catalyst For Social Change In 1920s America, Julia Wolffe
Fashioning The Flapper: Clothing As A Catalyst For Social Change In 1920s America, Julia Wolffe
Honors Program Theses
Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

Continuity And Change Of Latter-Generational Racism In The United States From 2004 - 2016, Collin Swords
Honors Program Theses
Does the intensity of racial attitudes among voters in the U.S. change from 2004-2016? Do attitudes of latter-generational racism like negative stereotyping, racial resentment, anti-black affect, and white identity impact voter’s perceptions of Presidential candidates throughout 2004 - 2016? Additionally, what is the impact of race on these preferences, specifically white racial sensitivity? This thesis examines the impact of latter-generational attitudes on Republican Presidential Candidate affect over a time series of 2004 – 2016. Over time, the Republican Party is becoming more male, white, and lower income/ educated while the Democrat Party is becoming more diverse and better educated. Over …

Social And Behavioral Vulnerability, Pregnancy, And Negative Mental Health Outcomes In The U.S. During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Stephanie A. Godleski, Casey T. Harris, Kevin M. Fitzpatrick, Ammina Kothari
Journalism & Public Relations Faculty Publications
The novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on the mental health of the general U.S. population. Extant literature has increasingly linked social vulnerabilities, risky behavior, and limited social and psychological resources to the growing mental health crisis during the virus's spread. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of pertinent social vulnerabilities and subjective risk factors for both men and women on mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, isolation) with a closer examination of the influence of pregnancy during the pandemic on mental health. The sample included 740,640 respondents participating in the U.S. Covid-19 Trends …

Human Exploitation: An Analysis Of Vulnerability, Clara Atchley, L Graham
Scholar's Day
This study explores the relationship that the vulnerability that a population experiences has to their susceptibility to exp loitation. This presentation presents preliminary analysis within Africa because it presents with the highest trends of human trafficking in comparisons to other regions. These trends were then measured against three subsets of the study’s total vulnerability measure which is defined generally as limited access to healthcare, education, wealth, and political power.

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo
Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
I present evidence of two priesthoods in the Jewish Bible: an Aaronite priesthood, held by Aaron and passed down through his descendants; and a higher Mushite priesthood, held not only by Moses and his descendants but also by other worthy individuals, such as Joshua, an Ephraimite. The Mushite priests were centered in Shiloh, where Joshua settled the Ark of the Covenant, while the Aaronites became dominant in the Jerusalem temple. Like Joshua, the prophet Lehi, a descendant of the northern tribe of Manasseh, held the higher priesthood. His ministry, as recounted in the Book of Mormon, demonstrates four characteristics that …

The Color Of Local Government: Observations Of A Brown Buffalo On Racial Impact Statements In The Movement For Water Justice, Tom I. Romero
The Color Of Local Government: Observations Of A Brown Buffalo On Racial Impact Statements In The Movement For Water Justice, Tom I. Romero
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This article is rooted larger racial justice conversations that became amplified in 2020 as the United States, and indeed the world, was literally and figuratively on fire as the interconnected pandemics of COVID-19, racial violence, and climate change-induced wildfires raged. These interconnected disasters helped reveal the ways that racial and ethnic minoritized communities disproportionately bore the brunt of economic dislocation, deadly health outcomes, and physical dislocation. For many local and state government entities, particularly those in the water sector, it also catalyzed a response to be more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and indeed color-conscious in service of racial and social equity …
The Criminal Justice System And The Lgbtq Community: An Anti-Queer Regime, Steven Peck
The Criminal Justice System And The Lgbtq Community: An Anti-Queer Regime, Steven Peck
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The LGBTQ community in the US, while experiencing great strides in social equality, continues to suffer disproportionately in the criminal justice system. Historical precedents of criminalizing the LGBTQ community are rife within the criminal justice system; the establishment of anti-sodomy laws, belief of inherent criminality, and a heteronormative perspective have all fostered a greater anti-queer regime. The criminalization and incarceration of the LGBTQ community remain steadfastly in place, with little to no reprieve. Establishing a new narrative in the criminalization and imprisonment of the LGBTQ community may assist in efforts to achieve real change within the criminal justice system. Moving …
No Longer Strangers And Aliens, But Fellow Citizens: Ephesians 2:12, 19 In Conversation With Hellenistic Philosophy, Philip N. Richardson
No Longer Strangers And Aliens, But Fellow Citizens: Ephesians 2:12, 19 In Conversation With Hellenistic Philosophy, Philip N. Richardson
The Asbury Journal
This essay compares Paul’s use of aliens, strangers, and citizens language in Eph 2:12, 19 in the wider context of the epistle with its figurative use in select Hellenistic Philosophical writers. Whereas philosophers view all, or at least the virtuous, as citizens of the universe, Ephesians sees all as alienated from God, unless reconciled by Christ. Philosophy called the virtuous to live in accord with its path, disdaining the body. For Ephesians, Christ’s new humanity in Christ can live God’s way in the body by the mystery revealed and empowered by the Spirit.
Cloud 10: An Exploration Of Immersive Theatre’S Many Benefits And The Process Of Creating My Own Cafe, Kyla Hunter
Cloud 10: An Exploration Of Immersive Theatre’S Many Benefits And The Process Of Creating My Own Cafe, Kyla Hunter
Theses & ETDs
Immersive theatre, at its core, prioritizes bodies and the human experience. Theatre goers are typically acclimated to a passive experience that encourages distancing between the audience and the imagined world. So, by utilizing immersive theatre as a tool, I will be bridging that gap and exploring how the benefits of this genre help to integrate non- traditional theatre goers into the world of theatre. I do this by examining immersive theatre's use of sensory stimulation, audience engagement and agency, interactivity, connectivity, and more. With this in mind, I’ve created my own immersive theatre piece, Cloud 10: an immersive and interactive …

Collaboration In The New Context Of Digital Learning: An Investigation Of Collaborative Hyflex And Remote Learning At New College Of Florida, Gabriela Bell-Nunez
Theses & ETDs
In this sociological study, I aim to address how digital technologies function to facilitate collaboration among students and between students and professors. I explore this topic through an analysis of the way students used platforms to collaborate in the Fall 2020 courses offered at New College of Florida. The study uses a multi-method approach that includes a survey of New College faculty, semi-structured interviews with three professors and six students (two per course), and content analysis of the course syllabus for each interviewed professor’s course. I found that technological familiarity affected the extent of students’ collaboration, and the type of …
How The Dutch Woonerf Can Inspire Better Streetscapes In North America, Tyler Menendez
How The Dutch Woonerf Can Inspire Better Streetscapes In North America, Tyler Menendez
Theses & ETDs
The Dutch woonerf is a concept born out of the necessity to prevent the incursion of the automobile on residential streetscapes. However, the woonerf is an outlier when it comes to urban planning, as the automobile has come to be a dominant force in many cities. North America was at the forefront of auto-centric planning, which had many ramifications for its cities. Between the demolition of housing to build new highways, to the car-centric street design in dense urban centers, people have been pushed out one way, or another. Amsterdam, a model city of modern urban planning, was on the …
Latinx First-Generation Students In Los Angeles And The Fight For Four Year College Attainment, Diana Quintero
Latinx First-Generation Students In Los Angeles And The Fight For Four Year College Attainment, Diana Quintero
Theses & ETDs
This study explores barriers and support systems first generation Latinx students in Los Angeles face in their pursuit of higher education. Under the context of a multilayered model of college enrollment, this research study will focus on a single layer where aspects of firstgeneration students’ experiences such as self-efficacy along with knowledge about financial aid and college applications can help us understand their enrollment outcome. The data for this research will be contingent on 50-minute interviews with participants that meet the criteria. Academic preparation and achievement, financial resources, knowledge and information about college, and family support appear to be key …

Performance As A Means Of Corporate Persuasion- An Elizabeth Holmes Case Study, Aleah Colon Alfonso
Theses & ETDs
This thesis utilizes a lens of performance to conduct a comprehensive case study of Elizabeth Holmes, a once world-renowned entrepreneur who used persuasion to defraud investors and create a company valued at $9 billion. Goffman’s model of self-presentation as performance is used as the overarching framework through which Holmes and her use of performance in corporate settings is explored. This thesis presents a literature review which details performance and its ability to persuade others, the role of corporate theatre in business leaders, entrepreneurial persuasion and business success, and how gendered self-presentation affects entrepreneurship. The methods section delineates how grounded theory …
The Case For Reproducibility: A Series Of Political Behavior Replications, Sarah Mcnitt
The Case For Reproducibility: A Series Of Political Behavior Replications, Sarah Mcnitt
Theses & ETDs
The scientific method has always included a step for retesting hypotheses, but it is often overlooked. Reproducibility in research of any field is increasingly more important as data and analyses become more complex. With replication, scientists can find more support for their theories, or come to new conclusions as time passes and contexts change. I replicate three political behavior studies to demonstrate the importance of reproducibility, using various datasets and statistical methods. I find that some political behavior conclusions still hold true while others have changed in tandem with the political landscape.
Behind The Mask: Defining Masking Behavior In Adhd, Tara Norton
Behind The Mask: Defining Masking Behavior In Adhd, Tara Norton
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of this research is to more precisely and concretely define examples of masking behaviors for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a highly prevalent neurobehavioral disorder that occurs in 3– 7% of children.” (Kloo & Kain, 2016). Masking behavior is any action that neurodivergent individuals, such as people with ADHD, engage in to appear more socially acceptable. Masking behavior has been formally researched in Autism Spectrum Disorder, but there is very little formal research conducted on masking behavior in ADHD. In the current study, an online survey about masking behavior in ADHD was …

Commensality In The Cafeteria: How Eating With Others Relates To Well-Being, Social Capital, And Group Cohesion, Noah Opalsky
Theses & ETDs
Commensality or the act of eating with others has evolved broadly to better encapsulate the act of eating as a distinctly social phenomenon. Commensality can take on many forms and people can gather around a table for many reasons, but there is always a distinct aspect of spending time with others as a way to form, maintain, and strengthen the bonds between them and as a way to enjoy time with others increasing one’s happiness, gratitude, and overall well-being. Thus, a mixed methods study consisting of a survey and semi-structured interviews was conducted in order to better understand the ways …
Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts
Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines a selection of songs by various mainstream Korean hip-hop artists to understand how they perform Blackness in a transnational context. This research employs a qualitative content analysis of song lyrics from twenty-four songs selected through both convenience and purposeful sampling. The songs examined are from thirty-nine hip-hop artists, both Korean and Korean-American/Canadian, who self-identified as Korean hip-hop artists. Along with supplemental theories, Marc D. Perry's "self-fashioning" (2008) and Geoff Harkness' "situational authenticity" (2012) are central theoretical frameworks in this thesis. The findings from the content analysis are organized into four themes: linguistics, culture/positionality, conventions, and class status. …
Deconstructing The Viking Archetype: The Erasure Of Marginalized Groups From Viking History, Leviathan Fisher
Deconstructing The Viking Archetype: The Erasure Of Marginalized Groups From Viking History, Leviathan Fisher
Theses & ETDs
In the most authoritative early works on Viking history, there is a notable lack of discussion about Vikings that were nonwhite, queer, or gender nonconforming. These texts, nineteenth and early twentieth century creations of European/American men, instead focused on the interests of their authors: other Anglo-European men. The erasure of marginalized groups from the literature ensured that these groups were not a part of the Viking revival that introduced physical stereotypes to the public consciousness, and as a result Victorian popular culture crystallized the image of Vikings as blonde-haired, blue- eyed, cisgender-heterosexual, and white. This same image remains in modern …
Health In Transition: Transgender Vulnerability And The Role Of Medical Institutions, Brandon Heil
Health In Transition: Transgender Vulnerability And The Role Of Medical Institutions, Brandon Heil
Theses & ETDs
The transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) population in the United States is growing, and currently faces unprecedented amounts of violence and discrimination. Discrimination harms mental and physical health and ultimately adds to the high rates of suicide and targeted violence of TGNC people. I investigate the contributions of medical discrimination, especially in considering both the specific health care needs of this population and the urgency of other TGNC issues. Utilizing clinical and psychological literature, national surveys, and resources from activists and non-profit organizations, I identify a model that describes TGNC vulnerability. I also suggest that the concept of minority stress is …
Complications With Historical Production: American History, Bias, And Latine Representation, Gabriela Ott
Complications With Historical Production: American History, Bias, And Latine Representation, Gabriela Ott
Theses & ETDs
This thesis aims to investigate how American history professors’ attitudes relate to the texts assigned to their students and how these readings portray Latines. Past research indicates that historical production of history narratives have been impacted by national identity, linguistic choices, instructors’ perspectives, and prejudice. These key ideas in historical narrative creation can have psychological ramifications for Latine students, such as stereotype threat or transmission, self-esteem alteration, personal disengagement, and lowered sense of belonging. The study examined six American history professors’ syllabi and survey results to see how Latines were represented in assigned readings and if there was a connection …

Poetry For A New Future: Four Black Female Poets During The Black Arts Movement, Paige Jackson
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I investigated the driving force of Black Female Poets’ voices challenging the state of America during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. I evaluated and analyzed the poetic works of Audre Lorde, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, and Ntozake Shange. Publications by and about these four female poets who were active during the Black Arts Movement were evaluated and analyzed to identify the poets’ intentions, the audiences they hoped to reach and the aspects of society they sought to change.

On 20 March 2020, the four adult convicts of the 2012 Delhi rape case were executed after a long debate regarding the punishment for their crime. The Delhi rape case, unlike others, was also given to the fast track court because of the worldwide outrage India received in its aftermath. Otherwise, most rape survivors rarely speak out and if they do, their lives are often endangered and threatened, depending on the severity of the case itself and the perpetrator's rank in the society. Through the analysis of Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's, 2016 film Pink, and Ajay Bahl's film Section 375 …
Cumulative Disaster Exposure And Hypertension Among Mothers Who Survived Hurricane Katrina, Marie-Claire Meadows
Cumulative Disaster Exposure And Hypertension Among Mothers Who Survived Hurricane Katrina, Marie-Claire Meadows
Public Health Theses
Introduction: Hurricanes and other weather-related disasters are increasing in frequency and virulence as a result of climate change. While post-disaster mental health outcomes are robustly studied, post-disaster physical health conditions are not, especially in the longer-term aftermath of disasters. Hypertension is of particular concern due to its links with stress and traumatic events. To address this gap in the literature, this study examined the association between cumulative disaster exposure and hypertension over several years. Methods: Data were from the Resilience in Survivors of Katrina (Project), a longitudinal cohort study of primarily Black mothers. A total of 505 women who had not …

From Host To Home: Reflections On Institutional Readiness, Denisse Solis, Carrie L. Forbes, Jack M. Maness
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
The creation of library residency programs, intended to diversify the library profession, has increased significantly over the last two years; for example, institutional membership in the ACRL Diversity Alliance grew from 36 to 53 from 20171 to 2019.2 As Dr. Alston notes in his research, “Diversity residency programs have become a popular way for academic libraries to demonstrate a commitment to diversity initiatives and to recruit and retain practitioners of color.”3 However, many host institutions and librarians rarely make significant efforts to deconstruct whiteness within themselves and at the organizational level.
This chapter is a reflective case study of the …
