What Is Wrong With Monetary Sanctions? Directions For Policy, Practice, And Research, Brittany Friedman, Alexes Harris, Beth Huebner, Karin Martin, Becky Pettit, Sarah Shannon, Bryan Sykes

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Works

Monetary sanctions are an integral and increasingly debated feature of the American criminal legal system. Emerging research, including that featured in this volume, offers important insight into the law governing monetary sanctions, how they are levied, and how their imposition affects inequality. Monetary sanctions are assessed for a wide range of contacts with the criminal legal system ranging from felony convictions to alleged traffic violations with important variability in law and practice across states. These differences allow for the identification of features of law, policy, and practice that differentially shape access to justice and equality before the law. Common practices …

Private Probation Costs, Compliance, And The Proportionality Of Punishment: Evidence From Georgia And Missouri, Beth Huebner, Sarah Shannon

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Works

Probation is the most commonly imposed correctional sanction, is often accompanied by supplementary costs, and can be operated by the state or private companies. Private probation is a unique sanction used in lower courts, most often for misdemeanor offenses, and is managed by third-party actors. We focus on documenting the process and unique costs of private probation, including the rituals of compliance and proportionality of punishment. We use data from interviews with individuals on private probation and local criminal justice officials as well as evidence from court ethnographies in Georgia and Missouri. For individuals on private probation, payment of monetary …

Cooperativism In Cultural And Tech Sectors: Promises And Challenges, Greig De Peuter, Bianca C. Dreyer, Marisol Sandoval, Aleksandra Szaflarska

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This article reports on a survey of co-operatives in the cultural and technology sectors in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Creative industries are a growth area for new cooperativism, with more than a quarter of surveyed co-operatives in operation for less than five years. While the findings show that co-operation is a promising strategy for countering individualised experiences of work, for democratising workplaces, and for facilitating satisfying work in creative industries, they also reveal significant challenges which individual co-operatives and the wider co-operative movement must confront for cooperativism to have a sustainable and inclusive future in the …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Task success in co-located and distributed collaborative work settings is characterized by clear and efficient communication between participating members. Communication issues like 1) Unwanted interruptions and 2) Delayed feedback in collaborative work based distributed scenarios have the potential to impede task coordination and significantly decrease the probability of accomplishing task objective. Research shows that 1) Interrupting tasks at random moments can cause users to take up to 30% longer to resume tasks, commit up to twice the errors, and experience up to twice the negative effect than when interrupted at boundaries 2) Skill retention in collaborative learning tasks improves with …

Faith News Through Radio And Digital Media: An Exploratory Study Of Expats Seeking Islamic Information In Dubai, Uae, Urwa Mohammed Tariq

CoHSS Faculty Work

When non-Muslims become immersed in an Islamic way of life—a common occurrence in the UAE, a Muslim country where the majority of the resident population is foreign born—some become interested in learning more about the Islamic faith. This interest is also evident among new converts to Islam from other countries when they reside in the UAE. Little is known about how information about Islam is disseminated to non-Muslims and new Muslims in the UAE, how these expatriates search for the religious information they desire, and the challenges they encounter in their inquiries. This study applies the theory of diffusion of …

Stratified Entry Into Illegality: How Immigration Policy Shapes Being Undocumented, Sofya Aptekar, Amy Hsin Jan 2022

Stratified Entry Into Illegality: How Immigration Policy Shapes Being Undocumented, Sofya Aptekar, Amy Hsin

Publications and Research

Research shows that legal status is a critical axis of stratification in the United States but is less clear about the variably permeable boundaries around illegality and the systematic ways in which migrants are channeled into and out of the liminal states of illegality. Drawing on analysis of 105 interviews with a diverse group of undocumented or formerly undocumented immigrant young adults in New York City collected in 2018-19, we introduce the concept of stratified entry into illegality to illustrate how migrants’ nationality, race, and socioeconomic status shape their mode of entry which, in turn, shapes opportunities to adjust legal …

A Circular Pedagogy For Higher Education, Lucia Morales, Jon-Hans Coetzer, Nadia Barkoczi, Lia Pop, Claudia Marian, Patrick Flynn

Working Papers

Over the last two decades, higher education has been subject to significant scrutiny due to increasing pressures to provide a meaningful and relevant learning experience to the student population, and by their strong connection to the functioning of the economic and political systems. By reflecting on the controversies surrounding pedagogy, this paper contributes to the current debate by exploring pedagogy as a circular process where learners grow and develop by taking different roles and identities as they navigate a research-informed learning continuum defined by growing levels of complexity and uncertainty. This study introduces a new pedagogical paradigm for adult education, …

Care Ethics And Paternalism: A Beauvoirian Approach, Deniz Durmus Jan 2022

Care Ethics And Paternalism: A Beauvoirian Approach, Deniz Durmus

2022 Faculty Bibliography

Feminist care ethics has become a prominent ethical theory that influenced theoretical and practical discussions in a variety of disciplines and institutions on a global scale. However, it has been criticized by transnational feminist scholars for operating with Western-centric assumptions and registers, especially by universalizing care as it is practiced in the Global North. It has also been criticized for prioritizing gender over other categories of intersectionality and hence for not being truly intersectional. Given the imperialist and colonial legacies embedded into the unequal distribution of care work across the globe, a Western-centric approach may also carry the danger of …

Justice By Geography: The Role Of Monetary Sanctions Across Communities, Gabriela Kirk, Kristina Thompson, Beth Huebner, Christopher Uggen, Sarah Shannon Jan 2022

Justice By Geography: The Role Of Monetary Sanctions Across Communities, Gabriela Kirk, Kristina Thompson, Beth Huebner, Christopher Uggen, Sarah Shannon

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Works

Monetary sanctions are a ubiquitous part of court systems. Previous studies have focused largely on these sanctions at the state level or solely on large urban jurisdictions. However, court systems differ considerably across communities of varying population size, composition, and density. This article examines how differences in court structure and organizational dynamics in communities across the rural-urban continuum lead to differences in how court actors consider the role of monetary sanctions. Using interviews with court actors and ethnographic observations in communities across four states, we find that the practical and symbolic nature of monetary sanctions varied by the acquaintanceship density …

Models For Living: Critiques Of Midcentury Suburban Design, With A View From Lower Bucks County, Pa, Christopher J. Palladino

Theses and Dissertations

After World War II, millions of American servicemen returned home, anxious to put the war behind them, settle down, and begin a family. This resulted in an unprecedented spike in demand for housing, intensified by the low-interest loans granted by the G.I. Bill. Combined with an aggressive advertising campaign, longer term mortgages and an attractive and novel building plan made Levittown, PA an immediate success. Concurrently, geographical sectors of the United States witnessed an historical change in the manner in which homes were designed and constructed. Innovations such as mass production, the efficiency system, and the assembly line were expansively …

Constructivist Grounded Theory Approach To Understanding Teaching Kindergarteners How To Read During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mary Carney Hagan Jan 2022

Constructivist Grounded Theory Approach To Understanding Teaching Kindergarteners How To Read During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mary Carney Hagan

Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a variety of problems around the world, including isolation, school closure, contact restriction, and economic shutdown; these problems have completely changed the psychosocial environment and physical well-being of children everywhere (Fegert et al., 2020). Education underwent tremendous changes almost overnight: As a result of the pandemic, students were forced to embrace virtual learning to finish the 2019–2020 academic year and begin the 2020–2021 academic year. This change caused anxiety and trauma to adults and young children. DC Public Schools (2020) described the experience of virtual learning as a “shared traumatic experience” (p. 1). Virtual learning …

The Impact Of Language Interactions With Guest Speakers On Secondary Students’ Reading Skills And Reading Maturity, Kristen M.F. Morgan Jan 2022

The Impact Of Language Interactions With Guest Speakers On Secondary Students’ Reading Skills And Reading Maturity, Kristen M.F. Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

As students age, their rates of aliteracy, a type of reading resistance where an individual can read but chooses not to, increase. Secondary schools are tasked with supporting aliterate students’ development into mature readers who not only possess adequate reading skills but also the reading interests and attitudes that enable them to thoughtfully participate in citizenship. Through a nonequivalent control group design, this study investigated the impact of language interactions with guest speakers on high school seniors’ reading skills and reading maturity. The reading skills and reading maturity of a treatment group and a control group were measured using the …

John Steinbeck, Herman Melville, And Ann Petry: Child Laborers Enact Humanitarianism, Linda Michelle Ciritovic

Theses and Dissertations

John Steinbeck, Herman Melville, and Ann Petry explicate the dignity and responsibility of child laborers in American society. Steinbeck, Melville, and Petry present in their literature child laborers who enact humanitarianism. Child laborers are humanitarians due to the work they have produced for and contributed to American society’s economic success, especially while working and not receiving necessary laws to protect their wellbeing. The authors differ, though, in their literary works regarding how the child laborer’s viewpoint receives response from an adult. Steinbeck honors the child laborer by writing of the child laborer whose voice encompasses grand immersion with life. Steinbeck …

The World's Most Powerful International Court? The Centrual American Court Of Justice And The Quest For De Facto Authority (1907-2020), Salvatore Caserta, Mikael Rask Madsen Jan 2022

The World's Most Powerful International Court? The Centrual American Court Of Justice And The Quest For De Facto Authority (1907-2020), Salvatore Caserta, Mikael Rask Madsen

American University International Law Review

The original Central American Court of Justice (CACJ) is often referenced as the world’s first international court (IC). Functioning from 1907 to 1918, and commonly known as the Cartago Court, this court was the first-ever IC and a precursor to the Permanent Court of Justice, or “World Court”, established in 1922 in The Hague. The CACJ does, however, hold another record. The current incarnation of the court – established in 1994, in Managua, Nicaragua as the judicial arm of the Central American System of Economic Integration (Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA) – which is the world’s most powerful international …

The Efficacy Of Us-Mexico Border Enforcement In Relation To Crime Prevention, Samuel Klopstock

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The Trump Administration brought substantive changes to United States immigration policies, and labeled undocumented immigrants as predisposed towards criminal behavior. This paper presents a brief historical perspective of three major waves of Mexican immigration to the United States: The Early 1900s – Before World War I, Post-World War I – World War II, End of Bracero Accord – Present, and considers the relationship between immigrants and crime. The author explores contemporary immigration enforcement, both conservative and liberal attitudes towards immigrants, and their effects on policy. Consequences of border enforcement policies and the efficacy of border enforcement in preventing crime are …

No. 55: Food Clusters, Food Security And The Urban Food System Of Northern Namibia, Lawrence Kazembe, Jonathan Crush, Ndeyapo Nickanor

Hungry Cities Partnership

A central feature of the transformation of urban food systems in cities of the Global South is the growing presence of supermarkets and their supply chains, often termed supermarketization or a supermarket revolution. A key issue in the African context is whether supermarkets are a threat to other sources of food including informal sector vendors. Most research on the supermarket revolution and competition with other food retailers focuses on large urban conurbations with little attention paid to the role of supermarkets in secondary urban centres. This paper aims to rectify this situation through a case study of the role of …

No. 85: Pandemic Food Precarity, Crisis-Living And Translocality: Zimbabwean Migrant Households In South Africa During Covid-19, Sujata Ramachandran, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango

Southern African Migration Programme

COVID-19 has been a great disrupter of international migration and a social and economic disaster for migrants. The findings in this report come from a household survey conducted by SAMP in mid-2021 in the South African cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg. The report argues that years of crisis-living in a hyperinflationary environment in Zimbabwe left many households in a pre-pandemic state of food insecurity and vulnerable to the pandemic shock. At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis reduced the ability of Zimbabwean migrant households in South Africa to assist family back in Zimbabwe. As well as contributing to greater …
