Pigs And Capital, Lawson Bridges Jan 2022

Pigs And Capital, Lawson Bridges

Race, Gender, and Sexuality Symposium

As public support for Black Lives Matter grew in the spring and summer of 2020, the public outcries for justice for the victims of police brutality led many to look into the history of policing. This research into how policing developed from the colonial city guards and slave patrols into the militarized police force of today has revealed how the institution of policing was made for the protection of capital.

Excuse Me, Sarah Burse Jan 2022

Excuse Me, Sarah Burse

Race, Gender, and Sexuality Symposium

The purpose of this poem was to bring awareness that racism isn’t in the past. The popular stereotype that “black people are aggressive,” influences the ways in which the United States has treated the Black community. They try to communicate their needs and concerns in a calm and well-mannered tone, leaving them with the same problems. Before they speak, they are labeled as “a danger to society,” and excessive force is used. When they tried to stand up for themselves, they ended up in jail, dead, or in the hospital. Burse also wanted to make are of the “School-to-Prison Pipeline.” …

Domestic Morality, “Traditional Dogma”, And Christianity In A Rural Zambian Community, Bernhard Udelhoven Jan 2022

Domestic Morality, “Traditional Dogma”, And Christianity In A Rural Zambian Community, Bernhard Udelhoven

Zambia Social Science Journal

Hugo Hinfelaar described, for precolonial times, a comprehensive domestic religion and family spirituality which he called “traditional dogma” or “family dogma”. What is left of it in Zambia? When and for what purposes are traditional religious beliefs invoked today and scrutinised in marriage and the domestic sphere? While many say, “We have no culture left!” traditional dogma continues to function as a “moral grammar” that anchors cultural identity. The marital life of a couple becomes scrutinised along traditional beliefs during family crises. When people accept this scrutiny, they (re-)submit themselves under the wider family and thereby reconstitute the family under …

Spillover Effects Of Quota Or Parity Laws: The Case Of Ecuador Women Mayors, Marcos Fabricio Perez, Santiago Basabe-Serrano Jan 2022

Spillover Effects Of Quota Or Parity Laws: The Case Of Ecuador Women Mayors, Marcos Fabricio Perez, Santiago Basabe-Serrano

Political Science Faculty Publications

Do quota or parity laws designed to improve the representation of women in plurinominal elections have a spillover effect to uninominal elections? We empirically test this theory by analyzing the effects of quota and parity legislations implemented in Ecuador for plurinominal elections on the proportion of women elected as mayors. Through an unpublished database, our results show that after the implementation of such legislation, the probability of a woman being elected as mayor almost doubles (ceteris paribus). We also find evidence that a possible causal chain for the documented spillover effects is the increasing importance of female role models, motivated …

Co-Operatives, Work, And The Digital Economy: A Knowledge Synthesis Report, Greig De Peuter, Gemma De Verteuil, Salome Machaka

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This report surveys recent literature on co-operative approaches to improving work and livelihoods in the digital economy, specifically in the gig economy, the tech sector, and digital creative industries. It introduces concepts that update co-operative theory and practice for the digital age, including platform cooperativism, open cooperativism, distributed co-operative organizations, and Exit to Community. It outlines how the co-operative model has been adopted by and for self-employed workers, platform workers, technologists and communication professionals, and data subjects. While the report presents evidence of co-ops’ potential to improve working conditions and mitigate power asymmetries in the digital economy, it also addresses …

Fictional Crime-Based Dramas And The Relationship Between Violence And Mental Illness, Katharine R. Carrión Jan 2022

Fictional Crime-Based Dramas And The Relationship Between Violence And Mental Illness, Katharine R. Carrión

Psychology Honors Papers

Since its beginnings in the late 1940s, the crime-based media genre has continuously maintained its status as an entertainment favorite, and portrayals of violence and crime in the media have led to an increasingly strong, close relationship between viewers and this type of media. A problem that goes widely undiscussed about this genre is that the perpetrators of these violent crimes are often portrayed as suffering from some mental illness. The goal of this study was to understand how fictional crime-based television dramas impact general public understanding of the relationship between violence and mental illness, while also examining the best …

Cost Of Menstrual Hygiene Practices In Gujarat, India, Smruti Bulsari, Kiran Pandya, Jayesh Desai

International Review of Business and Economics

Menstrual cycles are an integral part of a nearly two-third of a woman’s life, and occur every month. Menstruation is a public health concern because irrespective of whether a woman can afford hygienic absorbents or not, she undergoes menstruation phase every month. Therefore, menstruation requires to be examined from public health policy perspective. Choice of menstrual products is not only subject to budget constraint but also to “other regarding preferences”, as can be explained by behavioural economics theories. How Attitude Affects Grieving And Maturation In The Road And The Catcher In The Rye, Mackenzie Clevenger Jan 2022

How Attitude Affects Grieving And Maturation In The Road And The Catcher In The Rye, Mackenzie Clevenger

Hare & Bell Writing Contest

Varied grieving processes can be observed in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. The Road, a 2006 post-apocalyptic novel that follows a man and a boy as they try to survive in a world overrun by death and danger, exhibits the boy’s path to maturation in the wake of his mother’s death. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist from the 1951 classic The Catcher in the Rye, on the other hand, exhibits a far more violent and pessimistic coping process as he contemplates the death of his little brother during an extended stroll …

Increasing Healthcare Provider Engagement With Adult Patients Regarding Organ Donation In The Primary Healthcare Setting, Evelyn Michelle Rainey Jan 2022

Increasing Healthcare Provider Engagement With Adult Patients Regarding Organ Donation In The Primary Healthcare Setting, Evelyn Michelle Rainey

DNP Projects

Though 90% of the United States population supports organ donation, only 60% actually sign up as registered donors (Health Resources & Services Administration [HRSA], 2021). This 60% makes up approximately 169 million Americans, but the chances of actually becoming an organ donor are only 3 in 1,000 (Health Resources & Services Administration [HRSA], 2021). Simply put, the need for organs far outweighs the availability of those organs for transplant. Literature reviewed supports that a lack of knowledge regarding organ donation may contribute to the decreased number of registered organ donors and that Primary Care Providers (PCP) have been successful at …

Sexism In High Level Sports Organizations, Wilma Jalisa Davis Jan 2022

Sexism In High Level Sports Organizations, Wilma Jalisa Davis

Women’s Leadership

Title IX was implemented in 1972 to counter discrimination against women. This included women throughout various levels and systems including athletics. Title IX states that in order to receive federal funding assistance, programs and organizations must ban sex discrimination in order to do so. While Title IX has progressed participation rates of girls and women in sports, it has done little to increase and elevate women in leadership positions. Despite an unprecedented amount of women participating in college sports, women are not provided the same opportunities to chase positions in sports administration or coaching (Lanser, 2017). There have been almost …

The Scope Of Inductive Risk, P.D. Magnus Jan 2022

The Scope Of Inductive Risk, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

The Argument from Inductive Risk (AIR) is taken to show that values are inevitably involved in making judgements or forming beliefs. After reviewing this conclusion, I pose cases which are prima facie counterexamples: the unreflective application of conventions, use of black-boxed instruments, reliance on opaque algorithms, and unskilled observation reports. These cases are counterexamples to the AIR posed in ethical terms as a matter of personal values. Nevertheless, it need not be understood in those terms. The values which load a theory choice may be those of institutions or past actors. This means that the challenge of responsibly handling inductive …

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Scholarship

In response to the May 3rd, 2022 leaked draft majority opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court on Roe v. Wade, the Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at the University at Albany, State University of New York, affirms the right for women and all people with the capacity to become pregnant to have access to safe and legal abortions. We acknowledge that this is a basic right, which is part of the full reproductive freedoms under the rubric of “reproductive justice,” defined by the women-of-color-led SisterSong Collective as “the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, …

Locating The Embodied Sense Of Self And Examining Its Relationship With Psychological Well-Being, Adam Hanley, Natalie Lecy, Robert Hanley Jan 2022

Locating The Embodied Sense Of Self And Examining Its Relationship With Psychological Well-Being, Adam Hanley, Natalie Lecy, Robert Hanley

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Westerners tend to localize their sense of self in the head, and, to a lesser degree, in the chest. However, single-point, localization studies of the self omit direct exploration of the size and shape of the embodied self. This study explored a) beliefs about the location and spatial distribution of the embodied sense of self, and b) whether individual differences in how the embodied self was represented were associated with psychological and subjective well-being. Results from a sample of 206 American adults confirm extant reports, indicating that the embodied sense of self is most often located in the head and …

Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age. V. Socio-Cultural Bases Of A Globalizing Neo-Shamanism And Its Relation To Climate Crisis: Possibilities, Inevitabilities, Barriers, Harry T. Hunt

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Extending this series of papers on a futural spirituality, and considering the numinous as an inherent human capacity for an awe that confers a sense of all-inclusive meaning, communality, and humility, the question arises whether, in the face of a secularization of traditional world religions, globalization of a techno/capitalist economy of perpetual commodification of planet and person, and a widening sense of loss of meaning and higher purpose, some collective re-newal of the sense of the sacred might be possible – or not. While Jung, Toynbee, and Sorokin regarded such a movement as inevitable, bringing forward to the degree possible …

Exceptional Human Experiences Among Pilgrims On The Camino De Santiago: A Study Of Self-Reported Experiences And Transformative Aftereffects, Miran Lavric, Snezana Brumec, Andrej Naterer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is an extraordinary endeavour that tends to trigger exceptional human experiences. Following our previous investigation of this topic, we conducted an online survey of 501 pilgrims in order to assess the frequency of different exceptional experiences (EEs) on the pilgrimage and their transformative aftereffects (TAs) in everyday life afterwards. More than 70% of the respondents reported improvement in terms of self-confidence, personal relationships and letting go of emotional “baggage”. The results show strong correlations between the observed EEs and the (consequent) TAs. We contend that walking the Camino de Santiago often produces exceptional experiences that …

Emotion And Judgment In Young Women Of A Society In Transition, Maura A. E. Pilotti, Khadija El Alaoui

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

The present study asked whether emotional responses to narratives of moral transgressions are shaped by the reader’s assumed relationship with the injured party (i.e., oneself, familiar other, and unfamiliar other). Its goal was to test a cultural, religious, and individualistic account of such responses in young females of a traditional society in transition towards a sustainable integration into the global economy. To this end, female college students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were asked to identify their emotional reaction to each of several moral transgressions, report its intensity and then judge the severity of the transgression. In agreement with …

Placement Instability, Perceived Social Support, And Internalizing Symptoms In Youth In The Child Welfare System, Michelle Cusumano Jan 2022

Placement Instability, Perceived Social Support, And Internalizing Symptoms In Youth In The Child Welfare System, Michelle Cusumano

Theses and Dissertations

High rates of youth in the child welfare system (CWS) experience placement instability, or frequent moves between household, institution, or placement (Fisher et al., 2013). Placement instability has been shown to predict subsequent internalizing symptoms regardless of the maltreatment type, severity, or frequency experienced by the child in foster care (McGuire et al., 2018). Frequent moves between biological parents, foster or kinship caregivers, or group homes may detrimentally affect youth’s social support networks, which are known to serve as a protective factor for maltreated children and adolescents (Folger & Wright, 2013). The current study aims to examine longitudinally whether perceived …

The Lived Experiences Of Second-Generation Nigerian Male College Graduates On Educational Attainment: A Narrative Research Study, Anthony Seriki

Theses and Dissertations

This narrative research study design was conducted to explore second-generation Nigerian males' perceptions of how family heritage influences college success. The streaming of immigrants from the continent of Africa has led to an influx of foreign-born Backs in schools in the United States. Many second-generation Nigerian youths in schools nationwide are from immigrant backgrounds, partly because of the streaming of immigration from the continent of Africa. The experiences in education from Black immigrant children from Africa, specifically Nigeria, have been understudied. This study captured the first-hand account of how second-generation Nigerian males navigated the United States educational system and how …

How Traditional Bullying And Cyberbullying Relate To High School Student Attendance And Suicidal Ideation, Thomas Sposato

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the frequency and possible connection between student self-reported bullying victimization, suicidal ideation, and reported fear of attending school. These school and societal problems have potential negative impacts on individuals, families, and school learning communities. Their negative effects may be compounded when occurring together. Previous research has connected bullying behavior to student absenteeism to suicidal ideation. These connections were further explored in this study using the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), which is overseen by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The purpose of this survey is to focus on illness, death, and disability among adolescents, and …

Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined student perceptions of advisement experiences with a primary role advisor in a centralized advising office. The intent was to explore the connection between academic advising and student connectedness to the institution. This study utilized Tinto’s theory of student departure to provide an understanding of how student success can be impacted by institutional relationships, particularly in a community college environment. Tinto asserted that a student’s decision to stay or depart from an institution was largely impacted by interactions and relationships between the student and other members of the institution (Tinto, 1975). This study aimed to explore students’ …

The Role Of Social Skills In Protecting Against The Impact Of Family And Community Violence On Youth Psychopathology, Emily Christine Hockenberry

Theses and Dissertations

Children and adolescents are exposed to family and community violence at high rates, and poly victimization is common. Further study is needed to assess the unique and additive effects of witnessing or directly experiencing violence in multiple contexts on psychopathology in urban youth of color. Additionally, analyzing the role of protective factors, such as social skills, in moderating the relation between violence exposure and psychopathology may aid in identifying unique and shared pathways by which different forms of interpersonal violence may impact mental health outcomes. This study sought to examine whether social skills (cooperation and assertion) moderated the relation between …

Climbing The Broken Ladder: A Narrative Exploration Of How Racially And Economically Minoritized Students Successfully Navigate The College Pathway, Sugeni A. Pérez-Sadler

Theses and Dissertations

Sixty six years after Brown v. Board of Education’s (1954), disparities in educational opportunity and outcomes continue to be a major civil rights issue that threatens the well-being of our society (Chetty et al,., 2018; Farmer-Hinton, 2008a). Despite the often-explored systemic barriers and oppressive forces, many do enroll in college and persist (Harper et al., 2018). This research applied the frameworks of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Model (CCW) to explore the barriers low-income Black and Latinx students face in accessing higher education and examine what these students might have in the way of personal assets …
