Molecular Biomarkers Of Adult Human And Dog Stress During Canine-Assisted Interventions: A Systematic Scoping Review, Jaci Gandenberger, Erin Flynn, Em Moratto, Ashley Wendt, Kevin Morris

Institute for Human-Animal Connection: Faculty Scholarship

Positive relationships, including those between humans and other animals, particularly dogs, may be a way to reduce stress in humans. However, research into this area is relatively new, and a comprehensive review of the impacts of these interactions on humans and dogs has not been conducted. A scoping review of the scientific literature was conducted to explore what is known about the impacts of canine-assisted interventions on molecular biomarkers (e.g., cortisol and oxytocin) and associated measures (e.g., heart rate and blood pressure) of human and canine stress. As reported across 27 identified studies, canine-assisted interventions have consistently been demonstrated to …

Proceedings: 2022 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

In 2000, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki stated that the twenty-first century would be the “Century of Africa.” Indeed I, like many, believe that Africa is a continent full of promise, rich cultural heritage, blessed with a wealth of natural resources, and poised to become a hub of innovation and progress. Recently, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken remarked that Africa is headed toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic regions, and that it will have a hand in shaping in the future of the world. Recent advances have been made in solar power, the “green tech” industry working …

Judicial Depictions Of Responsibility And Risk: The Erasure Of State Accountability In Canadian Sentencing Judgments Involving Indigenous People, Sarah Jane Nussbaum Mar 2022

Judicial Depictions Of Responsibility And Risk: The Erasure Of State Accountability In Canadian Sentencing Judgments Involving Indigenous People, Sarah Jane Nussbaum

PhD Dissertations

This dissertation is set within the context of Canadas mass imprisonment of Indigenous people and centres on a critical evaluation of reported sentencing judgments. In particular, the dissertation examines some of the ways in which sentencing judges both draw attention to, and obscure, state accountability. The dissertation demonstrates that sentencing judges erase the role of the state in the criminalization of Indigenous people and in the construction of Indigenous people as risky. The result is that sentencing judgments rationalize and support the re-entrenchment, rather than the redressing, of the states oppression of Indigenous people. The dissertation is theoretical and descriptive, …

The Norm Life Cycle Theory And The Role Of Insol International In Shaping The Uncitral Model Law On Cross-Border Insolvency, Anthony Ikemefuna Idigbe Mar 2022

The Norm Life Cycle Theory And The Role Of Insol International In Shaping The Uncitral Model Law On Cross-Border Insolvency, Anthony Ikemefuna Idigbe

PhD Dissertations

The involvement of non-state entities in global public norm evolution has been the subject of many studies, especially in international human rights law and policy. This study explains the role of a non-state entity, INSOL International, in shaping the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997 using the life cycle approach developed in the human rights and policy context. The study utilized a triangulation of doctrinal, empirical and legal history data to determine whether the norm life cycle theory could explain the role of INSOL in shaping the Model Law. The study found …

Association Between Diagnosed Anxiety And Depression And Exposure To Life Stressors During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Emily Hallgren Phd, Don E. Willis Phd, Brett Rowland Ma, James P. Selig Phd, Pearl A. Mcelfish Phd

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Research suggests that mental health disorders heighten the risk of exposure to life stressors. Drawing on a sample of 754 adults from a survey distributed at six primary care clinics, we examine whether adults who reported ever being diagnosed with depression or anxiety were more likely to experience an employment disruption, a housing disruption, and/or report more COVID-19-related stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals who reported ever being diagnosed with depression reported a greater burden (B=.75) of COVID-19-related stressors. Those who reported ever being diagnosed with anxiety had higher odds of experiencing an employment disruption (OR=1.90) and a housing disruption …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Social support from family and friends assists breast cancer patients navigate a life crisis, but more needs to be understood about specific social network characteristics that can benefit breast cancer patients. To address this need, the primary aim of this study was to identify social network factors that facilitate or reduce social support. Given racially patterned gaps in social support among breast cancer patients, a secondary goal was to identify network characteristics that are linked to gaps in support. We examined these research questions using data from a sample of 915 breast cancer patients (NHWhite=373; NHBlack=377; Hispanic=165) and 4,021 of …

As part of a project investigating the social, economic, and ethical issues related to the application of biotechnology to food production and to the adoption or rejection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), we conducted a survey using a questionnaire mailed to a randomly selected sample of consumers in five Midwestern states—Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. This report highlights the responses of the 458 respondents to that completed and returned questionnaire.

Agricultural Producers’ Use Of Genetically Modified Organisms, Michael E. Lawson, Donna A. Hess, Satoko Hirai

Great Plains Sociologist

A random sample of agricultural producers from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin is used to examine producers’ decisions to use or not use genetically modified organisms. Using the rational choice theoretical framework to guide analyses, the associations between proportion of genetically modified corn acres grown by agricultural producers and perceived cost, perceived risk, and perceived benefit. Results indicated that 1) perceived cost was significantly, negatively associated with proportion of GM corn acres planted; 2) perceived risk was significantly, negatively associated with proportion of GM corn acres planted; and 3) perceived benefit was significantly, positively associated with proportion …
