Peru has shifted away from centralized mining management to governance among government, companies, and communities. Various mechanisms facilitate community participation, including the mining canon, dialogues, and corporate social responsibility programs. Even with these laws and mechanisms, mining pollution and conflicts continue. In this study, we ask: how do communities perceive and participate in mining governance? And what are some alternative ways, driven by community priorities, to address governance in mining contexts? We collected 53 semi-structured with agricultural actors in two Peruvian districts with mining activity and analyzed those perspectives through the lens of community-centered governance. Our analyses revealed how centering …

The prevalence rates of trypanosomes, including those that require cyclical transmission by tsetse flies, are widely distributed in Africa. Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense are actively maintained in regions where there are no tsetse flies although at low frequencies. Whether this could be due to an independent evolutionary origin or multiple introduction of trypanosomes due to continuous movement of livestock between tsetse-free and -infested areas is not known. Thus, the aim of the study was to carry out microsatellite genotyping to explore intra-specific genetic diversity between T. (Trypanozoon), T. congolense and Trypanosoma vivax from the two regions: tsetse infested and …

Engineering education requires learning strategies to engage students and improve the development of disciplinary and transversal competencies. Additionally, as economic resources are generally limited, it is sought to avoid investing large sums of money in software and hardware, as well as in fitting out laboratories. This work presents a didactic proposal within the framework of active and collaborative learning that includes the flipped classroom technique to be applied in the curriculum of undergraduate engineering programs and inside a massive flexible digital master class. The activity is the mathematical modeling, simulation, and control system of a direct current motor where simulation …
Eating Real Mexican: Identity, Authenticity, Americanization, Health, And Food Culture In The United States After 1900, Alexandra H. Ibarra
Eating Real Mexican: Identity, Authenticity, Americanization, Health, And Food Culture In The United States After 1900, Alexandra H. Ibarra
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the connection between Mexican food and identity in the early to mid-twentieth century (1900-1950). Anglo-Americans created evolving racial/ethnic stereotypes during a period of intense Mexican immigration and nativism that used descriptions of food, hygiene habits, and health to reinforce boundaries of whiteness and citizenship.
By examining Americanization teaching manuals, food articles, as well as personal and corporate cookbooks, I seek to understand how Americanizers and other food writers used food to point to emphasize, unhygienic habits, excess use of spice and grease, as well as the "questionable" nature of immigrate food culture to separate them from Anglo-Americans. …

Material/Methods: Two research stages involved a total of 373 professional athletes. Based on the collected data, the internal structure and psychometric properties of the instrument were established. Results: As a result of the conducted statistical analyses, a questionnaire was obtained. Analyses confirmed the stability of the internal structure of the questionnaire. The instrument also obtained satisfactory coefficients of reliability (using Cronbach’s alpha internal reliability coefficient) and construct validity. In order to establish the convergent …
The Method Of Critical Phenomenology: Simone De Beauvoir As A Phenomenologist., Johanna K. Oksala
The Method Of Critical Phenomenology: Simone De Beauvoir As A Phenomenologist., Johanna K. Oksala
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The paper aims to contribute to the ongoing conversation on critical phenomenology with reflections on its method. The key argument is that critical phenomenology should be understood as a form of historico-transcendental inquiry and therefore it cannot forgo the phenomenological reduction. Rather, this methodological step should be centered in critical phenomenology, and appropriated in problematized and rethought forms. The methodological assessment of critical phenomenology has implications also for how we read its canon. The paper shows that while Simone de Beauvoir did not adopt the phenomenological reduction in its full Husserlian meaning, her analyses of experience did not remain on …
Conjugal Relation: The Shakers'question For Frontier Kentucky, Peter Hawes
Conjugal Relation: The Shakers'question For Frontier Kentucky, Peter Hawes
James W. Jackson Award for Excellence in Library Research in the Social Sciences
At its heart, this is a case fraught with pain and loss that is not unique to this particular period in frontier Kentucky. Although the presence of the Shakers, and a community’s reaction to them, imbue this case with meaning historically, this divorce also speaks to unchanging questions about the nature of conjugal relation in the face of an uncertain eternity. This is a case that reveals something about broader anti-Shakerism, but it also demonstrates that for many, the broader contexts of religious change and budding institutions were not perceptible factors in their experience of life on the frontier. With …

Changes In The Group’S Social Structure In Mountain Tourism, Gheorghe Lucaciu, Marius Alin Marinau, Mirela Stef, Paul Florian Dragos
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Mountain tourism implies specific aspects in contrast to other components of physical education and sport, by the vast scope and accessibility regardless of physical condition, age and skills or similarities with everyday life activities. We hypothesized that the joint activities, cooperation, interaction and direct communication with the natural and social environment will result in a better understanding of oneself and partners, placing the group structure on real bases, prompting avoidance of possible malfunctions in the subsequent group activity. Material/Methods: Subjects of this sociological research were 48 first-year students, participating in “Mountain tourism and sport orientation” (26 males and 22 …

Motivations For Undertaking Physical Activity By First-Year Students Of Faculty Of Physical Education In 2000 And 2010, Alicja Nowak-Zaleska, Ryszard Zaleski, Barbara Wilk, Anna Walentukiewicz
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: During the last several years, diametrical difference in attitude to physical activity in youth has been noticed. Engagement in any form of physical activity always goes together with motivation for its undertaking, most often connected with realization of personal expectations. Its sources are perceived, among others, in interior factors, such as: joy resulting from participation in physical activity itself, personal achievements, and pleasure of finding release in movement or social contacts, e.g. spending time with friends. The present paper attempts to assess the motivation for additional physical activity undertaken by first-year students of the Faculty of Physical Education at …

Reshaping Space: Informal Arts Engagement As Social Practice, Ying Chen
Reshaping Space: Informal Arts Engagement As Social Practice, Ying Chen
Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations
This study shows that in times of crisis and rapid changes of the social environment, ordinary people, by creating informal public art discover their capacity to maintain social relations through creating new social spaces for new modes of social interactions in their communities and beyond. By adopting an expanded definition of public art, this study specifically focuses on collective informal creative activity outside the institutional art sites. Based on Henri Lefebvre’s space theory and Jacques Ranciere’s aesthetic theory, this paper offers a theoretical framework for understanding people’s need and ability to co-create shared informal art spaces in everyday life; to …
Democratic Isolation, Thin Citizenship, And Insurrection: A Theory, Kevin G. Lorentz Ii, Kimberly Saks Mcmanaway
Democratic Isolation, Thin Citizenship, And Insurrection: A Theory, Kevin G. Lorentz Ii, Kimberly Saks Mcmanaway
eJournal of Public Affairs
Citizens are deeply cynical of the actual institutions and exercising of representative democracy, resulting in increased isolation and extremism rather than nuanced public debate and democratic involvement. Three interrelated background conditions led to this inevitable point: the erasure of political citizenship by neoliberalism, the ability of technology (especially social media) to provide perfect filtering, and the resulting fragmenting of civic experience. In this paper we outline a theory of democratic isolation that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, exploited by populist politicians, and ultimately led to the January 6 insurrection.
Performing Toxic Masculinity During The January 6 Insurrection, Karen M. Kedrowski
Performing Toxic Masculinity During The January 6 Insurrection, Karen M. Kedrowski
eJournal of Public Affairs
This essay examines the events of the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol through the theoretical lens of toxic masculinity. While toxic masculinity is not the sole cause of the attack on the Capitol, it does explain many of the events of the day, including the large percentage of men in the mob, their militaristic dress and demeanor, and the targeting of Constitutional officers. Moreover, the essay argues that the concepts of democracy, liberty and the peaceful transfer of power are gendered female, which further explains the violence fueled by the myths behind toxic masculinity.

The Temple Of Liberty As Fort Knox: The Securitization Of Democratic Space In The U.S. Capitol, Alisa J. Rosenthal, Lauren C. Bell
eJournal of Public Affairs
In response to security threats in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the U.S. Capitol was made less accessible to the public through a series of security upgrades, including an expansion of the Capitol Police force, new visitor registration programs, and the construction and implementation of physical barriers in and around the Capitol building itself. However, increased safety for members and staff has had consequences for the important symbolic representation that the Capitol building itself provides. As Parkinson (2009, 10) notes: “Capital cities are, by design, by usage or both, symbols of national institutions, values, myths, and norms – they …
Framing An Insurrection: A Typology Of Responses By Evangelical Leaders, Andrea C. Hatcher
Framing An Insurrection: A Typology Of Responses By Evangelical Leaders, Andrea C. Hatcher
eJournal of Public Affairs
As the January 6 insurrection unfolded, religious leaders who had supported Donald Trump were set on a behavioral process of response or silence. Some religious leaders offered statements that largely condemned the violence, others promoted conspiracy theories about the actors involved, and still others offered a defensive response. This study compiles Twitter data of religious leaders from January 1 through the six-month anniversary on July 6, 2021, and finds that their responses form a typology from the conciliatory to the antagonistic. This typology is a useful framework to assess their immediate and changing responses in the contestation of January 6. …

Promoting Critical Reasoning: Civic Engagement In An Era Of Divisive Politics And Civil Unrest, Kevin R. Meyer, Nathan J. Carpenter, Stephen K. Hunt
eJournal of Public Affairs
In this article, we advocate that civic engagement education must focus on antiracism, anti-extremism, and digital literacy in the wake of the attack on the Capitol in January. This critical turn is necessary to stability democracy, restore trust in institutions, and address the problems presented by the post-truth era.

The Commonwealth Takes An Important Step In Protecting Our Democracy, Ashish Vaidya
eJournal of Public Affairs
Northern Kentucky University’s President Ashish Vaidya wrote an article celebrating Kentucky’s new bipartisan voting rights bill. Signed into law in April, the legislation is contrary to what we are seeing in other states and expands voting options in Kentucky. As an immigrant to the U.S. from India, President Vaidya has a unique perspective on democracy in America, and he is very passionate about higher education’s role to inform its students on their responsibility.
Gender Inequalities In Polish And International Sports Organisations, Zbigniew Dziubinski, Natalia Organista
Gender Inequalities In Polish And International Sports Organisations, Zbigniew Dziubinski, Natalia Organista
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The aim of this article is to check whether gender inequalities occur in Polish sports organisations and what the scale of those inequalities is in comparison to international organisations. Other aims relate to verification whether there exists a policy to align these inequalities: provisions prohibiting discrimination due to gender, rules and regulations providing women with a specified number of seats in the crucial positions of the organisation and activity of women’s sports committees. Material/Methods: The study used methods characteristic of sociology, especially methods of examining official documents: on the one hand, information generated by other empirical data from official …
Postcolonialism And The Missionary Experience In The Book Of Mormon, Diana Witt
Postcolonialism And The Missionary Experience In The Book Of Mormon, Diana Witt
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
In their irreverent 2011 musical, The Book of Mormon, writer-composers Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and Robert Lopez satirize the work of Mormon missionaries. This paper analyzes the musical's book and lyrics, its cultural context and reception, and postcolonial scholarship. The paper argues that while The Book of Mormon operates as a postcolonialist text by critiquing cultural hegemony, it also reinforces stereotypes and practices present in colonization like othering and cultural colonialism.

Abstract
The Family and Medical Leave, FMLA, was enacted into Federal law in 1993 under the Bill Clinton Administration to enable employees to take unpaid time off to tend to a medical or familial event that makes attendance at work impossible. Specifically, FMLA was created to
“to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families, to promote the stability, economic security of families, and promote national interests in preserving …
Modeled Wellness: How Perceived Supervisor Wellness Explains Supervisee Personal Wellness, Kevin A. Doyle, Laura Welfare
Modeled Wellness: How Perceived Supervisor Wellness Explains Supervisee Personal Wellness, Kevin A. Doyle, Laura Welfare
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
In this quantitative investigation of 105 counselors-in-training, we analyzed how their perceptions of supervisor wellness are related to their own levels of wellness. The supervisee’s perception of their site supervisor’s level of wellness did explain the personal wellness of the counselor-in-training and the strength of the supervisory relationship acted as a suppressor variable in the expanded regression model. Implications for counselor educators and supervisors include the importance of adopting positive wellness attitudes and behaviors. Counselors-in-training appear to notice, for good and for bad, their supervisors’ levels of wellness. Adopting positive wellness attitudes and behaviors allows supervisors to model positive approaches.

Race Matters: Managing Racial Tension When Teaching Multicultural Competence, Tiffany P. Brooks, Korinne H. Babel
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
In this article, the authors suggest using the Mindful Inquiry (Lee, 2009, 2014) to navigate cultural conversations in the counselor education classroom in tandem with the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts et al., 2015). The authors highlight the literature about racial tension in and outside the classroom, multicultural counseling and social justice, mindfulness and multiculturalism, and teaching multicultural competence. This article concludes with a case example highlighting how to use the Mindful Inquiry (Lee, 2009, 2014) in the classroom while demonstrating how counselors-in-training develop across the MSJCC (Ratts et al., 2015).
