Imposter Participants: Overcoming Methodological Challenges Related To Balancing Participant Privacy With Data Quality When Using Online Recruitment And Data Collection, Jacqueline M. Roehl Ph.D., Darci J. Harland Ph.D. Nov 2022

Imposter Participants: Overcoming Methodological Challenges Related To Balancing Participant Privacy With Data Quality When Using Online Recruitment And Data Collection, Jacqueline M. Roehl Ph.D., Darci J. Harland Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we describe the lessons learned when untrustworthy participants were included in a qualitative interview study. In online research, participants can more easily misrepresent their identity and volunteer for studies even if they do not meet inclusion criteria. The term “imposter participant” refers to dishonest participants who completely fake their identities or simply exaggerate their experiences to participate in qualitative studies. Untrustworthy participants are a threat to data quality, yet little has been published on how qualitative researchers should prevent and handle this unique methodological challenge. In this paper, we provide a detailed account of how specific issues …

Covid-19 Pandemic And Special Education Teacher Voices, Rama Cousik Nov 2022

Covid-19 Pandemic And Special Education Teacher Voices, Rama Cousik

The Qualitative Report

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 created havoc in schools across the world as it necessitated school closures and lockdowns, and/or a sudden switch to an online mode of learning. Although all children and teachers were adversely affected, children with disabilities faced additional problems. Special education teachers bore the burden of having to continue providing high quality special education in the face of these challenges. In this paper, I present findings from a survey of special education teachers through use of qualitative and arts-based research technics.

Contextual Coding In Qualitative Research Involving Participants With Diverse Sociocultural Backgrounds, Ahtisham Younas, Angela Cuoco, Ercole Vellone, Sergi Fàbregues, Elsa Lucia Escalante Barrios, Angela Durante

The Qualitative Report

Understanding participants’ perspectives in qualitative research is contingent on unravelling the essential meaning of their speech. When data are collected in native language and translated into English language, the underlying sociocultural meaning of participants’ speech can be missed. This paper discusses a new contextual coding approach and illustrates its application in research. The technique was used in a phenomenological study in Pakistan and a mixed methods study in Europe. Contextual coding entails a preliminary coding stage involving data reading in native language, choosing socially and culturally relevant words and phrases, and developing preliminary codes. The concluding coding stage focuses on …

Challenges And Opportunities In Personal Assistance Services In Rural Contexts, Krys Standley, Rayna A. Sage, Carissa Russell

Independent Living and Community Participation

Little is known about the experiences of people living in rural areas who need paid assistance for activities of daily living in their homes. This study focused on how rurality and access to workers intersected with the daily and community experiences of people who rely on personal assistants (termed “consumers”) for their activities of daily living. We 38 semi-structured qualitative interviews with people who used personal assistance services and identified as living in a rural place. Interview topics included: Finding, hiring, and training workers; worker qualities; and how living in a rural place impacted personal assistance services. From these interviews, …

Managing Mass Tort Class Actions: Judicial Politics And Rulemaking In Three Acts, Toby S. Goldbach Nov 2022

Managing Mass Tort Class Actions: Judicial Politics And Rulemaking In Three Acts, Toby S. Goldbach

University of Miami Law Review

Judges take part in a variety of non-adjudicative tasks that shape the structure of litigation. In addition to their managerial functions, judges sit as administrative heads of court. They participate in civil justice reform projects and develop procedures for criminal and civil trials. What norms and principles ought to guide judges in this other work? In their casework we expect judges to be neutral and fair, setting aside politics and rationally following the law. Indeed, this article will demonstrate that there is good reason to insist on these qualities in both judges’ case-related and broader court-related reform activities. To test …

Utilization And Impact Of Career Services Among Collegiate Athletes, Evan A. Davis, Shea M. Brgoch, Leeann M. Lower-Hoppe, Makena Lynch, Duncan A. Johnston, Daniel Wray, Kristy Mccray, Megan Parietti

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Career readiness is a concern within the American educational system, particularly among student-athletes that must manage intense time commitments both on and off the field. Student services have emerged in higher education to support career preparation, but the utilization and impact of these services for collegiate athletes is largely unknown. The systems-theory framework (STF) of career development identifies a multitude of internal and external factors that influence individual career development. Guided by STF, the purpose of this study was to predict the factors that influence collegiate athletes' utilization of career services and resulting perceived career skills. An online questionnaire was …

Organizational Support Factors For Minor League Baseball Player Development, Christopher M. Mcleod, Nola Agha, Simon Rosenblum-Larson

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

This study examines organizational support in the context of minor league baseball to better understand how organizations can support athletes’ development. Exploratory results show that English and Spanish players identify salary/pay, off-season training opportunities, and nutritious food as their most important unmet development needs. English and Spanish respondents differently prioritized playing opportunities, communication with front office staff, health care, and equipment as unmet needs. Explanatory results show that organizational support factors (private problem support and second career support) explain 17% of the variation in minor league baseball players’ self-perceptions of development. The results provide guidance for Major League Baseball and …

Dissertations

In 2017, 755,479 veterans received Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to attend higher education (VA, 2018). For many returning veterans a rapid transition from military life to student life not only creates academic barriers but also increases stress (Bagby et al., 2015). Studies focusing on transition found 51% of Post 9/11 veterans experienced difficulty transitioning into civilian life (Anderson & Goodman, 2014). Additionally, combat veterans have reported experiencing greater social isolation and emotional struggles compared to non-combat veterans (Bagby et al., 2015). Schonfeld et al. (2015) studied general student veterans and found that: 34.5 % had severe anxiety, 23.7% had …

Social Capital And Populism In The Philippines: The Case Of Duterte, Artchil Bellosillo Fernandez Nov 2022

Social Capital And Populism In The Philippines: The Case Of Duterte, Artchil Bellosillo Fernandez

Social Sciences and Development Review

The paper tackles the question – are the high performance and trust ratings of President Rodrigo R. Duterte (PRRD) indicative of a deep and abiding social capital existing between state and society, and if so, does this mean that Filipinos will now move away from myopic to enlightened self-interest in addressing the current challenges that the country faces? It interrogates the question through the lens of Putnam’s concept of social capital. The paper discusses Putnam’s notion of social capital, Duterte’s high performance and trust ratings, and whether they are linked. The study likewise explores the broader connection between populism and …

Apprehending The Instability And Divergence In Philippine Jurisprudence Via Feminist Theories Of Public Emotion And Standpoint, Fritz C. Galero, Agnes M. Sunga

Social Sciences and Development Review

Instability and divergence in the decisions rendered by courts of justice are typically accepted with reservations. To better understand this episode of variance, the paper set out to explore how the exercise of judicial discretion contributes to the unpredictability and conflict in jurisprudence or decisions rendered by the Supreme Court of the Republic of the Philippines. Using a case study approach that enabled a comparative examination of two (2) landmark cases decided by the Philippine Supreme Court, which were sourced from the Supreme Court Reports Annotated (SCRA), it was learned that judicial discretion, understood as a variety of public emotion, …
