Moving Beyond Gender Bias, Mariam Ayad Nov 2022

Moving Beyond Gender Bias, Mariam Ayad

Faculty Book Chapters

"There has been considerable scholarship in the last fifty years on the role of ancient Egyptian women in society. With their ability to work outside the home, inherit and dispense of property, initiate divorce, testify in court, and serve in local government, Egyptian women exercised more legal rights and economic independence than their counterparts throughout antiquity. Yet, their agency and autonomy are often downplayed, undermined, or outright ignored. In Women in Ancient Egypt, twenty-four international scholars offer a corrective to this view by presenting the latest cutting-edge research on women and gender in ancient Egypt. Covering the entirety of Egyptian …

The Unequal Burden Of Long Covid, Marc A. Garcia, Catherine Garcia, Erin Bisesti Nov 2022

The Unequal Burden Of Long Covid, Marc A. Garcia, Catherine Garcia, Erin Bisesti

Population Health Research Brief Series

Racial/ethnic disparities in U.S. COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths have been well documented. However, less research has focused on racial/ethnic disparities in long COVID. This data slice summarizes data from the U.S. Census Household Pulse Survey and reports that although there are no significant racial/ethnic differences in overall activity limitations from long COVID, a higher percentage of Black and Hispanic/Latino adults report experiencing “significant” activity limitations compared to Whites.

Violence And Intellectual Extremism And Their Impact On Peaceful Coexistence And State-Building In Iraq After 2003, Abbas Jaber Abdullah Nov 2022

Violence And Intellectual Extremism And Their Impact On Peaceful Coexistence And State-Building In Iraq After 2003, Abbas Jaber Abdullah

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Indeed, ideological extremism and violence lead to a political and economic conflict between the parties responsible for the governance of Iraq. This is the weakest framework for building the state, especially after the historical opportunity that came to the political decision-maker, especially after the end of the totalitarian regime (dictatorship) era in 2003. The fragility of the Iraqi state played a major role in turning to the extremism of the political decision-maker according to sectarian (ideological) affiliation, not the homeland, and moving away from loyalty to the homeland and moving towards sectarian components that believe in violence and ideology extremism, …

The Dance Of Domesticity: How Gender Constructs Obscure Lived Experience At Museums, Marcy J. Botwick Nov 2022

The Dance Of Domesticity: How Gender Constructs Obscure Lived Experience At Museums, Marcy J. Botwick

Museum Studies Theses

My thesis focuses on Mary Shepard Greene Blumenschein and Ernest L. Blumenschein, married artists born in the late 1860s. Ernest Blumenschein was an important regional artist and member of the Taos Society of Artists (TSA). Paintings by Blumenschein and other TSA members promoted tourism in the Southwestern United States through annual exhibitions and their use in advertising the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF). Mary Greene Blumenschein was an award-winning painter and illustrator whose work focused on images of women at the beginning of the twentieth century, however, she is now a secondary and obscure figure in art history. …

In Vitro Liquid Culture Of The Mollusc-Parasitic Nematode Phasmarhabditis (Rhabditida: Rhabditidae), A. Pieterse, S. Haukeland, V. Půža, J. L. Ross, A. P. Malan

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The success of the mollusc-parasitic nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (Schneider) Andrássy (Rhabditida: Rhabditidae), as a biological control agent in Europe has led to worldwide interest in phasmarhabditids as biocontrol agents. In this study, the mass culture potential of three phasmarhabditids, namely Phasmarhabditis papillosa, Phasmarhabditis kenyaensis and Phasmarhabditis bohemica, was assessed. In addition, ten bacterial candidates, consisting of seven associated with slugs and three associated with entomopathogenic nematodes, were investigated. The bacteria were tested for their ability to cause mortality to Deroceras invadens, as well as to support nematode growth. Initial mortality studies demonstrated that Kluyvera, Aeromonas and Pseudomonas spp. (AP3) caused …

Status Seeking In Conspicuous Spectator Sports Consumption: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Yong Wang Nov 2022

Status Seeking In Conspicuous Spectator Sports Consumption: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Yong Wang

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

According to self-determination theory, people are intrinsically and/or extrinsically motivated to self-regulate their behavior (Deci & Ryan, 2012). Sport fans watch games for intrinsic rewards such as having fun and supporting a team, which, from the identity fusion perspective (Swann Jr et al., 2009), derive from their visceral sense of oneness with a team. Although they can choose to watch games at home, many fans spend money attending expensive games (e.g., major sports) and publicly display their experience. A plethora of sport management literature has addressed the intrinsic motivation for attending games; however, less attention has been paid to the …

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This research addresses how student participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) project-based learning (PBL) education activities encourages underrepresented minority student achievement in STEM career field trajectories. Seven New Mexico high school counselors and 12 STEM organization personnel were interviewed during this study. Their responses represent the nuanced professional voices where New Mexico public education intersects with STEM student interest and cultural influence.

For students, STEM PBL can foster deep integration across educational disciplines and enhance STEM career trajectory interest and readiness. STEM education converged with PBL methodologies has the ability to leverage community support while broadening student networks. …

Reclaiming Justice From Below: Victim Participation And Reparations In Post-Conflict Peru, Fiorella P. Vera-Adrianzen Nov 2022

Reclaiming Justice From Below: Victim Participation And Reparations In Post-Conflict Peru, Fiorella P. Vera-Adrianzen

Political Science ETDs

Since 2007, Peru’s Plan Integral de Reparaciones (PIR, Comprehensive Reparations Plan) has provided material, symbolic, individual, and collective reparations to victims of the civil conflict (1980-2000). Important differences in the implementation of reparations have emerged across time and space. Previous studies have examined factors conditioning the adoption and the effects of reparative justice, generally at the national level. How reparative processes unfold on the ground from design to implementation remains underexplored. Drawing upon original interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and archival research in three highly affected Andean regions (Apurímac, Junín, and Ayacucho) and in the capital city, Lima, I examine …

That's A Wrap: Using Cultural Discourse Analysis To Explicate The Film Portrayal Of Communication Between Elderly Parents And Their Adult Child(Ren) In A Caregiving Relationship, Gerri A. Duran Nov 2022

That's A Wrap: Using Cultural Discourse Analysis To Explicate The Film Portrayal Of Communication Between Elderly Parents And Their Adult Child(Ren) In A Caregiving Relationship, Gerri A. Duran

Communication ETDs

There are burgeoning numbers of elderly and a significant number of their adult children provide them with some level of care. To date, there has been little research on elderly parents’ perspective as they communicate with their adult children about the care provided by their children. This dissertation addresses this gap by identifying the nature of the communication, as portrayed in film, which occurs between an elderly parent (EP) and their caregiving adult child (AC).

In addition to identifying the nature of communication between an EP and their AC, I examine the similarities/differences of their communication among the films. I …

Los Juegos De Rol Como Apoyo Para El Desarrollo De Narrativas Literarias De Fantasía Y Ciencia Ficción, Ricardo Victoria-Uribe, Nazario Robles-Bastida

Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

The Penn Effect And Marx's International Law Of Value: A Review Of Value And Unequal Exchange By Andrea Ricci, Giuseppe Quattromini Nov 2022

The Penn Effect And Marx's International Law Of Value: A Review Of Value And Unequal Exchange By Andrea Ricci, Giuseppe Quattromini

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Placing itself in the revival of interest in unequal exchange, Ricci's book claims the need to give the theory a new conceptual foundation to justify recent proposals to estimate unequal exchange on the basis of the so-called Penn effect. In order to do that, Ricci identifies Marx's international law of value as a fitting theoretical framework and hence develops a radically innovative theory of global capitalist exploitation through international trade. Finally, he assesses the magnitude of unequal exchange over the past three decades by producing estimates based on the proposed approach.

Moral Foundations In Bunkerville And Malheur, David Keith Frey Nov 2022

Moral Foundations In Bunkerville And Malheur, David Keith Frey

Theses and Dissertations

The events of the Bunkerville standoff and the Malheur wildlife refuge occupation were both important confrontations with the government by the western land rights movement. Participants in and responders to the events engage in distinct moral judgments and rationales. Utilizing cultural schema analysis and moral foundations theory (MFT), I explored the differences in rationales and judgments made by participants and responders in their explicit, public moral discourses of both events. My analysis indicates that responders and participants defined and utilized the same moral foundations, but in distinct ways. Participants were more diverse in their invocation of moral foundations while responders …

Now It’S Personal: From Me To Mine To Property Rights, David Shoemaker, Bas Van Der Vossen Nov 2022

Now It’S Personal: From Me To Mine To Property Rights, David Shoemaker, Bas Van Der Vossen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Philosophical theories of property rights struggle to adequately explain the moral significance of ownership. We propose that the moral significance of property rights is due to the intersection of what we call "the extended self” and conventionally protected rights claims. The latter, drawing on conventionalist accounts of property rights, explains the social nature and flexibility of property. The former, drawing on naturalist theories, explains their personal nature. The upshot is that we find at this intersection the full moral significance of property.

Unequal Burdens: Cost Burdens In The New York Metropolitan Area, 2000-2017, Marco Castillo, Kasey Zapatka

Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies

Introduction:

This report analyzes different demographic cross-sections for cost-burdened households at various times over the study period (2000, 2010, and 2017).

Methods:

The metro areas include the Public Use Micro Areas (PUMAs) associated with following counties for New York (Rockland, Orange, Westchester, Putnam, Duchess, Nassau, Suffolk, Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond), New Jersey, (Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Union, and Middlesex), and Connecticut (Fairfield). Since counties are not identified in public-use microdata from 1950 onward and PUMAs change over time, we used consistent PUMA boundaries from 2000 to 2010 (https://usa.ipums.org/usa-action/variables/CPUMA0010#description_section). For more on this see a discussion here https://forum.ipums.org/t/i-can-see-couple-of-distinct-countyfips-whereas-the-rest-of-them-are-under-0-countyfips-for-minnesota/1585/4 …

Thanatechnology: Designing For Death, Samantha Grace Bruner Nov 2022

Thanatechnology: Designing For Death, Samantha Grace Bruner

Theses and Dissertations

Thanatechnology, or the study of death technology, is based within the human need to “figure out” death. Through the ages, humans have used technology to further our understanding of what it means to die and what it means to mourn as a way of figuring out what it means to live. Digital data is a huge part of recent digital technology and includes social media data which is a part of many peoples’ daily lives. This leads to many questions including what happens to social media pages when someone dies. These “digital graveyards” leave a lasting impact on many social …

Mosque Architecture In Contemporary Popular Cultures: A Critical Perspective, Mona Helmy Nov 2022

Mosque Architecture In Contemporary Popular Cultures: A Critical Perspective, Mona Helmy

Architectural Engineering

This research paper claims that among important phenomena of several forms of contemporary mosques, there is a blurring of a clear distinction between their related popular/low cultural and formal/high-cultural status. For many centuries, high cultural mosques that are following what so called “formal architectural aesthetics” exist, which shaped by specific sets of well-established design principles and elements, trends, styles, tastes, designs, etc. Parallel to that, mosques in a context of popular cultures are shaped by folkloric signals, signs, and symbols, producing what can be called “Informal aesthetics”.

The popularization of mosque architecture in various contexts of cultural communities has different …
