An Immersive Placements And Moral Growth At Barretstown: Integrating A Transformative Framework With Preservice Teachers In Marianist Teacher Education, Jeremy R. Mills, Annie Chiles, Caroline Miller, Lauren Windsor
An Immersive Placements And Moral Growth At Barretstown: Integrating A Transformative Framework With Preservice Teachers In Marianist Teacher Education, Jeremy R. Mills, Annie Chiles, Caroline Miller, Lauren Windsor
Thomas C. Hunt Building a Research Community Day
This study examines how immersive experiential learning at Barretstown, a therapeutic camp in Ireland, nurtures intellectual, ethical, and spiritual growth in preservice teachers. Framed by William James’ four characteristics of mystical experience — ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and passivity — and grounded in the Marianist philosophy of education, the research employs a qualitative, phenomenological design. Reflective narratives from three teacher candidates were thematically coded, revealing transformative experiences marked by ineffable joy, revelatory insight, enduring impact, and openness to grace. Findings suggest that experiential learning integrated with spiritual and communal formation cultivates educators grounded in empathy, moral awareness, and authentic presence.

México Between Feast And Famine, Dr. Enrique C. Ochoa
LAII Events
In this presentation, Dr. Ochoa will explore the deep contradictions within Mexico’s food systems, where celebrated culinary traditions coexist with hunger, inequality, and rising diet-related disease. Drawing on historical and contemporary analysis, Dr. Ochoa will examine how neoliberal policies and the growing power of mega food corporations —such as GRUMA, Bimbo, and Walmart Mexico—have reshaped food production, distribution, and consumption. The presentation will connect economic and political structures to social and cultural consequences, challenging romanticized narratives of Mexican cuisine. Ultimately, it will touch upon global debates on food sovereignty by envisioning more equitable, sustainable, and socially just food systems.
Cripping The Border – Acompañamiento As Access: An Ethnographic Case Study Of Transborder Youth With Disabilities, Marco O. Amaral
Cripping The Border – Acompañamiento As Access: An Ethnographic Case Study Of Transborder Youth With Disabilities, Marco O. Amaral
Dissertations
The U.S.-Mexico border is a historical, geopolitical site of intense militarization where colonial logics of "othering" converge to marginalize disabled transborder youth. While transborder studies have expanded, students with disabilities remain relegated to the "void" and contained by educational systems that prioritize surveillance over access. Grounded in Sepúlveda’s (2011) acompañamiento and Transborder DisCrit, this ethnographic case study examines the lived experiences of both students and their families who cross the border daily to attend school in the U.S. It frames these journeys not as mere commutes, but as acts of defiance within the broader disability rights movement.

Defensive Publications Series
Developing artificial intelligence (AI) agents for complex organizational settings may be constrained by a scarcity of high-fidelity training data, as real-world datasets can present privacy concerns and some synthetic data may lack causal depth. The disclosed systems and methods describe a multi-agent framework for generating synthetic organizational data. This framework can procedurally generate a social topology of simulated individuals and groups, where agents powered by large language models may operate within a temporal simulation loop to make decisions and perform actions based on a given context. An output of the process can be a persistent, queryable historical record of work …

As a practice, research development encompasses activities that expand innovation and discovery for individuals in academia and industry. Within the research development framework, proposal development refers to activities that support individuals and teams in pursuing funding opportunities. Proposal management encompasses a specific suite of rigorous, reproducible, and structured activities dedicated to preparing a persuasive, coherent, and compliant proposal in response to a funding opportunity. While the approach is scalable, the presence of a skilled professional proposal manager is often reserved for multi-institutional, multi-million-dollar proposals. Proposal management is a well-established profession outside of higher education. Proposal management as a profession has …

Professional Services
Commuter students represent a significant, yet often overlooked, demographic within English higher education (HE). Historically, national policy and institutional practice have failed to adequately acknowledge distinct challenges they face. Using a novel participatory mapping activity, and focus group discussions with 19 commuter students, this paper identifies how commuters are excluded by dominant models of university participation. We examine students’ interactions with campus, peers and staff. Findings reveal how structural norms—such as attendance expectations, financial support, and spatial assumptions—can marginalise learners who do not follow the residential model. Participants described feeling peripheral to university life, with their legitimacy as students sometimes …

Beyond Displacement: Ai-Related Job Loss And Time To Re-Employment, Megan E. Williams, Eric Dahlin
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
This study examines whether workers who lose jobs to AI experience longer unemployment than those displaced for other reasons. Using OLS regression with demographic and occupational controls, results show that, on average, AI-displaced workers find new employment slightly faster. Although these differences are not statistically significant, they suggest AI-related job loss may not uniquely affect reemployment.

Organizing To Engage: A Framework For Conflict Strategy, Paul Mason Carpenter
Organizing To Engage: A Framework For Conflict Strategy, Paul Mason Carpenter
Dissertations
Conflict strategy can be exceedingly complex. While many of the basics are simple, even the simple can be highly complicated to execute. The Schlieffen Plan in World War I appeared straight forward, but execution was a great deal more complex. It failed and the result was years of trench warfare. In addition, leaders entering conflict may not fully appreciate the full context, its effect, and the need for a long term result--a better state of peace.
Strategy and tactics may be challenging to transform as an engagement evolves. In addition, strategists must often commit to courses of action within very …

Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, data were generated through in-depth interviews. Analysis revealed three interrelated themes: the power of practical engagement, experiences of success in the workshop, and limitations in opportunities for explicit design thinking. Findings indicate that hands-on, workshop-based learning played an important role in fostering confidence, motivation, and …

The formation of character and social insight is very important for students to have since elementary school, which makes social studies learning very important to be taught. However, there is a big challenge in social studies learning in elementary schools, namely an interesting learning method in accordance with the development of elementary school students who are still at the concrete operational stage. One solution to overcome this challenge is to apply a meaningful learning approach. This approach makes it easy for students to understand new concepts because the concept is still related to the concepts that students previously had, so …
