Assessing The Compliance Of A Coastal Municipality To The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act Of 2000 (Ra 9003), Michelle Del Rosario

Applied Environmental Research

To bring about a significant change in the SWM situation in the Philippines, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (RA 9003) was enacted to provide local government units with frameworks that would help them solve the looming garbage problem in the country. Despite the presence of the decree, managing wastes remains a problem in the country particularly in the CALABARZON. This study was conducted to assess the extent of compliance of a coastal municipality to RA 9003 in terms of institutional mechanism, comprehensive solid waste management, incentives, and financial solid waste management and compare the assessments of 72 …

Domesticating Recolution: Cairene Collective Housing (1867-1960) & The Reconstruction Of Visual Privacy, Kelsea Izor Jan 2023

Domesticating Recolution: Cairene Collective Housing (1867-1960) & The Reconstruction Of Visual Privacy, Kelsea Izor

All ETDs from UAB

to Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s experimentation with modern architecture in 1956, Cairo experimented with the collective housing unit between 1867 and 1955. Privacy, a central value in middle-class Cairene society, permeated the architectural construction of the collective housing unit, primarily adopting screened fenestration to ensure women’s privacy. In this thesis, I argue that in the collective mid twentieth-century housing units of Nasr City, a utopian style city planned by the Nasser administration, a visual shift in the façade suggests a social shift in the public visibility of Cairene women. Further, I argue that the collective housing units in Nasr …

Understanding Patient Factors Influencing Outpatient Follow-Up Among Adult Survivors Of Acute Kidney Injury: A Mixed Methods Study, Ciara Mitchell Jan 2023

Understanding Patient Factors Influencing Outpatient Follow-Up Among Adult Survivors Of Acute Kidney Injury: A Mixed Methods Study, Ciara Mitchell

All ETDs from UAB

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a growing health concern that is related to both short and long-term health consequences. AKI disproportionately impacts hospitalized patients who often experience competing health conditions that overrides knowledge and awareness concerning AKI diagnosis. Therefore, attending AKI follow-up care after hospital discharge may help increase knowledge and awareness as well as mitigate some of the poor health outcomes associated with AKI. However, AKI follow-up is low among this vulnerable population. Methods: To address this problem, a mixed-methods study was conducted to examine various patient factors influencing AKI follow-up and to explore the illness beliefs of …

Patterns Of Fatal Drug Overdose_ A Multi-City Investigation Of Geospatial Correlates, Keith R. Chichester Jan 2023

Patterns Of Fatal Drug Overdose_ A Multi-City Investigation Of Geospatial Correlates, Keith R. Chichester

All ETDs from UAB

Fatal drug overdoses are now the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., responsible for over 107,600 deaths in 2021. Since 2000 the rate of overdose fatalities has increased over 140%. This epidemic has been particularly impactful in rural areas as from 2006-2016, the rural overdose death rate surpassed those in urban areas. Geospatial analytics provide an effective strategy for identifying profiles and patterns in the spatial distribution of overdose locations as well as geographic and demographic variables that associate with overdose occurrences. Furthermore, predictive risk modeling platforms allow for the identification of anticipated overdose hotspots across a geography …

Successful Aging Among Midlife Black Women: A Latent Class Analysis, Joshua Christian Julian Lewis Jan 2023

Successful Aging Among Midlife Black Women: A Latent Class Analysis, Joshua Christian Julian Lewis

All ETDs from UAB

Successful aging (SA), as outlined by Rowe and Khan, with its objective focus on disease and disability avoidance, maintaining high physical and cognitive function, and sustaining engagement in social and productive activities, was meant to be a benchmark for assessing health and aging. However, given its rigid criteria virtually no one “ages successfully” despite being in otherwise relatively good health. The assumption of unsuccessful aging in populations who experience a higher prevalence of chronic disease, illness, disability, and other health disparities, is implicit in the SA framework outlined by Rowe and Khan and would preclude many Black women from being …

Family Members' Education And Cognitive Functioning Among Older Adults: Investigating The Mediating Role Of Health Behaviors, Lu Tian Jan 2023

Family Members' Education And Cognitive Functioning Among Older Adults: Investigating The Mediating Role Of Health Behaviors, Lu Tian

All ETDs from UAB

Despite a well-established relationship between education and cognitive performance in later life, few studies have considered the effects of educational attainment of the family. The education of one's parents can help prevent cognitive decline, as parents (G1) with more education can transfer more health knowledge, teach health literacy, and cultivate healthy lifestyles. This downward spillover between parental education (G1) and older adults’ (G2) cognitive health is well documented. For the downstream effect, attention is often given to maternal education rather than paternal education. Another line of research examined intergenerational transmissions from children (G3) to parents (G2), finding that having well-educated …

This paper provides an extensive overview of cybersecurity awareness in the young, educated, and technology-savvy population of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), compared to the United States of America (USA) for advancing the scholarship and practice of global cyber governance. We conducted comparative empirical studies to identify differences in specific human factors that affect cybersecurity behaviour in the UAE and the USA. In addition, we employed several control variables to observe reliable results. We used Hofstede’s theoretical framework on culture to advance our investigation. The results show that the targeted population in the UAE exhibits contrasting interpretations of cybersecurity awareness …

"'Wimpy White Boy Syndrome': Does It Exist In The Nicu?", Brittany Nicole Stewart Jan 2023

"'Wimpy White Boy Syndrome': Does It Exist In The Nicu?", Brittany Nicole Stewart

All ETDs from UAB

“Wimpy White Boy Syndrome” (WWBS) is a social phenomenon and belief that exists in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where white boys fare the worst and Black girls fare the best. However, this belief is based on little to no empirical evidence and contradicts the majority of the research that documents Black Americans tend to have worse health outcomes than white Americans. Utilizing electronic medical record data from a Southern, regional, and level IV neonatal intensive care unit, this research project explored racial differences in length of hospital stay, mortality, and resource allocation among low and very low birthweight …

Black On Ice, Precious R. Jackson Jan 2023

Black On Ice, Precious R. Jackson

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to gain perspective into the lived experiences of Black female athletes on the axis of marginalized intersecting identities. Based on the framework of Black Feminist Thought, this project explores how Black women face issues of race while simultaneously battling obstacles related to their gender. Research shows that being situated in this unique position makes it difficult for Black female athletes to focus on playing sports compared to their counterparts. Previous literature indicates that Black female athletes who attend predominantly White institutions (PWIs) have different experiences than Black female athletes who attend historically Black colleges …

The Effects Of Venture Capital Network Centrality On Earnings Management And Profitability Of Portfolio Company: Evidence From The U.S. Market, Yosavee Niranvichaiya, Sorasart Sukcharoensin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Based on a sample of 788 U.S. venture capital-backed IPO companies from 2006 to 2015, this research evaluates the impact of network centrality, venture capital (VC), and earnings management on the future profitability of VC-backed portfolio companies. The results suggest that companies backed by VCs with higher network centrality or that are “more centralized” are likely to have better future profitability after an IPO, even with the use of accrual-based earnings management.

Paul's Approach To Social Superiority In The Corinthian Church Applied To Racial Superiority In The 21st Century Church, Michael R. Burns Jan 2023

Paul's Approach To Social Superiority In The Corinthian Church Applied To Racial Superiority In The 21st Century Church, Michael R. Burns

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to create a model to guide multiracial churches through a process of engaging effectively in the type of equity imagined in Scripture. Paul’s letter, 1 Corinthians, was examined to determine his response to the social systems, structures, and inequities created by status divisions in Roman first-century culture. A set of principles was distilled into a working model of how Paul addressed these situations, which created classes of social superiority and inferiority. This project traced the roots of status division in Corinth to the lie of superiority that first appears in Scripture with the serpent in Eden. The …

Belonging In Graduate Health Professions Education- Implications For Occupational Therapy Education: A Scoping Review, Quinn P. Tyminski, Jenna N. Johnston, Vicky Hung, Jenna Gopman

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Individuals who report a high sense of belonging with their academic institution demonstrate increased levels of academic success, as measured by greater class attendance, increased appropriate classroom behaviors, and better mental health and self-concept. The available literature on this topic focuses minimally on sense of belonging in graduate health professions education and available evidence is even more sparse specific to occupational therapy education. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review to gather foundational knowledge regarding barriers and facilitators to belonging in graduate health professions education to determine implications for occupational therapy education. A total of …

The Impact Of An Educational Human Trafficking Panel On Occupational Therapy Students’ Knowledge And Self-Efficacy, Sarbinaz Bekmuratova, Andrea Thinnes, Yongyue Qi, Arduizur Carli Richie Zavaleta, Ashlynn York

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

A rise in attention to and assistance for human trafficking (HT) victims and survivors has resulted in a call to action for occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals. Victims and survivors often seek healthcare services in a variety of settings, yet ill-equipped healthcare professionals lacking training and self-efficacy with this population have left many unidentified needs unaddressed. Occupational therapists possess the skills necessary to support and assist survivors of HT in their reintegration and healing processes. However, little to no specific training for practitioners in this field has been developed. This study explored how an educational panel of OTs and …

Generative Disruptive Questions: Operationalizing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, And Accessibility In Occupational Therapy Education, Jaime P. Muñoz, Catherine Hoyt, Razan Hamed, Arameh Anvarizadeh, Steven D. Taff Jan 2023

Generative Disruptive Questions: Operationalizing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, And Accessibility In Occupational Therapy Education, Jaime P. Muñoz, Catherine Hoyt, Razan Hamed, Arameh Anvarizadeh, Steven D. Taff

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is one of five pillars upholding the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) strategic plan. Ensuring organizational, educational and governance structures, policies, programs, and services all reflect diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and accessibility (DEIJA) is a priority for the profession. Yet, addressing DEIJA remains a significant challenge in the occupational therapy academic community. Educational programs are a gateway to the profession and play a critical role in whether minoritized persons feel they belong in occupational therapy. This paper proposes a set of Generative Disruptive Questions (GDQ) that can be used to critically examine practices within education that …

Surviving The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death: Cai Yongchun In The Cultural Revolution, Jesse Sun Jan 2023

Surviving The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death: Cai Yongchun In The Cultural Revolution, Jesse Sun

Funded Scholarship

This article examines the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) as a history of trauma for Chinese Protestant intellectuals. Using Cai Yongchun—a graduate of Yenching and Columbia University—as an example, the article aims to 1) demonstrate the overwhelming conformity demanded by the Communist regime and 2) analyze how Christians like Cai sought to align with official lines through intellectual reconstruction. In sum, the party viewed Christian intellectuals as deeply suspect due to their religious and Western affiliations, thus targeting them in successive campaigns that began in the 1950s and culminated in the Cultural Revolution. Despite state marginalization, Christian intellectuals like Cai persisted in …

Constructing Jain Goddess Padmavātī In Gujarati Literature, Venu Mehta

Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

Worship of the goddess Padmāvatī emerged more than a thousand years ago. This article explores three songs about her in Gujarati by Paṇḍit Vīrvijayajī (1773-1852). By analyzing the style and form of his work, one learns a great deal about devotional liturgies that commemorate goddess Padmāvatī’s protection of the Jina Pārśvanātha and, in turn, his protection of her.

An Examination Of Gandhian Economic And Political Thought And Its Relevance To The Empowerment Of Women, Purnima Mehta Bhatt

Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Woke Capital Revisited, Jennifer S. Fan Jan 2023

Woke Capital Revisited, Jennifer S. Fan

Articles

Inclusive corporate leadership is now at the forefront of discussions related to corporate governance. Two corporate theories help to explain the rise in prominence of diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) efforts in corporate leadership. First, an expanded definition of corporate purpose which elevated the idea of the importance of stakeholders, contributed to the momentum from business and legal quarters for broader corporate inclusion. Second, the increasing publicness of corporations—the social expectation of how large, typically public corporations should act given their position of power—also led to corporations becoming more active in the DEI space. It is against this backdrop that …
