Anti-Queer Policy As It Translates To Violence Against The Lgbt Community, Kendall Bush Jan 2023

Anti-Queer Policy As It Translates To Violence Against The Lgbt Community, Kendall Bush

Honors Theses and Capstones

In recent years, the amount of anti-LGBT policy introduced is rapidly increasing (ACLU, 2023). Contemporary policy focuses mainly on queer youth and gender identity, attacking gender-affirming health care and limiting LGBT discussions in public schools. Although these policies are particularly insidious, they follow a trend of queer persecution in the United States. Within federal policy and across state legislation, the panopticon of anti-LGBT policy ensures that queer bodies are policed and monitored. This paper posits that the increase in anti-queer policy translates to an increase in experiences of external and indirect violence. Based on findings from the UCR and various …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Influence Of Teacher Evaluation Process Feedback On Improving Instructional Practice, Ericilda Ottley Herman Jan 2023

Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Influence Of Teacher Evaluation Process Feedback On Improving Instructional Practice, Ericilda Ottley Herman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research has shown that teacher evaluation feedback has not positively impacted teachers’ practice or instruction. An average of 53% of U.S. Virgin Island teachers disagreed or strongly disagreed on the value of the feedback they received from administrators on the evaluation system. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the influence of administrator feedback on the teacher evaluation system as it related to improving teacher instructional practice. Two research questions focused the study approach, one on teacher perceptions of the influence of administrator feedback to enhance their instructional practice and the other on teacher perceptions of the …

Family Perceptions Of Mental Health Service Use Among Mexican Americans, Vickie Gayle Nethercott Jan 2023

Family Perceptions Of Mental Health Service Use Among Mexican Americans, Vickie Gayle Nethercott

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractMexican immigrants are less likely to use psychiatric services compared to people from other race or ethnic groups in the United States, yet little is known about the reasons why the Mexican American population are less likely to seek mental health services. A qualitative descriptive study, guided by Leininger's culture care diversity and universality care theory, was used to explore the perceptions of mental health service use and barriers to psychiatric services for Mexican American immigrants living in the United States. After institutional review board approval was obtained, flyers were placed in five churches in a northwestern U.S state where …

Paternal Supervisor Gatekeeping: How Supervising Fathers Hinder Other Fathers At Work In Their Uptake Of Flexible Work Arrangements, Sophie Hennekam, Jasmine Kelland, Jean Pierre Dumazert Jan 2023

Paternal Supervisor Gatekeeping: How Supervising Fathers Hinder Other Fathers At Work In Their Uptake Of Flexible Work Arrangements, Sophie Hennekam, Jasmine Kelland, Jean Pierre Dumazert

Plymouth Business School

This study explores the role that supervisors play in the low uptake of Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) among fathers in France. We draw on 28 interviews with fathers who had requested access to FWA and reported on the reaction of their supervisors. These supervisors were all fathers themselves and had previously benefitted from such arrangements themselves, but did not grant such policies to other fathers. To understand these unexpected findings, we conducted an additional 16 interviews with supervising fathers in organizations who had previously enjoyed similar FWA. The findings show that supervising fathers can act as barriers to other fathers …

Gender Equality In Ocean Science For Sustainable Development : Analysis Of Ocean Science Institutions In Kenya, Renis Auma Ojwala

World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations

Gender inequality poses a serious problem for national and international developmental programmes such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (the Ocean Decade) and appears in both developed and developing countries. The fundamental aim of the Ocean Decade is to improve ocean health worldwide through generating knowledge, supporting innovations, discovering creative ideas and developing solutions to achieve equitable and sustainable development under the changing environmental, social and climate conditions. The paucity of women in ocean management has been documented as a major hindrance to ocean sustainability and a top challenge to diversity in workplaces because of …

The Paradox Of "Sad Girl" Music, Amelia Wang Jan 2023

The Paradox Of "Sad Girl" Music, Amelia Wang

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

This research paper will assess the representations of female vulnerability and trauma in “sad girl” music and listeners’ role in maintaining the commodification of femininity, trauma, and marginalized experiences. To achieve the aforementioned goals, postfeminism and enlightened sexism will be introduced as frameworks to assess musical works within the “sad girl” music genre. Specifically, the musical works of Lana Del Rey and Phoebe Bridgers, prominent artists in the “sad girl” music genre, will be analyzed under postfeminism and enlightened sexism frameworks to reveal nuanced contributions these representations have in today’s feminist discourse, both positive and negative. “Sad girl” music’s intended …

The Disabled Lens: Viewing Gender Performance, Dorian Marr

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

Black Metal, Trauma, Subjectivity and Sound: Screaming the Abyss is Jasmine Shadrack’s performance autoethnography—in this, she explains her experiences and the sociocultural phenomena that shaped them through the lens of her black metal career. She focuses on her role as guitarist and frontwoman of black metal band Denigrata. Shadrack’s onstage persona is Denigrata Herself, which allows her to experiment with her gender presentation and portray aspects of her trauma and disabilities in a way she is comfortable with. As the pain from her complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) and fibromyalgia increased, Shadrack eventually had to leave Denigrata. Due to her …

John Wesley’S Motivation For His Mission To Georgia, Roger W. Fay

The Asbury Journal

The importance of justification by faith in the thinking of John Wesley (1703-1791) after his Aldersgate Street experience in May 1738 has long been doubted by some Wesley scholars. This article argues, however, that Wesley was motivated only by works-righteousness while he was a missionary to Georgia, and that salvation by faith did not characterise his thinking until he finished his mission there.

A Constitutional Perspective On Institutional Neutrality, Tom Ginsburg Jan 2023

A Constitutional Perspective On Institutional Neutrality, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

We live in an era of the academic corporate statement, in which university leaders issue pronouncements on various issues as if they were political figures. Like their counterparts in large corporations, they apparently feel the need to state institutional values publicly and often. Commentary on the issues of the day is seen as projecting pastoral empathy and solidarity; silence is viewed as complicity. We want leaders who can craft the perfect statement satisfying all, and in the right font size.

Such trends cut directly against the intuition behind the Kalven report, which is that academic institutions should remain spaces of …

What Is An Authentic Relationship?, Joseph B. Johnston Jan 2023

What Is An Authentic Relationship?, Joseph B. Johnston

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Research

There is perhaps nothing more hopeful in the world than to attempt to develop a truly meaningful relationship with another human being. The formation of authentic relationships can be powerful for many reasons including contributing to the formation of collective movements and social change. But, what does an authentic relationship look like in an inherently-time-limited community-engaged learning (CEL) experience? I utilize the case of a CEL class, rooted in some of the aims of the Jesuit Justice Circle (experience, understanding, imagination), which offers the opportunity for college students to enjoy early morning walks to school with youth. I analyze student …

Mechanisms In Open Innovation: A Review And Synthesis Of The Literature, Ruben H.A.J. Ogink, Martin C. Goossen, A. Georges L. Romme, Henk Akkermans

Management Faculty Publications

A large body of literature explores the role of context, structure, actors, and outcomes of open innovation (OI), yet pays little attention to the mechanisms underlying these relationships. In this review paper, we synthesize the OI literature using a context-mechanism-outcome approach to identify and classify the various mechanisms observed in empirical OI studies. Our findings demonstrate that the OI literature draws on a wide variety of mechanisms originating from the fields of management, sociology, economics, and psychology. The fifteen mechanisms most frequently observed in the literature fall into four categories: governance and policies; environmental dynamics and interactions; knowledge, skills, and …

Improving Disease Management Among People With Type 2 Diabetes Through Mobile Persuasion: Development And Test Of The Construal Model Of Health-Related Communicative Control, Fatima Barakji

Wayne State University Dissertations

Many chronic illnesses can be managed by adhering to recommended medical regimens and through the avoidance of unhealthy behaviors, which foregrounds the importance of social control, a construct concerned with restricting/ regulating an existing unhealthy behavior or warning of a future unhealthy behavior (Craddock et al., 2015; Sarason & Sarason, 2001). This dissertation study investigated social control from a communication perspective by developing the concept of health-related communicative control (HRCC), which refers to the reduction, restriction, regulation, or elimination of undesirable health behaviors through persuasive verbal messages. Using this concept along with construal level theory (Trope & Liberman, 2010) from …

A Historical And Philosophical Comparison: Joseph De Maistre & Edmund Burke, Carl J. Demarco Jr.

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Most historians have focused on the British thinker and statesman Edmund Burke, when discussing the development of Conservatism. He is often considered the “Father of Conservatism” as his principal work Reflections on the Revolution in France inspired generations of conservative thinkers. However, another conservative thinker was writing during the same period as Burke and has been relatively lost to history. Joseph de Maistre, was developing conservative thought at the same time as Burke, but has received little to no credit for the influence he held. The aim of this paper is to show that Maistre was just as influential in …

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (Asmr) Use In College Students, Pratibha Gautam, Gina Mariano, Frank Hammonds Jan 2023

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (Asmr) Use In College Students, Pratibha Gautam, Gina Mariano, Frank Hammonds

Modern Psychological Studies

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is the experience of tingling sensations in the crown and back of the head as a response to a range of audio-visual triggers such as whispering, tapping, and hand movements (Hostler, 2020). The number of people who produce and utilize ASMR inducing media has increased in the last few years, but little research has been done investigating its use among college students. This experimental study sought to investigate if viewing ASMR videos could reduce heart rate and perceived stress in college students. Twenty participants were shown either an ASMR video or a control video. Before …

Questioning The Legitimacy Of The Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Construct, Isabelle J. Weigel-Mohamed

Modern Psychological Studies

This literature review examines 45 journal articles from a variety of disciplines, including genetics, neuropsychology, child and school psychology, evolutionary psychology, clinical psychology, and psychopharmacology. The review features a popular article published in the New York Times; though not a peer-reviewed journal article, it provides evidence of the pervasive social impact of the Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) debate. This review covers articles published between the years 1971 to 2021, with a greater emphasis on articles published after 2013 (over 50% of the review, given that the ADHD construct was reconceptualized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition …

Perceived Barriers To And Comfort Levels With Hypothetical Intimate Partner Violence Help-Seeking Among Arab Americans, Jana Mostafa Jan 2023

Perceived Barriers To And Comfort Levels With Hypothetical Intimate Partner Violence Help-Seeking Among Arab Americans, Jana Mostafa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Members of the Arab American community experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) face unique barriers to help-seeking and have different comfort levels with using formal and informal resources. This thesis surveyed Arab-Americans to identify perceived barriers and comfort levels with IPV help-seeking. A culturally informed and centered approach was taken to examine connections between individual level factors, perceived barriers and comfort levels in using resources. To do so, I gathered data via an online survey with 82 Arab American participants. Findings suggest that participants perceived the greatest barriers to seeking help for IPV are related to how others view and understand …

Characteristics Of Effective Postsecondary Advising: How Often To Meet And What To Focus On, Grace Pai, Melissa De Feo

Publications and Research

Using data from a senior exit survey administered at public high schools in New York City, this study explores the relationship between quantity and quality of postsecondary advisement, parental/guardian involvement in postsecondary planning, and students’ likelihood of exiting high school with a full-time college plan. Results show receiving help in completing college applications, along with talking to a counselor and parents/guardians at least 3 times in their senior year, to be salient predictors of college-going.

This study examines how a community engagement model of near-peer counseling impacts counselors’ own college success as underrepresented students in higher education, here defined as one-year persistence in college. Near-peer mentors participated in a program provided by College Access: Research and Action (CARA), which trains young people to support peers in their home communities at New York City public high schools and City University of New York (CUNY) 2-year colleges through critical college application, enrollment, and retention milestones. Aggregated across 4 years of data, our results indicate CARA near-peer counselors are nearly twice as likely to persist in college (p < .001) as peers with similar demographic and academic characteristics not participating in CARA. Findings are replicated for students of color (2.09 times higher, p < .001) and economically disadvantaged students (1.78 times higher, p = .003). Implications for peer mentor program development through public university–community partnerships are discussed.
