National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Honors education has a rich history of preparing students to be good communicators, to think deeply and broadly, to collaborate effectively, and to be ethical citizens engaged in communities. The challenges of contemporary society, however, call for something more. To engage effectively with complex societal issues, students must identify and collaborate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders in the community, understand and employ systems thinking, value highly diverse perspectives, and develop communication skills for conflict management. To develop these additional skills and perspectives, the authors invoke the concept of fourth space as the deep engagement of honors students in …

From The Top Down: Implications Of Honors College Deans’ Race And Gender, Malin Pereira, Jacqueline Smith-Mason, Karoline Summerville, Scott Linneman Jan 2023

From The Top Down: Implications Of Honors College Deans’ Race And Gender, Malin Pereira, Jacqueline Smith-Mason, Karoline Summerville, Scott Linneman

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Most honors college deans are White males, yet most students enrolled in honors colleges are women; more often than not, there is glaring underrepresentation of diverse races and ethnicities among student populations in honors colleges. Considering these data, the authors ask whether honors colleges perpetuate the “Oxford College Don” model of White male privilege and power. Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and other students of color often look at the leaders of honors colleges and rarely see themselves, and White honors students lack the opportunity to see diverse leadership models. This chapter explains how and why faculty of color and women face …

Necessary For Some, And Helpful For All: Preparing Music Educators To Reach Every Student, Rhoda Bernard Jan 2023

Necessary For Some, And Helpful For All: Preparing Music Educators To Reach Every Student, Rhoda Bernard

Faculty Works

The percentage of students in U.S. public schools who are classified as stu- dents with disabilities under the Individ- uals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has been steadily increasing in recent years, and continues to grow. Unfortu- nately, music educators are not adequate- ly prepared to teach disabled students. Pre-service music teacher education pro- grams do not provide course content in the pedagogy of accessible music educa- tion. Any coursework related to students with disabilities that is provided by these programs is limited to general studies of the historical and legal aspects of special education. As a result, music teachers …

(Special Section, Hymns Beyond The Congregation Ii): “We’Ll Understand It Better By And By:” Nomenclature, Negotiation, And Naming Our Neighbors, Emmett G. Price Iii Jan 2023

(Special Section, Hymns Beyond The Congregation Ii): “We’Ll Understand It Better By And By:” Nomenclature, Negotiation, And Naming Our Neighbors, Emmett G. Price Iii

Faculty Works

Hymns, whether composed for religious contexts or as expressions of spiritual reflection, are historically revered for their redemptive nature. For generations, Black Hymnody has cried out for Christological interventions to end shambolic and systemic oppression against Black people. The vicious murder of George Perry Floyd, Jr. on May 25, 2020 reverberated and initiated, as a catalyst, an overdue global awakening that sparked a catalytic moment for conversations too long deferred. Conversations that question how we experience and name things; how we negotiate trauma; and how we engage one another as neighbors. In many ways, the redemptive nature of hymns has …

[From the Executive Summary]

The Social Science Research Center (SSRC) at Old Dominion University (ODU) is pleased to present the results from the 14th annual Life in Hampton Roads (LIHR) survey. The purpose of the survey was to gain insight into residents’ perceptions of the quality of life in Hampton Roads. Surveys this year were completed over the telephone as they were last year and prior to 2020. Less than two-thirds of respondents rated the quality of life in the region as excellent or good (62.3%). This is lower than last year (69.3%) and is lower than most previous non-COVID …

Updated Perspectives On Linking School Bullying And Related Youth Violence Research To Effective Prevention Strategies, Dorothy L. Espelage, Susan M. Swearer Jan 2023

Updated Perspectives On Linking School Bullying And Related Youth Violence Research To Effective Prevention Strategies, Dorothy L. Espelage, Susan M. Swearer

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Bullying, a subset of aggression, has been an international focus of scholarship for several decades and has been declared as public health concern globally (Espelage, 2015; Hymel & Espelage, 2018; Kann et al., 2018). An abstract literature search with the terms “adol*” and “bully*” yielded 382 peer-reviewed journal articles from 2001 through 2010, and an astounding 1585 articles from 2011 through 2020.

Within the last decade, there has been a concerted effort among scholars to reach a consensus on how bullying should be defined, operationalized, and assessed, how it differs from other forms of aggression (e.g., dating violence), and how …

Nebraska Child Care Market Rate Survey Report 2023, Alexandra Daro, Greg W. Welch, Venessa Bryant

Buffet Early Childhood Institute Reports and Publications

The Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) Act of 2014 was reauthorized with renewed emphasis on the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) program, which seeks to provide equal access to quality child care for families. The CCDF program is necessary to ensure children from families with lower income have the opportunity to experience stable, high-quality early experiences while their parents experience a pathway to economic stability. A primary goal of the CCDF program is to ensure that families with lower income receive CCDF funds to help them access quality child care in the same manner as families that …

Profiles Of Well-Being Among Early Childhood Educators, Amy M. Roberts, Alexandra Daro, Kathleen C. Gallagher Jan 2023

Profiles Of Well-Being Among Early Childhood Educators, Amy M. Roberts, Alexandra Daro, Kathleen C. Gallagher

Buffet Early Childhood Institute Reports and Publications

Research Findings: This study used a person-centered data analytic approach to identify distinct subgroups of early childhood educators (n= 133) based on their responses to multiple indicators of well-being (psychological, financial, and health indicators). Various fit indices established a two-class solution. Specifically, one group was characterized by more positive well-being and the other by less positive well-being. Subgroup differences were the greatest for indicators of psychological well-being, including self-care and self-compassion. In addition, educators with less than a bachelor’s degree, working as assistant teachers, receiving less pay, with more adverse childhood experiences, were overrepresented in the less positive …

E2: Equity And Excellence Framework, Adrienne Coleman, Traci Ellis

Publications & Research

Both the United States and the United Nations have identified, examined, and put out a call to action to address the educational inequities that have disproportionately and negatively affected racially minoritized students, as well as those from a lower socioeconomic background, and poorer countries. Data from the Nations Report Card and the Global Monitoring Report provide evidence of disparities in academic performance and access to equitable educational resources. The outcome of these inequities impacts countries throughout the world, as their residents will not possess the skills and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly evolving global society, nor possess the critical …

A Restoration Of Paul’S Understanding Of Faith As A Relationship Of Action, Godfrey J. Ellis Jan 2023

A Restoration Of Paul’S Understanding Of Faith As A Relationship Of Action, Godfrey J. Ellis

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Brent Schmidt builds on his earlier book on relational grace by tackling the topic of relational faith. For those interested in historical trends in religious thought, this book provides intimate details of Greek and Latin terms and the gradual corruption of the original Pauline concept of faith by Augustine and other early and influential thinkers and theologians. Leading the reader through the conceptual reworking of the idea of faith by examining both well-known and lesser-known reformers, but somewhat skirting the faith-works debate, Schmidt ends up nevertheless convincingly demonstrating two facts. First, that faith as concrete action, not just as abstract …

The Color(Blind) Conundrum In Colorado Property Law, Tom I. Romero Jan 2023

The Color(Blind) Conundrum In Colorado Property Law, Tom I. Romero

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This article interrogates the ongoing denial and erasure of the legacy of settler-colonialism and White supremacy in the color-lines created by Colorado property law. While Colorado has long been venerated as forward and future thinking, especially when it comes to matters of race relations, its system of property law has structured deeply embedded institutional and systematic racial inequities. In short, property has created a conundrum about how we collectively think of, talk about, and deal with race, its origins, and legacies arising out of settler-colonialism and White supremacy. The color(blind) property conundrum is detailed in three ways in this article. …

Administration As Democratic Trustee Representation, Katharine Jackson Jan 2023

Administration As Democratic Trustee Representation, Katharine Jackson

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

The “folk” theory of democracy that typically justifies the administrative state cannot help but lead to a discourse of constraint. If agency action is only legitimate when it mechanically applies the will of the voters as transposed by Congress through statutes, then the norms guiding that action will inevitably restrain agency discretion. As a result, attempts to establish the democratic credentials of the administrative state ironically obstruct the application of collective power. But this “folk” theory of democracy is bad theory. It is empirically incredible and, alarmingly, facilitates dangerous populist politics. Political theory instead suggests that a theory of democratic …

The Limits Of Presence: Constraints On Women’S Political Representation In Serbia And Montenegro, Anja Vojvodić Jan 2023

The Limits Of Presence: Constraints On Women’S Political Representation In Serbia And Montenegro, Anja Vojvodić

Publications and Research

Women’s political representation has increased globally over the past few decades. Women are entering the political world in more significant numbers. This increase is visible among the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Within the last three decades, women have become present in greater numbers across the parliaments of the former Yugoslavia, primarily due to the adoption of gender quotas due to women’s movement activism. But is the presence of elected women enough to empower them politically and create “space” for activism, advocacy, and subsequently higher levels of substantive representation? In this work, I pose this main research question and focus …

How Life Trajectories Are Shaped By Choices: Diving Into The Decision-Making Process Among Young Mexican-American Adults Recounting Their High School Experiences, Vianey Jaramillo Jan 2023

How Life Trajectories Are Shaped By Choices: Diving Into The Decision-Making Process Among Young Mexican-American Adults Recounting Their High School Experiences, Vianey Jaramillo

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to explore how the use and availability of resources along with the perceptions of attainable opportunities for life after high school affect the decision-making process among Mexican American high school students. This project utilized both a quantitative and qualitative approach to gather information on participants' high school experiences and choices as they advanced into their journeys after high school. Participants were given a self-efficacy scale and took part in semi-structured interviews that ranged from 37 to 80 minutes. The thematic analysis highlights nine themes that reveal aspects of participants' journeys since high school while …

Between Nationalist Politics And Traditional Gender Ideologies: Chinese Women’S Higher Education In The Late Qing And Republican Eras, Lisa Hyde Jan 2023

Between Nationalist Politics And Traditional Gender Ideologies: Chinese Women’S Higher Education In The Late Qing And Republican Eras, Lisa Hyde

Theses & ETDs

Prior to 1907, elite Chinese women typically received private education at home. However, by 1919, public universities were established for the first time in Chinese history for women to enroll. How to explain the rapid growth of Chinese women’s higher education during this period? This thesis aims to answer this important question by tracing the development of three types of higher education available for Chinese women then: public, private, and overseas. It first traces the establishment of higher learning institutions for female students since the late Qing in the context of national crises. It then focuses on sex-segregated institutions, specifically …

Chinese Diaspora In The Caribbean: A Study Of Immigration, Ginelle Swan Jan 2023

Chinese Diaspora In The Caribbean: A Study Of Immigration, Ginelle Swan

Theses & ETDs

This paper examines the economic, social, and cultural ties that Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago have with China, as well as how these connections have shifted over time as different waves of Chinese immigrants came to the Caribbean. This paper also analyzes China’s developments and geopolitical aspirations in the Caribbean. The paper analyzes the sociocultural history of the three nations and highlights significant events that influenced Trinidad and Tobago's and Jamaica's social and economic hierarchies. Although other ethnic groups that traveled to the islands from the nineteenth century to the present are only briefly mentioned, this research extensively emphasizes the …

The Shape Of Justice: Women’S Experiences Of Social And Reproductive Justice Activism In A Local Unitarian Universalist Community, Nat Kornblum Jan 2023

The Shape Of Justice: Women’S Experiences Of Social And Reproductive Justice Activism In A Local Unitarian Universalist Community, Nat Kornblum

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to explore the role of Unitarian Universalist women in social justice initiatives. Through a series of unstructured interviews with three women who assist with social justice initiatives at the UU Church of Sarasota, I hope to describe the influence of the faith in women’s lives, specifically how it influences their understanding of themselves and of their communities. Drawing on feminist ethnographic methods, I also used participant observation, attending several services and workshops put forth by the church. This ethnography is a collection and synopsis of my observations, interviews, and experiences among the women of the Unitarian Universalists …

Unpaid Labor, Social Reproduction Theory, And Transgender Communities Of Care: A Transgender Social Reproduction Framework, Riley Bedell Jan 2023

Unpaid Labor, Social Reproduction Theory, And Transgender Communities Of Care: A Transgender Social Reproduction Framework, Riley Bedell

Theses & ETDs

Marxist analysis has been frequently dismissed as a class reductionist framework which omits important considerations of many unique, interconnected oppressions within its theoretical vision of building a more equitable future. On the contrary, this thesis builds upon Marx’s foundational critique of capitalism to show how an intersectional feminist approach can be derived from his theories of alienation, expropriation, and emancipation. In doing so, I draw upon social reproduction theory and feminist movements to show how capitalist society shapes the oppressions and depends upon unpaid reproductive labor processes which occur within it in a contradictory, crisis-invoking manner. As a result, I …

Queering Classics: A Dinner Party With The Devil, Dracula, And Dante Alighieri (Hosted By Dr. Hannibal Lecter), Lex Daly Jan 2023

Queering Classics: A Dinner Party With The Devil, Dracula, And Dante Alighieri (Hosted By Dr. Hannibal Lecter), Lex Daly

Theses & ETDs

For my thesis project, I have compiled a portfolio of three essays on the NBC television series Hannibal (2013-2015). Chapter 1 employs queer theory for a religious studies analysis of the show's characterization of Hannibal Lecter as the embodiment of Satan. Chapter 2 uses Jeffrey Jerome Cohen's "Seven Theses of Monster Culture" as the framework with which to compare and contrast the evolving mythos of both Count Dracula and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, as part of a greater deconstruction on how they exemplify Western constructions of monstrosity across time. Finally, Chapter 3 delves into the series' extensive allusions to Dante Alighieri's …

Amalgam: Queering And Decolonizing Genre And Music Practice, Ash Hoffman Jan 2023

Amalgam: Queering And Decolonizing Genre And Music Practice, Ash Hoffman

Theses & ETDs

This project examines why and how, musically, and in creative praxis, I began my journey towards a decolonized, genre-less approach to creation through the process of writing, recording, and producing my first studio album. AMALGAM, the paper, and the accompanying album, aims to assess the intricate relationships and challenges that exist intersectionally between music, creativity, and the world's many oppressive social systems which come as a result of our colonized conditionings. The goal of the praxis and messages explored in this work is to engage in a queering process of our relationships to genre and music as they have been …
