Upep 2023 Executive Summary, Community & Natural Resources Institute

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)

Utah's people and environment are currently experiencing significant changes as the population continues to grow, droughts and flooding pose threats to agriculture, air quality leads to health concerns, energy needs rise, and public lands see increased use. Action is needed to address these changes, especially given how rapidly they are occurring. Political leaders, environmental organizations, Tribal Nations, and universities play a critical role in ensuring Utah’s environment, economy, workforce, and underserved communities have a sustainable path forward. Understanding residents’ views, values, and concerns can help better craft the policy, inform infrastructure, and identify the services needed to do so. With …

The Black Box Unboxed: Black Music As A Medium For Black People To Wield Rhetorical Power, Channing Harrell

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Freedom, too, the long-sought, we still seek, —” (DuBois, 1903, p. 7) The foremost endeavor of people of historically marginalized racial/ethnic communities, and particularly for the purposes of this paper, Black people, is to be free. The term “free” has several connotations that are frequently used by the general public in a typically detached manner. Free. To be educated, empowered and autonomous, thus unobstructed and restrained by subjection to the hegemony of the more highly educated and empowered. You might be wondering, “Who are ‘we’?” and “Why are ‘we’ still seeking freedom?” The answers to your questions will be …

A Multi-Year Study Of Engineering Self-Efficacy In The Us: Exploring Gender Differences In A Small Engineering Program. International Journal Of Gender, Lillian C. Jeznach, Maija A. Benitz, Selby M. Conrad

Engineering, Computing & Construction Management Faculty Publications

This study presents the baseline results of an ongoing study at a small liberal arts university in the US and explores the gender differences in engineering selfefficacy, preparedness, and engagement in undergraduate engineering students. Data from the first timepoint of the survey was used to identify factors such as high school grade point average (GPA), math preparedness, high school mentoring, and college extracurricular involvement, and their correlations with engineering selfefficacy, as measured by the Longitudinal Assessment of Engineering Self-Efficacy (LAESE) scale. Investigation of LAESE subscales revealed that students (regardless of gender) who entered college having previously studied calculus reported greater …

Wicked Problems And The Invention Of Calculus, Ernesto Diaz Jan 2023

Wicked Problems And The Invention Of Calculus, Ernesto Diaz

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Since the 1980s, wicked problems have represented a category of challenges that defy clear description, cannot be addressed with existing models or theories, and resist experimentation in trying to solve them. This class of problems existed before they were identified and have been unsuccessfully addressed with Thomas Kuhn’s model of scientific discovery, an expectation that requires the identification of a new object and the development of its correct interpretation. This paper proposes an alternative view of scientific discovery using the invention of Calculus as a case study that describes a successful process addressing wicked-like problems from a philosophical perspective, develops …
