Examining Undergraduate College Students’ Experiences Participating In Longitudinal Qualitative Research, Rosemary J. Perez, Arely Acuña, Marissiko M. Wheaton Feb 2023

Examining Undergraduate College Students’ Experiences Participating In Longitudinal Qualitative Research, Rosemary J. Perez, Arely Acuña, Marissiko M. Wheaton

The Qualitative Report

While many researchers describe the potential benefits to individuals if they opt to participate in qualitative research, it is not always feasible to empirically examine how engaging in a study influence the participants. Acknowledging this gap, we conducted a descriptive qualitative study to explore how 67 low-income students described their experiences as participants in a larger longitudinal qualitative research project that involved regularly submitting video diaries and participating in interviews over the course of three years. Overall, participants characterized their experiences as positive and highlighted unanticipated benefits of the project. Although many individuals were drawn to the project for the …

Pre-Schoolers’ Images, Intergroup Attitudes, And Liking Of Refugee Peers In Germany, Iris Würbel, Patricia Kanngiesser Feb 2023

Pre-Schoolers’ Images, Intergroup Attitudes, And Liking Of Refugee Peers In Germany, Iris Würbel, Patricia Kanngiesser

School of Psychology

There is extensive research on children’s intergroup attitudes, but their perceptions of refugee children have rarely been studied. We conducted a study with 5- and 6-year-old children (N = 60) in Germany following the arrival of unprecedented large numbers of refugees in 2015 and 2016. Children completed a set of three tasks that measured their perceptions of refugee children (minority group) and German children (majority group): a draw-a-typical-child task (including questions about whether participants wanted to interact with the depicted child), an intergroup attitude task, and a liking task. Results indicate that participants drew similar pictures of and had similar …

Using Bloom's Taxonomy For Math Outreach Within And Outside The Classroom, Manmohan Kaur Feb 2023

Using Bloom's Taxonomy For Math Outreach Within And Outside The Classroom, Manmohan Kaur

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Not everyone is a great artist, but we don’t often hear, “I dislike art.” Most people are able to appreciate visual arts, music and sports, without necessarily excelling in it themselves. On the other hand, the phrase “I dislike math” is widely prevalent. This is especially ironic in our current society, where mathematics affects our day-to-day activities in essential ways such as e-commerce and e-mail. This paper describes the opportunity to popularize mathematics by focusing on its fun and creative aspects, and illustrates this opportunity through a brief discussion of interdisciplinary topics that expose the beauty, elegance and value of …

The Integration Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Into The Discipline Of Communication Sciences And Disorders, Jennifer Friberg, Jerry K. Hoepner, Allison M. Sauerwein, Kerry Mandulak Feb 2023

The Integration Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Into The Discipline Of Communication Sciences And Disorders, Jennifer Friberg, Jerry K. Hoepner, Allison M. Sauerwein, Kerry Mandulak

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

McKinney (2018) has argued that for the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) to advance within a discipline, the integration of SoTL must be closely examined and opportunities for growth in SoTL must be recognized and discussed. To that end, this paper reflects on the degree to which SoTL is integrated into communication sciences and disorders (CSD) by examining a variety of topics: perspectives and theories historically valued by our discipline, existing supports for SoTL at various levels (i.e., individual teacher-scholars, departments, institutions, and the CSD discipline as a whole), the application of SoTL findings in teaching and learning. Four …

The Liminal Church: Why Navigating Thresholds Between Us Leads To Thriving, Andrew Hale Feb 2023

The Liminal Church: Why Navigating Thresholds Between Us Leads To Thriving, Andrew Hale

Doctor of Leadership

Through the discovery, design, and delivery stages of the doctoral project, I centered my work on the following NPO: Churches can thrive when they understand, navigate, and leverage the liminality existing between people, the community, and where God is leading. Despite the myriad of different contexts among local churches, whether polity, worship style, belief statements, and geographical locality, congregations are still composed of people living in relationship to one another and the community around them. Relationships, no matter their nature, are complicated. For the relationships within a local church to thrive, they require intentionality, coaching, effort, openness, and vulnerability. My …

Complexities Of Health And Care Worker Migration Pathways And Corresponding International Reporting Requirements, Margaret Walton-Roberts, Ivy Bourgeault, Denise Spitzer Feb 2023

Complexities Of Health And Care Worker Migration Pathways And Corresponding International Reporting Requirements, Margaret Walton-Roberts, Ivy Bourgeault, Denise Spitzer

Global Nurse Migration Pathways: A Comparative Project

The increasing complexity of the migration pathways of health and care workers is a critical consideration in the reporting requirements of international agreements designed to address their impacts. There are inherent challenges across these different agreements including reporting functions that are misaligned across different data collection tools, variable capacity of country respondents, and a lack of transparency or accountability in the reporting process. Moreover, reporting processes often neglect to recognize the broader intersectional gendered and racialized political economy of health and care worker migration. We argue for a more coordinated approach to the various international reporting requirements and processes that …

White Supremacy And The Major Scale: Reframing Narratives To Teach The Blues, Improvise, And Check In With Students, John B. Bass Iii

Research & Issues in Music Education

Increasing diversity and equity in secondary and college music programs is a common thread in the scholarship across disciplines in the field. While crucial work is being done to decolonize curricula broadly, students often express difficulty relating to formal music study and teachers struggle to balance desires to diversify repertoire and incorporate alternative pedagogical strategies with their own training. Narratives of white supremacy and music have intersected for over 400 years, but the effect goes beyond the composers and pieces we choose to program or teach. It influences foundational concepts of theory, tuning, and even what notes are (the major …

Latest Research: Summary 1. Climate Change Research And The Search For Solutions: Rethinking Interdisciplinarity

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

After the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on 1.5C in 2018, the escalated pressure to act on climate change has urged scientists to move past providing information regarding climate change and to helping define solutions. The growing need for solutions has put a spotlight on how different disciplines collaborate through interdisciplinary research approaches.

Built To Last: An In-Depth Look At The Multisite Church And Ministry Succession, Scott R. Jones Feb 2023

Built To Last: An In-Depth Look At The Multisite Church And Ministry Succession, Scott R. Jones

Doctor of Ministry

The multisite church model is a movement that, by all indications, is here to stay. According to Portable Church Industries, there are only twelve single-campus churches listed among the top 100 largest churches in the United States. If multi-site churches were a Protestant denomination, they’d be the fourth largest. 1 The NPO addressed is: Multisite churches are predominantly first generation with personality centric leadership, needing intentionality for sustainability and succession. I serve as lead pastor of Grace Church – a non-denominational church with four campuses in the Houston area. I am in my 28th year of tenure. We transitioned to …

Wench, Witch, Wife, Widow: The Power Of Address Terms In The Witch Of Edmonton, Laura Kolb Feb 2023

Wench, Witch, Wife, Widow: The Power Of Address Terms In The Witch Of Edmonton, Laura Kolb

Publications and Research

This chapter explores address terms and their power to shape social reality, especially for women and the socially precarious. The opening of The Witch of Edmonton—“Come, wench!”—is the first of many moments in which one character classifies another in terms of gender, class, or social position. Tracking characters’ reactions to being named (and thereby “placed”) reveals divergent perspectives on the fit between assigned social identity and self-evaluation.

Ileap: An Intercultural Leadership Pilgrimage For Young Adults (Age 18-24), Elmarie Parker

Doctor of Leadership

The opportunity addressed in this research is to create an effective leadership capacity-building experience equipping young adults (18-24 years old) to practice justice, equity, reconciliation, and perseverance while positively impacting society in Lebanon and Oregon. iLEAP: An Intercultural Leadership Pilgrimage for Young Adults, is the result. My research has revealed that young adults want a learning environment that supports the cultivation of positive self-identity, meaningful connection with others, and agency. They want to develop cross-cultural friendships and collaborations and want to be equipped for effectively working with difference. Additionally, they want to cultivate visioning skills that lead to discerning and …

A Case Study: Do Board Consultants And Funders Have It Wrong?, Mike Burns Feb 2023

A Case Study: Do Board Consultants And Funders Have It Wrong?, Mike Burns

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

The following case, a moment in time for a 25+ year-old nonprofit, features a smart, committed, driven, savvy, and uber persuasive nonprofit founder/executive who decided it was time to expand the building. Also featured: a board that has never been more than a figurehead to the executive and the public. This case is intended to highlight that the popular thinking about board and executive as partners may be no more than a false narrative throughout the nonprofit sector that should in-fact be rewritten to reflect more of a reality. As a subplot, this case acknowledges that when a board cannot …

The Measurement Of Gender Expression In Survey Research, Dana Garbarski Feb 2023

The Measurement Of Gender Expression In Survey Research, Dana Garbarski

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Previous research on the survey measurement of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) often focuses on the measurement of identity, with comparably little research focused on gender expression as a key feature of how gender is lived and experienced. This study examines the reliability and validity of survey questions about gender expression in a 2-by-5-by-2 factorial experiment that varies the question order, type of response scale, and the order of gender presentation in the response scale.

The results indicate that the effect of which (side of the) scale is presented first on gender expression varies by gender for …

The Nebraska Teacher Pipeline: Trends In Perceptions Of Preparedness Of Novice Teachers, Cassandra A. Destefano Feb 2023

The Nebraska Teacher Pipeline: Trends In Perceptions Of Preparedness Of Novice Teachers, Cassandra A. Destefano

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The increased attrition in the teacher workforce has policy makers at state and national levels attempting to fill vacancies from a candidate pool that is drying up. Particularly of interest is the percentage of beginning teachers who are leaving the profession early in their careers. Researchers have examined elements of preparation or induction programs in relation to teacher effectiveness to understand needs of preservice and novice teachers. Elements such as required coursework, clinical experiences, mentoring programs, and professional development have been studied. Some studies have examined preparedness in relation to student achievement or supervisor appraisals of novice teachers. Researchers have …

Mathematics Capital In Mathematics Education, Frances E. Anderson Feb 2023

Mathematics Capital In Mathematics Education, Frances E. Anderson

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This dissertation explores the reimagination of mathematics education through a Bourdieusian perspective. The conceptual framework includes Bourdieu's well-defined terms: capital, field, habitus, and doxa. A thorough review of mathematics education documents finds that mathematics education has not yet considered, mathematics capital, from a Bourdieusian lens. More, examined documents reveal that key variables, mathematics teaching and learning experiences, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics mindset, and cultural capital, interact. In this examination, cultural capital emerges thematically through all texts. Next, six mathematics teachers with dual degrees in mathematics and education are interviewed. Data analysis included a process of inductive and deductive coding. In these, …

The Study Of Followers In Leadership Research: A Systematic And Critical Review, Burak Oc, Kraivin Chintakananda, Michael R. Bashshur, David V. Day

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite the significant amount of existing research examining the relationship of follower-related factors with leadership outcomes, there is no systematic, critical review that integrates and helps leadership scholars make sense of this rapidly growing body of research. To address this gap in the literature, we first briefly discuss the leading perspectives explaining the role of followers in leadership. Next, we identify and discuss the most frequently studied theoretical narratives explaining the relationship between follower-related predictors and leadership outcomes. Because theoretical arguments generally make causal claims, we identify and examine how methodological concerns including power analysis, multicollinearity, and endogeneity might prevent …
