Cultivating Versatility: The Multiple Foundations Of The Law School’S Public Mission, David Sandomierski Mar 2023

Cultivating Versatility: The Multiple Foundations Of The Law School’S Public Mission, David Sandomierski

Dalhousie Law Journal

Law schools should aspire to cultivate versatility. To accomplish this goal, the salient features of the law school should reflect three foundational intellectual pillars: a commitment to the rule of law and legal rationality, an emphasis on multiple legal process, and an appreciation for legal pluralism. Complementing these symbolically “vertical” pillars on which the law school’s activity rests are three transversal virtues that operate “horizontally” to brace the foundations. These include a commitment to critique, context, and diversity. Ultimately, legal educators should concern themselves with how they can best prepare their students for a wide range of contributions to society …

Anchoring Lifeline Criminal Jurisprudence: Making The Leap From Theory To Critical Race-Inspired Jurisprudence, Danardo S. Jones

Dalhousie Law Journal

This article takes as a starting point the claim that anti-Black racism permeates Canadian society and finds expression in our institutions, most notably the criminal justice system. Indeed, anti-Black racism in criminal justice and its impact on Black lives are not credibly in dispute. Thus, what should concern legal scholars is the staying power or permanence of racism. In other words, should Canadian legal scholars ‘get real’ about the intractability of race? Or can anti-Black racism be effectively confronted by developing legal and evidentiary tools designed to fix, rather than dismantle, the current system? Put another way, this article aims …

The Need For Fathers As Role Models To Aid Family And Social Cohesion In Resource-Constrained Contexts, Tolulope Victoria Balogun, Leoba Nyathi, Kezia October, Athandiwe Skhuni, Nicolette V. Roman

Journal of Family Strengths

The impact of parents on their children, especially in the developmental years, must not be undermined. Each parent influences a child separately and in different ways, which may have long-lasting effects on adulthood. Paternal involvement in children’s lives plays a different but crucial role that leads to improved behavioural and psychosocial outcomes. This study identifies and explores the need for fathers as role models to aid family and social cohesion in resource-constrained contexts. Individuals older than 18 years were interviewed from four different communities in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Interviews were conducted in English, Afrikaans, and IsiXhosa …

The main focus was to ascertain whether administrators’ upbringing has a mediating effect on the treatment of students being educated in an urban community. The central question focused on the views and perceptions of building leaders raised in urban, suburban, or rural areas and the impact of their perception of urban students who have experienced trauma. Sub-questions were designed to uncover the relationship between the building administrator’s life experiences and perceptions of disciplinary …

Developing A Community Chaplaincy Ministry: Through A Need Satisfaction Care Model For A Native Language Church, Shanti Samuel

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Believers in Jesus Christ are mandated to "go" into the world, and caring for people is part of the seeking. God has provided models and processes of His care in the scriptures. A chaplain holds spiritual care functions outside the church's four walls on the field. Unfortunately, many Asian Indian Americans in the booming immigrant population have not received care. Therefore, this action research thesis assumes need-based church training to build a culture-sensitive model of care to provide care. This research project explored the causes and impediments to care through participative sessions with the spiritual care provider volunteers of the …

Failed Secular Revolutions: Religious Belief, Competition, And Extremism, Jean-Paul Carvalho, Jared Rubin, Michael Sacks Mar 2023

Failed Secular Revolutions: Religious Belief, Competition, And Extremism, Jean-Paul Carvalho, Jared Rubin, Michael Sacks

ESI Working Papers

All advanced economies have undergone secular revolutions in which religious belief and institutions have been subordinated to secular forms of authority. There are, however, numerous examples of failed secular transitions. To understand these failures, we present a religious club model with endogenous entry and cultural transmission of religious beliefs. A spike in the demand for religious belief, due for example to a negative economic shock, induces a new and more extreme organization to enter the religious market and exploit the dissatisfaction of highly religious types with the religious incumbent. The eect is larger where institutional secularization is more advanced, for …

Finding The Missing Pieces: A Phenomenological Study Of Elementary Teachers' Experiences With Student Suicidality, Dionna Lashawn Doneghy Mar 2023

Finding The Missing Pieces: A Phenomenological Study Of Elementary Teachers' Experiences With Student Suicidality, Dionna Lashawn Doneghy

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore elementary school teachers’ experiences with student suicidality in North Georgia. The first theory guiding this study was the Interpersonal theory of suicide, developed by Thomas Joiner to explain how risk factors of suicide interact to better understand who is most likely to make suicide attempts. Specifically, it proposes that when a sense of social alienation and perceived burdensomeness occur simultaneously, an individual begins to desire death. The second theory guiding this research was the three-step theory of suicide developed by E. David Klonsky and Alexis May. This theory posits that …

To better understand these lived experiences, it is imperative to also examine the experiences of Haitian immigrants from the gateway countries of Brazil, Chile, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. It is known that a number of Haitians have entered the US directly (legally or illegally) and a great many entered by …

Constitutional Patriotism As Europe’S Public Philosophy? On The Responsiveness Of Post-National Law, Paul Linden-Retek Mar 2023

Constitutional Patriotism As Europe’S Public Philosophy? On The Responsiveness Of Post-National Law, Paul Linden-Retek

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 13 in Constitutional Patriotism as Europe’s Public Philosophy? On the Responsiveness of Post-National Law, Jan Komárek, ed.

This chapter critiques Jürgen Habermas’s concept of constitutional patriotism—and its basis in his discourse theory of democracy and law—from the analytic perspective of ‘constitutional imaginaries’, and details the consequences of this critique for the constitutional discourse of the contemporary European judiciary. In the first instance, analysis of constitutional imaginaries reveals the extent to which civic attachment to constitutional law is oriented not merely to legal principles simpliciter but also to the historical settlement of political conflict those principles reflect. This …

Senior Nutrition - Meeting An Essential Minnesota Need, Khunza Asma, David Beimers

The Chesley Center on Aging

Food insecurity and malnutrition are significant public health concerns among older adults. Over the past two decades, the number of older adults in the U.S. who are food insecure has more than doubled (Ziliak & Gunderson, 2022). During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, deaths among older adults due to malnutrition increased in Minnesota (Olson, 2023). Food insecurity among older adults is associated with numerous health issues, isolation, and increased health costs (ACL, 2021).

One prominent strategy to reduce food insecurity among older adults is to directly provide meals to those who may be food insecure. The State of …

Predictive Analysis Of Misuse Of Alcohol And Drugs Using Machine Learning Algorithms: The Case Of Using An Imbalanced Dataset From South Africa, Alexander Boateng, Christopher Odoom, Eric Teye Mensah, Sarah Mensah Fobi, Daniel Maposa

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Drug and alcohol misuse has become a significant global distraction to the development of the youths and future leaders, especially in South Africa. The ideal solution to these unhealthy practices is for institutions, governments, and individuals to put preventive measures such as counselling, sanctions, and fines to help control drug and alcohol misuse. However, it is challenging to know the group of people or individuals engaged in such deteriorating activities by merely monitoring individuals physically. It makes it difficult even to plan the measures to control the issue. Therefore this paper has applied and compared six supervised machine learning algorithms …
