A Quantitative Study Examining The Mental Health Needs Of African American Students Compared To Their Counterparts In Higher Education, Luxury Bryant

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

African American students are entering into higher education institutions at higher rates. This population has specific needs and faces various challenges entering college at predominantly white institutions compared to their counterparts of different races. While college is already a stressful time with academic pressures as well as navigating a new setting, African American students also face unique experiences that can impact their mental health. It has been found that African American students are less likely to seek out mental health services especially those that are attending predominantly White institutions (Anderson, 2018). This study will highlight African American undergraduate students' perceptions …

Education Reform: Exploring Human Services Needed To Address Disparities In Urban, Antonio Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This investigation sought to delve into the complex issues surrounding racial and institutional racism within urban educational frameworks, emphasizing the substantial role that systemic obstacles and prejudices play in perpetuating educational inequities. Amidst an expanding corpus of literature on this topic, the nuanced contributions of human service interventions to ameliorate these inequities have been somewhat overlooked. The objective of this research was to fill this knowledge void by examining the perspectives and experiences of a diverse range of professionals within the K-12 educational sector, from a human services standpoint. The study utilized qualitative research methodology, gathering data through interviews with …

This study aims to examine the perceptions of male and female Emirati students regarding the competency of male and female faculty members in general introductory courses at a higher education institution in Dubai, which follows a policy of segregating undergraduates by sex. Using a purposive research design, the study employs focus-group data to investigate the viewpoints of two groups of first-year undergraduates in Dubai (n = 2,43) on the role of gender in shaping their perceptions of faculty competency. Additionally, the researchers utilized open and axial coding schemes to analyze gender perceptions, revealing distinct patterns and thematic outcomes. The findings …

The Dynamics Of Us Retrenchment In The Middle East, Paul K. Macdonald, Joseph M. Parent May 2024

The Dynamics Of Us Retrenchment In The Middle East, Paul K. Macdonald, Joseph M. Parent

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues that conditions favor American retrenchment from the Middle East because the United States can shift burdens to capable states in the region, there are few areas where US commitments are interdependent, and the local conquest calculus favors defense. Forward military deployments do not positively influence potential threats in the Middle East, and maintaining deployments there will detract from meeting challenges from China. Through comparisons to prior cases of great-power ordinal decline, this article puts America’s modest decline in historical perspective and finds that retrenchment policies will likely have positive consequences.

Closing The Gap: Officer Advanced Education Stem+M (Management), Leon L. Robert Jr., Carl J. Wojtaszek May 2024

Closing The Gap: Officer Advanced Education Stem+M (Management), Leon L. Robert Jr., Carl J. Wojtaszek

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

The Army has made insufficient progress in arming its officers with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and management (STEM+M) knowledge. The contemporary battlefield is faster paced, technologically enabled, and data driven, requiring officers to possess more skills, knowledge, and experience. We examine the Army’s history with STEM education and show that, in terms of education, the current Army officer corps has fallen behind its requirements for technology-enabled forces and modern society. We conclude with recommendations on how the Army can close the STEM+M education gap through advances in higher education and adopting talent management practices.

Insider Research In Migration And Music Sociology: Contextualizing Indigenous And (G)Local Method(Ologie)S In Studying Migrant Musicians, Carljohnson Anacin

The Qualitative Report

Researching migrants in various geographical and social environments necessitates the use of culturally sensitive and contextualized modes of understanding. Migrants’ perspectives, lifeways, and knowledge need to be recognized through proper historical and cultural perspectives. This article discusses the use and potential application of culturally contextualized method(ologie)s in conducting insider research in migration and music sociology, both of which have traditionally been dominated by Western methodologies and scholars. The use of the Filipino method(ologie)s – pakikipagkuwentuhan and pakikilahok – is examined as applied in understanding musical experiences and everydayness of Filipino musicians in Australia. Furthermore, I demonstrate that in such interdisciplinary …

Between Memory And History: Irish Pubs As Sites Of Memory And Invention, Perry Share, Moonyoung Hong

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The pub has been at the centre of Irish culture and identity for at least two centuries, has become a pillar of the Irish tourism “product,” and an export commodity as thousands of themed “Irish pubs” have been established across the world in the last number of decades, supplementing existing establishments that have served the global Irish community. This paper draws on key themes from the diverse material in our upcoming academic volume on the Irish pub, to be published by Cork University Press, later in 2024. The book brings together contributions from scholars of history, sociology, design, literature, culinary …

Traditional Polish Roasted Duck From The "Dino" Supermarket: Politicizing And Negotiating Tradition Through Culinary Competitions For Rural Housewives' Clubs, Yuliia Andriichuk

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The article describes how food practices and narratives associated with tradition can function as a tool for political propaganda. By organizing culinary competitions and festivals, local government offices and state institutions strive to unite potential voters under the common idea of cultivating Polish traditions. A group perfectly suited to this task seems to be Rural Housewives' Clubs, a widespread form of women's association in Poland. Despite the variety of tasks they perform in their villages, they are mainly associated with cooking and broadly understood tradition. Participating in such competitions is not only a good way to mobilize members and promote …

Forbidden Fruit: Mary Cassatt’S Mural Of “Modern Woman” At The World’S Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893, Tricia Cusack

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper considers a large mural of “The Modern Woman” painted in France by the American artist Mary Cassatt for the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. It focuses in particular on the large central panel of the mural titled Young Women Plucking the Fruits of Knowledge or Science that depicts women and girls apple-picking. Cassatt’s mural drew on various traditions and myths. Apple harvesting was a common sight in America. Cassatt’s title though points to the story of Eve and forbidden fruit, in which Eve seeks knowledge, but is severely punished for it. Cassatt …

The relevance of examining late nineteenth-century Cuba depends from its being a colony under two powers, one European and one extra-European: the formal Spanish empire that had the political power and the informal supremacy of the US economic influence. However, within the framework of of enlarging its authority in the American region, the US perceived Cuba as a strategic island that was under the Spanish dominion. For the US expansionistic aims, Cuba has, in fact, been defined as a laboratory for the US empire (Pérez 2008) Through the analysis of newspapers’ articles, images published in the satirical magazine The Puck, …

Examining Dublin City from 1950 to 2000, it explores the places, practices, and engagement of ordinary women with food. Through a comprehensive approach, utilizing online surveys, archival research, and oral history interviews, the study uncovers key events and issues shaping Irish women's relationship with food during this period. It identifies four …

Bittersweet Spirits: Transnational Food Memory And The Persistent Production Of Non-Mainstream Alcohol In Trinidad, Shrinagar Indra Francis May 2024

Bittersweet Spirits: Transnational Food Memory And The Persistent Production Of Non-Mainstream Alcohol In Trinidad, Shrinagar Indra Francis

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Whether we perceive the process of food leaving its mark on our culture as a function of genetic or collective memory, or a combination, informs the ways we interrogate the continued existence of these foods and their practices across time and landscapes. Within the postcolonial context, the process of re-embodiment is an inherently bittersweet one in that it comes as a consequence of loss and rupture and is motivated by a desire to be remade. Prior to colonialism, the production of alcohol was a profound aspect of the lives of the many peoples of West and West-Central Africa. Descendants of …

Chicken Soup And Chopped Liver: Sharing Ashkenazic Jewish Recipes Across Generations, Sascha Goluboff May 2024

Chicken Soup And Chopped Liver: Sharing Ashkenazic Jewish Recipes Across Generations, Sascha Goluboff

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper investigates how my grandmother’s recipes for chicken soup and chopped liver, two Ashkenazic Jewish staples, can be seen as part of a genre of writing in which women “creatively record and inscribe individual lives and situations” (Floyd and Forster 2003, 5). The vernacular details in my grandmother’s culinary instructions reveal how she channelled her self-expression and need for independence into her cooking. The paper explores the premise that the requesting and sharing of recipes is an act of trust between women and discusses what happens to family culinary ties and identity when that trust breaks down.

Cooking In Times Of Oppression, Dorota Koczanowicz

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

In 2017, Marije Vogelzang's interactive performance at the Museum of Rotterdam, 'Black Confectti', was designed to enable the experience of a difficult wartime past. Using authentic recipes from the war press, she prepared dishes based on the creativity of the crisis. In the face of starvation and the struggle for life, the selflessness of creative action in the kitchen and the effort of documentation in the form of recipes from the past and culinary fantasies from the past proved to be a helpful tool for surviving the most oppressive situation. The effectiveness of this strategy is clearly demonstrated not only …

Attitudes Towards Economic Inequality In A Global Perspective: Evidence From The World Value Survey, Francesco Rigoli May 2024

Attitudes Towards Economic Inequality In A Global Perspective: Evidence From The World Value Survey, Francesco Rigoli

Journal of Global Awareness

Scholars have explored the factors responsible for shaping people’s attitudes towards economic inequality. Yet, this research has focused almost exclusively on Western countries. This is an important limitation: only by looking at the different world regions, scholars can fully elucidate the major factors involved. To address this, the paper examines data from the World Value Survey, a database of representative samples drawn from more than one hundred countries. The analyses reveal that people tolerate economic inequalities more when they have higher salary, are better educated, are male, and live in poorer countries. The data also indicate that a country’s level …

Trace, Trauma And Tradition In The Sopranos, Lisa Davies May 2024

Trace, Trauma And Tradition In The Sopranos, Lisa Davies

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper uses gastrocriticism – literary criticism that draws on disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and cultural studies – as a lens to establish the use of food as a symbolic marker of traces, trauma and traditions in the HBO series, The Sopranos. The Sopranos is a story of an Italian-American crime family in which food is uniquely central to the plot: a mob-boss is in therapy due to food-related panic attacks. Food is used in a variety of ways; as a narrative device; as a symbol of greed, power and status; and as a token of ethnic and …

Traces Of Tradition: Exploring The “Food In Olden Times” Theme Within The Irish Folklore Commission Schools’ Collection 1937–39, Caitríona Nic Philibín

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Ireland’s rich folklore archives provide a wealth of insight into the memories of her people. The importance of recording oral history across Ireland in the late 1930’s spurred the Folklore Commission to establish the Schools’ Collection (SC). Essentially, the commission enlisted national school children, within the Irish Free State, to collect the memories of the their relatives and older people within their communities. The culmination of these efforts resulted in over 700,000 documents illuminating Ireland’s traditions, customs and practices. Analysis of the children’s findings reveals exciting local and regional traditions through the words of curious pupils discovering the food memories …

This study involved primary and secondary research in the realm of DEI to develop an implementable model from lessons gleaned from the findings of the research and gaps found in contemporary hiring and staffing practices. The study and model development are grounded in Rawls’s 1971 theory of justice and predicated on the premise that opportunities are usually based on merit, and are generally well-intended, although often constrained by the …

Memories Of Food And (Be)Longing: Secularised Jewish Recipes In Hungary Before 1945, Lili Zách May 2024

Memories Of Food And (Be)Longing: Secularised Jewish Recipes In Hungary Before 1945, Lili Zách

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Although the first Hungarian-language Holocaust cookbook, entitled Recipes for Survival (ed. Szilvia Czingel), was only published in 2013, it brought thus far unknown Hungarian primary sources (secretly hand-written recipe scraps from the Lichtenwörth concentration camp, 1944-1945) and issues (such as fantasising about cooking and recipe writing as survival strategies) into the foreground of Holocaust research as well as food history scholarship. Among others, Louise O. Vasvári (2014 and 2016) and András Koerner (2018) have explored the socio-cultural significance of these Jewish women’s reminiscences within the context of Holocaust Life Writing and Jewish Cuisine, respectively. And while they both highlighted that …

La Centralita Culinary Studio, a small business in Albany, New York I opened in December 2021 with my creative partner Yuri Morejón (from Bilbao, Spain), is dedicated to teaching small groups of people about the cuisines of Spain through private cooking classes, pedagogical tasting experiences, and themed events. As a complement to our respective careers as consultant and professor, we bring our expertise in these areas to each unique event. We started the business after observing a need for contextualized pedagogy about Spain’s diverse cuisines in the US. Specifically, our guests often have negative memories of anchovies and are hesitant …

Digital Technology Affordances Reshaping Entrepreneurship Development Process: A Systematic Review, Emmanuel Okoro Ajah May 2024

Digital Technology Affordances Reshaping Entrepreneurship Development Process: A Systematic Review, Emmanuel Okoro Ajah

The African Journal of Information Systems

Digital technology has brought about the emergence of digital entrepreneurship, which has significantly disrupted existing products and services and the way that they are marketed. This new wave of entrepreneurship has piqued the interest of scholars from various disciplines, including Information Systems. However, in the literature, there are insufficient theoretical explanations of digital technology's role in the processes involved in digital entrepreneurship development. To address this, a systematic review was conducted to comprehensively explore digital technology affordances in digital entrepreneurship development. Such affordances are the factors that cause the digitalization of the events that characterize digital entrepreneurship development. The outcome …

Therefore, creating an urgent need to examine the literature on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in crisis management to appreciate its contextual role. Employing a systematic review, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), this paper critically assessed the extent of the use of ICT in crisis management in Africa’s response to COVID-19 to reconstruct its resilience against future crises. Findings indicate that while countries with limited ICT infrastructure faced considerable challenges in utilizing ICT solutions in COVID-19 management, countries …

Noam Chomsky On Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Contemporary Critique Of The Concept Of Language Privatization, Johanne Randolf Andrada, Brendan Carlos, Dominic Gonzales May 2024

Noam Chomsky On Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Contemporary Critique Of The Concept Of Language Privatization, Johanne Randolf Andrada, Brendan Carlos, Dominic Gonzales

Mabini Review

In contemporary sociological studies, Wittgenstein, in his Philosophical Investigations, contends that the concept of a private language is unattainable due to the inherent necessity of shared meanings and societal conventions within language. Wittgenstein posits that language is intrinsically tied to social norms and communal practices, asserting that the acquisition of language is inseparable from cultural immersion and participation in shared activities – what he terms “playing the game” of language. In contrast, Noam Chomsky challenges this perspective by proposing the existence of a universal grammar innate to humanity, irrespective of factors like race, ethnicity, or demographics. According to Chomsky, while …
