Exploring Medicaid Stigma In Kentucky., Malea Hoepf Young
Exploring Medicaid Stigma In Kentucky., Malea Hoepf Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Health insurance is only one of many factors involved in becoming and staying healthy, but the importance of having coverage in the U.S. cannot be overstated. Medicaid provides health care coverage for millions of Americans, with enrollment increasing dramatically after the Affordable Care Act allowed states to expand eligibility. While there is a great deal of research on the impacts of Medicaid expansion on newly eligible adults, there is little research on negative attitudes towards people using Medicaid, or on Medicaid stigma. This study used qualitative methods to conceptualize stigma around Medicaid through discussions with individuals using Medicaid and enrollment …
Burma Refugees’ Migratory And Resettlement Experiences And Health Practices, Eunice E. Kim
Burma Refugees’ Migratory And Resettlement Experiences And Health Practices, Eunice E. Kim
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Many refugees from Burma (renamed Myanmar) resettled in the U.S. in recent years; however, they are largely unknown to the American public care system. This dissertation aimed to increase understanding of their unique existence and life trajectory and provide a groundwork to identify an effective way to assist their quest to secure health and well-being in their host communities. Guided by Max Weber's Interpretive Sociology and Ideal Type construct principles, this study investigated the Burma refugee’s particular sociodemographic characteristics, narratives of enduring refugee debilitating conditions across multiple contexts, and life adaptations. The sampled Burma refugees comprised 36 former and current …
Evolving Community Preparedness: Analysis Of United States Pandemic Health Disaster Readiness, Jessy Rugeyo
Evolving Community Preparedness: Analysis Of United States Pandemic Health Disaster Readiness, Jessy Rugeyo
Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown substantial gaps in counties' preparedness and response capacity across the United States. This study analyzes the relationship between county-level pandemic preparedness and confirmed COVID-19 cases using secondary data from the FEMA's National Household Survey (NHS) and county-level COVID-19 data from the CDC. The data show a negative relationship between preparedness levels and COVID-19 positive rates, highlighting the necessity of proactive readiness measures. Individual risk assessment, motivation for preparedness, and socioeconomic variables have a major influence on confirmed cases. Higher levels of education, income, and preparedness are associated with lower positive rates, emphasizing the importance of …

The Adaptation Wedge: Capacity-Building Scenarios For India’S Cities, Jagan Shah
The Adaptation Wedge: Capacity-Building Scenarios For India’S Cities, Jagan Shah
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
The increasing frequency and severity of floods, heat waves, and storm surges impacting global cities, combined with the growing morbidity in public health, necessitates prompt and effective climate action. Adaptation and mitigation require adequate and appropriate institutional, technical, and societal capacities—all of which are in short supply in most low- and middle-income country cities that are experiencing growth while suffering vulnerabilities. Although national governments are alerted to climate risk and the imperatives of planning, financing, and managing climate transitions, their responses to capacity constraints and approaches to capacity building display neither urgency nor scale. We use a scenario-building methodology to …
The Decline Of Republican Democracy And Rise Of The Techno-Authoritarian State: Reading Dystopian Novels In Hindi Literature, Manindra Nath Thakur
The Decline Of Republican Democracy And Rise Of The Techno-Authoritarian State: Reading Dystopian Novels In Hindi Literature, Manindra Nath Thakur
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
In the past few decades, the nature of capitalism has changed fast as it has lost its philosophical justification based on the principle of the common good. There have been many avatars of the idea of the “common good”: “white man’s burden to civilize the world,” “welfarism,” and “neoliberal concept of freedom of choice.” Capitalism now seems to have moved in a new direction, however, and it has failed to produce any further philosophical justification for its existence as a mode of production despite generating unprecedented economic inequality. Consequently, there is a rising tension between capitalism and democracy in societies …
Economic Development In Legacy Cities: Current And Emerging Challenges And Opportunities, Neil Reid, Sujata Shetty, Jane Adade
Economic Development In Legacy Cities: Current And Emerging Challenges And Opportunities, Neil Reid, Sujata Shetty, Jane Adade
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
As manufacturing employment has declined in the traditional manufacturing regions over the past decades, many communities have experienced population loss and overall economic decline. Local economic development professionals have had to grapple with long-term structural changes in the economy as well as short-term jolts. To gain insights into the changing landscape of economic development, we interviewed economic development practitioners in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The interviews focused on their perception of current and emerging challenges and opportunities with respect to economic development in their respective communities. Having identified the major challenges and opportunities, we asked them to articulate the …
Displacement, Social Justice, And The Right To The City: A Review And Critical Reflections In The 21st Century, Tara Fitzgerald, Brij Maharaj
Displacement, Social Justice, And The Right To The City: A Review And Critical Reflections In The 21st Century, Tara Fitzgerald, Brij Maharaj
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
This paper aims to review the literature and themes relating to displacement, social justice, and the right to the city in the 21st century. Displacement, in its various forms, is central to understanding the human rights abuses and livelihood implications when urban rights are revoked, forcing inhabitants to the periphery, and is the focus of this paper. Whereas the city’s services, resources, and opportunities should be a collective right advanced by local authorities for all who occupy urban space, displacements lead to resettlement and impoverishment, especially as livelihoods are disrupted. Urban renewal, through mega-projects, clean-up campaigns, and speculative gentrification processes, …

Activities Eligibility: Building A More Equitable Approach To Support Students, Cory Holten
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the researcher analyzed the impact of traditional cocurricular activityeligibility practices on minoritized students, students with disabilities, and students receiving free and reduced lunches. The researcher issued a survey to staff members at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead, Minnesota to gain an understanding of the perceived impact of participation in cocurricular activities and the impact and observed disparities existing as a result of traditional eligibility practices. As a result of the findings, the researcher proposes an alternative approach focused on identifying lagging skills through the collection of student data related to academic achievement, attendance, and behavior. Instead of …
Examining Barriers And Motivation Toward University Stem Faculty Research Success, Jordan A. Jaeger
Examining Barriers And Motivation Toward University Stem Faculty Research Success, Jordan A. Jaeger
Theses and Dissertations
All university faculty pursuing scholarly goals tackle complex tasks over long periods, yet some must overcome additional adversity and challenges to succeed. Recent studies have measured faculty research success according to their self-reported accomplishments in research activities, publications, and grant writing, and motivation was a predictor of success (Stupnisky, BrckaLorenz, et al., 2019; Stupnisky et al., 2023). This dissertation describes a three-study program of research that examined how faculty navigated barriers to research success through the lens of different theories of motivation.Faculty face barriers in completing research because it often involves a lengthy and emotion filled process, from research design …
Linking Risk Preference, Women’S Empowerment, Farm Investment And Household Well-Being, Samuel Olusesi Olumide
Linking Risk Preference, Women’S Empowerment, Farm Investment And Household Well-Being, Samuel Olusesi Olumide
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A nuanced understanding of intra-household dynamics can inform the design of more effective empowerment and agricultural investment policies. By integrating household risk preferences and empowerment dynamics, this work offers valuable insights into the complex mechanisms driving household welfare and provides a framework for future interventions to promote gender equality and economic development in rural settings. This thesis addresses three core hypotheses: first, that the spouses of risk-seeking male heads are more likely to be disempowered compared to those of risk-averse male heads; second, that households with risk-seeking male heads and disempowered spouses are likely to invest more in farming activities; …
Essays On Education And Labor Market Outcomes, Ishita Ahmed
Essays On Education And Labor Market Outcomes, Ishita Ahmed
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation focuses on the labor market or educational outcomes using applied microeconomic methods. Chapter 1 investigates the impact of waiting an additional year to start kindergarten on the socioeconomic achievement gap in Nebraska using longitudinal administrative data from the Nebraska Department of Education. I utilize fuzzy regression discontinuity design to find the effect of waiting on test scores. I find waiting a year to improve the test score, and this impact fades away over time. This fading pattern shows a considerable amount of heterogeneity across different demographic groups, suggesting an acceleration of the achievement gap. The study also investigates …

Providing safe and informed healthcare for sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals with cancer is stymied by the lack of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data reliably available in health records and by insufficient training for staff. Approaches that support institutional learning, especially around sensitive topics, are essential for hospitals seeking to improve practices impacting patient safety and research. We engineered annual institutional retreats to identify and unify stakeholders, promote awareness of gaps and needs, identify initiatives, minimize redundant projects, and coordinate efforts that promote improvements in SGM cancer care, education, and research. The 2022 and 2023 retreats employed …
Marriage Of Heaven, Marriage Of Hell: The Marital Relationship In Asian American Poems, John J. Han
Marriage Of Heaven, Marriage Of Hell: The Marital Relationship In Asian American Poems, John J. Han
KAUPA Letters
This paper discusses the marital relationship among Asian Americans, a sociological issue that has not received much critical attention, by examining spousal love or lack thereof in four Asian American poems by Yone Noguchi (1875-1947), Li-Young Lee (b. 1957), Ronald Phillip Tanaka (1944-2007), and Marilyn Chin (b. 1955), respectively. Across cultures, love and hate are two elements that exist in most marriages, yet the four poems discussed in this paper reveal something significant about Asian thought and culture.

A Nuremberg Woman And The Hague Academy, Diane Marie Amann
Scholarly Works
This article, which forms part of the journal's special review series marking the centenary of the Hague Academy of International Law, draws from the author's ongoing research into the roles that lawyers and other women professionals played at post-World War II trials. The article focuses on the life of one “Nuremberg woman,” Dr. Aline Chalufour, who attended the Academy in 1937 and again in 1957. In between, she worked in what is now Vietnam as a colonial schoolteacher, in Canada as a Free French propagandist for de Gaulle, at Nuremberg and Hamburg as a war crimes prosecutor, and in France …
Hard Truths About Soft Ip, Amanda Levendowski
Hard Truths About Soft Ip, Amanda Levendowski
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
People routinely refer to copyright and trademark as “soft IP” to distinguish these practices from another area of intellectual property: patent. But the term reflects implicit biases against copyright and trademark doctrine and practioners. “Soft IP” implies that patent law alone is hard, even though patents are no more physically, metaphorically or intellectually hard than copyrights and trademarks. Despite stereotypes to the contrary, patents are not necessarily more practically hard: while the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office requires technical training for patent prosecutors, which excludes many women and people of color, no such experience is necessary for most patent litigators …
Spaces Of Progress And The Challenge Of “Mindfulness” In A Postcolonial World, M. Satish Kumar
Spaces Of Progress And The Challenge Of “Mindfulness” In A Postcolonial World, M. Satish Kumar
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
Progress implied both change and improvement in the colonial and postcolonial world. Such a concept of progress came to be enshrined in specific geographical places. The notions of development and underdevelopment in the postcolonial context thereafter supplanted this idea. Over time, while the structures of colonial domination dissolved, those of embedded regional inequalities came to be deeply entrenched, thereby urging for Thich Nhat Hanh’s approach to “mindfulness” in a “postcapitalist,” postcolonial world. The key question is whether postcolonialism has reached an impasse in its delivery and deployment of ideas across the widening gulf between the spaces of progress and stagnancy. …
Notes On The Future Possibilities Of Engaged Anthropological Research: Why Decolonizing Anthropology Needs Black Diasporic Feminist Theory And Methodologies, Meryleen Mena
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
While in the past decade there have been more ethnographic accounts that shed light on minoritized stories and demystify the specific challenges that women and femmes experience during their research, much is desired to prepare students and junior scholars from marginalized identities for fieldwork research. Reflecting on a moment of precarity in the context of pre-impeachment São Paulo, I explain why the integration of Black diasporic feminist thought, method, and praxis is critical to further decolonizing efforts in anthropology. Beyond reflection, this narrative calls for sustained politically active engagement to establish an anthropology of liberation.
Erasing The Dividing Line Between Race And The Protestant Church: A Phenomenological Comparative Research Study, Janee M. Slade
Erasing The Dividing Line Between Race And The Protestant Church: A Phenomenological Comparative Research Study, Janee M. Slade
Education Doctoral
This comparative phenomenological study researched how church leaders impact race relations in emerging multicultural Protestant churches, by analyzing the lived experiences of church members in multicultural churches. This study explored the strategies pastors use to manage race relations through the lens of transformational leadership theory. This comparative study compares the experiences of church members in an urban and suburban church setting. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at two multicultural churches in the Rochester, NY area. The first location included a suburban multicultural church setting with at least 50-75 members. The second location was a larger, more established congregation in an urban …

Communicating Character: Ceo-Expressed Humility, Stakeholder Protest Activism, And Organizational Misconduct, Guadalupe J. Solano
Communicating Character: Ceo-Expressed Humility, Stakeholder Protest Activism, And Organizational Misconduct, Guadalupe J. Solano
Theses and Dissertations
In an era characterized by self-promotion, individualism, and the pursuit of self-interest, the virtue of humility appears to be in decline, with far-reaching implications for contemporary organizations and overall social cohesion. The corporate landscape, in particular, has not been immune to this trend, as leaders who prioritize humility are becoming increasingly scarce (Heimann, 2021). Within the realm of business and, more specifically, leadership, the scarcity of humility can create a fertile ground for organizational misconduct to flourish, as it may reduce accountability and foster an unethical climate. Additionally, when misconduct is exposed, the perceived lack of humility in leadership can …
Moral Disengagement And The Tendency To Engage In Academic Dishonesty In Prelicensure Nursing Students, Sarah Guimaraes
Moral Disengagement And The Tendency To Engage In Academic Dishonesty In Prelicensure Nursing Students, Sarah Guimaraes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite decades of research, academic dishonesty remains a significant concern in nursing education. The connection of academic dishonesty to dishonest clinical practice presents a moral imperative for nurse researchers to find new facets of understanding these phenomena. Literature regarding moral disengagement in health care is minimal and is even less prevalent in the context of nursing education. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of moral disengagement on prelicensure nursing students’ tendencies to engage in academic dishonesty in their last or next to last semester of a nursing program. A correlational design via survey method was used. …
The Impacts Of Gender Minority Stress On Wellness Among Trans And Gender Diverse Adults, Nathan R. Landers
The Impacts Of Gender Minority Stress On Wellness Among Trans And Gender Diverse Adults, Nathan R. Landers
Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of gender minority stress and its connection with wellness among trans and gender diverse adults. Trans and gender diverse (TGD) individuals experience unique and pervasive stress due to living within a society that is hostile towards their gender identities. They are also more than their experiences of gender minority stress. Better understanding TGD wellness is crucial for both researchers and counseling psychologists as a means of holistically viewing TGD communities. The present study examined the impacts that gender minority stress had on the overall wellness among a sample of …
Secondary Choir Students’ Perceptions Of Inter-District Collaborative Performance Experiences, Juliet Minard
Secondary Choir Students’ Perceptions Of Inter-District Collaborative Performance Experiences, Juliet Minard
Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to examine the way students perceive their inter-district collaborative off-campus choral performance experience. That purpose allowed me to empower students' voices as I interpreted why students took part in optional collaborative opportunities off-campus, what they took away from the experience, and how they described the individual and collective significance of their engagement with a new population of peers. Observations, semi-structured interviews, artifact collection in the form of concert programs, song literature, and other student-initiated material, and researcher memos were gathered and analyzed to answer the following research questions: Q1 What are students' perspectives …
The Reallocation Effects Of Domestic Outsourcing, Mayara Felix, Michael B. Wong
The Reallocation Effects Of Domestic Outsourcing, Mayara Felix, Michael B. Wong
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper estimates the wage, employment, and reallocation effects of non-core activity outsourcing using Brazil’s unexpected 1993 court-ordered outsourcing legalization. We leverage North-South variation in pre-legalization court permissiveness and compare security guards to less affected occupations. We find that older incumbent security guards were adversely impacted through occupational layoffs, loss of firm-level wage premia, and exit from the occupation. At the same time, increased numbers of younger workers entered the formal sector and became employed at contract firms. On net, legalization increased guard employment by 5%, led by a 50% increase in employment for guards aged 18-24, and had no …

An Emerging Voice In United States Literature: 19th-Century Poetry In Los Angeles, Savannah Salazar
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The 19th century was a time when British and American literatures
flourished greatly. This period is a favorite among students of English
studies and it has produced works that instill a great sense of pride in
British and American readers. However, in the realm of American
literature, there exists an entire body of literature that has been forgotten
to time and archived away. 19th-century Los Angeles was occupied by
Spanish-language newspapers that produced a body of poetry that has
rarely been researched or discussed.
This thesis will be close-reading poetry from 19th-century Angeleno
newspapers, such …

In 2011, NATO ended the 42-year-long rule of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi, and plunged the country into over a decade of unending strife, while an arc of crisis emanating from Libya struck much of the region. This study examines the United States' geostrategic approach in the Libyan intervention to illustrate the dialectic intersectional relationships between processes of globalization, American hegemony over the world-system, and American foreign policy in the post-Cold War period (1992-2024) with consideration to world-systems analysis to characterize the United States post-Iraq warfighting strategy in Libya as an adaptation of the purposeful destabilization of Afghanistan and cultivation of an …
