For myself, art has been a way to explore my Chicanx realism a la Cheri Moraga. There are so many conflicting emotions I have experienced as a mestiza indigenous brown individual living on the borderlands. I have lived with much rage, having survived the colorism within my own family, the racism from both lands of the North and South, and the identity crisis that comes with learning to accept myself as de-tribalized and indigenous in a country which refuses to accept that we are natives and not immigrants.
My contribution to this issue is a painting for the issue’s cover …

The purpose of this article is to critically examine the story of the number 41 as a queer signifier in Mexican culture from a decolonial perspective, taking into account archival records in the development of hegemonic masculinity in the 20th century. An examination of hegemonic masculinity and homophobia of early 20th century Mexico is provided by reviewing colonial accounts of indigenous sexuality, as well as uncovering the hidden stories of the corrido/ballad of El Baile de los 41 Maricones. The corrido was used as satire to ridicule the homosexual practices by the bourgeoisie, creating a rift between social classes, and …

Granite Guide To Early Childhood: Introduction To New Hampshire’S Child Care Sector, Evan England, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
The early care and education (ECE) sector in New Hampshire is a complex ecosystem that must account for families’ needs and resources, the capacity and availability of the workforce, and the costs of providing services. This ecosystem is also bolstered (and constrained) by local, state, and federal policy. This series of primers, titled the Granite Guide to Early Childhood, synthesizes the widely disaggregated scholarship on child care in New Hampshire and compiles this work into an unprecedented accessible collection. These primers aim to provide a vital understanding of key factors involved in developing a high-quality, affordable, and equitable ECE …
Gnotobiotic Mouse Models For Characterizing The Role Of The Microbiota On Undernutrition And Early Postnatal Brain Development, Alexandra Elizabeth Byrne
Gnotobiotic Mouse Models For Characterizing The Role Of The Microbiota On Undernutrition And Early Postnatal Brain Development, Alexandra Elizabeth Byrne
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Undernutrition is a serious global health challenge; it accounts for nearly half of all mortality for children under the age of 5. Worse, undernutrition is compounded by intergenerational inheritance and can be transmitted from mother to offspring. The burden of undernutrition is unequally distributed around the world, with South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for almost 60% of the global childhood stunting. Undernutrition is detrimental to many aspects of development, including long-term deficits in neurodevelopment, and current interventions rarely ameliorate long-term cognitive and motor deficits. Therefore, other causes of undernutrition need to be elucidated in order to treat this epidemic …

Improving Access To Care For Uninsured Patients In Texas Outpatient Clinics: Achieving Patient-Centered Care, Stephanie Ann Greenwood
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Uninsured patients encounter major barriers to accessing healthcare, leading to delayed or missed medical care, higher rates of chronic conditions, and increased financial and psychological stress. The purpose of this integrative review study was to examine the factors that affect Texas residents who lack insurance and require access to healthcare services in outpatient community clinics. The review question was used to explore strategies to improve access to healthcare and strengthen patient-centered care for uninsured patients in Texas outpatient health clinics. A thorough integrative review was completed using empirical and nonempirical literature published between 2019 and 2024. The results of the …
How Belief In God Impacts Marital Conflict And Resolution For Women Of Faith, Elizabeth Kay Madsen
How Belief In God Impacts Marital Conflict And Resolution For Women Of Faith, Elizabeth Kay Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
Frequent conflict is a significant relationship risk factor for divorce, but it has also been shown that religion strengthens marriages, specifically in ways that give direction and motivation for couples in resolving marital conflict or other marital hardships. Thus, a study of how successful religious couples resolve conflict is pertinent in helping us better understand how to strengthen marriages and families. Our qualitative study of 113 highly religious women of diverse faiths and races found that women's perceived relationship or connection with God reportedly impacted conflict resolution and coping with marital hardship. Results suggest greater reconciliation and unity with the …

Berre: “Nombre, pinche Americana, no sabe!” And I didn’t know, because it had taken a long time not to be mad at not being able to pronounce words properly or using my translanguaging skills to create words in Spanish. Playing with cousins in Mexico was fun but challenging. They weren’t always the kindest or showed compassion. It was I who was living in the U.S. after all. The expectation was not to speak Spanglish. The idea that Spanish should be pure and learned properly kept being yelled at me when I didn’t understand the double-meanings and certain humor.

Past And Present Of The Cvs: Empirical Research And Evidence-Based Policy, Kevin T. Wolff

In this keynote address, I emphasized the critical role of accurate crime measurement in developing evidence-based policies. I discussed the "dark figure of crime," highlighting how many crimes go unreported, and stressed the importance of victimization surveys in uncovering these hidden crimes to provide a more complete picture of criminal activity.
I also explored how technological advancements, particularly AI, are transforming how we collect and analyze crime data. While AI offers significant benefits in predictive policing and resource allocation, I cautioned about the risks of bias and privacy issues that must be managed carefully.
Regional collaboration, standardization, and inclusivity are …
Three Rival Versions Of Physical Education: A Macintyrean Analysis Of The Field, Clayton Michael Whalen
Three Rival Versions Of Physical Education: A Macintyrean Analysis Of The Field, Clayton Michael Whalen
Theses and Dissertations
At both the theoretical and applied levels of analysis, the field of physical education is all too often completely incoherent. There appears to be little agreement as to how school-based programs ought to be implemented or what the goals of such programs really are. No two physical educators run their programs exactly the same and, chances are, those physical educators likely have wildly different understandings of their field and its proper place within the education of our youth. Borrowing from the title of moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s (1990) book, Three Rival Versions of Moral Enquiry, I’ve chosen to describe the …

Alight, The Dead Of Night: Ascertaining The Collection And Use Of Nighttime Site Inventory In Landscape Architecture Professional Practice, Jacob Zachary Felkins
Theses and Dissertations
In landscape architecture, site inventory is a common precursor and perpetual informant of site design, toolkit development, and best management practices. Within inventory-specific texts, inventory is primarily geared, collected, and applied toward the daytime, and thusly, one might consider the bulk of inventory to be “daytime inventory” which pays greater heed to a diurnal humanity and lesser heed to the nocturnal world. With a greater attention to nighttime site conditions, we explored “nighttime inventory” through a series of primary considerations - nighttime lighting, light pollution, site ecology, and the night sky – along with several secondary considerations. We then surveyed …
That The Parliament Should Be In Harmony With The Nation: The Whig Party, National Self- Determination, And Parliamentary Reform, 1790-1830, J.D. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Between 1790 and 1830 the Whig party in Britain championed the rights of continental European peoples to determine their governments free of outside interference. The universal right to national self-determination became an important part of their own domestic, partisan effort to oppose the ministries of William Pitt the younger and his acolytes—ministries which they believed were undermining the independency of the House of Commons by allying Britain with the despotic governments of the continent in their war against the French Revolution. By casting the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France as an attack against the right to national self-determination, the …

Unraveling The Evolution Of Moral Panic: A Comparative Analysis Of School Shootings, Jiavonna Devine Webb
Theses and Dissertations
School shootings in the United States have garnered significant attention. Since 1999, several high-profile school shootings have taken place across the U.S. in Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, etc. The phenomenon of school shootings and the resultant moral panic is explored by examining media coverage to understand how the media contributes to public responses to these tragic incidents. Although school shootings tend to receive attention, we do not know how this attention can differ across school shootings. This study uses the moral panic framework to assess how national newspaper coverage portrays the Sandy Hook Elementary and Robb Elementary school shootings. I find …
Mississippi Mud: Race, Agriculture, And Disharmony In The Era Of Civil Rights, Kymara D. Sneed
Mississippi Mud: Race, Agriculture, And Disharmony In The Era Of Civil Rights, Kymara D. Sneed
Theses and Dissertations
Federal interference in the battle for states’ rights in Mississippi during the 1950s and 60s birthed a civil rights movement that made the Department of Agriculture its main opposition. Alongside state-sanctioned organizations like the Citizens’ Council and the Sovereignty Commission, the USDA used their resources to deter civil rights groups, black farmers, and black agents alike from protesting against segregationist policies. Mississippi Mud uses agriculture as a lens to illustrate how the USDA’s refusal to denounce Jim Crow, especially after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, led to black farmers and extension agents pursuing legal action against the …
Evaluating Depictions Of Representation: An Analysis Of Female Law Enforcement Officers In Prime-Time Fictional Entertainment Television, Linda Christine Williams
Evaluating Depictions Of Representation: An Analysis Of Female Law Enforcement Officers In Prime-Time Fictional Entertainment Television, Linda Christine Williams
Theses and Dissertations
This study looked at uniformed female municipal police officers in fictional entertainment television shows that were centered around law enforcement. Building on previous research by Evans and Davies, this replication study uses a content analysis model to look at city level police, as opposed to the female federal agents from Booker’s 2018 study. This project builds on earlier work that looked at portrayals of female law enforcement officers in entertainment television and applies a framework of Representative Bureaucracy, Cultivation Theory, and Social Construction of Reality to find at their intersection, answers about the construction of the street-level bureaucrats who are …
Living With Mamaw And Pawpaw: Examining The Impact Of Context When Raising One’S Grandchildren, Rachel K. Scott
Living With Mamaw And Pawpaw: Examining The Impact Of Context When Raising One’S Grandchildren, Rachel K. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
The parenting literature has long explored the influence that socioeconomic status has on parenting practices, but more recent theorists have suggested that contextual factors may influence or explain this relation in some capacity. The current study sought to explore the influence of these contextual factors within a nationwide sample of caregiving grandparents. The results indicate that grandparental financial well-being, depressive symptoms, scarcity of resources, and grandparenting practices share significant associations. Further, contextual factors (i.e., grandparental depressive symptoms and access to resources) mediate the relation between financial well-being and both the positive and negative grandparenting practices that are employed. These findings …
Longitudinal Influences Of Parental Relationships On Positive Adolescent Functioning, Rebekah Buckley Sparks
Longitudinal Influences Of Parental Relationships On Positive Adolescent Functioning, Rebekah Buckley Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the longitudinal influences of parental relationships – romantic, co-parenting, and parent-child – on positive adolescent functioning. Utilizing data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this study investigates how various dimensions of parental relationships impact adolescent well-being at age 15, as measured by the EPOCH scale. Grounded in Attachment Theory and the Life Course Perspective, this research highlights the interconnectedness of early parental interactions and their long-term effects on adolescents’ emotional and social development. Key findings indicate that supportive and stable parental relationships significantly enhance adolescents’ engagement, perseverance, optimism, connectedness, and happiness. The study emphasizes …

Hardwood Seedling Establishment And Survival For Restoring And Enriching Bottomland Hardwoods In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Timothy Jaycob Gatlin
Theses and Dissertations
Degradation and deforestation have taken their toll on bottomland hardwood forests in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV). To combat this, many managers, both public and private, have sought silvicultural techniques to ensure future generations have the benefits bottomland hardwoods provide. In the first study of this thesis, artificial regeneration and chemical thinning were implemented to evaluate the effects of these treatments on restoration and enrichment of bottomland hardwoods. Very high mortality rates were seen across all species and sites likely due to improper handling and planting, drought, and competition. The second study explored the feasibility of transplanting bottomland oaks …
Is Tax-Funded Education Unconstitutional?, Jeffrey C. Tuomala
Is Tax-Funded Education Unconstitutional?, Jeffrey C. Tuomala
Liberty University Law Review
This Article explains why tax-funded education is an unconstitutional establishment of religion in violation of the First Amendment. It analyzes the worldview that sustains the educational establishment and informs Supreme Court jurisprudence—a worldview that falsely bifurcates reality between the secular and the religious.
The Supreme Court has never given serious attention to defining the term religion as used in the First Amendment religion clauses. During the Virginia establishment controversy that culminated in 1786, Virginia provided a definition of religion and identified the fundamental principles on which religious liberty is based. That definition and those principles contrast with the subjective definition …
Adhd And Chronic Anhedonia: Antecedents Of Treatment-Resistant Depression And Suicidality In Adults, Tia Sternat
Adhd And Chronic Anhedonia: Antecedents Of Treatment-Resistant Depression And Suicidality In Adults, Tia Sternat
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a chronic and debilitating disorder. Approximately 280 million people live with depression, and more than 700,000 lives are lost due to suicide each year. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a severe form of depression which is highly correlated with comorbid psychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and associated with increased suicidality. Anhedonia, the reduced ability to experience pleasure, is associated with various psychiatric conditions, including ADHD. The theoretical framework for this study was the biopsychosocial model. Depression may be diagnosed in accordance with a defined cluster of symptoms, and/or how symptoms are experienced vary by individuals …
Our Bodies, Our Choices: Reproductive Justice And Social Embodiment, Charles Olney
Our Bodies, Our Choices: Reproductive Justice And Social Embodiment, Charles Olney
Political Science Faculty Publications
Feminist scholars of reproductive justice argue for a broader model of politics organised around embodied experience. But to fully express the intersectional politics of reproductive justice, more attention must be given to the social function of embodiment—the ways that bodily markers create associative communities among strangers. This shared form of embodiment establishes connections that exceed the intimate relationship of a specific pregnancy. In particular, foetal embodiment manifests via communities with vested interest in the social meaning of life. These communities are affected, albeit indirectly, by reproductive choices and are therefore valid subjects of concern for reproductive justice. I develop the …

Relationship Between Student Physical Therapist Pain Knowledge, Beliefs, And Self-Efficacy Assessing And Treating Pain, Ryan Morgan Reed
Relationship Between Student Physical Therapist Pain Knowledge, Beliefs, And Self-Efficacy Assessing And Treating Pain, Ryan Morgan Reed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that affects a large percentage of the population. According to recent studies, chronic pain management is best treated using a biopsychosocial (BPS) non-pharmacological approach rather than a biomedical (BM) approach. Student Physical Therapists (SPTs) trained in a BPS approach have different beliefs about pain than those trained in the BM approach. Beliefs about pain are related to pain knowledge and self-efficacy for treating pain patients. To date, no study has examined these three variables together or explored differences in BM versus BPS beliefs in relationship to the other two variables. Guided by social cognitive …
What Do New Hampshire Families Want For Child Care?, Rebecca Glauber, Jess Carson
What Do New Hampshire Families Want For Child Care?, Rebecca Glauber, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
Most New Hampshire families with young children need child care, although both use and preference vary. In this primer, authors Rebecca Glauber and Jess Carson describe the complexity of families’ child care decision making, shaped by preference and the reality of available offerings. Evidence suggests that family priorities differ, but reliable arrangements are key for most. The need for a diverse mix of accessible options and an emphasis on reliability are true for families outside of New Hampshire as well.
Strategies For Addressing Substance Abuse And Gambling Among Youth, Kevin T. Wolff
Strategies For Addressing Substance Abuse And Gambling Among Youth, Kevin T. Wolff
Publications and Research
This keynote address opens with a description of recent trends in substance use and gambling among youth, sharing insights from relevant research. I highlight that while some global trends indicate a decline in adolescent substance use, other areas, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, have seen increases. I emphasize the importance of comprehensive prevention strategies, such as school-based, community-based, and family-based programs, and effective treatment approaches like behavioral interventions and integrated mental health services.
On the topic of youth gambling, I highlight the rising normalization and accessibility of gambling, particularly through the internet. I describe specific challenges in regions like South …

Roots Of Turmoil: Exploring The Causes Behind Fano Force's Struggle Against Abiy Ahmed's Administration, Agenagn Dagnew Mr
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The struggle between Abiy's administration and the Fano had led to other-round chaos and violence in the Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia, after the conflict between the Tigray People Liberation Front’s (TPLF) and the federal government of Ethiopia took place from 2020 to 2022. In regard to this, the researcher explored the causes that resulted in Fano's struggle with Abiy Ahmed's administration. The research design was an exploratory case study. Document review, audio-visual sources, and a semi-structured interview were employed to look into the reasons for Fano Force's conflict with Abiy’s administration. The Oromo nationalist movement attacks on Amhara, the …

Strategic Governance To “Silence The Guns” In Africa: Urban Sub-Saharan African Perceptions On War's Root Causes., Peter Tresor Miyalou, Chun Yan Hu
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
Despite the African Union’s campaign to silence the guns in Africa by 2020 (STGIA 2020), many African countries are suffering from wars and political instability, the primary causes of underdevelopment in Africa. This paper examines the roots causes of wars in Africa and provide a strategic governance to silence the guns beyond 2020. To accomplish this, we gathered data from 169 questionnaire responses administered across 25 African countries, to capture African people’s perceptions on the root causes of wars and whether employing strategic governance would help silence the guns in these countries. The results showed that political power struggle (47.9%), …

Media Role In Conflict Resolution And Peaceful Coexistence In Indigenous Communities, Eric Msughter Aondover, Timothy Ekeledirichukwu Onyejelem, Sabiu Garba
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
Conflicts between farmers and herdsmen in the use of agricultural land are becoming fiercer and increasingly widespread in Nigeria, largely due to ‘intensification and extensification’ of production activities that are necessitated by increasing human population. The media in this context have become a highly prized strategic resource to all social groups, especially indigenous communities in a conflict situation. Within this context, this paper examines the role of the mass media in conflict resolution and promoting peaceful coexistence in indigenous communities. Secondary data were obtained through a critical review of related literature and documents. The paper adopts the Cultural Theory of …

Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming (Tgnc) Leaders And Leadership, Galen J. Talis
Libraries
The author presents highlights from a paper accepted at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting. A 12-minute videorecording is also available.
Gender and leadership research has traditionally employed a binary framework, overlooking the experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) leaders and forcing leaders of all genders and intersectional identities into a dichotomous frame. This paper reviewed interdisciplinary literature using a robust search strategy in three academic databases and Google Scholar, as well as across eight leadership studies journals. Sixteen sources involving 440 leaders’ experiences were found. The author conducted a thematic analysis to explore how TGNC leaders’ experiences challenge …
The Status Of Abortion Care Training For Medical Providers Amidst The Current Abortion Access Crisis: A Literature Review, Leah Johnson
The Status Of Abortion Care Training For Medical Providers Amidst The Current Abortion Access Crisis: A Literature Review, Leah Johnson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: While a common, safe, and essential aspect of reproductive healthcare, abortions have been subject to countless legal restrictions and bans in the United States, especially after the overturn of Roe v. Wade. This has also exacerbated the current shortage of abortion providers. Within this crisis of worsening abortion access, it is imperative to appropriately train future clinicians to provide abortion care. Purpose: This literature review will investigate the status of abortion training in medical schooling. It will explore physician-specific education in abortion and look specifically at the impact of recent legal threats on the availability of this training. Finally, …
