Cudos To The Teachers: Using Merton’S Norms Of Scientific Practice To Guide Lessons In Critical Thinking, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon
Cudos To The Teachers: Using Merton’S Norms Of Scientific Practice To Guide Lessons In Critical Thinking, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon
Department of Communication Faculty Publications
Professors are often exhorted to foster an atmosphere in critical thinking in their classes, and there is a wide variety of lessons and activities that college students can be given in order to keep their questioning spirit alive. In this paper, the researcher sets critical thinking against the framework of Merton’s Norms of scientific practice. Robert Merton’s work has been used in the philosophy and sociology of science as a way to discuss what constitutes a scientific culture. The norms are summarized in the acronym CUDOs: Communalism (scientific knowledge is open to all), Universalism (that the practice of science is …
Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett
Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett
The Qualitative Report
Understanding the philosophical underpinnings behind phenomenological research is critical for pursuing a proper qualitative study on one’s lived experiences. Larsen and Adu’s The Theoretical Framework in Phenomenological Research: Development and Application succeeds in breaking down the theoretical viewpoints and methodology of phenomenology and delivering it in a manageable way for researchers and practitioners alike. While novices may find the complexity of the theoretical content comparing Edward Husserl’s transcendental approach and Heidegger’s hermeneutic Dasein framework to be daunting, the book does lend itself as an instructional tool that offers easy-to-follow guidelines for those at any experience level interested in pursuing a …
Co-Design To Evaluate The Impact Of Gender Equality Initiatives: Lessons For Practitioners, Evaluators And Researchers, Helen Taylor, Sue Williamson
Co-Design To Evaluate The Impact Of Gender Equality Initiatives: Lessons For Practitioners, Evaluators And Researchers, Helen Taylor, Sue Williamson
The Qualitative Report
Achieving gender equality is an ongoing challenge in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) disciplines in universities globally, including in Australia, where our study was located. As institutions that deliver research and teaching in STEMM, universities have committed to a range of initiatives and programs to address this challenge. The Athena Swan Institutional Award is one such program, operating as an accreditation process that measures progress towards gender equality, and is reliant on demonstrating impact. The work required to meet accreditation standards is extensive. Very little academic literature has advanced qualitative methodology suited to delivering the evaluation of gender …
World In Crises: Towards Qualitative Interviewing Through Existential Questions, Sona Balasanyan, Hasmik Gevorgyan
World In Crises: Towards Qualitative Interviewing Through Existential Questions, Sona Balasanyan, Hasmik Gevorgyan
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative interviewing is a widely applied method of data collection in social sciences. Over time, continual diversification of this method led to more multi-modal and participant-centered qualitative research paradigms. This methodological article examines the role of qualitative interviews within the context of the psychosocial approach and its application in understanding interview experiences in critical life situations. Accounting for research ethics and embracing existential questions, qualitative interviewing gains added value in understanding and responding to interviewees who face crises. Drawing on various methodological approaches, including oral history, biographical, feminist, phenomenological, and cross-cultural, this study explores how interviewing evolves into a complex …

How Do Doctoral Students Perceive Supervision? Lessons Learned From Indonesia, Elok Putri Nimasari, Syihabul Irfan, Ariyanti Ariyanti, Ahmad Iklil Saifulloh
The Qualitative Report
Theorised in Vygotskyan sociocultural and Bakhtinian dialogical perspectives, this article addresses Indonesian postgraduates’ perceptions of their doctoral supervision for their thesis proposal. Twelve Indonesian doctoral students participated in this interpretative phenomenology study. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews lasting eight months. Drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis, the findings identified four micro themes of sociocultural and dialogical theory (i.e., shared expertise, critical dialogue, constructive feedback, and encouraging diverse perspectives). The present study contributed empirical evidence on how doctoral students benefit from their supervisory process in sociocultural and dialogical perspectives embedded with different supervisory dimensions.

The Use Of Space And Place In The Civil Rights Discourse Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Pamelia Adams
Communication Theses
This thesis, The Use of Space and Place in the Civil Rights Discourse of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., analyzes the academic literature on the social change agent. The study provides a deeper understanding of the relevance of place/location, where Dr. King delivered his civil rights message nationally and internationally. Three historically significant sites and the events impacting the civil rights movement, in the cities of Washington, D.C. and Birmingham, Alabama, are examined. The three sites included in Chapter 2: The Jail Site, Chapter 3: The Bombing Site, and Chapter 4: The March Sites as examples. The main findings of …
The Ghost In The Text: Metaphorical Hauntings As Inquiry Into Social Injustices In Arctic Literature, Delcenia Cosman
The Ghost In The Text: Metaphorical Hauntings As Inquiry Into Social Injustices In Arctic Literature, Delcenia Cosman
English
Since the Golden Age of Arctic exploration, the Arctic has been habitually situated as a place in which the supernatural can thrive. Arctic-based ghost stories possess a particular environmental flavor and, focusing on specific traumas created by late-stage capitalism and extractive colonialism, reveal crimes that have been buried, with the ghost returning to demand retribution. Beyond the traditional revenant, ghostly behavior may also be attributed to living people or nonhuman objects that work to uncover hidden crimes and gain justice or revenge. Broadening the scope of what can be defined as a ghost to include metaphorical modes of haunting allows …

Alaska Basketball: Leadership On The Court And Success Beyond The Game, Kelly Jo Mccormick
Alaska Basketball: Leadership On The Court And Success Beyond The Game, Kelly Jo Mccormick
Indigenous Studies
The importance of extra-curricular basketball programs in Alaska provokes diametrically opposed viewpoints. Some parents and school officials believe basketball advances students’ overall educational experiences, while others believe it detracts from them. In response, the parents and officials do provide programs but enact eligibility requirements and policies to regulate who can participate and how they do. Should students settle by simply doing just enough to remain eligible for a high school basketball season, or should the goal be to aim for a higher return on the investment of participating in high school sports? As coaches, teachers, parents and boosters, is lowering …

Role Overload And Perceived Stress In U.S. Police Officers: A Replication Study, Michelle A. Hanna Collins
Role Overload And Perceived Stress In U.S. Police Officers: A Replication Study, Michelle A. Hanna Collins
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The current study sought to replicate a prior study (Duxbury & Halinski, 2018), conducted with Canadian police officers, to further explore the generalizability of their theoretical model of work- and family-role overload as sources of stress for male and female police officers in the United States. The Canadian study supported the proposed relationships between work-role overload, including four antecedents (Competing Demands, Outside Work of One’s Mandate, Non-supportive Culture, Employed Hours Worked), family-role overload (Dependent Care Hours), and police officer stress. A total of 357 United States law enforcement officers participated in the present study. A multivariate analysis was conducted utilizing …

Companion Dogs And Depression, Anxiety, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Adult Icu Survivors: A Scoping Review, Lindsey Nelson, Sue Lasiter, Amanda Emerson
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Intensive care unit (ICU) survivors are at risk for developing persistent psychological sequelae that have been linked to decreased quality of life and increased mortality after hospital discharge. Standardized evidence-based treatments are lacking, mainly focus on physical rather than psychological recovery, and often occur in formal settings. Benefits of human– companion dog relationships have not been explored in the ICU survivor population before. Thus, the purposes of our review were to summarize the literature focused on the influence of companion dogs on depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); identify what is known about the potential role companion dogs play …
Thoughts On The Architecture Of Freedom Of Religion And Freedom Of Speech, Perry Dane
Thoughts On The Architecture Of Freedom Of Religion And Freedom Of Speech, Perry Dane
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
This symposium was convened to explore the rights of businesses and employees to invoke freedom of religion or freedom of expression to resist certain forms of state regulation. The most immediate occasions for that discussion, at least for my purposes, are cases such as 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, in which the Supreme Court upheld the right of a website designer to refuse to design a wedding website for a same-sex couple. These sorts of cases, which pit the religious or expressive rights of conscientious believers against the equality rights of others, have proliferated in recent years.
I have …

Role Of Misogynous Rap Music On African American Married Millennials, Louisa Antwanett Parker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study explored the influence of misogynistic rap music on self-image and objectification within the context of African American married millennials. Grounded in exposure theory and objectification theory, the study adopted a quantitative nonexperimental design. Data were collected from a sample of 101 participants while exploring how exposure to misogynistic music might shape individuals' self-perceptions and views of their partners, potentially contributing to adverse relationship outcomes such as domestic violence and infidelity. The survey instruments encompassed the Exposure Measurement Scale, Self-Objectification Scale (SOS), Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBSC), Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS), Self-Image Scale (SIS-D), Music Preference Questionnaire (MPQ-R), and …
Unpacking The Relationship Between Legitimacy, Procedural Justice, Identity, And Desistance, Qassim Bolaji
Unpacking The Relationship Between Legitimacy, Procedural Justice, Identity, And Desistance, Qassim Bolaji
Theses and Dissertations
Knowing why people stop offending over time and the criminal justice agencies' role in this process is essential for designing effective crime control interventions. Legal authorities have the core function of ensuring that social norms and laws are obeyed. However, the coercive and punitive tactics that police, judicial, and penal authorities typically resort to have been shown to have only limited impact on controlling and preventing crime while having the unintended consequence of worsening the public's perception of their institutional legitimacy. Specific to policing, the use of coercive policing tactics and their perceived ineffectiveness has, in recent decades, led to …
School Counselors’ Perceptions Of And Recommendations For Increased Parent Involvement In Student Assistance Program Referrals, Joanna Harrington-Diorio
School Counselors’ Perceptions Of And Recommendations For Increased Parent Involvement In Student Assistance Program Referrals, Joanna Harrington-Diorio
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parent refusal of Student Assistance Program (SAP) referrals limits their child’s access to critical behavioral and mental support services offered by the school district, which may put the child at risk academically, socially, and emotionally. In a county in an eastern state, the problem that was addressed in this study was that students were not receiving the recommended professional services through the SAP. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore school counselors’ perspectives about practices being used to educate and encourage parent involvement in SAP referrals. Using Epstein’s school–family–community partnership model as the conceptual framework, the perspectives …
In The Search Of Cosmopolitan Literacies: A Case Of Formerly Expatriated Language Teacher, Asiye Demir
In The Search Of Cosmopolitan Literacies: A Case Of Formerly Expatriated Language Teacher, Asiye Demir
Theses and Dissertations
Cosmopolitanism refers to becoming a world citizen who can live harmoniously with different cultures. Today, our classes in the United States have become diverse daily. While we teach students who can speak more than one language, our teachers are primarily monolingual and monocultural. Hence, teachers who can speak multiple languages are celebrated in the system (Pacheco et al., 2019). Expatriation refers to teacher mobility that can entail learning other languages and being exposed to different cultures. Expatriation, as a form of travel, is an essential construct for cosmopolitan literacies because cosmopolitan dispositions can be developed through traveling (Molz, 2006). Thus, …

Developing A Curriculum For An Online Group Piano In The Philippines: An Ideological, Historical, And Practical Approach, Lady Abigail Imperio
Theses and Dissertations
Online distance learning, a modern educational practice, has permeated music pedagogy in the past several decades. It involves synthesizing interdisciplinary studies in philosophy, music, technology, and sociology. In this study, the integrated approach aims to develop a unique curriculum for an online group piano in the Philippine setting. This goal involves coalescing ideological, historical, and practical perspectives to develop a coherent, learner-centered approach.
The ideological approach surveys educational philosophies, music learning theories, cooperative learning theories, online learning theories, and socio-cultural perspectives relevant to forming a unique framework. The nature of online distance music learning itself presents complex challenges of international …
The Importance Of Sense Of Community In Recovery For Individuals Living With Serious Mental Illness, Natalia Gomez
The Importance Of Sense Of Community In Recovery For Individuals Living With Serious Mental Illness, Natalia Gomez
Theses and Dissertations
People with serious mental illness face a variety of barriers to participating in community life. Some of these barriers include limits in social functioning which can then affect social relationships and life satisfaction (Sanchez et al, 2016). Devaluation based on mental health status is an important barrier to address due to its connection to stigma and relationships. The more an individual fears that they will be undervalued and discriminated against, the more they may fear interacting with others. They may hide that they are in mental health treatment or avoid social encounters that they consider as possibly rejecting. These behaviors …
"The Voice Of The Universe": Cosmic Immanence In John Elof Boodin’S Process Thought, What It Is And Why It Matters, Michael A. Flannery
"The Voice Of The Universe": Cosmic Immanence In John Elof Boodin’S Process Thought, What It Is And Why It Matters, Michael A. Flannery
Libraries Professional Work
For most, the way to process thought has been through mathematician-turned-philosopher Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947). However, his contemporary, Swedish–American philosopher John Elof Boodin (1869–1950), offers another path. While both clearly exposit a process-based philosophy/theology, there are important differences. The main purpose of this essay is to delineate those differences and highlight Boodin’s concept of cosmic immanence (CI) as a key feature separating him from Whitehead’s metaphysic. It is argued that CI can provide the heavy lifting for developing a coherent and satisfying process theology without the baggage attached to Whitehead’s difficult intricate interconnections and enigmatic neologisms. In other words, Boodin’s …

The Impact Of An Integrative Stem Educational Approach On Wonder Within A Catholic School, Carrie Kavanaugh Brun
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study explored the challenge of evoking wonder among fourth graders within one Catholic School, using an integrative STEM educational approach. Cognitive constructivism, social constructivism, and situated learning theory guided this qualitative case study. Twenty-one students learned about the Fibonacci sequence and Golden Ratio while engaging in nature walks, group work, and journaling. Students were tasked with creating a 3D design, utilizing the Engineering Design Process. Qualitative data were generated through student journals, practitioner reflective notes, and classroom observations and videos. Analysis and interpretation of the data indicated that (a) nature evokes wonder, (b) students create learning through …
Black Mph Internship Experiences In Racialized Organizations: Critical Counter-Narratives For A More Racially Just Public Health Workforce, Zach Jenkins
Theses and Dissertations
Internships are a vital component of Master of Public Health (MPH) programs. Despite 14% of MPH students identifying as Black, limited research has examined their internship experiences. This is particularly troubling given the racial demographics of the public health workforce and the racialized nature of most public health organizations. Using critical race theory (CRT) as a theoretical framework and critical counter-narrative as a methodology, this study sought to answer the following research questions: 1) How do Black MPH students describe their racialized experiences in their internships? and 2) What are the implications of Black MPH students’ narratives for policies and …
Evaluating Gender Bias In An Early Reading Screener Of Word Identification Abilities, Donna Perazzo
Evaluating Gender Bias In An Early Reading Screener Of Word Identification Abilities, Donna Perazzo
Theses and Dissertations
Children who have difficulty learning to read, particularly those with a specific learning disorder in reading (SLD-R) are at risk for an array of adverse outcomes. However, children who are identified and receive reading interventions early perform better on social, emotional, academic, and behavioral outcomes relative to those who do not receive early identification and intervention. In response to the growing body of research that has developed on the importance of the early identification of children have difficulty reading, many states have mandated the screening of all children for reading difficulties, specifically dyslexia. However, with the development of new reading …
Serial Minimalism, Feminism, And Queer Identity In Selected Piano Works Of Ann Southam, Elizabeth Churchya
Serial Minimalism, Feminism, And Queer Identity In Selected Piano Works Of Ann Southam, Elizabeth Churchya
Theses and Dissertations
In her late period of solo piano composition, Canadian composer Ann Southam (1937–2010) developed her own signature postminimalist style combining the static consonance of minimalism with the disruptive instability of twelve-tone serialism. This study analyzes three selected solo piano works in this compositional style: Slow Music: Meditations on a Twelve Tone Row (1979), Qualities of Consonance (1998) and Simple Lines of Enquiry (2007), illustrating how Southam develops a twelve-tone row through minimalist techniques. Additionally, the present study interprets salient structural, harmonic, and temporal elements through the context of gender and sexuality. An outspoken feminist, Southam considered her use of minimalist …

An Emic Conceptualization Of Veteran, “You're Either One Of Two Things; You're Captain America Or You're Broken”, Steven Wahle
Theses and Dissertations
The Global War on Terror (GWOT) conflicts have been sustained by an all-volunteer force for over 20 years. There have been no drafts, war bond drives, nor rationing. This is a departure from previous prolonged military conflicts in U.S. history. Volunteers with veteran status are often venerated publicly to express gratitude for their voluntary military service. However, the criterion for veteran status is inconsistent.
In the U.S., former military members tend to be regarded on one of two ends of a spectrum as archetypes in attempts to honor such service. On one end is the veteran hero veteran to be …

The Gendered Patterns Of International Migration Systems: The Role Of Need For Care, Chang-Yi Lin
The Gendered Patterns Of International Migration Systems: The Role Of Need For Care, Chang-Yi Lin
Theses and Dissertations
The demand for feminized jobs in developed countries—e.g., care, domestic, and entertainment work—has provided women with an opportunity to work abroad independently. However, while numerous studies have discussed gendered opportunities and barriers to women’s migration, few studies have examined these correlates globally. According to traditional gender norms, one such potential barrier is women’s childcare responsibilities at home and, more specifically, the number of children who need to be cared for. Here it is argued that, contrary to men, the higher the number of children who need to be cared for in a given country, the more difficult it would be …
