Fieldnote 19: Intersection Of Mindfulness And Writing, Venus Evans-Winters Dr. Sep 2024

Fieldnote 19: Intersection Of Mindfulness And Writing, Venus Evans-Winters Dr.

Fieldnotes of a Black Woman Scholar: Research, Culture, and Wellness

Recently, in our culture, there has been an overemphasis on writing for public consumption and profit. Academic writing privileges content that addresses "somebody else's problem" instead of writing for personal growth and imagination. This trend can overshadow the profoundly transformative potential of writing when it's approached as a tool for personal healing and authentic relationship building. Mindfulness awareness allows us to write from a place of authenticity and presence. As we observe our thoughts and emotions, we gain insights into our true selves, much like how staying present in the moment helps us navigate life's complexities. Dr. Venus Evans-Winters shares …

Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler Sep 2024

Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler

The Qualitative Report

Researchers have explored neurodiversity in terms of gender, gender identity and expression, masking, and more, yet the focus is often on neurodiversity as synonymous with autism. There remains a challenge to expand the body of neurodiversity research that is broader than autism. In my article, neurodiversity will be discussed as an element of the broad human condition, rather than a singular state or condition of impairment isolated to a portion of the population to delineate the paradigm based on neurological variations from medical and social models. This paper was designed to offer a “how to” for conducting research into neurodiversity …

Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada Sep 2024

Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada

The Gettysburg Journal for Public Policy

When it comes to the topic of universal healthcare, most of us will readily agree that healthcare is a human right. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of who should be granted this right, and if it should be left to the free market to determine access and affordability. Specifically, the political debate on expanding healthcare access to undocumented immigrants in the United States revolve around concerns over costs, legality, and equity. Proponents maintain that it is a human right whereas opponents question the potential burden on taxpayers and the implication for immigration policy. The HEAL …

Test Optional Admissions: A Case Study On Access And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Higher Education, Lori M. Kemmet Sep 2024

Test Optional Admissions: A Case Study On Access And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Higher Education, Lori M. Kemmet

Student Theses and Dissertations

It is commonly accepted that primary and secondary education help maintain social and economic stability, but there is also consensus that postsecondary education contributes to social and economic mobility. While there have been improved enrollment numbers among minoritized and low socioeconomic populations over time, there is still disproportionate underrepresentation among Black, Latino(a), Native American, and less economically privileged students in higher education, the disparity is ever more apparent when considering university degree completion rates among these underserved groups. Although test-optional admissions were implemented due to the inability of high school students to take the SAT or ACT during the COVID-19 …

This study examines the perceptions of women in ICT regarding the hybrid work model in South Africa's telecommunications sector, a shift accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The research explores both the benefits—such as flexibility, financial savings, and improved work-life balance—and the challenges, including communication difficulties, collaboration issues, and infrastructural problems like power outages. Using a qualitative, interpretive approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 11 participants from 8 JSE-listed telecom companies. The key finding is that while the hybrid model is generally viewed favourably for supporting career development, the findings underscore the need for well-structured policies to ensure effective …

Perceived Organizational Support On Blended Learning, And Job Performance Of Women Academics Post Covid Pandemic., Hazel Mubango, Hlanganipai Ngirande, Khathutshelo Khashane K, Sam Jnr Takavarasha

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

The pandemic's impact on education in Africa, particularly Southern Africa, has been quite severe. This has led to a strong desire to create new educational solutions in response to the crisis. As a result, universities embraced blended learning, leading to a decrease in face-to-face teaching and learning but guaranteeing continuity in learning. Organizational support for women academics is imperative for the effective implementation of blended learning. Due to traditional gender norms, working women continue to bear the primary responsibility of childcare, often facing significantly greater demands on their time and energy than their male counterparts. The purpose of this study …

Media Framing Of Transportation, Agriculture, And Gasoline In The Russia-Ukraine War, Sk Farhan Rabbi Sep 2024

Media Framing Of Transportation, Agriculture, And Gasoline In The Russia-Ukraine War, Sk Farhan Rabbi

Student Theses and Dissertations

The war between Russia and Ukraine has the potential to exacerbate social and economic effects on a worldwide scale, impacting several industries including energy, transportation, and agriculture crisis. Due to their heavy reliance on imports of key foods, the Middle East and North Africa are the most susceptible countries. The COVID-19 epidemic increased worldwide demand, and bad harvests all occurred at the same time as the conflict, further pressuring the food supply, transportation, and gasoline costs. Previous studies identified three categories: countries with diminishing fuel security, those making little advancements, and Latvia, which has undertaken noteworthy initiatives. Sanctions against Russia …

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study intervenes in a growing scholarly dialogue about neoliberalism in social work and social welfare by addressing the undertheorized concept of resistance. We conduct a scoping review of 54 articles published from 2008–2023 to answer two questions: how is resistance discussed in relation to neoliberalism, and what are the practice elements of resistance? Findings highlight resistance as a diverse phenomenon enacted in relation to context-specific manifestations of neoliberalism. A range of actors engage in resistance, including individual practitioners, social service organizations and collective action entities, among others. Resistance occurs across all scales of practice and takes many forms, from …

Returnees’ Perspectives Of The Adverse Impact Of Forced Displacement On Children, Itunu O. Ilesanmi, Jasmine D. Haynes, Florence O. Ogundimu

Faculty Publications

Conflict-related forced displacement, characterized by the experiences of witnessing violent acts, bombing, torture, separation, and the execution of family members, can severely and negatively impact a child’s social determinants of health (SDOH). These experiences are both direct and indirect forms of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and urgent attention is needed to understand the impact of forced displacement on children, who are a vulnerable group, and to develop interventions for all systems that influence the child. This phenomenological qualitative study involved in-depth interviews based on the experiences of returnees (n = 20), who are parents of children who experienced forced displacement. …

A Breadth Review Of Digital Landscape And Related Foundational Theories, Jie Gao Fowler, Amy Watson

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The dominating information technology of the present time is digital media. Platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok encourage new types of connection, influencing friendships, family and peer groups, and business relationships while reshaping public involvement and discourse through influencers, memes, and viral media. However, algorithms dictate how social media is consumed, as well as the influence these platforms can have on individuals and society. As a result, the primary goal of this study is to investigate the impact of social media/artificial intelligence on society. This study examines the digital media ecosystem and its interaction with today's customers in depth. Furthermore, …

An Analysis Of The “Curriculum” Of The Naspa National Conference, Robert Flores, Lisa Kubicki, Cynthia Mowry, Jeremy Stringer, Jenne Vanderbout Sep 2024

An Analysis Of The “Curriculum” Of The Naspa National Conference, Robert Flores, Lisa Kubicki, Cynthia Mowry, Jeremy Stringer, Jenne Vanderbout

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

A team of conference participant observers studied the "curriculum" of the 2001 NASPA National Conference. The team assessed the extent to which different subgroups of conference attendees sensed the presence of a conference "curriculum." The team also studied subgroups' perceptions of whether the learning outcomes of the perceived curriculum for the conference were addressed during the conference, and the reasons why participants chose to attend the conference.

Only a relatively small percentage of conference participants surveyed perceived that the conference had a discrete "curriculum." Various subgroups perceived the presence of the learning outcomes for the conference differently. "Professional development" was …
