Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt Oct 2024

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt

Theses

This project aims to develop an inclusive art history curriculum as a high school level course, addressing the traditional Western-centric focus that has been marginalized non-Western contributions. By pairing Western and non-Western artworks within a chronological framework, students can compare artistic expressions across cultures, emphasizing parallel histories rather than a single Eurocentric narrative. The curriculum employs diverse interpretive methodologies to foster critical thinking and challenge conventional narrative. Designed for a 20-week semester, it focuses on a smaller number of key artworks per unit to encourage meaningful engagement and projects. While still rooted in Western art, the course connects global artistic …

The Uncertain Future Of Restorative Justice: Anti-Woke Legislation, Retrenchment And Politics Of The Right, Thalia González, Mara Schiff

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

As diverse forms of anti-democratic and anti-inclusionary politics escalate in the United States, public education is increasingly a site for retrenchment and contestation with targeted efforts to silence and erase civil rights victories for equity and access. Addressing a critical, yet unattended issue at the intersection of education law and policy and civil rights, this Article joins with the growing discourse interrogating the “parental rights” movement and racially regressive legislation. Employing a case study analysis of social movement activism and education policy legislation from 2018–2023 in Florida, it aims to provoke critical praxis emanating from essential inquiry— what is the …

Learning In Lockdown: Assessing The Impact Of Online Legal Education On The Development Of Professional Competencies And Identity, Adrien Habermacher, Sulaimon Giwa

Dalhousie Law Journal

We administered a survey to law students at three Canadian law schools in the Atlantic region at the end of the Fall 2020 term. The survey asked students to compare their learning of each of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC)-mandated competencies, as well as several others taken from the Law Society of New Brunswick (LSNB) competency profile, in the Fall 2020 (online) term versus previous terms of study. The survey also solicited testimonies on students’ socialization into the legal community during their unexpected online law school experience. Our data sheds lights on which competencies, among those deemed …

Narratives Unbound: The Role Of Queer Transformative Works In Shaping Legal And Cultural Landscapes, Morgan E. Spencer

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Queer transformative works promote social justice in marginalized queer communities by offering much-needed representation and visibility. These works fill an essential gap in a societal storytelling canon historically bereft of such material. Notwithstanding this societal benefit, these works pose complex legal and ethical challenges at the crossroads of copyright protections and creative expression. This Note examines the cultural significance and social benefits of queer transformative works in combination with an analysis of the legal landscape and ethical considerations that such works must navigate to maintain a harmonious existence with the original works that inspired them. A more nuanced understanding of …

Using Statistics In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz Oct 2024

Using Statistics In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz

Great Commission Research Journal

Although the proper use of statistics is challenging for most people, including researchers, aggregated numeric data is often the strongest evidence that a researcher can present to support an idea. This is because statistics is such a powerful tool for detecting trends that can be observed in complex contexts such as churches. Church researchers need to understand two classes of statistics: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics describe the different variables that are measured in a study and include the mean, the standard deviation, and confidence intervals. They also include correlations showing how these variables are related to each …

Federal Aid To Women And Children: The Children’S Bureau, The Social Security Act, And Political Development Victories And Failures, K. S. Sullivan, Carol Nackenoff Oct 2024

Federal Aid To Women And Children: The Children’S Bureau, The Social Security Act, And Political Development Victories And Failures, K. S. Sullivan, Carol Nackenoff

Political Science Faculty Works

The Social Security Act of 1935 and its 1939 amendments included federal programs for maternal and infant welfare, child welfare services, and Aid to Dependent Children (ADC). Inclusion of these programs is largely owing to women reformers’ long advocacy for public assistance to families in need. The Social Security Act nationalized aspects of the program championed by the Children’s Bureau, itself a product of women’s civic organization and institution building. These advances laid the ground for crucial components of the contemporary American welfare state, which included surveillance and intrusion into the lives of ADC families and the perpetuation of a …

Cross-National Variations In Scientific Ethics: Exploring Ethical Perspectives Among Scientists In China, The Us, And The Uk, Di Di, Elaine Howard Ecklund

Sociology

This research explores the perspectives of academic physicists from three national contexts concerning their roles and responsibilities within the realm of science. Using a dataset comprised of 211 interviews with scientists working in China, the United States, and the United Kingdom, the study seeks to explain whether and in what manner physicists conceptualize scientific ethics within a global or national framework. The empirical findings bring to light disparities across nations in the physicists’ perceptions of what constitutes responsible mentorship and engagement in public service. These cross-national variations underscore the moral agency of physicists as they navigate the ethical standards embraced …

Sex Differences In Metabolic Adaptation In Infants With Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease, Tina O Findley, Ana Carolina Palei, Kyung Serk Cho, Zhongming Zhao, Caleb Shi, Gouri Mahajan, Antonio Francesco Corno, Jorge Salazar, Louise Mccullough Oct 2024

Sex Differences In Metabolic Adaptation In Infants With Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease, Tina O Findley, Ana Carolina Palei, Kyung Serk Cho, Zhongming Zhao, Caleb Shi, Gouri Mahajan, Antonio Francesco Corno, Jorge Salazar, Louise Mccullough

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Female infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) face significantly higher postoperative mortality rates after adjusting for cardiac complexity. Sex differences in metabolic adaptation to cardiac stressors may be an early contributor to cardiac dysfunction. In adult diseases, hypoxic/ischemic cardiomyocytes undergo a cardioprotective metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis which appears to be regulated in a sexually dimorphic manner. We hypothesize sex differences in cardiac metabolism are present in cyanotic CHD and detectable as early as the infant period.

METHODS: RNA sequencing was performed on blood samples (cyanotic CHD cases, n = 11; controls, n = 11) and analyzed …

Student Resources And Retention Among Transgender And Nonbinary College Students, Miriam Liss, Talyn Derflinger, Laura Wilson Oct 2024

Student Resources And Retention Among Transgender And Nonbinary College Students, Miriam Liss, Talyn Derflinger, Laura Wilson

Psychological Science Articles

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) college students are more likely to drop out of college than their cisgender peers. While robust previous literature has focused on individually experienced stressors, this paper looks at the structural supports offered by the institution. One hundred and fifty-four TNB college students were asked about the resources available on their campuses, their sense of safety on campus, and whether they intended to drop out of college. Campus resources and supports were associated with a greater sense of safety, and in turn, less of a desire to drop out of college. Some resources such as a nondiscrimination …

Honoring The Other: The Imago Dei As A Foundational Doctrine For How The Church Treats The Marginalized, Brett A. Desper Oct 2024

Honoring The Other: The Imago Dei As A Foundational Doctrine For How The Church Treats The Marginalized, Brett A. Desper

Doctor of Ministry

The church struggles to minister to those on the margins of society, frequently dehumanizing those it ministers to. This dissertation argues that a starting point for addressing this issue is a renewal of the imago Dei doctrine as the foundation of what it means to be human. Chapter One defines the problem by referring to two primary problem areas: poverty and displaced people. A definition of poverty is offered, and four primary approaches to alleviate poverty are examined. Causes and definitions of displacement of people from their homes are offered, and some current relief methods are evaluated. Finally, a fundamental …

Ur’S Witness Oak Project Honors Enslaved Ancestors, W. John Hayden Oct 2024

Ur’S Witness Oak Project Honors Enslaved Ancestors, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

This article is about one tree and one cemetery plot. Though the existence of some may have been forgotten, many more burial grounds for the enslaved are known and some of these may still have trees old enough to have “witnessed” the interments of those who toiled so hard, for so long. What better way to remember their contributions to the land that continues to nourish us than by maintaining a living legacy of Witness Tree progeny?

Self-Efficacy And Student Support Programs Impact On Campus Experiences: A Study Of First-Generation College Students, Maggie Cinto Oct 2024

Self-Efficacy And Student Support Programs Impact On Campus Experiences: A Study Of First-Generation College Students, Maggie Cinto

Dissertations (1934 -)

ABSTRACT SELF-EFFICACY AND STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS IMPACT ON CAMPUS EXPERIENCES: A STUDY OF FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS First-generation college students’ degree attainment is far below their continuing generation peers (Whitely et al., 2018). This study aims to offer institutions of higher education better insight into how to provide support to be more effective in retaining first-generation college students. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study examines how first-generation sophomores and juniors with low and high self-efficacy who are either participating in or not participating in formal student support programming experience different institutional interactions meant to support them while at their institution. Quantitative …

Aspirational Mexican American Parenting In The Rural South: Multilingualism, Hard Work, And The Middle Class, Alma D. Stevenson, Scott Beck Oct 2024

Aspirational Mexican American Parenting In The Rural South: Multilingualism, Hard Work, And The Middle Class, Alma D. Stevenson, Scott Beck

The Rural Educator

This study examined the parenting choices of Mexican-heritage former child migrant farmworkers who are now financially stable and raising their own children in the rural South. The study yielded multiple significant findings using data collected during semi-structured, bilingual focus groups and analyzed through grounded theory coding. The participants spoke of painful childhood memories of how their poverty and biculturalism left them isolated. Now, as adults, they have sought middle-class belonging for themselves and their children. They described their “pedagogies of the home” as seeking to preserve their linguistic heritage, teach the value of hard work, and facilitate their children’s upward …

Using Catholic Social Thought And The Normativity Of The Future In Responding To The Super Wicked Problem Of Climate Change, Stephanie Ann Yu Puen Oct 2024

Using Catholic Social Thought And The Normativity Of The Future In Responding To The Super Wicked Problem Of Climate Change, Stephanie Ann Yu Puen

Theology Department Faculty Publications

The climate crisis has been dubbed a “super wicked problem”—one where there is a sense of urgency, complicity in the problem by those who wish to solve it, and difficulty in sacrificing the short term for the long term. To respond to the difficulty of long-term thinking in addressing super wicked problems as part of SDG 13 (Climate Action), there is a need to pay attention to the narratives, norms, and values at work, and how we employ these categories in climate action. This paper discusses how Catholic social thought and the concept of the normativity of the future can …

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are trusted sources of information for vaccination and their attitude toward vaccination is thus critical. We aimed to synthesize existing literature on healthcare workers’ HPV vaccine confidence and their practices of recommending this vaccine. We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis, with the search conducted last in March 2024. For the inclusion criteria, the studies needed to include healthcare worker practices or behaviors on recommending the HPV vaccination. Seventy-three articles were included. The proportions of HCWs recommending varied considerably by region and gender of the recipient, but there was no statistically significant difference in income level …

Negara Hukum Kesejahteraan Di Batas Pantai: Paradoks Perlindungan Negara Terhadap Masyarakat Pesisir Di Tengah Perubahan Iklim, Aji Baskoro

Jurnal Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial

Climate change poses significant challenges to vulnerable coastal communities in Indonesia. As a welfare state, the Indonesian government is expected to safeguard these vulnerable groups through policies that promote their welfare and sustainable livelihoods. However, current policies create a paradox. This article explores this paradox: on the one hand, Indonesia adheres to the welfare state principle, which demands that all government actions be grounded in law, ensuring public safety and welfare. On the other hand, the policies focus on exploiting natural resources, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of coastal communities, particularly in the face of climate change. The article employs a normative …

The Operation Of The Holy Spirit In Pastoral Counseling And Chaplaincy, Elizabeth Canfield Oct 2024

The Operation Of The Holy Spirit In Pastoral Counseling And Chaplaincy, Elizabeth Canfield

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

The operation of the Holy Spirit in pastoral counseling and chaplaincy is a topic that is difficult to quantify. How and where the Holy Spirit moves is often a mystery. This dissertation seeks to understand the movement of the Holy Spirit in pastoral counseling and chaplaincy in the form of a theological and literature review looking into the history of soul care/pastoral counseling and the development of chaplaincy. It also looks at who the Holy Spirit is, how the Spirit operates, and develops a theology of the Holy Spirit within pastoral counseling and chaplaincy with a focus on spiritual gifts. …

How The Settler State Continues To Dispossess: Infrastructural (Dis)Entitlement On The Critical Minerals Frontier, Dayna Nadine Scott Oct 2024

How The Settler State Continues To Dispossess: Infrastructural (Dis)Entitlement On The Critical Minerals Frontier, Dayna Nadine Scott

All Papers

The scramble for critical minerals to fuel the energy transition is driving new extractive frontiers across the globe. In Ontario’s far north, settler state authorities and extractive firms are engaged in coordinated tactics to gain ground amidst a growing polarization in positions of Indigenous leadership. There is both a surging resistance to, and a resigned acceptance of, critical minerals mining by First Nations. Drawing on years of community-engaged research, I detail here the contemporary state tactics of infrastructural (dis)entitlement; infrastructural needs are both denied and fulfilled to differential effect. Infrastructural disentitlement is passive; it is not necessarily deliberate, nor is …

The Privacy Fallacy: Harm And Power In The Information Economy By Ignacio Cofone, Christopher D'Souza Oct 2024

The Privacy Fallacy: Harm And Power In The Information Economy By Ignacio Cofone, Christopher D'Souza

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

‘‘Our privacy is besieged by tech companies,”1 laments Ignacio Cofone, Law Professor and privacy aficionado, in The Privacy Fallacy: Harm and Power in the Information Economy. In an enlightening yet harrowing discourse, Cofone draws on insights from behavioural science, sociology, and economics2 to argue that the widespread consent-based model of privacy is not only outdated, but untenable given modern data practices.3 Further, Cofone acknowledges the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in data processing, leading to novel challenges for the safeguarding of personal information.4 Thus, The Privacy Fallacy is more than just about privacy law’s shortcomings; it also raises questions …
