Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan

LSU Master's Theses

The present thesis explores the intensification strategies employed by bilingual Spanish-English speakers in Southern Arizona, focusing on six distinct devices: lexical, phrasal, repetition, reformulation, hyperbole, and code-switching. While previous research has largely centered on adverbial and lexical intensifiers in monolingual contexts, this study broadens the scope by examining how bilingual speakers leverage their unique linguistic repertoire to amplify their speech. Using a sociopragmatic framework, the analysis reveals a marked preference for lexical intensification, which accounts for more than half of the recorded instances, with phrasal intensification and repetition following closely. Despite its lower frequency, code-switching stands out as a particularly …

A Christian Vision Of Freedom And Discovery: Neutrality As An Obstacle To Freedom, Karen Jordan

Tennessee Journal of Law and Policy

This article presents the underlying vision for the argument that principles of liberal neutrality pose a genuine obstacle to freedom in democratic society. There is a growing concern that liberty and justice are unattainable in modern democratic societies that are grounded in neutrality, including the United States. Experience has demonstrated significant shortcomings of the modern freedom movements grounded in political theories, which—along with the theory of neutrality—reject the need for core substantive values to guide law and policy. The underlying basis of such theories is a particular modern conception of freedom. But a well-grounded and reasoned alternative vision of human …

The Necessary Opportunism Of The Common Law First Amendment, Chris Stangl

Tennessee Journal of Law and Policy

The First Amendment historically has been interpreted to provide greater and greater protection to more and more forms of expression. The notion of an originalist First Amendment has never commanded a majority of the Supreme Court and is unlikely to do so. Instead the development of the First Amendment has followed a common law trajectory. As the reach of its protections expands, so to do its attractiveness for arguments that may be more accurately located elsewhere in the Constitution's text. Such opportunism is a predictable, even necessary consequence of the First Amendment's common law development, and the Supreme Court tacitly …

The Heroine Archetype, Annabelle L. Nelson

Heroism Science

Theorists and researchers have documented some of the characteristics of heroes which include humility, endurance, courage, vulnerability, perseverance, and the choice to solve societal problems with moral action. These characteristics help a hero complete a journey derived from Campbell’s The Hero with A Thousand Faces. The journey’s cycle begins with a normal state when a call to adventure moves a person to face tests, rely on helpers and transform the self to solve dilemmas. Identifying with a hero as an archetype can activate a psychodynamic and open awareness for insight and emotional strength. Usually, a hero is seen as non-gender …
