Cutting Across The Waves Of The Web: The "Care Of The Self" As An Ethical Response To Post-Truth Politics In Social Media, Roberto Paolo T. Sangil
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Uttering “facts are passé” captures the spirit of post-truth. However, it often leads to addressing facts rather than why they pass off as passé. “Post-truth” was dubbed the 2016 Word of the Year due to its increased usage during the Brexit referendum and the US presidential election in the same year. The issue presses at least twenty-six countries, including the Philippines, as they face widespread disinformation and misinformation. This paper offers an overview of the social media manipulation from Samantha Bradshaw and Philip Howard, and networked disinformation in the Philippines from Jonathan Corpus Ong and Jason Vincent Cabañes. This paper …
Circum-Navigating The World Island, Among Enemies, John T. Giordano
Circum-Navigating The World Island, Among Enemies, John T. Giordano
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Everyday our vision travels across time and space. We see images in the media about atrocities, disruptions, crises, famine, and wars. And in each case, our sense of injustice is awakened. We feel outrage and indignation based upon our ideals and value systems, which were formed through our traditions and religions. But in this age where the power of media and information is so powerful, what we see is often manufactured to appeal to our values. While these values circulate among the images we see in cyberspace, these manipulations are rooted in certain realities: geography, natural resources, and power relationships. …
The Meatpacking Industry Needs Stronger Worker Protections And Enhanced Oversight, India Luxton, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern
The Meatpacking Industry Needs Stronger Worker Protections And Enhanced Oversight, India Luxton, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern
Center for Policy Research
Meatpacking plants are hazardous workplaces with high injury rates and poor working conditions, negatively impacting the health of the industry’s predominately immigrant and refugee workforce. The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated ongoing concerns in the industry, including the problems associated with consolidation and concentration, worker safety, and poor public health outcomes. This brief summarizes findings from a study that used data from 39 interviews with local, state, and federal officials and bureaucrats, worker advocates, and workers to analyze meatpacking policymaking and oversight during COVID-19. The authors find that a lack of industry oversight and decreased regulation contribute to unsafe environments, and injustices …

Who Are We, Filipinos? A Note, Leonardo R. Silos
Who Are We, Filipinos? A Note, Leonardo R. Silos
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
To know who we are, Filipinos, we must know who we were, Indios. On the one hand, we have few precolonial documents which might tell who the Indio was; on the other hand, the Filipino is the Westernized Indio. The Filipino is who the West says the Filipino is. According to Western research, the Filipino, like all Orientals, is a residual category of the Occidental: not Western. There is need of independent Asian research. The only really ancient documents connecting the Filipino with the Indio are perhaps our music and dance, and, above all, our languages, surely, our national language. …
Ethics Of Refusal: Globalization And The Penan People's Struggle For Recognition, Jeffry Ocay
Ethics Of Refusal: Globalization And The Penan People's Struggle For Recognition, Jeffry Ocay
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In this article I explore ways in which the Penan of Sarawak, Malaysia, whose lives have been impacted by globalization, draw on their rich cultural heritage to demand recognition. I argue that an articulation of a new rather than traditional form of struggle for recognition should come from the margins of the global system. Their indigenous practices, when linked to neocolonial domination, point to a possible “outside” of the system by highlighting the system’s destructive potential rendered invisible “at the center” and by embodying ways of living that promote social solidarity and preserve the environment. I argue further that by …
The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy
The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The economic and social prosperity of nations are usually attributed to functional requirements—such as honest government, effective transport and communication networks, health care and education—and development strategies such as investment in infrastructure. However, beyond a certain point peak economic and social success relies as much on human ingenuity as on capital investment. The article proposes that the world’s most prosperous societies have three recurring characteristics that foster such ingenuity: (1) they are all closely connected to trading portals, (2) they nourish paradoxical belief systems that underscore a proclivity for intellectual abstraction and pattern-based interaction, and (3) they are stranger societies …
The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra
The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In his first Manifesto for Philosophy, Alain Badiou alludes to the idea of sutures occurring between philosophy and the more dominant disciplines like science, politics, art, and psychoanalysis after Hegel. This phenomenon is inextricably linked to discourses about the end of philosophy and the linguistic turn in hermeneutic, analytic, and postmodern philosophies. In Badiou’s analysis one finds that in so far as these traditions are concerned, systematic philosophy is henceforth impossible. In this work, I take Badiou’s said allusion seriously and argue that after totalitarianism and the two world wars, an antipathy towards systematic philosophy has led to what I …
Deconstructing And Expanding Gender Roles: Theological Reflections On Women And Local Disaster Response, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen
Deconstructing And Expanding Gender Roles: Theological Reflections On Women And Local Disaster Response, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The situation of women during and after local disasters may, at first, seem unrelated to feminist theology, but this article argues that a critical reflection on the matter helps the Church further understand the relationship between men, women, and the rest of creation. In the context of two Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) documents entitled “What is Happening to Our Beautiful Land?” (1988) and “Upholding the Sanctity of Life” (2008), this article will analyze and articulate the gender ideologies that seem to underpin how women and nature are understood, using the reflections on the situation of women in …

Educational Ideals In Pre And Post-War Japan: From Imperial Subject To Deweyan Democratic Citizen, Anton Luis Sevilla
Educational Ideals In Pre And Post-War Japan: From Imperial Subject To Deweyan Democratic Citizen, Anton Luis Sevilla
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This essay is an analysis of educational philosophy and ideals in Japan. Japan’s recent educational reforms have been criticized as a “return to imperialism” or as “undemocratic.” In order to clarify the content of ideas/ideologies like “imperialist education” and “democratic education,” this essay examines the relationship between Japan’s imperialist philosophy of education, as articulated in the Cardinal Principles of Japan’s National Polity (1937), and democratic education, as represented by John Dewey’s Democracy and Education (1916). Usually, these two are considered to be opposed, with the former prevailing during Japan’s imperialist expansion, and the latter prevailing after Japan’s fall. However, this …

Re-Imagining Professional Learning For Teachers: A Reflection On The Transformative Experience Of An Organic Inquiry., Desiree J. Gilbert Dr
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Challenged, frustrated and motivated by my observation and sense that learning experiences are often designed and facilitated with an emphasis on criticality over creativity, I engaged in PhD studies to explore the question, How can expanding my understanding of creativity and its connection to learning assist me to re-imagine professional learning for teachers so that their learning experiences are enhanced? In this article I discuss how my practice as a professional learning facilitator for teachers transformed through this study. In particular I describe my experiences and findings from my open exploration of creativity as a phenomenon and how the organic …

The (Re-)Emergence Of State Racism On The Eve Of Regional Integration In Southeast Asia: A Survey Of Five Countries, Hansley A. Juliano, Enrico B. La VińA, Matthew David D. OrdońEz
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Up to the eve of the unveiling of ASEAN Regional Integration in 2015, cases of ethnic and racial discrimination have been reported within ASEAN member countries, with the persecution of the Rohingya of Myanmar being just one of many. This study is a preliminary look at how negative race and ethnic relations between ASEAN nationals have not abated, coloring their view of regional integration. It looks at how race relations between ASEAN member countries have developed alongside the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint in 2007 up to the present. Based on a review of the structure of …
The Fragility Of Identity In The Age Of Manufacture, Elaine M. Lazaro
The Fragility Of Identity In The Age Of Manufacture, Elaine M. Lazaro
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This essay begins with a discussion of how globalization poses a threat to identity. To support this claim, the second part reflects on the pathologies of the city, as characterized by Paul Ricoeur, with a particular emphasis on memory. Globalization’s effects are clearly manifest in the scale of the city, and as such, Ricoeur considers the pathology of the city an expression of global society’s pathology. Because for Ricoeur, identity is always narrative identity, and narratives are repositories of memories, the question of identity is also a question of the use and abuse of memory. The third part examines the …
A Vision Of Hell: Walter Benjamin's Angelus Novus And The Catastrophe Of Progress, Pregiosa Regina Ang De Joya
A Vision Of Hell: Walter Benjamin's Angelus Novus And The Catastrophe Of Progress, Pregiosa Regina Ang De Joya
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Before his untimely death in 1940, the German philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote an essay, entitled “Theses on the Philosophy of History,” marking his recovery from the shock of the Hitler-Stalin non-aggression pact. This study reflects on the philosophical and historical significance of this essay, unraveling Benjamin’s critique of Marxism as a critique of progress. Progress, which the angel of history sees as a storm coming from paradise, has caused a growing pile of rubble of historical blunders and environmental disasters. This uncritical submission to progress, however, can be seen not only in the blind confidence of the communists and the …

Archaeology, Purity And Society: Some Methodological Reflections, Eyal Regev
'Atiqot
This article examines the assumptions and methodology underlying the correlation between stepped pools and stone vessels and purity laws and practices. It focuses on the way these are interpreted in light of Second Temple period and early rabbinic texts. The article further introduces more complex understandings of the emergence of ritual baths in the Hasmonean period as an expression of Jewish ethnic identity, and the flourishing of ritual baths and stone vessels in the first century CE, as an indication of social individualism.

Study Abroad Angst: A Literature Review On The Mental Health Of International Students During Covid-19, Daisuke Akiba, Michael Perrone, Caterina Almendral
Publications and Research
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique and unprecedented challenges for international students, those studying at institutions of higher education outside of their home countries, due to their distinct circumstances and vulnerabilities. This literature review examines the multifaceted mental health burdens they experienced and highlights the need for targeted support and interventions. Methods: A rigorous search across three databases (i.e., PubMed, PsycINFO, and ERIC) yielded 50 empirical studies for inclusion in this literature review. A six-phase thematic analysis framework was employed to identify and synthesize key themes. Results: Seven prominent themes emerged: (1) academic and professional disruptions; (2) challenges navigating international …

INTRODUCTION: The full extent of interactions between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, injection drug use, and the human microbiome is unclear. In this study, we examined the microbiomes of HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals, both drug-injecting and non-injecting, to identify bacterial community changes in response to HIV and drug use. We utilized a well-established cohort of people who inject drugs in Puerto Rico, a region with historically high levels of injection drug use and an HIV incidence rate disproportionately associated with drug use. METHODS: Using amplicon-based 16S rDNA sequencing, we identified amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) that demonstrated significant variations in the …

Social Support, Employee Engagement, And Turnover Intention Of Hybrid Working Leaders In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Victoria Terrell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Retaining leaders in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry is a challenge, and leadership attrition can negatively impact a company. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, hybrid work arrangements are used to retain leaders in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, yet challenges exist with social support and employee engagement within hybrid work. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationships, if any, between social support, employee engagement, and turnover intentions among hybrid working leaders in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry. The job demands-resources model and the social exchange theory provided the study’s foundation. The study sample consisted of 245 leaders in middle-management …

Perceptions Of Experiences Of Formerly Incarcerated Individuals On Community Reentry Programs To Reduce Recidivism, Kelly Sieger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study was conducted to identify the perceptions of experiences of formerly incarcerated individuals who have been actively involved in community-based reentry programming (CBRP). Utilizing a qualitative interview approach with previously incarcerated persons, the study’s focus was to identify the differences in literature, lived experiences, and the connection between CBRP and recidivism through the perceptions of formerly incarcerated persons who have completed CBRP. A key goal was to identify difficulties in the reentry process through the perception of lived experience and offer suggestions for improvements through the lens of actuarial justice. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, data was collected through …

Louise Farrenc’s life and work embody the challenges female musicians encountered in the nineteenth century, and the progress they made beyond societal norms and gender-based restrictions. Thanks to her talent, perseverance, teaching position at the Paris Conservatory, and the support of her husband (who encouraged her and edited most of her music), she helped to shape the established societal mindset and impacted history, smoothing the road for future generations of female musicians. By examining Farrenc’s compositions we can gain insight into the contribution of a female musician who successfully established herself as an admired composer as well as a respected …

Adoption of diverse weed management practices is viewed as essential for slowing the spread of herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds. Yet, adoption of diverse tactics has remained low, while there has been explosive growth of resistant weeds. This study analyzes U.S.-farm-level data to identify factors affecting adoption of diverse weed management practices. This study uses directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to consider how practice adoption is influenced by different causal pathways between farmer and farm characteristics and farmer awareness of and concern over HR weeds. This study then uses multiple regression analysis to estimate the direct and indirect pathways that influence practice adoption. …
