Faculty Accountability In Higher Education: Navigating Complexity And Equity, Mary Margaret Cunningham
Faculty Accountability In Higher Education: Navigating Complexity And Equity, Mary Margaret Cunningham
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
This chapter examines the complex landscape of faculty accountability in modern higher education institutions. It analyzes the traditional supervisory structures and evaluation systems while highlighting emerging challenges and tensions in faculty assessment. Additionally, it explores the multiple dimensions of faculty accountability, including the tenure and promotion process, the role of student evaluations, and peer review systems. Particular attention is given to how these systems impact faculty of underrepresented identities and the increasing prevalence of non- tenure track positions. This chapter also explores how mission creep and shifting facultystudent dynamics affect accountability standards. Through an analysis of current practices and limitations, …
I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young
I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young
MESM Major Papers
Though a majority of Americans accept climate change as a reality, most people are hesitant to discuss the issue. And the implications of climate silence have far-reaching effects, including less action on climate change. This project synthesizes recent research on climate change, climate silence, and climate action to create a workbook-style zine. This tool is meant to help people who are concerned about the changing climate have generative, deep conversations about this crisis. Through a literature review, a first-person interview, and centering inclusive science communication principles, I created I can see a future: Creative ways to talk about climate change. …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca
Library Publications
Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.
Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Liberal Arts Education And Practical Pedagogy, Jessica Roberts
Liberal Arts Education And Practical Pedagogy, Jessica Roberts
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores how a liberal arts education, combined with extensive practical teaching experience and real-world insights, has shaped my philosophy and trajectory as a future educator as I traversed the college system. Drawing from interdisciplinary coursework and firsthand classroom involvement, I examine the benefits and challenges of pursuing a nontraditional path into teaching, particularly through the lens of Florida’s certification system. Rather than following a conventional teacher preparation program, I intentionally crafted an individualized academic journey grounded in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, complemented by sustained practicum experiences across multiple school districts. My work highlights how liberal arts …

The Rise Of Women’S Soccer In The United States Of America, Nancy Siguenza
Theses & ETDs
Over the past century, women have gradually gained recognition and acceptance within the world of sports, breaking barriers and challenging long-standing societal norms. In the United States, women’s soccer has experienced significant growth. This thesis examines how globalization, Title IX, gender dynamics, socioeconomic factors, and political policies influenced women’s soccer. This research uses a historical analysis to explore the complexities of being both an athlete and a woman in America. The findings reveal that women’s soccer has reached great heights in equal pay, fair media representation, and visibility. This research asserts that women and soccer in America are working together …
Creative Connections: The Liberal Arts Approach To Supporting Vulnerable Youth At The National Association Of Mental Illness, Jayleigh Totten
Creative Connections: The Liberal Arts Approach To Supporting Vulnerable Youth At The National Association Of Mental Illness, Jayleigh Totten
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores my journey throughout my internship with NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, where I applied a liberal arts education to real-life mental health advocacy. The intersection between liberal arts and mental health is rooted in community engagement, hands-on experiences, and critical thinking. Through programs like Lean On Me and Youth Move, I was able to support the youth and young adult community through peer support and program development. This is not your traditional research-based approach, instead, it provides a reflective summary of in-depth experiences through storytelling, personal reflection, and analysis.

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
From 2021 to 2024, Hampton Roads grew more quickly and created jobs at a faster pace than the previous decade. Even after accounting for the impacts of inflation, real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), wages, and incomes were higher than 2019. The region’s economic performance relative to other metropolitan areas, however, has left much to be desired. One reflection of Hampton Roads economic performance has been the continued outmigration of residents to other locales in the Commonwealth and, in some cases, other states.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Masters Project Reports
This study investigates the influence of a place-based, hands-on engineering learning experience on rural middle school students' engineering career aspirations, using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) as a framework. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we explored how these localized learning experiences shape students' career goals through socio-cognitive factors such as self-efficacy, outcome expectations, goals, and interest. Quantitative analysis of pre- and post-activity surveys revealed significant increases in career aspiration scores, particularly among students from farming backgrounds and female students with initially lower expectations. Path analyses indicated that self-efficacy and interest were the strongest mediators between Place-based learning and engineering career aspirations. …

Introduction: Beyond Hollow Materialism, Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth, Zada Komara
Art Faculty Publications
This introduction to the special issue, “Transformative Approaches to Materiality in Appalachian Studies,” provides theoretical background and examples that demonstrate applications of new material culture and materiality theory to key Appalachian studies themes. It offers new directions for the study of material entanglement in social relationships by reviewing the history of material culture studies in the Appalachian context, fundamental theoretical propositions emerging from the “material turn” in social theory, and examples drawn from ethnographic and archaeological research into the patterns of use of material culture in the timber country of West Virginia and coalfields of eastern Kentucky. Finally, this introduction …

Four Valleys Archive Scholarship
Higher education inculcates in students an enduring curiosity about the world. Accomplishing this goal requires helping undergraduates recognize that learning is a social process occurring within multiple communities of practice. Each of these collectives provides different lenses through which aspects of reality are illuminated, none encompassing all there is to know about a subject. Students thus appreciate that learning is an open-ended processes driven by a curiosity that is never satisfied. Knowledge resulting from that process is forever being refined, a project to which undergraduates can contribute. Appreciating the many ways of knowing the world requires engaging meaningfully with these …

The Toxic World Of Gendered Emotions: Men And Emotional Disclosure, Rylie Foley
The Toxic World Of Gendered Emotions: Men And Emotional Disclosure, Rylie Foley
Undergraduate Review
Previous research highlights that societal norms often condition men to view emotions like anger as acceptable and expected expressions of masculinity while discouraging vulnerability or sadness. These patterns align with traditional gender norms that prioritize dominance and emotional restraint. This study aims to explore how men disclose emotions such as anger and sadness and how the gender of the person they are speaking to influences these disclosures. Specifically, the study examines whether men are more open about sadness with female interviewers compared to male interviewers. Using a qualitative design, 16 male participants were interviewed with open-ended questions about their emotional …
