A Localized Strategy To Boost Public Opinion And Increase Community Support For Rural Public Education By Understanding Parental Motivations For School Choice, Stephanie Marie Lambrecht Jan 2025

A Localized Strategy To Boost Public Opinion And Increase Community Support For Rural Public Education By Understanding Parental Motivations For School Choice, Stephanie Marie Lambrecht

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Families and educators understand school choice as a broad concept, however its implications for rural public education in Virginia are less frequently considered. In rural areas, school choice has a disproportionate impact due to funding formulas and the effects of average daily membership (ADM) on school budgets. While there is a great deal of research on school choice, the rationale behind families’ decisions varies depending on the cultural and material resources of their community. It is vital to consider the regional and cultural context when developing strategies to support rural public schools. By analyzing motivations and factors which influence school …

California Dreamin’: Industrialization, The Progressive Movement, And The Americanization Of The Russian Molokans, Ryan Cutillo Jan 2025

California Dreamin’: Industrialization, The Progressive Movement, And The Americanization Of The Russian Molokans, Ryan Cutillo

Undergraduate History Papers (non-capstone)

At the dawn of the twentieth century, a wave of Russian Molokan immigrants arrived in Southern California, bringing with them dreams of religious freedom, agrarian simplicity, and communal self-determination. What they encountered instead was a complex web of industrial ambition, Progressive idealism, and American social engineering. This paper traces the Molokans’ journey from the Caucasus to the barrios of Boyle Heights and the fields of Baja California, highlighting the often-overlooked intersections between philanthropy and profiteering, altruism and assimilation. Figures such as Rev. Dana Bartlett, C.P. de Blumenthal, and Peter A. Demens emerge not only as benefactors but as agents in …

No. 87: Mythologies Of Mixed Migration And The Southern Route, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed Jan 2025

No. 87: Mythologies Of Mixed Migration And The Southern Route, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed

Southern African Migration Programme

In Africa, various international organizations have promoted “mixed migration” as a new governance challenge requiring innovative policy responses. The narrative, which has been repurposed from discussions on African migration to Europe to include intra-African movements, positions migration flows as primarily irregular, organized and driven by smugglers, and requiring tight control by states. This report shows that textual and cartographic representations of the so-called Southern Route are a form of cartopolitics, constructing migration as a permanent flow of irregular migrants from a singular origin toward a common destination. By portraying migration as solely a function of smuggling and coercion, the Southern …

Impact Of Physical Intimate Partner Violence Victimization On Jamaican Women’S Mental Health: The Moderating Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Kerry A. Lee, Sharon Rose Priestley, Kevin K. Hylton

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Purpose: Few studies have examined the relationship between IPV victimization and mental health outcomes and the moderating role of ACEs in this relationship among Jamaican women. Using trauma theory to undergird this study, we examined the relationship between physical IPV victimization and depressive symptoms and anxiety while accounting for the moderating effects of ACEs on these relationships among Jamaican women.

Methods: Univariate and ordinary least squares regression (OLS) analyses were performed using data from the 2016 National Women’s Health Survey, a nationally representative sample of Jamaican women aged 15 to 64.

Results: Experience of physical IPV victimization was found …

Racial Trauma, Racial Pride, And The Role Of Racial Identity Stages, Alexis Henry

Psychology Honors Papers

Racial trauma, racial pride, and racial identity statuses are emerging topics of interest in psychology, but little research has been conducted on how they interact with each other. Utilizing survey research methods, this study aimed to determine the complex interactions between these constructs in Black adults in the United States. Participants completed the Cross Racial Identity Scale, the Black Pride Scale, and the Racial Trauma Scale Short-Form Version. Moderation and mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate how racial trauma and racial identity predict racial pride. This study found a moderated mediation model which significantly predicts racial pride. In this model, …

Chenoweth Prevails: The Connection Between Social Standards And The Marimba’S Development In The Western Art Music Tradition, Jackson Hall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Among percussionists, the names of many marimbists come to mind before that of Vida Chenoweth (1928-2018), the pioneer of the modern marimba recital. Chenoweth began her first recital tour in the early 1950s at a time when the marimba did not yet have a dedicated solo repertoire, and women were largely excluded from performing on orchestral instruments. This thesis explores the musical and social contexts in which Chenoweth performed and worked, with particular attention to her recital history, critical reviews, and, through works written specifically for her performance, her technical abilities. She not only sparked the evolution of marimba technique …

Climate Perceptions For Underrepresented Leaders: Influencing Service Employees' Proactive Behaviors Through Psychological Safety And Knowledge Sharing., Huy(Robert) Gip, Michelle Russen, Priyanko Guchait

Marketing Faculty Publications

Much of the diversity research in hospitality and tourism has focused on employee representation and management practices, but little attention has been paid to the role of inclusion among diverse leaders. This study investigates how employees’ perceptions of an inclusive climate for leadership diversity (PICLD) impact their psychological safety, knowledge sharing, and proactive work behaviors. A sample of 182 hospitality and tourism employees was analyzed using PLS-SEM, revealing that PICLD positively influences psychological safety and knowledge sharing, which, in turn, impacts proactive work behaviors. The study provides both theoretical and practical implications, enriching literature on antecedents of proactive …

Covid-19 Taking Aim At The Heart Of Public Education, Jeremy James Pyle Jan 2025

Covid-19 Taking Aim At The Heart Of Public Education, Jeremy James Pyle

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The COVID-19 pandemic, distinguished by both its duration and widespread impact, stands apart from other crises typically faced by schools, such as natural disasters, school violence, or isolated traumatic incidents. Unlike these shorter-term events, the pandemic fundamentally altered the educational landscape, reshaping both school climate and instructional practices. This non-experimental, descriptive study employed a phenomenological research approach to examine the lived experiences of teachers during and after the pandemic. The central aim was to explore how pandemic-related stressors influenced teachers’ decisions to remain in or leave the profession, as well as to identify the supports educators perceived as necessary for …

Gig Economy And Income Inequality, Utsah Thakur Jan 2025

Gig Economy And Income Inequality, Utsah Thakur

Student Research

The dramatic expansion of the gig economy in the United States has led to a transition from traditional labor markets to a more flexible structure creating opportunities for alternate income sources. While the gig economy provides more work opportunities for low-skilled workers, there are also concerns about the role that it may play in contributing to income inequality. This research explores the spatio-temporal relationship between the participation of workers in the gig economy and income inequality. The study extracts individual-level data from the IPUMS dataset to compute consistent state-specific measures of participation in the gig economy and income inequality over …

The Debate Surrounding Ozempic And Other “Miracle” Weight Loss Drugs Situated In The Scholarly And Public Spheres, Allison Rivard Jan 2025

The Debate Surrounding Ozempic And Other “Miracle” Weight Loss Drugs Situated In The Scholarly And Public Spheres, Allison Rivard

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

Over the last few years, there has been a frenzy of media outlets, celebrities, and influencers publicizing the effectiveness of semaglutides, like Ozempic, for an off-label use: weight loss. With the larger presence and availability of these medications for off-label use instead of diabetes management, outsiders believe that obese and overweight people who begin to look different are cheating. The public nature and visibility of weight loss subject the people losing weight to much speculation and scrutiny. In the past, many weight loss “solutions” have been proposed, diets created, and even surgeries performed, but these “solutions” have proven temporary. Most …

Developing A Culturally Sensitive Nursing Framework For Muslim Patients Practicing Ramadan: Focusing On Fasting Benefits And Islamic Dietary Recommendations, Amreen M. Munshi

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Muslims practice Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting from dawn to dusk, yet many healthcare providers lack knowledge of its principles and practices. Hospitals lack formal education on caring for fasting Muslim patients, leading to a knowledge deficit in cultural competence and sensitivity of Islamic practices. Purpose: This paper proposes a research design for a nurse education program on Ramadan fasting to promote cultural competence and sensitivity in nursing care. The proposed research aims to educate nurses on Islamic practices, particularly Ramadan, to bridge the cultural competency gap. The literature review also explores the health benefits of …

Law In Society: Defending Hart, Alma Diamond Jan 2025

Law In Society: Defending Hart, Alma Diamond

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

I revisit the debate between Joseph Raz and H. L. A. Hart concerning the nature of legal content and reasoning. Raz contended that legal reasoning should be analyzed as a form of moral reasoning. In contrast, Hart emphasized the distinction between legal and moral content, proposing that legal reasoning is a form of what I will call social-institutional reasoning. I characterize social-institutional reasoning in terms of the agent-relative, domain-specific, universal, and content-insensitive justifications it draws upon. I evaluate Raz’s moralized analysis and argue that it obscures the distinctive contribution that law’s social and institutional grounds play in our understanding of …

The Impact Of Gender On Learning Styles Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Caleb Quernemoen Jan 2025

The Impact Of Gender On Learning Styles Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Caleb Quernemoen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how gender influences the learning styles of students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs). While students inherently learn in different ways, factors such as gender and the presence of a learning disability add complexity to the classroom experience. Research supports the idea that boys and girls are not identical in how they learn, and that one-size-fits-all instruction may not serve diverse learners effectively. This study explores how these gender-based differences manifest among students with SLD. These findings underscore the importance of individualized teaching strategies and invite educators to critically assess how best to support all students with learning …

From Adversity To Achievement: The Resilience Of Black Students Raised In Single-Parent Households, Kim Loren Johnson

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

There is limited literature on the resilience strategies of Black students raised in single-parent households and their academic success. Black children are often portrayed as facing negative outcomes educationally. Yet, despite there being challenges they graduate from high school, go to college and are successful. This qualitative phenomenology study explores the lives of 12 Black college students raised in a single-parent household, aged 21-65 years and older, that persevered through adversity and the strategies they utilized to achieve academic success. It examines the internal and external motivational factors that contributed to their achievements as well as the role of support …

Stigma And Isolation: The Lived Experiences Of Male Sexual Assault Survivors In College, Vanessa Vela Jan 2025

Stigma And Isolation: The Lived Experiences Of Male Sexual Assault Survivors In College, Vanessa Vela

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Male sexual assault survivors on college campuses face barriers to disclosure, support, and recovery due to stigma, societal expectations of masculinity, and inadequate institutional resources. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of six male survivors of sexual assault enrolled in college, focusing on their perceptions of sexual violence before and after their assault, the psychological burden of disclosure, and their experiences with available support systems. Participants described challenges including rape myths, feelings of isolation, fear of emasculation, and limited access to gender-inclusive resources. While online communities provided some support, institutional services often failed to meet their needs due …

Falling In Line: The Model Minority Myth And Asian American Political Alignment, Aiden Yang Jan 2025

Falling In Line: The Model Minority Myth And Asian American Political Alignment, Aiden Yang

Sociology Honors Projects

The “Model Minority” Myth portrays Asian Americans as uniformly successful, disciplined, and hard-working, often positioning their success as proof to minorities that systemic barriers can be overcome through individual effort. While some have celebrated this stereotype, it has also been weaponized to obscure systemic inequalities, reinforce racial hierarchies, and pit Asian Americans against other minority groups. Despite its pervasive influence, the impact of this myth on Asian Americans’ political party affiliation remains underexplored. This research attempts to answer the question of how the Model Minority Myth, anti-Black sentiments, and shared sense of groupness shape the political alignment of Asian Americans. …

Navigating Institutional Apathy: Resisting The Co-Optation Of Decolonial And Liberatory Frameworks In Higher Education, Louise Yang Jan 2025

Navigating Institutional Apathy: Resisting The Co-Optation Of Decolonial And Liberatory Frameworks In Higher Education, Louise Yang

Sociology Honors Projects

Amidst nationwide challenges to DEI programs, frameworks of decolonization and liberation have been simultaneously employed and depoliticized by institutions of higher education to falsely build a progressive façade while dismissing the values associated with these terms. To explain this dynamic, I introduce institutional apathy, which I define as the tendency of colleges to reproduce the status quo, denying the potential of an ongoing commitment to decolonial and liberatory values. Using interviews with staff and faculty at a liberal arts college, I explore how actors in the institution resist co-optation using foundations of solidarity, community partnerships, and incorporations of incremental change.
