Letter To The Church, Chris Brouillard-Coyle
Letter To The Church, Chris Brouillard-Coyle
Consensus
What is pastoral leadership? How is, and can, pastoral leadership be embodied in the Church today? Who can and should participate in reflections on these questions? While engaging in a course on pastoral leadership, with the support of the professor, an idea arose to write a letter to the Church following the patterns of the Epistles in the Bible. The goal was to create something that could be read and studied by anyone, while ensuring that the academic rigour behind the contents was made available via the footnotes. The letter is intentionally written in the style of the Epistles, and …
Temporary Migrant Workers In Transnational Space: Understanding Class Ambiguity, Habibul Haque Khondker
Temporary Migrant Workers In Transnational Space: Understanding Class Ambiguity, Habibul Haque Khondker
All Works
This paper has two main objectives. First, it delves into the complex dynamics of social inequality among migrant workers who, being transnational, often face a dual or multiple class and status positions depending on their physical location, and their ethno-national, and gender backgrounds. Their class position becomes uncertain, fluid, and unstable. Drawing comparisons with their sedentary counterparts, the ambiguity of their class positions in the home and host countries becomes apparent. Migrant workers, often driven by economic necessity or geopolitical factors, face unique challenges that distinguish their experiences from those in settled communities. By examining the multifaceted dimensions of social …
Determining Political Objectives, Milan Vego
Determining Political Objectives, Milan Vego
Joint Force Quarterly
This article explains how political objectives shape grand strategy and national or coalition security strategy and argues that they must be realistic, achievable, and clearly articulated before military options are developed. Political leaders bear primary responsibility for determining these objectives but should incorporate the professional advice of senior military leaders. The author outlines a process that begins with a strategic estimate, identification and prioritization of national interests, and assessment of the enemy, available resources, and political assumptions. Political objectives may be offensive or defensive and limited or unlimited in scope, with their value and ambition affecting the level of effort, …
Innocent Until Predicted Guilty: How Premature Predictive Policing Can Lead To A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Of Juvenile Delinquency, Nadia Rossbach
Innocent Until Predicted Guilty: How Premature Predictive Policing Can Lead To A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Of Juvenile Delinquency, Nadia Rossbach
Florida Law Review
Predictive policing is an innovative, evolving approach to crime prevention that law enforcement has recently embraced. These programs are designed to detect crime patterns by employing machine-learned algorithms to identify high-crime areas as well as likely offenders. In doing so, law enforcement hopes to implement a proactive approach in which officers will be able to prevent crime rather than merely respond to it. However, these programs can be plagued with inaccuracies and racial and socio-economic bias. With juveniles, in particular, the programs impress far too great of consequences while failing to accurately predict adolescents’ future criminality. The impressionable and developing …
The Secret Sauce: Examining Law Schools That Overperform On The Bar Exam, Christopher J. Ryan Jr., Derek T. Muller
The Secret Sauce: Examining Law Schools That Overperform On The Bar Exam, Christopher J. Ryan Jr., Derek T. Muller
Florida Law Review
Since 2010, law schools have faced declining enrollment and entering classes with lower predictors of success despite recent signs of improvement. At least partly as a result, rates at which law school graduates pass the bar exam have declined and remain at historic lows. Yet, during this time, many schools have improved their graduates’ chances of success on the bar exam, and some schools have dramatically outperformed their predicted bar exam passage rates. This Article examines which schools do so and why. Research for this Article began by accounting for law schools’ incoming class credentials to predict an expected bar …
Holy Day Surveys And Political Attitudes In Israel, Hannah M. Ridge
Holy Day Surveys And Political Attitudes In Israel, Hannah M. Ridge
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
Researchers regularly use large survey studies to examine public political opinion. Surveys running over days and months will necessarily incorporate religious occasions that can introduce variation in public opinion. Using recent survey data from Israel, this study demonstrates that giving surveys on religious occasions (e.g., the Sabbath, Hannukah, Sukkot) can elicit different opinion responses. These effects are found among both religious and non-religious respondents. While incorporating these fluctuations is realistic in longer-term surveys, surveys fielded in a short window inadvertently drawing heavily on a holiday or holy day sample may bias their findings. This study thus urges researchers to be …
What Women Intercollegiate Coaches Say: Decision-Making Factors When Navigating Career Choices, Courtney Boucher, Nicole M. Lavoi
What Women Intercollegiate Coaches Say: Decision-Making Factors When Navigating Career Choices, Courtney Boucher, Nicole M. Lavoi
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
To address misconceptions about the lack of women in sport coaching, factors influencing intercollegiate women coaches' career decisions, including their choices to leave positions, apply for new ones, and accept or deny job offers were explored. Utilizing a multi-level analysis underpinned by critical feminist theory, a comprehensive understanding of the systemic and structural barriers women coaches faced, as well as the strategies they employed to navigate their careers were illuminated. Key findings revealed that unequal pay, lack of administrative support, insufficient resources, and pervasive gender biases significantly impacted women's career choices. The importance of supportive workplace environments, flexible working conditions, …
Some Contradictions Of The Welfare State: Revisited, Chris O'Ralaigh
Some Contradictions Of The Welfare State: Revisited, Chris O'Ralaigh
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
It is now 40 years since the publication of Claus Offe's classical paper, Some Contradictions of the Modern Welfare State. Much change has occurred to the form and content of welfare states over the intervening years, yet in addition to change, continuities are very much evident, and it is this constellation of developments – alongside anniversarial convenience – which has motivated a re-examination of Offe's seminal work on the contradictions of welfare states. This anniversary article re-introduces and provides a critique of the original paper before moving on to a historical comparison of the major political economic and societal differences …
The Caitlin Clark Effect: Illuminating Women’S Sport History, Shelley Lucas
The Caitlin Clark Effect: Illuminating Women’S Sport History, Shelley Lucas
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
The Caitlin Clark Effect is a term that describes the impact of the University of Iowa basketball player on the popularity of women’s basketball, which occurred in conjunction with Clark’s record-breaking performances in 2023 and 2024, as well as the Iowa team’s successes in the NCAA championship tournament. While the Caitlin Clark Effect is associated with intense media attention, ticket sales, and viewership, it also illuminates significant and lesser-known aspects of women’s sport history, specifically media coverage, the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), and the state of Iowa’s unique basketball heritage and ‘6-on-6’ basketball rules. The purpose of …

The Quic-Sp: A Spanish Language Tool Assessing Unpredictability In Early Life Is Linked To Physical And Mental Health, Sabrina R. Liu, Natasha A. Bailey, Sara Romero-González, Amy Moors, Belinda Campos, Elysia P. Davis, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Accumulating evidence indicates that unpredictable signals in early life represent a unique form of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) associated with disrupted neurodevelopmental trajectories in children and adolescents. The Questionnaire of Unpredictability in Childhood (QUIC) was developed to assess early life unpredictability, encompassing social, emotional, and physical unpredictability in a child’s environment, and has been validated in three independent cohorts. However, the importance of identifying ACEs in diverse populations, including non-English speaking groups, necessitates translation of the QUIC. The current study aims to translate and validate a Spanish language version of the QUIC (QUIC-SP) and assess its associations with mental and …

This study examined teachers’ perceptions and experiences regarding the interrelationships between behavior policy, student behavior, and autonomy-supportive behavior. It approximated the realities experienced by teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they encountered in implementing behavior policies and fostering autonomy-supportive behavior. While attrition, shortage, and dissatisfaction were not the primary focus, they significantly influenced the teacher participants based on their experiences with high teacher turnover in their schools. I collected qualitative through semi-structured interviews to explore teachers’ realities, using six participants from Memphis Shelby County Schools. By utilizing conflict theory and the ambiguity-conflict matrix adapted from Matland (1997), …

Performance Methodologies In Suicide Prevention Research: Queerness, Colonization, And Co-Performative Witnessing In Indigenous Community, Antonia R. G. Alvarez
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Performance methodologies take many forms—performative writing, poetic transcription, and co-performative witnessing, to name only a few—and can be both process and product, differentiating and unifying a group between and across differences. As a social work researcher committed to decolonial, liberatory methodologies that make and bring meaning to the communities I work with, performance methodologies fill a gap that other qualitative research methods can only begin to approach. This project is an exploration in performance methodologies and Critical Suicidology through the lens of social work research, with a case study derived from a performance documenting suicide prevention research with Native Hawaiians. …

Resilience For A Digital Age, Danielle Keats Citron, Kristen E. Eichensehr
Resilience For A Digital Age, Danielle Keats Citron, Kristen E. Eichensehr
University of Chicago Legal Forum
A resilience agenda is an essential part of protecting national security in a digital age. Digital technologies impact nearly all aspects of everyday life, from communications and medical care to electricity and government services. Societal reliance on digital tools should be paired with efforts to secure societal resilience. A resilience agenda involves preparing for, adapting to, withstanding, and recovering from disruptions in ways that advance societal interests, goals, and values. Emphasizing resilience offers several benefits: 1) Resilience is threat agnostic or at least relatively threat neutral; 2) its inward focus emphasizes actions under the control of a targeted country, rather …
Religious Covenants, Nicole Stelle Garnett, Patrick E. Reidy
Religious Covenants, Nicole Stelle Garnett, Patrick E. Reidy
Florida Law Review
When religious institutions alienate property, they often include religiously motivated deed restrictions that bind future owners, sometimes in perpetuity. These “religious covenants” serve different purposes and advance different goals. Some prohibit land uses that the alienating faith communities consider illicit; others seek to ensure continuity of faith commitments; still, others signal public disaffiliation with the new owners and their successors. Some religious covenants are required by theological mandates, but many are not. This Article examines the phenomenon of religious covenants as both a private law and public law problem. This Article concludes that most, but not all, of the religious …

Reimaging The Governance Of College Sports After Alston, John T. Holden, Marc Edelman, Thomas A. Baker Iii, Andrew G. Shuman
Florida Law Review
The summer of 2021 marked a major inflection point in the external governance of college sports after nearly half a century of federal and state governments taking a hands-off approach regarding the rights of college athletes. First, nearly all at once several states passed laws granting college athletes the right to endorse products. Next, in its first antitrust decision concerning the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) since 1984, the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the NCAA’s longstanding restraints on providing unlimited educational benefits to college athletes violated federal antitrust law. Additionally, Congress began discussing the lack of medical …

The Importance Of Recognizing Truth, Goodness, And Beauty: C. S. Lewis’S Antidote To The Poison Of Subjectivism, David H. Mcilroy
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
T aken in isolation, The Abolition of Man is different from most of C. S. Lewis’s other works. It is not a work of fiction or a work of expressly Christian apologetics. It is, however, rightly recognized by Dyer and Watson as “the lynchpin for understanding of all of [Lewis’s] work.”1 The thesis set out in The Abolition of Man is foundational to C. S. Lewis’s worldview. Lewis explored its implications in the third novel in his scientific trilogy, That Hideous Strength, which Lewis expressly described as a story whose moral was “the serious “point” which I have tried to …

Integrating Civic Spirituality And Civic Disposition To Build Ethical Citizen Character, Sukron Mazid, Atsani Wulansari, Imroatun Hasanah
Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan
This research aims to explore and combine the concepts of civic spirituality and disposition to build ethical citizens' character. These two concepts complement each other, with civic spirituality focusing on religious values in society and civic disposition on civic attitudes that support active participation and responsibility. This research used the literature method, analysing relevant literature and theories on civic education, spirituality, and ethics. The results showed that the integration of civic spirituality and civic disposition can be a solid foundation for building the character of ethical, moral, and socially responsible citizens. This integration forms ethical citizens through religious values, such …

Assessment and Reporting
This self-regulation skill development framework was developed to address the challenges associated with teaching and assessing self-regulation. It provides a general definition of self-regulation and describes this construct as it applies in classroom-based learning. This framework synthesises and harmonises existing theory and research on self-regulation. It outlines self-regulation processes along prescribed strands and aspects that are informed by evidence. The strands contained within the framework are 1. Cognitive regulating; 2. Behavioural regulating; and 3. Emotional regulating. The strands are further broken down into aspects to inform teaching and assessment.

From Africa To Appalachia: The Tie That Binds, The Reece Museum, East Tennessee State University
The Reece Museum Exhibition Publications
The Reece Museum is home to a communal collection of artifacts that help us remember and retell stories that are important to our identities as a community. The objects we choose to collect, display, and research act as historical documents that form the foundation of the lore that comprises our living narratives, which are “ever evolving, out of the stories of our most recent ancestors” (Bastet and Houlbrook 2023, 188). The movement of collections from personal stories and belongings into collective and institutional artifacts is something I spend a lot of time thinking about.

A Socioeconomic Analysis Of Fashion Entrepreneurs And The Use Of Self-Branding To Influence Consumer Behavior, Jasmine Gibbs-Stepter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The fashion industry is widely recognized as a significant sector within the global economy, crucially driving trends, creating jobs, and shaping culture. Despite its prominence, entrepreneurs from marginalized socioeconomic backgrounds often encounter considerable hurdles in establishing their businesses and sustaining them over time. These challenges manifest in various forms, including access to vital financial resources, insufficient networking opportunities, and restricted entry into lucrative markets, making it difficult for these entrepreneurs to compete in a dynamic and competitive landscape.
The rise of social media, with platforms like Instagram leading the charge, has ushered in a new era for fashion entrepreneurs. As …

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset–with data collected between 2020 and 2022 –to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that configural and metric invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional …

Tree-Equity And Environmental Justice Discourses Among Urban Forestry Professionals In Portland: Current Impacts And Future Implications, Axcelle Deone Bell
Dissertations and Theses
Urban tree equity is critical for addressing environmental justice and mitigating the effects of climate change in cities. This study investigates how professionals in Portland's urban forestry sector conceptualize and implement tree equity, focusing on equity and justice discourses. Through 27 semi-structured interviews with 29 professionals from government agencies and NGOs, I examine how these discourses shape decisions regarding tree planting, distribution, and maintenance, particularly in underserved communities. The analysis draws on political ecology, systems dynamics, and structuration theory to explore the systemic barriers perpetuating inequities in tree canopy distribution. The findings reveal tensions between different approaches to equity, such …

Considering What Counts: Inside United States Child Maltreatment Statistics, Keith R. Johnson, Joel Best
Numeracy
The counting process which produces statistics is a human enterprise that reflects the needs and interests of the counters. This is clear in the case of the social problem of child abuse. Many different social groups and subprofessions are located in government bureaucracies organized to protect children and preserve families. Official statistics about how many children are abused (officially “maltreated”) vary markedly among the different states. The magnitude of the disparities among jurisdictions cannot be explained without changing one’s perspective about the nature of official counts. They come less from measuring child maltreatment than measuring the divergent ways that state …
