Becoming A Learner: An Autoethnography, Joshua Dickinson
Becoming A Learner: An Autoethnography, Joshua Dickinson
Dissertations and Theses
It is well understood that attitudes toward language learning impact outcomes. This thesis uses autoethnography to explore the author's experiences learning German, in-class and independently, examining the interplay between motivation, attitudes, and the learning environment. I analyze personal journals and notes, employing graphic storytelling to illustrate their emotional journey. This paper draws upon existing literature on second language acquisition, particularly focusing on Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System and Ushioda's person-in-context approach. The study reveals how personal beliefs, self-doubt, and the limitations of traditional classroom settings impacted my motivation and ultimately, how reflection facilitated a renewed commitment to learning. In conclusion, …

BACKGROUND: The impact of ambient temperature on population health has drawn increasing attention as climate change drives more extreme temperatures globally. However, little research has investigated its connection to subclinical cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to examine the impact of long-term exposure to temperature on coronary artery calcification (CAC) among middle-aged Black and White adults in four U.S. areas with varying climate and weather conditions.
METHODS: This study compiled long-term environmental temperature data and individual coronary artery Agatston score (0 vs. >0) from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study. It employed logistic regression and examined the influences …

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community
Social work field education programs have experienced changes throughout time, including adaptations to supervision of students in field education settings. Monitoring and developing field education supervision is an essential component of ensuring high-quality practicum experiences and satisfaction among both social work students and field instructors. Most recently, the COVID-19 global pandemic led most social work students and field instructors to a rapid shift in practicum placements from in-person to virtual learning; within the process, supervision changed as well. This study includes feedback from a small group of BSW students, MSW students, and field instructors regarding this transition in placement and …
The Role Of A Mother In 2022 America, Hannah Wellens
The Role Of A Mother In 2022 America, Hannah Wellens
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Familial roles, household work distribution, and opinions concerning the operation of a household have been a popular topic of discussion within recent years. Many people push for fathers and mothers to take on equal amounts of housework and childcare duties, but previous research suggests that this often fails to happen. This paper uses 2022 survey data to investigate how demographic characteristics can predict who does the chores in the home, and how an individual believes a home should operate. Chi-Square tests, Fisher’s Exact tests, and logistic regression models show evidence that sex does still influence who is responsible for household …

Assessing The Improvement Of Intercultural Competence And The Development Of Civic-Minded Graduates At The University Of Minnesota Morris, Catherine Van Wey
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
In a world where cultures intersect constantly, intercultural competence, the ability to connect and communicate effectively across cultural boundaries, is crucial for driving meaningful change. Fostering global citizenship, the awareness of one’s role in a shared global community, and the commitment to a fairer, more equitable planet are vital for cultivating culturally attuned, civic-minded graduates. This perspective aligns with institutions like the University of Minnesota Morris, a four-year public liberal arts university and COPLAC member, in their shared mission to prepare students as collaborative change-makers within the communities they engage with now and in the future. However, evaluating these skills …
Reproductive Labour: Preventing Babies, Making Babies, And Growing Babies, Elizabeth J. O’Reilly
Reproductive Labour: Preventing Babies, Making Babies, And Growing Babies, Elizabeth J. O’Reilly
Journal of International Women's Studies
During her reproductive years, a Canadian heterosexual cisgender woman will likely engage in the labour of preventing pregnancy, trying to achieve pregnancy, and/or being pregnant. While each stage of reproduction involves significant time and energy, the labour tied to preventing pregnancy, conceiving, and growing life is undervalued, unrecognized, and rendered invisible. Much of the work around reproduction involves not just cognitive function, but also a mental load and emotional labour. It is assumed that women need to do this labour as a pregnancy exists within her reproductive body; however, this assumption fails to acknowledge the reality of how laborious each …

Platform work has gained significant recognition due to the rapid growth of the digital economy, which offers new opportunities for workers. However, inadequate regulatory frameworks in Malaysia have led to various human rights concerns, particularly regarding the protection of workers' rights, such as social security, fair remuneration and safe working conditions. Furthermore, the challenge of providing worker protections must be balanced with the flexible nature of the gig economy. Thus, this study explored the evolving legal landscape surrounding the protection of platform workers’ rights in Malaysia from both legal and human rights perspectives. It examines the role of business and …

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
This paper aims to evaluate the appointment process of Constitutional Court Judges in Indonesia. A guarantee of the judiciary independence is a foundation of a modern democratic state because a judge’s appointment depends on a selection process. Using normative and empirical legal study, the study shows that Indonesia does not have a standardized selection process among the proposing organs regarding assessment and procedure. The selection mechanism is decentralized. It relies on the proposing organs respectively. On the other hand, South Korea has a more standardized selection process, especially on confirmation hearings organized by the National Assembly. The Korean model, which …

Apostille Convention And Its Ramification Following The Accession Of The Indonesian Legal Practices, David Tan
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Indonesia has acceded to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention in early 2021. The government decided the move based on the current endeavors to enhance the quality of civil services, investment rate, government transparency, and recovery efforts after the worldwide pandemic. At the same time, Indonesia’s initiative to accede to the convention is surprisingly unimpressive, considering the benefits for Indonesia due to its urgency. The study reinforces the present perspective of apostille to contribute to the handful of scholarly papers dealing with the apostille in the realm of private international law. This study employed a normative juridical research method with secondary …

Since the Constitutional Court reviewed the elucidation, several legal issues have arisen regarding law elucidation in the Indonesian Legislation System. The first is the formal (binding force) and material (material content) legal status of the law elucidation. The second is the extent to which the Constitutional Court can review the law elucidation. This study employed normative juridical and evaluative methods; and generates several conclusions. First, the law elucidation has binding legal force. Second, there are two forms of the elucidation content: (1) interpretation in the form …

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
The Third Amendment to the 1945 Constitution stipulates that one of the requirements to become a presidential candidate is an Indonesian natural-born citizen who has never received another citizenship of his/her own volition. The requirement can create confusion and dissenting opinions to determine persons considered natural-born citizens and methods to prove it. This study explores the significances of determining a natural-born citizen as a requirement to become a presidential candidate and its implications. Through a socio-legal approach, this study concludes that the natural-born citizen requirement's significance is to eliminate racial discrimination from the previous requirement of a “native Indonesian” president …

This study employs normative legal approach, which examines the ambiguity of norms of restitution forms. Currently, restitution is interpreted merely as reimbursement for victim. This study collected primary and …

The Incident of George Floyd’s death reminds people of the peril of discrimination that still exists within the American society. The incident has triggered worldwide reactions from people who feel sympathy for the victim and reject racism. To eliminate racial discrimination, every modern society needs to remove any negative paradigm towards intergroup relation. In the context of the United States, the American Government has the responsibility to protect the rights of citizens from any forms of discrimination. That includes racial discrimination. In addition, people have to be reminiscent of the danger of racial discrimination in the modern era. The danger …

The amendments to the 1945 Constitution allegedly are not in line with the expectations of a democratic constitution. In fact, the role of the people in four amendments to the 1945 Constitution was very limited. The people who were involved in the amendment processes represented limited number of groups. Incidentally, only people with important and dominant powers were involved. The people were also not involved from the beginning of the amendment processes. Therefore, the role of the people in the amendments had not been carried out optimally. The results of the study show that the role of the people directly …

The modern international law, not only imitates, but the substance is truly the European values and traditions. The European nations produce the norm of international law with a clear objective is to divide the world into "selves" (European nations) and "others" (non-European nations). This is exacerbated by European colonialism and imperialism, which allow their values and traditions to become hegemonic norms that ultimately produce the paradigm of "otherness" in international law. Non-European nations are "others", which are considered only as users of the European values. The “otherness” paradigm in international law is resulted from the universal claim of the European …

Abstract
In the aftermath of Bali Bombing 2002, which is considered the biggest terrorist attack in Indonesia, the Indonesian government launched the so-called ‘war against terrorism’. Subsequently, the government established and applied laws on terrorism and formed a special counter-terrorism police squad: The Detachment 88. A state body that coordinates counter-terrorism measures is quickly established, the National Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNPT –Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Terorisme). Therefore, terrorism in Indonesia has been considered a ‘big and serious business’ since 2002. It also raises a serious question in defining and judging terror crime. Indeed, Indonesia has the law of terrorism since …

Abstract
The liberalism principles have influenced the whole life aspects of the nation and the state of Indonesia. On the political aspect, the principles influence the elections in Indonesia from the lowest (village head election) to the highest (presidential election) levels. The liberal principles are not in accordance with the principles of Pancasila as the national philosophy and the source of law (staatsfundamental norm) of Indonesia. The liberal democratic principles cause high cost democracy. They create the conditions of ‘free fight’ and ‘homo homini lupus’, as well as many potential corruption practices in villages. In addition, it …

The objective of the establishment of the International Criminal Court by the Rome Statute 1998 is to achieve global justice. The spirit to end impunity established the ICC to respond to four previous criminal tribunals that have been criticized as victor’s justice and selective justice. The ICC has material jurisdiction on the four most serious crimes: crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes, and crimes of aggression. These crimes can be committed in any part of the world, including Southeast Asia. The latest case was crimes against humanity that lead to genocide of the Rohingya people in Myanmar, not to mention …
