The Formation Of The American League In Baseball; Changes In American Society And Culture That Contributed To The Demand For More Baseball In The Late 19th Century, Shawn M. Smith

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

The second professional major league (the American League) in baseball came about in response to the demand for more baseball entertainment due to the increased amount of leisure time Americans had in the late-19th century as society started the shift from an agricultural based lifestyle to a culture who worked predominantly in factory work.

The culture and society of the day changed drastically due to changing economic conditions of the time period. Due to monumental changes in industry, the vast majority of the population had shifted from working in an agrarian society to working in factories as a result of …

Using The Narrative Roles Questionnaire Within An Academic Setting, Toby Stipp Apr 2025

Using The Narrative Roles Questionnaire Within An Academic Setting, Toby Stipp

Student Theses and Dissertations

Criminal profiling has become a useful tool for many agencies when investigating a variety of crimes. The proposed study used a questionnaire originally designed for criminal behavior and profiling, the Narrative Roles Questionnaire (NRQ), and observed if it could be translated to an academic setting pertaining to academic cheating. A pilot study involving definitions of the four narratives in the NRQ revealed that both the Professional and Victim narratives are more likely to be the narratives that academic cheaters would acknowledge. In the proposed study, participants were asked to write down a cheating scenario and fill out the full NRQ …

Splitting Equality: Access To Gender-Affirming Care In The Fourth Circuit, Gilbert D. Jones Apr 2025

Splitting Equality: Access To Gender-Affirming Care In The Fourth Circuit, Gilbert D. Jones

Journal of Law and Health

This Note critically examines the evolving legal landscape surrounding transgender individuals' access to gender-affirming care in the United States, focusing on two pivotal cases before the Fourth Circuit: Kadel v. Folwell (North Carolina) and Fain v. Crouch (West Virginia). These cases present a constitutional and statutory challenge to the exclusion of medically necessary gender-affirming care from state health plans, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Note contextualizes these lawsuits within a broader historical trajectory of transgender rights, highlighting legal and cultural milestones that have shaped access …

Discovering The Cultural Impacts On Asian American, Pacific Islander (Aapi) Occupations From Adolescent Experiences, Jasmine Chew, Karen Park

Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Background: Among the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) population, there is a gap in mental health (MH) utilization and seeking support for anxiety and depression (Wu et al., 2021). Adolescents experience a higher risk for self-isolating behaviors and struggle to find appropriate support (Ai et al., 2022; Santos & Kawabata, 2023). Based on cultural and socio-political contexts, what is the occupational impact on AAPI adolescents? How do cultural factors impact the utilization of community-based MH services?

Method: A convergent mixed methods study of unobtrusive data (n = 14), surveys (n = 29), and interviews (n = 4) was …

The Ethics Of Drawing Illness: Interdisciplinary Negotiations In A Participatory Graphic Narrative Project, Veronica Moretti, Annalisa Plava, Stefano Ratti Apr 2025

The Ethics Of Drawing Illness: Interdisciplinary Negotiations In A Participatory Graphic Narrative Project, Veronica Moretti, Annalisa Plava, Stefano Ratti

The Qualitative Report

This paper illustrates how the design of health-related comics contributes to reflecting on the methodological and ethical challenges of qualitative research. In line with Comics-Based Research (CBR), we demonstrate how creating a comic on medical topics emerges from continuous and iterative dialogue among multiple voices: patients, sociologists, artists, and physicians. On an ethical and methodological level, our study explores the creation of a comic book about pancreatic diseases with varying stages of severity and possibilities for cure and recovery. Constructing a comic in such contexts provides a new way of visualizing and understanding the illness experience. Representing traumatic memory in …

Towards An Embodied And Graphic Based Qualitative Sociology: Methodological Reflections On Reflexivity And Pictorial Embodiment In The Field Of Health And Illness, Alice Scavarda, Barbara Grüning

The Qualitative Report

The aim of this paper is to discuss the comicisation of qualitative sociology, i.e., the use of comics as research methods and analytical tools in sociology, drawing from case studies related to illness and neurodivergence. In the first part, we will pinpoint how comics as qualitative research methods enhance the reflexivity of sociologists themselves in the various phases of their research projects: from the definition of a case study to the choice of research and analysis techniques up to the communication of research outputs. In line with El Refaie’s (2012) concept of pictorial embodiment, we will show how producing drawn …

These students struggle with more than typical academic challenges; they deal with financial pressures, the complexities of adapting to a new culture, strict visa rules, and a lack of targeted support from their institutions. This project examines their experiences, drawing from research on how factors like emotional and cultural intelligence, mental health, peer relationships, and systemic inequalities affect their educational paths. Using Critical Race Theory and Social Identity Theory as foundations, this work shows how deep-rooted inequities in U.S. higher education make …

Beyond The Barriers Of Silent Walls And Systemic Chains: How Do Black Boys In A Southern Urban Context Develop Both Racial/ Ethnic And Scholarly Identities And How Do They Navigate The Systemic Barriers That Shape Their Identity Development?, Meah Yvette King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation offers a critical examination of the intersection between racial/ethnic and scholarly identity development among Black male adolescents, specifically those aged 18-19, within the socio-cultural and educational context of a Southern urban environment. By exploring the lived experiences of these boys, the study investigates how they navigate pervasive systemic barriers, including institutionalized racism, racial stereotyping, and inequitable educational practices, all of which significantly shape their academic trajectories and racial self-conception. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Critical Race Theory, Social Identity Theory, and Bioecological Systems Theory, this qualitative inquiry employs a robust multi-method approach, integrating semi-structured interviews, life mapping, …

Community-Level Analysis Of Anti-Asian Hate Crime, Jisoo Cho, Jinuk Jeong, Christopher Han-Fai Seto

Publications and Research

Motivated by the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study examines the community characteristics associated with the likelihood of their occurrence from 2020 to 2023 through interracial conflict and social disorganization perspectives. Analyzing data from the New York City Police Department and the American Community Survey across 2,198 census tracts, we find that communities with higher levels of Asian population, racial heterogeneity, and residential instability have higher odds of experiencing anti-Asian hate crime. However, concentrated disadvantage and defended neighborhoods (White, Black, and Hispanic) are not significant across all estimated models. These findings have important implications for …

Do Gun-Purchase Waiting Periods Save Lives?, Grace E. Arnold, Mitchell Blaine Priestley Apr 2025

Do Gun-Purchase Waiting Periods Save Lives?, Grace E. Arnold, Mitchell Blaine Priestley

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the impact of gun-purchase waiting periods on suicide rates using county-level mortality data from 1991-2019. We find that waiting periods are associated with a reduction in both firearm and overall suicide rates of approximately 5% and 2%, respectively. Novelly, we find that counties that are within 50 miles from a state without a waiting period experience no statistically significant reduction in suicides. Our findings reveal that the decrease in suicides under a waiting period is driven by counties that are more than 50 miles from a non-restricted neighboring state.

Dress Codes And High School, Robert Johnson Apr 2025

Dress Codes And High School, Robert Johnson

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper examined the impact of dress codes and uniforms within high schools. Dress codes affect many high school students. Proponents of dress codes argue that they establish safety within a school, and this safety allows students to focus on learning. Research shows, however, that dress code enforcement disproportionately affects girls and minorities within a school. In looking at this research, the following research question emerged: In light of what is known about pedagogy in the contemporary educational setting, what is the relationship between the use of dress codes in high schools and student relationships with school? In attempting to …

Smer, Anti-Western Populism, And Political Violence In Post-Communist Slovakia, Augustus Giller

Bates College Journal of Political Studies

Europe today is characterized by an abundance of new, right-wing populist parties which have established themselves as signifi cant and formidable players in European parliaments. A fl ashpoint of this rise has been in the former Eastern Bloc, where right-wing populist parties can both push conservative social policies and use rhetoric surrounding the ongoing war in Ukraine to command attention. This approach can be seen in the Smer-Social Democracy party, which has risen to be a mainstay in Slovakia. Like many other former Eastern Bloc states, Slovakia underwent a substantial post-communist transition process that had lasting impacts on the nation, …
