The Effects Of Goal Setting On Sports Performance Of Competitive Athletes: A Meta-Analytic Review, Kelsi L. Crotts Apr 2025

The Effects Of Goal Setting On Sports Performance Of Competitive Athletes: A Meta-Analytic Review, Kelsi L. Crotts

Theses and Dissertations

Goal setting is widely used by athletes as a strategy to enhance sports performance. Despite its theoretical foundation in Goal Setting Theory (GST), empirical research has yielded mixed findings regarding its effectiveness in competitive athletic settings. Prior meta-analyses have included studies across various skill levels and motor tasks unrelated to sport, limiting their applicability to experienced athletes. The current meta-analytical review aimed to (1) evaluate the impact of goal setting on sports performance among competitive athletes, (2) examine the influence of goal characteristics such as difficulty, specificity, proximity, type, source, and feedback, and (3) identify methodological limitations in existing research …

Fractured Spectacle: Contrasting Reactions To Itaewon Stampede Across Korean And English-Language Networked Publics, Jin-A Choi, Saif Shahin Apr 2025

Fractured Spectacle: Contrasting Reactions To Itaewon Stampede Across Korean And English-Language Networked Publics, Jin-A Choi, Saif Shahin

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

Late modern society has been conceptualized as a spectacle, a metaphor that brings to light not only its commodification but also the benumbing impact of mass media on the audience’s political agency. This study turns attention to the spectacle in the age of social media. Building on a growing body of research on the spectacle of suffering, we compare reactions to the 2022 Itaewon Halloween stampede, which claimed more than 150 lives, across Korean-language and English-language posts on the social networking platform, X (previously Twitter). Our research draws on two computational techniques, topic modeling and network analysis, to examine …

The “Chains” Of Command: Confronting The Role Of Gender In Perceptions Of Female Service Members’ Professionalism, Dani Schulz Apr 2025

The “Chains” Of Command: Confronting The Role Of Gender In Perceptions Of Female Service Members’ Professionalism, Dani Schulz

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research investigates whether there is a connection between gender and perceptions of military professionalism. The military is a highly-masculinized workplace which women have not occupied for long; as such, this research aims to discover whether military members perceive women in the military as professional. To do so, the researcher used a survey with both quantitative and qualitative questions to discover what a sample of Army National Guard soldiers' self-perceptions reveal about their views of women in the military. The researcher also covertly observed two weeks of Army National Guard training to learn whether the sample's behavior toward women in …

A Punishment That Harms Everyone And Benefits No One: An Analysis Of The Use Of Solitary Confinement Under Common Sociological Theories Of Punishment, Allison Lampert Apr 2025

A Punishment That Harms Everyone And Benefits No One: An Analysis Of The Use Of Solitary Confinement Under Common Sociological Theories Of Punishment, Allison Lampert

Et Cetera

In the United States, experts estimate that nearly 100,000 incarcerated individuals are held in solitary confinement. While individuals can be held in solitary confinement for a variety of reasons, many are placed in lockdown because they have untreated mental illnesses, have committed some sort of minor disciplinary infraction, are need of protection, or for unpopular personal beliefs. In other words, solitary confinement is used as a broad catch-all to a wide range of low-level and nonviolent misbehaviors. This note argues that solitary confinement is an unjustifiable mode of punishment as analyzed under two commonly cited sociological theories of punishment: retributivism …

Assessment Of Current Online Sexual Child Abuse Research, Charlotte Fry Apr 2025

Assessment Of Current Online Sexual Child Abuse Research, Charlotte Fry

2025 Student Academic Showcase

As the virtual world continues to expand, online sexual child abuse (OSCA) is becoming an increasingly urgent issue, with various forms of technological exploitation, such as nonconsensual image misuse and coerced image recruitment, emerging as methods of harm. A national survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire found that 16% of young adults in the United States reported experiencing at least one form of online sexual abuse before turning 18. However, victims of OSCA often delay disclosure, sometimes not coming forward until years later. This delay is often due to fear of the offender discovering the disclosure, feelings of …

Campus Exploration, Kacie Lingle

2025 Student Academic Showcase

Having available and sufficient study and community spaces on a college campus can impact the productivity and happiness of the students who attend. A survey was used to identify the locations where Lindenwood students perform certain activities such as studying alone and spending time with a group as well as to collect students’ thoughts on the current spaces on campus including optional suggestions. Students were asked if the spaces fit their purpose, if they feel satisfied with these spaces, and if they believe these spaces could impact their college experience. Preliminary common themes include satisfaction with the types of spaces, …

Barriers To Sports Participation Faced By Disabled Individuals, Bri Nelson Apr 2025

Barriers To Sports Participation Faced By Disabled Individuals, Bri Nelson

2025 Student Academic Showcase

My project is an exploration of the barriers to sports participation that disabled individuals face aside from their disability itself. The first barrier to sports participation that you might experience as a disabled individual would likely be psychological. Negative societal perceptions and portrayals of disabled people can diminish the confidence and self-belief necessary to pursue new athletic activities. Activities surrounding sports participation aside from the sport itself can be more time consuming for disabled athletes- getting ready before leaving the house, changing into the right clothes, and getting equipment on and together can take much longer for someone who is …

Empowering Undecided Students: Fostering Self-Authorship Through Academic Advising Practices, Erin E. Westberg Apr 2025

Empowering Undecided Students: Fostering Self-Authorship Through Academic Advising Practices, Erin E. Westberg

Masters Projects

More students are entering college undecided about their major, yet many academic advisors are not equipped with the proper tools to holistically support this population. Undecided students often experience self-doubt, external pressures, and difficulty identifying a major that aligns with their personal interests and goals. Without holistic support, this may delay their time to graduation or cause them to choose a path that doesn’t feel right for them. The purpose of this project is to provide academic advisors with a framework to better support undecided students through the use of self-authorship. This approach encourages students to reflect on their values, …

The Evolution Of Women's Rights In Iran, Rebecca G. Buis Apr 2025

The Evolution Of Women's Rights In Iran, Rebecca G. Buis

Senior Honors Theses

Over the past 46 years, Iran has undergone change; substantial change that will impact the lives of women for generations to come. The ones who have been at the forefront of this challenge are women. Islamic extremism and religion have created a substantial shift in the lives of women over the past half century. As time has gone on, more women have protested, leading to an increased resistance. Prior to the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Iranian women experienced increased liberties and freedoms. However, with the rise of Khomeini, their freedoms were increasingly replaced with expectations as to how they should …

Assessing Information Literacy In A Living Learning Community: An Academic Library Case Study, Sara Mccaslin, Sean Kinder

The Southeastern Librarian

Assessment of information literacy efforts can impact college students’ success and retention. Library outreach and partnerships with teaching faculty, especially those targeted towards first-year students, are important. Library involvement with High Impact Practices (HIPs) including Living Learning Com-munities provide librarians with an assessment-rich environment to connect information literacy with student success and retention. This case study sought to assess the impact of information literacy library instruction on first-year Living Learning Community (LLC) Criminology students and asked the follow-ing question: Are the general information literacy class and the Special Collections information literacy class beneficial to Criminology LLC students? The authors learned …

Age–Period–Cohort Effects Of Adult Cigarette Smoking In The United States, 1971–2020, Dinko Kranjac, Ashley W. Kranjac Apr 2025

Age–Period–Cohort Effects Of Adult Cigarette Smoking In The United States, 1971–2020, Dinko Kranjac, Ashley W. Kranjac

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

The rates of cigarette use among American adults have dropped substantially throughout the last six decades, yet smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. It is crucial to identify the putative time-varying population-level factors of age, period, and cohort that influenced the decrease in smoking prevalence so we can maintain the downward trend. We used 49 years of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and hierarchical age–period–cohort (HAPC) analysis to examine lifecycle, historical, and generational distribution of smoking among Americans aged 18–74 years old. The prevalence of smoking has …

A Tale Of Two Faiths: Contemporary Protestantism In The Spanish-Speaking Catholic World, Jackson B. Mitchell Apr 2025

A Tale Of Two Faiths: Contemporary Protestantism In The Spanish-Speaking Catholic World, Jackson B. Mitchell

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the shifting religious landscape of the Spanish-speaking Catholic world through the lens of Protestant growth, particularly Pentecostal and Evangelical movements. Beginning with a historical account of Spain’s Catholic hegemony and its colonial export of Catholicism to Latin America, the study traces how Latin America’s religious identity has gradually diverged from its Spanish roots. Over the past half-century, Protestantism has grown rapidly across Latin America, challenging Catholic dominance and reshaping the region’s spiritual and social fabric.

The thesis then turns back to Spain, where rising immigration from Latin America and changing cultural dynamics have facilitated the reintroduction of …

Reimagining Faculty Retention And Governance In Regional Public Universities, Cabdulcasiis Maxamed Ciise Apr 2025

Reimagining Faculty Retention And Governance In Regional Public Universities, Cabdulcasiis Maxamed Ciise

Masters Projects

This project addresses the faculty retention crisis in regional public universities (RPUs) by examining how neoliberal governance, characterized by performance metrics, market-driven funding, and corporate leadership, has restructured academic work and eroded shared governance. The purpose was to explore faculty burnout, disengagement, and leadership gaps, and to develop resources that support more ethical and collaborative institutional cultures. Using Labor Process Theory, Critical Social Theory, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior as guiding frameworks, this literature-based project analyzed the structural and ideological conditions driving faculty attrition and institutional instability. Research included an extensive review of peer-reviewed literature on neoliberalism in higher education, faculty …

Supply Chain Innovation: A Framework Of Public Procurement As A Demand-Side Innovation Driver, Peter Adjei-Bamfo, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Ferry Jie, Kerry Brown, Reza Kiani Mavi Apr 2025

Supply Chain Innovation: A Framework Of Public Procurement As A Demand-Side Innovation Driver, Peter Adjei-Bamfo, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Ferry Jie, Kerry Brown, Reza Kiani Mavi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Purpose: Much of the supply chain innovation (SCI) literature has focused on innovation as driven by supply-side factors that often lead to incremental product changes. Such marginal innovation outcomes make suppliers less responsive to government buyers’ innovation needs for addressing societal challenges. Building on this observation, this article conceptualises how a demand-side innovation driver, namely public procurement, influences SCI radically and incrementally from downstream. Design/methodology/approach Employing the conceptual research approach and following established guidelines for building theory and conceptual development in management and supply chain research, we re-examine the SCI literature for existing assumptions about government innovation procurement and explain …

Assessing Relationship Type, Weapon Use, Weapon Type, And Injury In Sexual Assault Kit Backlog Data, Madeline Faye Stewart Apr 2025

Assessing Relationship Type, Weapon Use, Weapon Type, And Injury In Sexual Assault Kit Backlog Data, Madeline Faye Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This paper explores the familial and stranger relationship dynamics between victims and suspects/offenders in sexual assault cases. It assesses the likelihood of weapon use and identifies the specific types of weapons involved. This analysis addresses gaps in existing research by examining the relationship between weapon type, weapon use, and relationship type. The study focuses on three key aspects: (1) the types of weapons used during an assault, (2) the nature of victim-suspect/offender relationships, and (3) the presence of any injuries. By analyzing these data, the research aims to identify trends in weapon use and determine whether certain relationships correlate with …

“We Live In A Spiritual Country”: The Associations Among Health Literacy, Quality Of Life, And Religious Spiritual Personal Beliefs Among The Nigerian Population, Rebecca Aderoju Apr 2025

“We Live In A Spiritual Country”: The Associations Among Health Literacy, Quality Of Life, And Religious Spiritual Personal Beliefs Among The Nigerian Population, Rebecca Aderoju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the complex interplay between health literacy (HL), quality of life (QoL), and spiritual and religious beliefs (SRPB) among underserved populations in Nigeria. Despite increasing awareness of healthcare options, many Nigerians continue to rely on faith-based healing practices due to deeply rooted religious and cultural traditions, economic barriers, and systemic healthcare limitations. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research incorporates both survey data and focus group discussions to investigate the relationship that Nigerians make among these variables. This study employs the Social Ecological Model (SEM) to explore how individual, interpersonal, community, organizational, and policy factors shape health behaviors and …

A Pedagogy Of Howling: Testimonies Of Pedagogies For Peace At The University For Peace, Stephanie Marie Knox Steiner, Abigail Rose Ciccarone, Cecile Adrian, Dhvani Rajen Thakkar, Luiza Duarte, Sarah Jampol

Feminist Pedagogy

In this critical commentary, we (five masters’ students and one faculty member) share testimonies of what has felt essential in our experience of pedagogies for peace at the University for Peace (UPEACE). Co-creating this article in a collective voice[1] is a living example of the heart of our pedagogical praxis of disrupting separation and expressing interconnectedness through collaboration. We practice as we write, together.

Conversations Before The Conversation: Readying Dissidence Through Norm-Setting, Ashley N. Watson Apr 2025

Conversations Before The Conversation: Readying Dissidence Through Norm-Setting, Ashley N. Watson

Feminist Pedagogy

How can educators speak truth to power in ways that decenter whiteness while supporting student learning across different levels of awareness? What does the right balance of challenge and support look like in today’s unpredictable college environment? These questions are drawn from my experience as a Black predoctoral fellow teaching “Intercultural Dialogue” at a traditionally white public liberal arts university in rural Minnesota. This paper—both a reflection and recommendations for practice—outlines my approach to co-constructing and scaffolding a conducive learning environment rooted in emancipatory pedagogy.
