Academic Staff Perceptions Of Factors Underlying Program Completion By Australian Indigenous Nursing Students, Roianne West, Kim Usher, Kim Foster, Lee Stewart Mar 2014

Academic Staff Perceptions Of Factors Underlying Program Completion By Australian Indigenous Nursing Students, Roianne West, Kim Usher, Kim Foster, Lee Stewart

The Qualitative Report

An increase in the number of Indigenous health professionals is one way to help reduce the poor health outcomes of Australia’s Indigenous people. However, while Indigenous students are enrolling in Australian tertiary undergraduate nursing courses in increasing numbers, their completion rates remain lower than non-Indigenous students and many barriers hinder course completion. This critical interpretive qualitative study explores academic staff perceptions of factors enabling successful course completions by Indigenous nursing students from universities in Queensland, Australia. Content analysis of data revealed five themes: (a) Individual student characteristics; (b) Institutional structures, systems, and processes; (c) Relationships, connections, and partnerships; (d) Family …

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities In Faith Communities: Perspectives Of Catholic Religious Leaders, Mazna Patka Mar 2014

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities In Faith Communities: Perspectives Of Catholic Religious Leaders, Mazna Patka

Dissertations and Theses

Community psychology is concerned with the relationship between individuals and social systems in community contexts, but the field has under-explored the role of religious organizations in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Worldwide, most people identify with a religion, and congregations serve as important mediating structure that creates a sense of community and provides linkages between individuals and society. There may be significant benefits to religious participation, including greater life satisfaction, health, and quality of life. Such benefits may be especially important to individuals with intellectual disability who generally experience poorer outcomes. However, we know very little about the …

Q-Summit Gathering

We are powerful and fierce. We are who we are because we face many obstacles daily. We are who we are because we are resilient. When our daily interactions push us into feeling that we must live in survivor/survival mode, we feel spent and stressed. Keeping care of ourselves keeps us ready to rise above the bull. This workshop will serve as a space for sharing the many ways we remain resilient and will encourage participants to have fun while taping into our collective and individual power(s) of self-preservation. We will focus on naming sustainable self-care practices and building tool …

Queerness And Christianity, Chris Parks Mar 2014

Queerness And Christianity, Chris Parks

Q-Summit Gathering

As the Queer movement progresses within our context, less and less are we bombarded by secular defenses against queerness. Now, the movement is increasingly having to navigate the world of faith and specifically Christianity. This discussion-based workshop will cultivate the tools to effectively and nonviolently navigate such a conversation. We will graze over explanations of the clobber passages, and spend most of our time reclaiming the biblical text and strategies for connecting with someone of a deeply biblical mindset. The hope is that each young adult, no matter where they find themselves on ideas of faith, will be empowered to …

So Sochi...: Understanding The Complex Landscape Of International Queer Politics And Interventions, Erik Lampmann Mar 2014

So Sochi...: Understanding The Complex Landscape Of International Queer Politics And Interventions, Erik Lampmann

Q-Summit Gathering

The advent of the 2014 Sochi Games generated a flurry of debate among queer folks as to the role of domestic activists in internationals justice movements. We saw some major corporations attacked via boycotts due to their business relationships in Russia; we saw other corporations exalted for their 'social responsibility' in promoting LGBTQ interests. As this movement weighs intervention in Russian LGBTQ politics alongside other travesties- e.g. the state-sanctioned regime of anti-gay violence in Uganda- situating our own actions within an increasingly global landscape becomes increasingly important. I'm interested in pushing participants to think critically about policy or movement interventions …

Artist Caucus, Jon Henry, Jasmin Ullah Mar 2014

Artist Caucus, Jon Henry, Jasmin Ullah

Q-Summit Gathering

The caucus will allow artists to express their full potentials in the supportive and creative environment space. Arts have been a prevalent component of queer activism, politics, and identity formation. Queer artists face additional barriers like lack funding, commercialization, censorship, commodification, and oversight within their field and in relationship to others. Creating a meeting space for queer artists will allow for us to develop our own language and further develop our professional relationships and practices; it will further nurture and inspire the study of queer history, theory, criticism, and studio practices. Topics for discussion include history, resource sharing, advocacy, compensation, …

Legitimizing The Other: Are You Gay Enough?, Clara Kerckhove, Hayley Angel

Q-Summit Gathering

Discussion will be focused on understanding how and why society conceptualizes sexual orientation as black-and-white and ultimately fails to recognize asexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality, and even the fluidity of sexuality over a lifetime as legitimate. The discussion will be open to people of all sexualities. However, the focus will be on the erasure of non-gay sexual orientations.

Framing Sex Work Activism: A Sociological View, Nancy Kannampuzha Mar 2014

Framing Sex Work Activism: A Sociological View, Nancy Kannampuzha

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

This presentation is based on a book project providing an interdisciplinary introduction to the topic of prostitution. Nancy Kannampuzha will review the sociological literature at the intersection of social movements and prostitution. She will report on ethnographic and interview data to reveal the most commonly used rhetorical frames pro- and anti-sex work activists use when recruiting and retaining members. She will describe the assumptions and taken-for-granted moral and ethical aspects of these claims. The literature suggests that pro- and anti-sex work activists draw upon strikingly similar notions of body ownership and empowerment.

Finding A Frame That Fits: Analyzing And Comparing Rival Framing Of American Gun Control Policy In 2013, Alexander Booker Mar 2014

Finding A Frame That Fits: Analyzing And Comparing Rival Framing Of American Gun Control Policy In 2013, Alexander Booker

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

This paper uses and expands upon the theoretical framework of political framing theory to analyze the messages that came out of different gun lobby groups during the early 2013 debate on gun control legislation that was being discussed within the United States Congress. My research question is what are the elements of a political action frame for a piece of legislation that can lead to positive or negative public opinion of it? To conduct my research I use a mixed-methods research approach to analyze recent political framing in regards to American gun control policy. For the qualitative part of the …

Child Maltreatment, Exposure To Violence, And Adolescent Weapon Carrying, Lauren P. Schroeder, Sabrina A. Karczewski, Patrick J. Fowler Phd Mar 2014

Child Maltreatment, Exposure To Violence, And Adolescent Weapon Carrying, Lauren P. Schroeder, Sabrina A. Karczewski, Patrick J. Fowler Phd

DePaul Discoveries

This study examined associations between child maltreatment, violence exposure, and gender in predicting subsequent adolescent weapon carrying. Data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well- Being, a nationally representative longitudinal study of families in contact with the child welfare system, were used. Participants included 821 youth who were followed over five years. Results from a logistic regression suggested that male youth who reported physical abuse at baseline were less likely to report carrying a weapon any time across the follow up period, while physical abuse did not predict weapon carrying in females. These counterintuitive findings demonstrated a complex …

Navigating Pregnancy And Parenthood: Work-Family Considerations For Men And Women Graduate Students In Stem And Other Disciplines, Ziyu Long, Patrice M. Buzzanell, Abigail Selzer King

ADVANCE-Purdue Gender and STEM Research Symposium

Scholars and non-academicians consider popular key advantages to be flexibility in career trajectories as well as autonomy and control over one’s schedule and the work that one chooses to do (e.g., Buzzanell & Lucas, 2006, 2013). Although academic careers seem to offer these benefits, there are questions about whether and how such flexibility actually occurs, particularly in times of pregnancy/adoption, family leave, and work-life “balance” (e.g., Stone, 2008). Implicit in academic flexibility is that graduate student careers might evidence some of the same flexibility but within institutional structures that can range from lockstep to a build-you-own-plan and timetable model. In …

Evaluation Of Women And Men Professors: How Gender Scripts Affect Students' Assessments, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Mar 2014

Evaluation Of Women And Men Professors: How Gender Scripts Affect Students' Assessments, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

ADVANCE-Purdue Gender and STEM Research Symposium

All universities strive for high quality teaching. In the late 1970’s, colleges and universities began systematically soliciting feedback from students regarding teaching. Rather than relying on colleague-evaluations, the new administrative philosophy advocated bringing in students’ own assessment of their professors. Today, these student assessments are often the only evaluation of college teaching.

The change to include students’ perspectives was particularly supported by women faculty. Ironically, some research suggests that student evaluations might be quite biased against women professor. Such a bias would not only be unfair, but it would have substantial consequences for those women faculty, since student evaluation are …

Instituting A Proactive Risk Assessment Model: The Promise And Peril Of Predictive Approaches To Student Success, John Chew, Kevin Knutson, Edwin A. Martini

Assessment in Action Conference

In this session, the presenters, (all from the College of Arts and Sciences at WMU), describe a pilot project that attempts to predict the likelihood of student persistence based on a variety of factors, including non-cognitive assessment. Led by a graduate assistant who designed the survey tool and analyzed the data, they discussed the pros and cons of such an approach and the benefits of doing such work for the professional development of graduate students.

Access To Therapy For Children With Autism: A Population-Based Analysis, Teal W. Benevides Mar 2014

Access To Therapy For Children With Autism: A Population-Based Analysis, Teal W. Benevides

Theses and Dissertations

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent a growing category of children who have special health care needs. Recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates suggest that 1 in 88 children in the United States have an ASD (CDC, 2012). Due to difficulty with communication, social skills, and restricted and/or repetitive behaviors that comprise current diagnostic criteria (APA, 2013), children with ASD require significant medical, mental health, and therapeutic supports that contribute to greater heath care utilization costs than persons without ASD (e.g., Shimabukuro, Grosse, & Rice, 2008). Therapies such as occupational, physical, and speech therapy are among …

Regulating Sex Work: Assimilation, Erotic Exceptionalism & Beyond, Adrienne D. Davis Mar 2014

Regulating Sex Work: Assimilation, Erotic Exceptionalism & Beyond, Adrienne D. Davis

Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Faculty Research

Most commentators on sex markets focus on the debate between abolitionists and those who defend and support professional sex work. This paper, instead, looks at debates within the pro-sex work camp, uncovering some unattended tensions and contradictions. It shows that, within this camp, some stress the labor aspect, urging that sex markets perpetuate a "vulnerable population" of workers, similar to others who perform highly risky and/or exploited labor, and should be regulated accordingly. In this view, sex work would be assimilated into other labor. Others, though, take a more anti-regulatory stance. They exceptionalize this form of labor, arguing that because …

Moving Beyond Regulatory Mechanisms: A Typology Of Internet Control Regimes, Richard Reid Hunt Mar 2014

Moving Beyond Regulatory Mechanisms: A Typology Of Internet Control Regimes, Richard Reid Hunt

Dissertations and Theses

This paper examines national Internet control from a policy regime perspective. The mechanisms through which governments attempt to control the Internet may be developed and implemented by different institutions and agencies, or fall outside of a formal regulatory structure entirely. As such, the totality of the institutions and practices of national Internet control is better conceptualized not as a regulatory regime, but as a control regime. After a survey of the critical policy and control dimensions, a six-part typology of control regimes is proposed. The purpose of this study and typology is exploratory. With comparative research about Internet control regimes …
