Long Hours Lasting Consequences: Children As Passive Victims In The Industrial Revolution And A Pivitol Part Of Reform, Hannah Myers Mar 2014

Long Hours Lasting Consequences: Children As Passive Victims In The Industrial Revolution And A Pivitol Part Of Reform, Hannah Myers

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The British Industrial Revolution has been studied extensively. Leading scholars of the past and present include, but are not limited to, Getrude Himmelfarb, E.P. Thompson, Sonya O. Rose, Mary Poovey, Troy Boone, Friedrich Engles, Oliver Hamlin, Hugh D. Hindman, and George Dodd. Each focused on different aspects of the experience, which range from the economy, to family roles, including definitions of childhood and gender roles, to education, Victorian values, working conditions, and even slavery. The reason for such a diversity of approaches was clearly explained by Joel Mokyr, who argued: . . . [T]he Industrial Revolution illustrates the limitations of …

Community-Level Interventions For Reconciling Conflicting Religious And Sexual Domains In Identity Incongruity, Renato M. Liboro Mar 2014

Community-Level Interventions For Reconciling Conflicting Religious And Sexual Domains In Identity Incongruity, Renato M. Liboro

Psychology Faculty Research

Two of the most unstable domains involved in identity formation, the religious and sexual domains, come into conflict when vulnerable populations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community experience oppression from the indoctrination of religious beliefs that persecute their sexual orientation. This conflict, aptly termed identity incongruity in this article’s discourse, results in a schism that adversely affects these vulnerable populations. This paper investigates the roles of religion, spirituality and available institutional solutions to propose customized, culturally adapted, contextually based and collaborative community-level interventions that would facilitate the reconciliation of the conflicting identity domains.

Embedded Experts On Real Juries: A Delicate Balance, Shari Seidman Diamond, Mary R. Rose, Beth Murphy Mar 2014

Embedded Experts On Real Juries: A Delicate Balance, Shari Seidman Diamond, Mary R. Rose, Beth Murphy

William & Mary Law Review

“Experts” appear in the modern American courtroom on the jury as well as in the witness box, posing a dilemma for the legal system by offering a potentially valuable resource and an uncontrolled source of influence. Courts give ambiguous guidance to jurors on how they should handle their expertise in the deliberation room. On the one hand, jurors are told that they should “decide what the facts are from the evidence presented here in court.” By direct implication, then, jurors should not use outside information to evaluate the evidence. Jurors are also told, however, that they should “consider all of …

Understanding The Global Energy Crisis, Eugene Coyle, Richard A. Simmons Mar 2014

Understanding The Global Energy Crisis, Eugene Coyle, Richard A. Simmons

Books/Book chapters

We are facing a global energy crisis caused by world population growth, an escalating increase in demand, and continued dependence on fossil-based fuels for generation. It is widely accepted that increases in greenhouse gas concentration levels, if not reversed, will result in major changes to world climate with consequential effects on our society and economy. This is just the kind of intractable problem that Purdue University’s Global Policy Research Institute seeks to address in the Purdue Studies in Public Policy series by promoting the engagement between policy makers and experts in fields such as engineering and technology.

Counselors In Rural Schools: A Position Of Leadership, Cynthia L. Wimberly, Stephanie Brickman

The Rural Educator

Approximately one-third of the K-12 student population attends school in areas identified as rural/small town. Rural schools offer counselors unique opportunities to lead by guiding students’ education in directions that best fit their career aspirations, thus impacting the region educationally, economically and socially. The purpose of this paper is to identify the leadership role of school counselors in rural communities as identified by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Numerous challenges and opportunities inherent rural settings have been identified and suggestions offered as to ways in which counselors can effectively undertake leadership roles.

College Choice Factors Of Student-Athletes At Title I High Schools In Miami-Dade County, Florida, Cecilia Armesto Mar 2014

College Choice Factors Of Student-Athletes At Title I High Schools In Miami-Dade County, Florida, Cecilia Armesto

Open Access Dissertations

A very large and important subgroup of student-athletes is ethnic minority in Title I high schools. Understanding the decision-making process of this subgroup is important to the high schools that prepare these students to enter college and to the colleges that recruit them. The college choice factors of 207 student-athletes at three Title I high schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida, were investigated. Independent variables were socioeconomic status (SES), race/ethnicity, graduation year, high school, gender, and grade point average. Dependent variables were eleven choice factors: cost of college, scholarship offer, reputation of college, reputation of coach, distance from home, athletic recruitment, …

Out Of Place: Racial Stereotypes And The Ecology Of Frisks And Searches Following Traffic Stops, Leo Carroll, M. Liliana Gonzalez Mar 2014

Out Of Place: Racial Stereotypes And The Ecology Of Frisks And Searches Following Traffic Stops, Leo Carroll, M. Liliana Gonzalez

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Objectives: Test hypotheses drawn from Smith and Alpert's social conditioning theory that explains biased policing as the result of implicit racial stereotypes. Distinguishing between frisks, external pat-downs, and probable cause searches, we hypothesize that (1) black drivers are more likely than white drivers to be frisked and searched; (2) racial disparity is greater in frisks than searches; (3) racial disparity in frisks, but not searches, is conditional upon the racial composition of the community; and (4) that drivers' race is not related to the productivity of searches. Methods: Data are all traffic stops made by the Rhode Island …

Research Brief: "Unemployment, Earnings, And Enrollment Among Post 9/11 Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study found that Afghanistan/Iraq era veterans have a higher likelihood of unemployment than non-veterans, with female veterans faring worse than their male counterparts. In practice, female veterans of the post-9/11 era suffer from higher absolute levels of unemployment than male veterans, as well as also experiencing a higher unemployment penalty from their service relative to their civilian counterparts than male veterans do. In policy, policymakers may wish to determine ways to increase utilization of GI Bill benefits among disadvantaged populations to increase their long-term employment and earnings. Suggestions for future study include considering the surge of female veterans, and …

Migration Policy And Development In Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Brendan Mullan Mar 2014

Migration Policy And Development In Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Brendan Mullan

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications

Current and prospective migration law and policy in Chile does not adequately incorporate the causes, content, and consequences of international migration to and from Chile. We describe and examine migration in‐flows, out‐flows, migration‐related policies, and how those policies drive, and are driven by, notions of development in Chile. We explore contradictions in Chilean nascent migration policy currently under legislative review. We argue that it is imperative that migration, migration policy, and their relationship to development be discussed inclusively and transparently and be explicitly incorporated into the Chilean government's nascent migration and development legal policies and frameworks.

A Meta-Analysis Of School-Based Depression Prevention Programs For Children And Adolescents, Sherry Lynn Cowen Mar 2014

A Meta-Analysis Of School-Based Depression Prevention Programs For Children And Adolescents, Sherry Lynn Cowen

Theses and Dissertations

School-based depression prevention programs are being implemented in schools across the world in efforts to inoculate children and adolescents from depressive symptoms. This meta-analysis examined 56 manuscripts with a total of 82 studies which focused on school-based programs to determine how they affect depression, anxiety, cognitive skills, self-esteem, coping, and internalizing behaviors. For these specific outcomes, effect sizes ranged from .08 to .25. All combined outcomes yielded a significant effect size of .15. Moderator analyses revealed key differences that identified characteristics of the most effective programs. Targeted programs servicing at-risk students yielded an effect size of .31, while universal programs …

Mixed Methods Approach To Identify Factors And The Extent To Which They Influence Medical/Surgical Prime Vendor Use, Amber J. El-Amin Mar 2014

Mixed Methods Approach To Identify Factors And The Extent To Which They Influence Medical/Surgical Prime Vendor Use, Amber J. El-Amin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis employed a mixed methods approach to address the root causes of less than optimal use of the Medical/Surgical Prime Vendor program. Using techniques from qualitative research, interviews were conducted with subject matter experts to better understand the phenomena. A grounded theory approach was applied and content analysis performed to identify recurring themes within the transcript data. These data were used to select five constructs that appear to influence Medical/Surgical Prime Vendor contract use. Through the theoretical lenses of the Strategy, Structure, and Performance model as well as the Technology Acceptance Model, a theoretical model was developed. To measure …

Searching For Security: India’S Role In The Post-War Federal Democratic Republic Of Nepal, Liam D. Anderson

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This article aims to analyse New Delhi’s role in post-war Nepal, understood as part of its search for security in its periphery. India has been deeply involved in Nepali affairs since Independence, holding an influential position which has often engendered resentment, but which was nevertheless important in negotiating an end to the Maoists’ People’s War in 2006. Since engaging the Maoists, with whom New Delhi had a historically hostile relationship, India has appeared inclined to be seen as a supportive larger neighbour rather than an imposing regional hegemon. This, as an attempt to improve regional relations, can still be understood …

Putting A Human Face On The Minimum Wage, Christopher R. Fee Mar 2014

Putting A Human Face On The Minimum Wage, Christopher R. Fee

English Faculty Publications

What is a “livable wage,” and should we strive to raise wages for American workers?

There are lots of conflicting studies and reports. The Congressional Budget Office projects that an increase in the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour would eliminate 500,000 jobs while raising the incomes of nearly 17 million Americans.

Even prominent economists like David Card and David Neumark diametrically disagree on the likely consequences of raising the minimum wage, and their studies of results in New Jersey have consistently yielded conflicting results for decades. [excerpt]
