A perspective that has often been absent in criminal justice research is that of former prisoners. This article discusses the establishment, in 1997, of “convict criminology,” a group of scholars producing research informed by their experiences of crime and the criminal justice process; that is, either those who have served time themselves or who have operated alongside prisoners as professionals in custodial settings. It is argued that such scholars face similar dilemmas to others in terms of emotionalism, but suggests that their emotions are of a different nature. While an “insider” perspective cannot lay claim to scientific “objectivity,” the article …
"It Was He Who Gave Some To Be": Toward An Understanding Of The Role Of The Female Prophet In The Lutheran Church, Ann Murphy
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Murphy, Ann I. "'It Was He Who Gave Some To Be': Toward an Understanding of the Role of the Female Prophet in the Lutheran Church." STM thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2014,131 pp.
This thesis addresses some of the ambiguities and inadequacies in Lutheran theological reflection regarding the prophetic office and attempts to integrate theological constructions pertaining to revelatory spiritual gifts, inspiration, the Ministry, and women's roles in the church so that they more consistently inform one another.

Social network analysis has recently gained a lot of interest because of the advent and the increasing popularity of social media, such as blogs, social networking applications, microblogging, or customer review sites. In this environment, trust is becoming an essential quality among user interactions and the recommendation for useful content and trustful users is crucial for all the members of the network. In this paper, we introduce a framework for handling trust in social networks, which is based on a reputation mechanism that captures the implicit and explicit connections between the network members, analyzes the semantics and dynamics of these …
Dating Violence On The College Campus: Exploring Student Perception And Awareness, Patrice Gibson
Dating Violence On The College Campus: Exploring Student Perception And Awareness, Patrice Gibson
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Dating violence is a crime that plagues college students all over the world. Many students are unaware of what specifically constitutes dating violence and what resources are available to those who are affected by this crime. Colleges and universities tend to have vague or nonexistent rules and regulations regarding dating violence; there is also a lack of education provided to first-year students about dating violence and resources available to them. The present study explored student perception of dating violence and focused on students from small, liberal arts colleges in the central and southwest part of Virginia. Furthermore, this study built …

Big Data And Management: From The Editors, Gerard George, Martine R. Haas, Alex Pentland
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Big data is everywhere. In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on big data, business analytics, and "smart" living and work environments. Though these conversations are predominantly practice driven, organizations are exploring how large-volume data can usefully be deployed to create and capture value for individuals, businesses, communities, and governments (McKinsey Global Institute, 2011). Whether it is machine learning and web analytics to predict individual action, consumer choice, search behavior, traffic patterns, or disease outbreaks, big data is fast becoming a tool that not only analyzes patterns, but can also provide the predictive likelihood of an event.
Data Mining The Liberal Arts, Jerry Scripps
Data Mining The Liberal Arts, Jerry Scripps
2014 Conference Presentations
Data mining is one of the tool sets that has been enlisted to help make sense of the massive amount of data that has been collecting over the past few years. Most people associate its use with targeted marketing and government oversight. However, they can also provide scholars in the liberal arts with powerful tools to discover new insights and questions. In this talk, I will discuss some ways in which researchers have recently used data mining to uncover new knowledge in some diverse areas.
Arts Outreach In The Middle East, Matthias Clark
Arts Outreach In The Middle East, Matthias Clark
Masters Theses
After centuries of debate and discussion regarding the value and appropriateness of arts in the Middle East, specifically music, many indigenous people have recently pursued active roles in championing indigenous and international arts toward social reform, identity formation, and spiritual development. This shift in use and function of the arts has been reflected in some groundbreaking attempts of using arts in contextualized forms that have impacted spiritual communities. This study is designed to compare two specific case studies that exemplify these shifts: the "School of Worship and Music" and the "Creative Center". These organizations will be analyzed and compared in …

An Evaluation Model For Non-Governmental Organizations Engaged In Advocacy, Nathalie Des Rosiers
An Evaluation Model For Non-Governmental Organizations Engaged In Advocacy, Nathalie Des Rosiers
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The article proposes a model to evaluate the effectiveness of NGOs that engage in advocacy for compliance with international human rights and civil liberties standards or constitutional rules. The model draws on the analysis of social movement effectiveness, ombudsmen’s roles and the literature on the evaluation of human rights NGOs at the international level. It establishes ways to measure the legitimacy and effectiveness of advocacy NGOs. In particular, it suggests that transparency and independence must be constantly demonstrated, that factual accuracy must always be sought and that legal compliance must be shown to have moral and public interest resonance. The …

Accessing Justice Amid Threats Of Contagion, Janet E. Mosher
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Plans to prepare for a global pandemic have proliferated in recent years, and “legal preparedness” has emerged as a critical component of such plans. Commonly, the threat of disease is analogized to terrorism and recast as an issue of national security. In this framing, laws authorizing surveillance, containment, and forced treatment are understood as necessary. Law’s promise of protection against abuses in the exercise of such powers through procedural rights of review offers meagre comfort for critics concerned that individual liberties will readily yield to national security and public health in the context of an actual pandemic. An alternative framing …
An Exploratory Study Of Undergraduates’ Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action Policies For Asian Americans In College, Nicholas D. Hartlep, Robert Jay Lowinger
An Exploratory Study Of Undergraduates’ Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action Policies For Asian Americans In College, Nicholas D. Hartlep, Robert Jay Lowinger
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This exploratory study examined white undergraduate students’ (a) racial attitudes towards Asian Americans, (b) principled policy attitudes toward affirmative action, and (c) self-interest in relation to their support for college-based affirmative action policies for Asian Americans at a Midwestern university. A sample (n = 264, 28% male, 72% female) of white undergraduate students from a midsized public university in the Midwest was surveyed. The findings indicate that white undergraduate women have significantly more favorable principled policy attitudes toward affirmative action in general and for an affirmative action college policy for Asians, in particular, than do undergraduate males. Implications for issues …

Singapore celebrates its 50th year of independence next year, but what it means to beSingaporean continues to be a topic of discussion and debate.Of late, there have been passionate reactions to criticism of Singapore from those in ourmidst, Singaporeans and foreigners alike. To counter British writer Charlotte Ashton’slabelling of Singapore as suffering from a “massive compassion deficit”, bloggers andletter writers to the media cited examples of people giving up their seats to those in needon the MRT or going the extra mile to help strangers.

Social Distance In The United States: Sex, Race, Religion, Age, And Education Homophily Among Confidants, 1985 To 2004, Jeffrey A. Smith, Miller Mcpherson, Lynn Smith-Lovin
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Homophily, the tendency for similar actors to be connected at a higher rate than dissimilar actors, is a pervasive social fact. In this article, we examine changes over a 20-year period in two types of homophily—the actual level of contact between people in different social categories and the level of contact relative to chance. We use data from the 1985 and 2004 General Social Surveys to ask whether the strengths of five social distinctions—sex, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, age, and education—changed over the past two decades in core discussion networks. Changes in the actual level of homophily are driven by the …

Diversionary Foreign Policy In Authoritarian States: The Use Of Multiple Diversionary Strategies By Saddam Hussein During The Gulf War, Kilic B. Kanat
Diversionary Foreign Policy In Authoritarian States: The Use Of Multiple Diversionary Strategies By Saddam Hussein During The Gulf War, Kilic B. Kanat
Journal of Strategic Security
The diversionary theory of war has been considered one of the most contested theories that link domestic and external conflicts. Thus far scholarship in this field has focused on one-time single diversionary attacks, which led to the temporary deflection of attention from domestic problems to external ones. This study intends to bring revisions to the assumptions in the center of diversionary theory and demonstrate these through a well-known but underutilized case. This article intends to show that leaders have not one single option but rather a repertoire of different foreign policy actions in their possession to divert the attention of …
Homegrown Muslim Extremism In The Netherlands: An Exploratory Note, Maria M. Komen
Homegrown Muslim Extremism In The Netherlands: An Exploratory Note, Maria M. Komen
Journal of Strategic Security
In his Widening Circles of Disidentification the Dutch sociologist Abram de Swaan argues that enmity and violent conflicts occur most frequently among groups that resemble one another, in transitional phases in which the social differences between these groups are growing smaller. This paper sets out to explore this thesis, in relation to the recent tensions in the Netherlands generated by a trend towards radicalization among second-generation Moroccan youth. Another relevant point that is discussed is the way some ethnic minority juveniles are socialised and integrated in Dutch society. Political radicalism among young Moroccans in the Netherlands seems to be promoted …

Students' Perceptions Of Interaction In A Hybrid Foreign Language (L2) Arabic Course In Light Of Their Affective Domain, Hanan Elsayed Ahmed Eltayeb Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract Hybrid courses were developed to maintain the advantages associated with distance learning, while solving the problem of learner-instructor interaction. This would indicate that successful learner-instructor interaction is one of the core features of this type of class which enables it to best serve the learner. To verify the above, a descriptive, qualitative case study was designed to investigate students' perceptions of interaction (student-instructor and student-student) in a hybrid foreign language Arabic course, taking into account their affective domain. The structure of the hybrid course which was investigated consisted of a videoconferencing session conducted by the main teacher, followed by …
The Effects Of Background Factors On Afqt Score, Jaret Kanarek
The Effects Of Background Factors On Afqt Score, Jaret Kanarek
Honors Projects
The introduction of the National Longitudinal Survey of the Youth (NLSY) 1979 and 1997 cohorts made Armed Forces Qualifications Test (AFQT) score data widely available and has thus dramatically increased its use in academic research. However, there is strong evidence that a wide variety of background factors, such as poverty status, race, and parent’s education level, affect AFQT score. Human capital theory, in conjunction with the pathways framework, suggests that these background factors have both direct and indirect effects on AFQT score. The focus of this research is measuring some of the important direct and indirect pathways through which background …

Other People's Volatility: A Call For Rules That More Equitably Stabilize The Stock Market, J. Scott Colesanti
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The first stock exchanges involved government. The modern stock exchange is strangely devoid of government presence, at least in terms of the decision to halt trading. Meanwhile, over two-hundred billion dollars trades each day on the New York Stock Exchange, one of thirteen recognized domestic exchanges. A more precise calculation of daily volume needs to include dozens more “alternative trading systems,” even less regulated market centers that have grown in size and capital. Overall, the securities market forges forward each weekday without halt unless outdated or severely technical “breakers” are imposed by the stock exchanges themselves. The federal government – …

Evaluating Adolescent Satisfaction Of A 4-H Leadership Development Conference, Steven M. Worker
Evaluating Adolescent Satisfaction Of A 4-H Leadership Development Conference, Steven M. Worker
Journal of Extension
Youth leadership development is strengthened by activities that promote a sense of belonging, development of competence, and increased agency. The study reported here used 7 years of evaluation data from the California 4-H State Leadership Conference to analyze the relationship among satisfaction and sense of belonging, feeling respected, and perceived competence. Results revealed that perceived competence and feeling respected were always significant and belonging was significant in two years. An ANCOVA demonstrated that youth participants who felt respected by youth in leadership roles predicted satisfaction more often than feeling respected by adults or peer participants.

Cooperative Extension And Climate Change: Successful Program Delivery, Hilary Lc Morris, Mark A. Megalos, Aaron J. Vuola, Damian C. Adams, Martha Monroe
Journal of Extension
The politically charged debate surrounding climate change poses a challenge to outreach and education. A 2011 survey revealed that NC Extension professionals have approached climate change programming cautiously, citing lack of audience interest as the primary barrier—perhaps because the Southeast region has experienced relatively mild climate change impacts, to date. We propose a tiered approach to effectively communicate climate change adaptation strategies to agriculture and natural resource Extension clients: Extension should provide climate science information to early adopters and emphasize risk management of specific threats to clients not convinced about climate change, focusing on local solutions and familiar management tools.
Factors That Predict Time To In-Field Employment Of Associate Degree Graduates: A Study Of One College In The Technical College System Of Georgia, Karon Futch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This regression study examined the set of graduate characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity), as well as Grade Point Average Motivation, and environmental factors (program of study, use of career services, internship completion, Grade Point Average) that predicted time to in-field employment among associate degree graduates. Graduates ranging from 2010-2012 in business, computers, healthcare, industrial, or service programs at one technical college in the Technical College System of Georgia were surveyed regarding employment status following graduation. Demographic data, as well as environmental data, were collected from the Technical College System of Georgia's Knowledge Management System in order to establish a relationship among …
The Correlation Of Social, Financial, And Academic Supports To Military Benefit Recipients' Persistence In College, Bruce Mentzer
The Correlation Of Social, Financial, And Academic Supports To Military Benefit Recipients' Persistence In College, Bruce Mentzer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study sought to determine the strength and nature of the relationships between social, academic, and financial support and the intent of military students to persist in higher education at a large private non-profit university. The study also collected data from nonmilitary students to note contrasting relationships and looked at overall results for the two groups combined. Multivariate stepwise models confirmed the emphasis on academic support for persistence towards degree completion with all groups. Financial aid effects varied by military, nonmilitary, and for the overall population; military students were negatively impacted by loans, nonmilitary by university scholarships, and the overall …
