Challenges & Strategies For Conducting Qualitative Research With Persons Diagnosed With Rare Movement Disorders, Kori A. Ladonna, Michael J. Ravenek
Challenges & Strategies For Conducting Qualitative Research With Persons Diagnosed With Rare Movement Disorders, Kori A. Ladonna, Michael J. Ravenek
The Qualitative Report
Unique features of Huntington’s disease and young-onset Parkinson’s disease, both neurodegenerative movement disorders, can pose challenges for conducting qualitative research. From the perspectives of two doctoral candidates conducting research with these groups, a number of challenges are presented and discussed alongside strategies for managing such challenges. Challenges are organized according to physical (e.g., movement), psychological (e.g., cognition) and social (e.g., speech impairment) aspects of these diseases. The strategies presented emphasize the importance of ethical reasoning in situations that can arise, as well as the relationships developed with the research participants. Author transparency and ethical reasoning are both important in conducting …
Edward Bliss Emerson, The Medical Tourist, Wilfredo A. Géigel
Edward Bliss Emerson, The Medical Tourist, Wilfredo A. Géigel
The Qualitative Report
Traveling for health reasons was not an unusual event for wealthy and wellto-do members of society both in North America and Europe in the early 19th century. Edward Bliss Emerson is an example of those who traveled for health reasons. Books and newspapers at that time, like today, incited the infirm to travel to far-away places where the climate and the surroundings would take care of their ills. This essay will look at medical tourism, especially in the Caribbean, as seen through the eyes of Edward Emerson.

Encountering The Viper: Edward Bliss Emerson And Slavery, Annette B. Ramírez De Arellano
The Qualitative Report
The journal of Edward Bliss Emerson often mentions topics that piqued his curiosity because they were unusual or puzzling. Few subjects were as foreign to him as slavery. Writing in 1831-32, Emerson provides us a series of aural and visual vignettes rather than a coherent commentary on slavery as a way of life. Focusing on the everyday aspects of the institution instead of the politics and economics behind it, Emerson nevertheless suggests the different lenses through which slavery was viewed by a New England intellectual and others.
Beyond Cutting: Restorying Self-Injury, Brittany E. Presson
Beyond Cutting: Restorying Self-Injury, Brittany E. Presson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Using autoethnographic accounts from the author and the literature as a starting point, this researcher conducted in-depth life history interviews with former self-injurers. This research problematizes current perceptions of self-injury by looking beyond the typical pro/con debates and pathologizing discourses used to define and interpret self-injury. My specific research question is, "In what ways, if any, does self-injury serve as a narrative resource when self-injurers tell the story of their life?" Study participants engaged in biographical work that both affirmed and resisted the pathologizing discourses used by both researchers and mainstream society regarding their identity.

Difficult Spaces: The Gothic-Blues Voice In Comparative African American Literary Movements, Cheng-Hsuan Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In the African American literary heritage, a counter-discourse as opposed to the dominant culture's racial ideology is often needed to not only adopt the "master's text" but also redress it to accommodate the black American's experience and expression. The intention of this dissertation is to theorize the expressive modes of the gothic and the blues as one potent counter-discourse informing the voice of black resistance in African American literature against the exploitation of the master narrative from the mainstream. My project focuses on the potential inter-textuality of the blues/gothic voice in the literary conventions of the migration narrative, black drama, …
Hitler And Wagnerism, Janet Gregory
Hitler And Wagnerism, Janet Gregory
Manuscripts
To the average person the name Wagner means nothing more than the name .of a German composer and writer of operas. However, that name means to the German people almost as much as the name of Hitler. Wagner's music is so impressive that it has lived through the past century and has come to be one of the most outstanding influences on modern Europe. It has been said that whoever expects to understand National Socialist Germany must know Wagner. Adolph Hitler has often told his friends and the whole National Socialist regime, which finds its foundation in the Germanic myths, …

A Historical Analysis Of Career Choice Among Chinese College Students, Fengyu Wang, Cody Ding
A Historical Analysis Of Career Choice Among Chinese College Students, Fengyu Wang, Cody Ding
Education Sciences and Professional Programs Faculty Works
This study provides a historical analysis and review of the contemporary development of career choice orientations among Chinese college students in light of recent economic reform policies. Specifically, it describes the changes in, and developing trends of, career choice orientations in the past, present, and future among college students. This analysis reveals that with the profound transition from a centralized planned economy to a market economy in recent China, students’ career orientation has experienced a transformation from a societal standard to an individualistic standard; personal goals have changed from idealism to realism; and ideologies have developed from a unilateral structure …

The Vital Role Of Ideas In Industrial Policy Changes In Ireland During The 1980s, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke
The Vital Role Of Ideas In Industrial Policy Changes In Ireland During The 1980s, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke
Conference papers
Employing a discursive institutionalist approach in the form of the critical juncture theory (CJT), this paper examines the nature of the changes to Irish industrial policy in the mid 1980s, a time when the country went through one of its worst economic crises. Did these policy changes, ushered in by the Telesis Report of 1982, constitute a transformation in industrial policy, or a continuation of a previously established policy pathway, and if so why? To answer this question the paper explores the roles played by various change agents, and their ideas, in altering the industrial policy that had been established …

Schoenberg's Expressionist Cult Of The Forest, Moon, And Mind, Michael Palmese
Open Access Theses
Delineating what exactly constitutes expressionism in music remains a perpetually confounding area of musicological scholarship, susceptible to prosaic definitions that do little to illuminate anything beyond conspicuous surface elements. There is a clear necessity for developing a method that allows scholars to come to terms with the movement in its own right. The primary goal of this thesis is to lay such a foundation by accounting for expressionism as practiced by the movement’s alleged figurehead—Arnold Schoenberg. In this thesis, I will examine three of the works that are most often described as “expressionist”: Erwartung, Pierrot lunaire, and Die glückliche Hand. …

The Consequence Of Freedom: A Sociological Analysis Of The Suicide Epidemic In Luthuania, Kyle Kaminski
The Consequence Of Freedom: A Sociological Analysis Of The Suicide Epidemic In Luthuania, Kyle Kaminski
Honors Theses
Lithuania has the highest global suicide rate at 40.2/100,000, according to the international suicide statistics provided by WHO (2004). Lithuania's suicide rate is over 2.5 times more than the global average. The top five countries in terms of suicide rate are Lithuania, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Hungary (Ibid). All of these countries were previously under the Soviet Union's control from the end of World War II to the end of the Cold War in 1989. Lithuania has not always been at the top of the rankings for global suicide rates. Lithuania's suicide rate spiked almost 20 percent during the years …
Sleepy Meets Grumpy: Daily Sleep Predicting Marital Interactions Through Mood, Wesley Godfrey, Jeremy Yorganson
Sleepy Meets Grumpy: Daily Sleep Predicting Marital Interactions Through Mood, Wesley Godfrey, Jeremy Yorganson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As populations worldwide grow increasingly older, the need to understand associations between daily health behaviors and relational outcomes among the aging population is of great importance. Further, exploring these associations among individuals in a relationship as common, yet as influential, as the marriage relationship is especially imperative to consider. Current literature has identified sleep as an important correlate to marital quality (Strawbridge, Shema, & Roberts, 2004). However, less is understood concerning the mechanisms that may account for this link, especially among the older population. Furthermore, though studies have identified important relationships between sleep and mood (Neckelmann, Mykletun, & Dahl, 2007), …
The Fluidity Of Human Intimacy: A Look At Relationship Orientation And Identity With A Focus On Polyamory, Briana Spangler
The Fluidity Of Human Intimacy: A Look At Relationship Orientation And Identity With A Focus On Polyamory, Briana Spangler
UROP Posters
Polyamory (or “Poly”) is an alternative way that people conduct their relationships. My research was aimed at discovering what role relationship structure has to an individual’s identity. In this presentation, identity is defined as characteristics, beliefs and behaviors that make up a person’s self-image. To answer this question, I conducted a small case study involving personal interviews to find out how personal relationship structure played a role to their individual identities, particularly in the case of Polyamorous relationships. According to my findings, it seems that relationship structure has its own orientation, separate from sexual or gender orientation. The importance of …

Keirestsu Centrality - Profits And Profit Stability: A Power Dependence Perspective, Lance Eilot Brouthers, Yan Gao, Stuart Napshin
Faculty Articles
Prior studies compare keiretsu member firm and independent firm performance. Here, we use historical and power dependence perspectives to theorize that the Japanese keiretsu system primarily benefits the most central firms. We test this by examining the performance of two types of keiretsu firms (central firms and other member firms) within two types of keiretsu (horizontal and vertical). We hypothesize and find that: (1) central vertical keiretsu firms are more profitable than central horizontal keiretsu firms; (2) central horizontal keiretsu firms have greater profit stability than central vertical keiretsu firms; (3) central vertical keiretsu firms are more profitable than non-central …
How Diagnostic Terms May Catalyze Or Extend The Duration Of Anorexia Nervosa, Leslie Pyo
How Diagnostic Terms May Catalyze Or Extend The Duration Of Anorexia Nervosa, Leslie Pyo
UROP Posters
Anorexia nervosa (AN) predominantly affects adolescent females and has the highest rate of mortality among psychiatric disorders. It is categorized as an Axis 1 Clinical Disorder in the DSM-IV and a Mental/Behavioural Disorder in the ICD-9. No research, however, has been conducted on how the diagnostic terms and linguistic categorization of AN may psychologically and neurobiologically contribute to the etiology or duration of AN. Peer-reviewed scientific articles, case studies, and books were used to investigate this relationship. Medical terminology loses its original context when used in non-medical society, gaining the power a label that may catalyze the development of AN …
Why Should I Get Married: Implications Of Class And Gender Differences On Health Outcomes For Cohabitating And Married Black Couples, Korrie Dchonn Johnson
Why Should I Get Married: Implications Of Class And Gender Differences On Health Outcomes For Cohabitating And Married Black Couples, Korrie Dchonn Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Health problems that disproportionately affect blacks could be regarded as a result of African American's tendency towards non-normative family patterns. Cohabitation has become a popular non-normative family formation within the United States as well as with blacks. This has led many to study the role of cohabitation on health. Scholars have compiled a long list of negative consequences of such practices, while generating another list of positive outcomes of marriage, but these studies of cohabitation might be capturing the consequences of resources and income disparities rather than cohabitation in itself. Existing studies of cohabitation, as well as marriage, neglect the …
Gendered Role Performances In Patriarchal Nrms: An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Twelve Tribes, Amelia Blume
Gendered Role Performances In Patriarchal Nrms: An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Twelve Tribes, Amelia Blume
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Research on New Religious Movements (NRMs) has generally examined gender within two contexts: conversion into the movement and gender role variation across groups. Similarly, a robust body of literature has studied the ways women navigate traditional gender roles across a wide swath of settings from formal organizations (Hochschild 1979, 1983) to abusive relationships (Summers-Effler 2004), but the NRMs literature has largely disregarded this micro-level dynamic. This research draws on ethnographic data, including participant observation and in-depth interviews, to examine gendered role performances and impression and emotion management in one communal NRM, the Twelve Tribes, in order to examine the daily …

Markers Of Performance: Emotion Marking And Sacral Bonds In White Supremacist Discourse, Marshall A. Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Using lyric data from white supremacist musicians, I build upon theories of social marking to develop emotion marking: i.e., the practice of using emotional labels to discursively differentiate social actors. Projections of shame and claims to pride are analyzed here as markers used within white supremacist discourse to differentiate movement loyalists from opposed others in relation to the state of their relative sacral bonds--that is, moral commitments to their perceived sacred social order. Borrowing from social bond theory, it is posited here that when sacral bonds are perceived to be threatened, shame is made manifest; when bonds are maintained, pride …
