Identified By Taste: The Chef As Artist?, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Apr 2014

Identified By Taste: The Chef As Artist?, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

This article discusses the role of taste among the senses using fictional depictions of taste, including Proust’s madeleine episode; Suskind’s Perfume: the story of a murderer; Esquivel’s Como aqua para chocolate; Harris’s Chocolate and Blixen’s Babette’s feast. The discussion also provides three historical case studies which highlight how an individual chef was identified against the odds by the individualistic taste of his or her cooking.

Deconstructing The Digital Divide: Critical Media Literacy Implementation In The Classroom, Evelyn C. Obamos Apr 2014

Deconstructing The Digital Divide: Critical Media Literacy Implementation In The Classroom, Evelyn C. Obamos

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

In this presentation I explore the complexity of the digital divide and propose to use the framework of critical praxis put forth by Paolo Freire in the Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970). Using Freire we are able to build on existing research on the digital divide, contextualize the multi-dimensional issue of the divide, and respond to the social, cultural, and political issues within and beyond the classroom environment.

Creating Spatially-Explicit Lawn Maps Without Classifying Remotely-Sensed Imagery: The Case Of Suburban Boston, Massachusetts, Usa, Nicholas M. Giner, Colin Polsky, Robert G. Pontius Jr., Daniel M. Runfola, Samuel J. Ratick Apr 2014

Creating Spatially-Explicit Lawn Maps Without Classifying Remotely-Sensed Imagery: The Case Of Suburban Boston, Massachusetts, Usa, Nicholas M. Giner, Colin Polsky, Robert G. Pontius Jr., Daniel M. Runfola, Samuel J. Ratick

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Residential lawns are a dominant and growing feature of US residential landscapes, and the resource-intensive management of this landscape feature presents major potential risks to both humans and the environment. In recent years, scientists and policymakers have been increasingly calling for large-extent measures of lawns and other similar landscape features. Unfortunately, the production of such datasets using traditional, remotely sensed measurement approaches can be prohibitively expensive and time consuming. This study uses two statistical prediction methods to extrapolate the quantity and spatial distribution of residential lawns from a sample of mapped lawns in a large study area in suburban Boston, …

Functional Harmony: The Social Culture Of A High School Orchestra, Lindsay Moraczewski

Open Access Theses

The purpose of this case study was to examine the sociomusical dimensions of high school orchestra culture. There were three main areas that were investigated: the sociomusical nature of the orchestra, social stratification within the orchestra, and alignment of perceptions between the director and students. Of particular interest were participants’ perceptions of the school orchestra, what it means for them socially to be part of the orchestra, and the nature of social groups within the orchestra. The seven student participants were all of junior or senior class standing and ranged in age from 16 to 18 years old. The director …

The Ongoing Challenge Of Renewal In Contemporary Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders Apr 2014

The Ongoing Challenge Of Renewal In Contemporary Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

It is just 50 years since the close of Vatican II when we stood on the pristine peaks of a new beginning, surveying the broad vistas of possibility for genuine renewal in Religious Life and in the Church as a whole. In the next ten years the little dark cloud that appeared on the horizon with the death of Good Pope John became the thick black clouds of the “restoration.” The gathering darkness of the “reform of the reform” in which we found ourselves was further deepened by the explosion of the abuse scandals and the huge exodus of Religious, …

Exploring The Neighborhood Preferences Of A Segment Of Millennials In Omaha, Nebraska, Aaron Kloke Apr 2014

Exploring The Neighborhood Preferences Of A Segment Of Millennials In Omaha, Nebraska, Aaron Kloke

Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects

In 2010, Millennials, or those between 18 and 34, surpassed the Baby Boomers in population size. Today, Millennials, also known as Generation Y, make up over 25 percent of the United States’ population. In Omaha, they make up 26.9 percent of the population. The next largest generation in Omaha, the Baby Boomers, make for 19.2 percent of the population. Clearly, this emerging demographic has the ability to change the way we create and design our built environment if it so chooses.

To review how this generation may choose to change the way we design our future neighborhoods, national trends were …

Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’S Photography Of A Forgotten New York, Irina Nersessova Apr 2014

Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’S Photography Of A Forgotten New York, Irina Nersessova

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article addresses the impact urban space has on individuals through the use of Situationist International theory and psychogeography. Representations of homelessness in New York in Margaret Morton's photography are used to demonstrate the interconnectedness among space, people, and social issues. Social issues manifest themselves in urban decay, and the inhabitants react to this phenomenon emotionally and artistically. Some inhabitants demonstrate their relationship with space by responding with material production of housing and art, which they accomplish by building without exploiting the environment the way the manufacturing of commodities often does.

Does Parental Divorce Have An Affect On A Child's Education?, Brittany Odenweller Apr 2014

Does Parental Divorce Have An Affect On A Child's Education?, Brittany Odenweller

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In the U.S., 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. Children who experience their parents going through a divorce are often left susceptible to depression, acting out, and suffering problems academically. This study examines the relationship between academic problems and parent relationships and divorce. When parents decide to divorce or separate, their actions can affect their children’s education and schooling. The twenty former Abington High School and now Bridgewater State University students were each interviewed one-on-one to find out if their parents’ relationships and conflicts had any effect on their academics. Between the ten students who came from divorced parents, …

Trisdale W*, Mazerolle SM*, Goodman A†, Eason CM*: *University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT; †Appalachian State University, Boone, NC

Context: Athletic Trainers (ATs) not only have to manage their responsibilities in the workplace, but also those associated with their personal and family lives. This is referred to as work-life balance (WLB). Long work hours, inflexible work schedules, travel, and coaches’ expectations have all been found to be major contributors of work-life imbalance especially at the NCAA Division I clinical setting where performance expectations are high. Organizational factors …

Self-Reported Experiences Of Dating Abuses Among College Students In Romantic Relationships, Melissa A. Kinsella Apr 2014

Self-Reported Experiences Of Dating Abuses Among College Students In Romantic Relationships, Melissa A. Kinsella

Honors Projects

Past researchers have examined the prevalence of dating violence among college-aged students in the United States. Using a self-reported survey of the experiences of current college students, this study analyzed some of the factors related to physical, emotional, and sexual abuses in their romantic relationships. From that analysis, comparisons were drawn with the research from other college-university samples, attempting to describe and explore the problem of violence in premarital relationships. In the sample, race, number of past serious romantic relationships, and frequency of experienced anger was associated with minor physical abuse. Non-involvement in Greek Life was associated with experiencing major …

Freedom, Solidarity, Revolution: Marx And The Ethical, James Justin Sledge Apr 2014

Freedom, Solidarity, Revolution: Marx And The Ethical, James Justin Sledge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Renewed interest in radical politics has emerged in the wake of the recent economic crisis, the Arab Spring, the Occupy! movement, and the struggle against economic austerity. This is not exactly a boon for Marxist revolutionaries, however. Major gaps remain in the philosophical underpinnings for any Marxist political program. This project investigates one of those gaps: the relationship of Marxism to the ethical. To illustrate this, I turn to the early thinking of the Marxist philosopher György Lukács. In two 1919 essays, Lukács first rejected the view that socialist values can be suspended to accomplish socialist ends only to then …

Rethink!Ng Metabolism: Regenerative Architecture As An Urban Solution, Matt V. Sihvonen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis will develop an architectural methodology that provides an alternative to the wasteful and restrictive approaches often used in urban development fueled predominantly by pecuniary considerations. Inspiration will be drawn from one of the last major architectural movements, Metabolism, to elicit the ideals that made “Japanese Postmodernism” unique. A specific criticism will be directed at one of the movement’s centerpieces, the Nakagin Capsule Tower, to uncover the reasons for its demise and to capture the essential values that drove the project’s design. This research will provide a strong foothold as this thesis tests the present-day validity of adaptive architecture …

Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission: An Analysis Of Sentence Fairness And Prison Population, Andrew J. Morley Apr 2014

Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission: An Analysis Of Sentence Fairness And Prison Population, Andrew J. Morley

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

This article and accompanying poster observe the success of the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission by viewing the consistency of prison sentences and rate of prison population growth after implementation. I hypothesize that the sentecing guidelines allow for fairer sentences and manageable prison capacities. Prior research has shown the success of the determinate sentencing system. The research begins in 1979 with the Commission's conception. The results of research demonstrates that the Guidelines do in fact achieve consistency in sentencing and manageability in prison capacities.

Cities And Sustainability: Polycentric Action And Multilevel Governance, George C. Homsy, Mildred E. Warner Apr 2014

Cities And Sustainability: Polycentric Action And Multilevel Governance, George C. Homsy, Mildred E. Warner

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

Polycentric theory, as applied to sustainability policy adoption, contends that municipalities will act independently to provide public services that protect the environment. Our multilevel regression analysis of survey responses from 1,497 municipalities across the United States challenges that notion. We find that internal drivers of municipal action are insufficient. Lower policy adoption is explained by capacity constraints. More policymaking occurs in states with a multilevel governance framework supportive of local sustainability action. Contrary to Fischel’s homevoter hypothesis, we find large cities and rural areas show higher levels of adoption than suburbs (possibly due to free riding within a metropolitan region).

Roosevelt, Boy Scouts, And The Formation Of Muscular Christian Character, Gordon J. Christen Apr 2014

Roosevelt, Boy Scouts, And The Formation Of Muscular Christian Character, Gordon J. Christen

Religious Studies Honors Projects

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, many prominent Christians and political leaders saw a degenerative influence in industrializing America. For them, urban culture had eroded gender roles, personal strength, and moral fiber. So-called “Muscular Christians” prescribed physical exertion and wilderness experience to cure these ills. I argue that these values were embodied in idealized characters such as Theodore Roosevelt, Jesus, and the Boy Scout to give a form to cultural remedies. In the process, they became the terms upon which proper Americanism, and proper Christianity, were constructed.
