Youth Culture And Islam In Indonesia, Pam Nilan, Michelle Mansfield Apr 2014

Youth Culture And Islam In Indonesia, Pam Nilan, Michelle Mansfield

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Indonesian youth culture is sometimes depicted through a moral panic discourse about mixed sex socializing. In this article, the authors challenge that view by presenting some ethnographic material on young Muslim Indonesians of both sexes socialising in an internet caf and gathering during Ramadhan in a mall in Solo, Central Java. Young Indonesians enact everyday youth culture through the negotiation of space, time, and technology within the strong discourse of moral propriety and gender separation advised by contemporary Islam. The intense social bonding between same sex age peers provides security and reassurance for young men and women in the transition …

An Assessment Of Ho Chi Minh’S Strategies For Gaining Support In The Vietnamese Revolution, Madeline Fraser Apr 2014

An Assessment Of Ho Chi Minh’S Strategies For Gaining Support In The Vietnamese Revolution, Madeline Fraser

Young Historians Conference

Despite Americans’ awareness of Vietnam in the context of America’s crusade against communism, little attention is paid to Ho Chi Minh as a national revolutionary in the creation of an independent Vietnam. This paper addresses Ho Chi Minh’s tactics for inciting a revolutionary spirit in the Vietnamese people, particularly his blending of communism and nationalism. Although Ho was characterized as a fervent communist in the West, an examination of his strategies reveals a man who recognized the need to diversify his platform. Ho not only employed nationalistic propaganda, but also adopted fragments of varying political ideologies and appealed to the …

Fair Trial In A Sensationalist Society: Charles Manson And The Tate-Labianca Trial, Jamie L. Cannady

Young Historians Conference

The American legal system was created to ensure each citizen a fair and impartial administration of justice. Charles Manson, notorious criminal and leader of the Manson Family, faced one of the most sensationalistic and dramatized trials in all of United States history. This study views Manson's trial under these promised civil liberties, scrutinizing how Manson and his followers were not given the right to fair trial as secured under the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Through many contemptuous actions by the court and media, the accused Family members were sentenced to death without an unbiased and lawful verdict.

Honor And Destruction: The Conflicted Object In Moral Rights Law, Sonya G. Bonneau Apr 2014

Honor And Destruction: The Conflicted Object In Moral Rights Law, Sonya G. Bonneau

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Part I offers an overview of traditional moral rights theory, particularly the right of integrity, and outlines relevant strains of law and culture that preceded the enactment of VARA. Part II discusses how VARA functions as a statute that mediates artists’ rights through the physical object, and how the deliberate synthesis of preservation theory with orthodox moral rights philosophy hamstrings both ends. Part III identifies cultural assumptions embedded in three prominent attributes of the art object conceptualized as protected under VARA—material, cultural, and transcendent—and discusses their conflicting impulses in the law. Finally, Part IV concludes that the “object model,” …

Part I presents the problem through an analysis of the opinion of the Court, Justice Scalia’s concurrence, and Justice Ginsburg’s dissent. Part II shows the role played by causation and culpability in framing the responsibility of prosecutors in discovery proceedings. Part III discusses the implications of discovery violations for § 1983 suits, in contrast to their role in direct and collateral review of the conviction itself. Part IV presents evidence from a solid body of literature in sociology and political science, explaining why the debate misses the essential understanding of how prosecutorial offices work. Part V tackles the thorny …

A Historical Comparison Of The Social Origins Of Broadcasting Policy, 1896–1920, Seth Ashley Apr 2014

A Historical Comparison Of The Social Origins Of Broadcasting Policy, 1896–1920, Seth Ashley

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using the United States and Great Britain as a comparative case study, this article employs a historical framework to consider the broad array of social, cultural, political, and economic contexts that led to divergent outcomes in the early development of broadcasting policy. This comparative historical analysis reveals the causal chains formed before the 1920s despite a period of post-war contingency. As a policy option, government control was removed in the United States but stayed in place in Britain after the war. This comparative approach can help to explain policy outcomes and inform modern policy debates.

Alaskan Lowbush Cranberry Extends Lifespan In C. Elegans, Justina Lipscomb Apr 2014

Alaskan Lowbush Cranberry Extends Lifespan In C. Elegans, Justina Lipscomb

2014 Research Day Posters

I tested the hypothesis that lowbush cranberries affect healthy aging in a dose dependent manner. This was done by observing the effect of cranberry extract on the lifespan of wildtype Caenorhabditis elegans. Results of the project may be useful in understanding what components of botanicals extend lifespan and provide neuronal protection. Using Alaskan botanicals provides a local focus, as well as having ethnobotanical value in studying the medical potential of traditional foods. The effect of lowbush cranberry was tested by running C. elegans lifespans at various concentrations of botanical extract. The extract was also tested for anthocyanin concentration, to provide …

Medication Adherence And Intervention To Create Success In Hypertensive African Americans In A Rural Setting, Laneita Davis

DNP Projects

Hypertension is a chronic disease that has been a major problem in the African American community for decades. Although numerous research studies have examined interventions to combat this disease, there has been very little research published that focused on African Americans with hypertension in a rural setting. Rural residents experience many difficulties in accessing healthcare services. This difficult access is a disadvantage that results in higher morbidity and mortality rates compared to those of their urban counterparts. Being from a small town in Mississippi, I have witnessed first hand the many barriers that are encountered. Individuals who live in a …
