Leadership In Food Policy: Raising A Foodie, Shelby Margaret Held
Leadership In Food Policy: Raising A Foodie, Shelby Margaret Held
General Human Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The target of this study was obesity’s problematic rise in America. It was noted in the research that children developed habits that would potentially last a lifetime and which also dictated their medical fate. The focus of this study was to identify and decrease the factors of childhood obesity through education, healthy eating, and changes in food choices through student-planned, model menus that would target nutrition and healthy choices. Research linked obesity to the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and chronic diseases in children through decreased physical activity and poor diet due to the lack of essential nutritional knowledge. Other …
Bound By Desire, Surpressed By Thoughts An Exploration Of African American Female Sexuality And Gender Through Spoken Word Poetry., Arelia Johnson
Bound By Desire, Surpressed By Thoughts An Exploration Of African American Female Sexuality And Gender Through Spoken Word Poetry., Arelia Johnson
Theses (Pre-2016)
Symbolic interactionists tell us that perceptions and role performances of sexuality and race are likely to vary across populations and can be expressed differently depending on who is doing the interpreting. Conflict theorists would argue, however, that stereotypes serve to maintain race, class, and gender relations. Some theorists view heteronormativity as an oppressive mechanism in human sexuality that imposes Eurocentric ideals on the ways individuals "do gender." African American women as a result of normalized heterosexuality, the modes of sexual conduct, and race, are susceptible to ridicule when performing gender and doing sexuality outside of normally prescribed situations. Overarching ideals …
Child Support: The Non-Custodial Parent’S Veil, Tossie Myoshi Alford
Child Support: The Non-Custodial Parent’S Veil, Tossie Myoshi Alford
Theses (Pre-2016)
The objective of this study is to explore the life of noncustodial parents. To do so, the personal impact of predetermined child support payments, the relationship with the custodial parent, and the relationship with the child were examined. This study explores whether child support is a salient factor in the daily life decisions of the noncustodial parent. By using William Edward Burghardt DuBois's concept of the veil as a theoretical framework, this study investigates whether the noncustodial parent's child support commitment results in an adverse effect on how that parent views himself or herself in different areas of life, versus …
Motivations For Targeted School Violence: Examining The Influence Of Social Rejection And Violent Video Games On Aggression, Maxwell R. Christensen
Motivations For Targeted School Violence: Examining The Influence Of Social Rejection And Violent Video Games On Aggression, Maxwell R. Christensen
Honors Scholar Theses
This Thesis Project investigates putative causes for mass-casualty violence in America’s schools. Both popular and scientific literatures suggest a variety of factors to explain these events, including violence in media such as movies and video games, gun culture, social constructions of masculinity, as well as social isolation, rejection, and disaffection among youth. Whereas such factors are not present in every incidence of mass violence and have yet to be demonstrated as explicitly causal variables, significant evidence points to social rejection in the form of bullying experiences and consumption of violent media such as first-person-shooter video games as representing key driving …
Can Childhood Animal Cruelty Be Learned?: Examining Age Of Onset And Recurrency, John A. Browne
Can Childhood Animal Cruelty Be Learned?: Examining Age Of Onset And Recurrency, John A. Browne
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Few studies have examined how animal cruelty can be a learned behavior. Using data collected from 257 male inmates at a Southern state medium-security prison, the current study seeks to replicate the Hensley, Tallichet and Dutkiewicz (2012) study. It examines the potential for the onset and recurrence of childhood animal cruelty to become a learned behavior, specifically in terms of how demographic characteristics and childhood experiences, such as witnessing animal cruelty and being mentally and/or physically abused, influence such behavior. In the current study, those who were physically abused as children reported engaging in recurrent animal cruelty. Those who reported …
Examining The Effects Of Demographic And Situational Factors On Childhood Animal Cruelty Methods, Mackenzie Grimes
Examining The Effects Of Demographic And Situational Factors On Childhood Animal Cruelty Methods, Mackenzie Grimes
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The current study seeks to replicate Hensley, Tallichet, and Dutkiewicz’s (2012) research on childhood animal cruelty methods by surveying 257 inmates in a medium-security Southern prison. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between participants’ demographic and situational factors and their individual methods of childhood animal cruelty. The study also investigated the predictive value of childhood animal cruelty methods on adult recurrent violent crimes. Logistic regression revealed that those who were younger when they first engaged in animal cruelty were more likely to drown, kick, burn, stab, and have sex with animals. Inmates who were not upset …
Effects Of Child Age And Type Of Detail Reported On Credibility Of Child Abuse Allegations, Natalie R. Kulisek
Effects Of Child Age And Type Of Detail Reported On Credibility Of Child Abuse Allegations, Natalie R. Kulisek
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
With repeated experiences, children’s reports of an event tend to contain fewer episodic, contextually embedded details and more inconsistencies. In one prior study, children who experienced a play event four times were rated by mock jurors as less accurate and less believable than children who experienced it once, although there was no difference in their actual accuracy (Connolly, Price, Lavoie, & Gordon, 2008). In the present study, 405 undergraduate students read one of four scenarios of a child sexual abuse allegation in a 2 (age: 4- or 10-years-old) by 2 (experience: single or multiple) factorial design. Overall, regardless of age, …
Environmental Determinism And The Existence Of Citizen Oversight Of The Police, Neal C. Baldwin
Environmental Determinism And The Existence Of Citizen Oversight Of The Police, Neal C. Baldwin
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Developments in citizen oversight of the police have not gone unnoticed by policing scholars. Though the concept has been controversial and heavily debated, noticeable increases in these mechanisms are evident on both national and international levels, especially in the most populated metropolitan areas in the United States. There is, however, a research gap in that available scholarly inquiries have not empirically examined the existence of citizen oversight within an explanatory framework, cognizant of plausible theoretical assumptions. This research examines the existence of citizen oversight of the police in the 100 largest cities/agencies. The analysis supports the contention that the presence …
The Fathers' Faith, The Children's Song: Missouri Lutheranism Encounters American Evangelicalism In Its Hymnals, Hymn Writers, And Hymns, 1889-1912, Jon Vieker
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Jon D. Vieker, "The Fathers' Faith, the Children's Song: Missouri Lutheranism Encounters American Evangelicalism in Its Hymnals, Hymn Writers, and Hymns, 1889-1912." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2014. 581 pp.
This dissertation offers an accounting of the hymnological sea change in the Missouri Synod as it transitioned from German into English toward the end of the nineteenth century. It explores how this immigrant, Lutheran church body brought a large portion of its German hymnody into English, while at the same time appropriating a substantial number of English-language hymns from the surrounding ecclesial culture of American Evangelicalism.
The dissertation is divided into …

Heavy Drinking Behaviors And Parental Influence Among Greek Affiliated College Students, Melodie Harris
Heavy Drinking Behaviors And Parental Influence Among Greek Affiliated College Students, Melodie Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heavy drinking behaviors have been observed in relation to fraternity and sorority membership. Some have argued that this relationship persists as a result of the drinking-conducive social environments of Greek organizations, but others have suggested that this relationship may be spurious. Using data from The Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (n = 10,904) the link between Greek affiliation, alcohol consumption, and parental influence was examined through the lens of social learning theory. It was hypothesized that members of Greek organizations would report higher levels of drinking compared to others and that the inclusion of the variable of …

Trust In Government Versus Fear Of Crime As Predictors Of Support For Authoritarian Policies In Ecuador: A Cross-Sectional Study, Clímaco David Cañarte Gutiérrez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Individuals interacting in an environment that exacerbates fear of crime and general distrust may face erosion of democratic values and perceive authoritarian policies as a solution to restore order. In Latin America historical widespread distrust in the government apparatus as well as fear of crime, have always been a topic of interest, not only for sociologists but also for political scientists and lawmakers. This study uses the LAPOP wave 2012 (Latin American Public Opinion) survey to assess Ecuadorians’ perceptions about trust in the government and fear of crime as predictors of support for authoritarian policies (mano dura). Logistic regressions …
Teacher Attitudes And Practices That Support Student Learning, Charles T. Sutton Mr.
Teacher Attitudes And Practices That Support Student Learning, Charles T. Sutton Mr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Generally in today’s classrooms educators have the responsibility to develop teaching practices that are best suited for a particular group of learners. Since the early days of 1-room schools, various teaching styles have been developed to accommodate a changing world. As the curriculum has broadened through the years, individual student needs have remained the focus as teachers have become more and more accountable for student learning.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate or identify how successful teachers manage their classrooms. It defines key student behavior issues that most teachers experience daily. The study further investigates the hypothesis …
Late Woodland Ceramic Decorative Styles In The Lewis Phase Of The Lower Ohio Valley: An Investigation Of Social Connectedness, Wesley Albertus Jackson
Late Woodland Ceramic Decorative Styles In The Lewis Phase Of The Lower Ohio Valley: An Investigation Of Social Connectedness, Wesley Albertus Jackson
Theses
This research focuses on the nature and extent of social relationships between two Late Woodland Lewis phase villages, ca. A.D. 650 to 900, in southern Illinois and western Kentucky. These villages are the Cypress Citadel site in Johnson County, Illinois (111JS76), and the McGilligan Creek site in Livingston County, Kentucky (19LV197). Relationships between the two communities are examined through a detailed comparison of their ceramic assemblages, especially the decorated pottery. Chi square and Cramer's V statistics are used along with the social interaction and information exchange theories to determine the most likely to association between the sites. The results suggest …

A Sociophonetic Study Of The Northern Cities Shift In Southwest Michigan, Sara Daniels
Theses
This study was designed to measure the perception of Southwest Michigan residents' perception of the Northern Cities Shift, and compare it to the perceptions of Southeast Michigan residents. Participants, recruited from the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo areas, were asked to complete a dialect boundary map of the United States in order to discern perceptions of American English dialects and accents and determine the dialect or accent that they most associate with the state of Michigan. Participants were also asked to listen to and judge the personality traits of seven different North American speakers. The results of this study indicate that …
Home Economics Programs Within Higher Education: A Typology, Sara Holtzman
Home Economics Programs Within Higher Education: A Typology, Sara Holtzman
Theses
Home economics programs through the 1920s served varied purposes within higher education. This typology addresses three types of home economics programs - teaching, extension, and academia- through the lens of characteristics, curricula, and examples. Reviewing historical events that lead into the differentiation of home economics programs throughout the United States offers unique insights into the reasons for the development of each type. This typology offers a different point of view in considering what home economics programs entailed, and defines the field as an intentional and academic program of study for the women of higher education.
Fish And Fruit For Food Justice Success, Nickelle A. Raschick
Fish And Fruit For Food Justice Success, Nickelle A. Raschick
Pomona Senior Theses
Given the critical role of food justice organizations in providing for the 49 million Americans who live in food insecure households, one of the most important questions that can be answered today is what determines the success of such an organization. This paper analyzes case studies from Sitka, AK and Portland, OR, aiming to communicate a better understanding of which factors result in an organization’s success and which factors lead it to failure. That information is used to establish guidelines that other organizations seeking to be relevant contributors to the food justice movement can follow. Ultimately, my research discovers that …

Single Mothers And Religiosity, Natalie J. Sheets
Single Mothers And Religiosity, Natalie J. Sheets
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines single mothers compared to coupled mothers and the differences in their public and private practices of religiosity. Data come from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 2007 U.S. Religious Landscape Survey. The study explores the influence of marital status between single and coupled mothers by using regression models to control for income, age, education, and race. Findings suggest that, while there are differences in single and coupled mothers in both their public and private practices of religiosity, the cause of these differences is being driven by other social factors rather than marital status alone. Income, …
Understanding The Motivations To Attend The Blue Ridge Gay Pride Festival In Asheville, North Carolina, Denise Adams
Understanding The Motivations To Attend The Blue Ridge Gay Pride Festival In Asheville, North Carolina, Denise Adams
All Theses
Local festivals and events are important tourist resources for a destination. They enhance economic benefits of the host area, improve the sense of community, and provide unique experiences to residents and tourists (Getz, 1997). Economically, tourism itself is recognized as the largest export earner in the world and an important provider of monetary exchange and employment, and over the last decades has sustained growth and increased diversification of product offerings (WTO, 2004). With this broadening of the market, various niches have emerged within the tourism sector including gay tourism. Gay consumers are deemed to be of special interest for the …

Prehistoric Life On The Mississippi Coast: Chronology And Function Of Ceramics From Three Shell Middens In The Grand Bay Estuary, Samuel Michael Huey
Master's Theses
This study analyzes ceramic assemblages with radio carbon dates produced from three archaeological sites, 22JA564, 22JA575, and 22JA633, with a view to determine the types and varieties of containers brought to and used at each site. The study area is located in the extreme eastern end of the Mississippi Sound in Jackson County, Mississippi. Methods employed in this research evaluate five variables: orifice diameter, vessel wall thickness, decoration, temper, and vessel shape. These variables were selected in order to determine the mechanical performance characteristics, as well as the formal and functional aspects of pottery assembled in this study. Determining form …
School, Disability Status, And Delinquency: An Examination Of Delinquency Among Rural Adolescents, Miriam Yvonne Brooks
School, Disability Status, And Delinquency: An Examination Of Delinquency Among Rural Adolescents, Miriam Yvonne Brooks
Master's Theses
Extensive research has been devoted to identifying risk-factors that contribute to the onset of juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, evidence has suggested that a disproportionate number of adolescents with learning disabilities are confined in juvenile correctional facilities. Yet, there is a substantial gap in empirical research that explores the possible relationship between learning disabilities and delinquent behavior. The purpose of the current study is to assess how specific learning disabilities relate to various forms of delinquent behavior among adolescents from rural high schools in a southern state. Specifically, this study aims to assess how Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia relate to drug use, …

The Impact Of Serotonin And Dopamine On Human Aggression: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Caroline Isabelle Jalain
The Impact Of Serotonin And Dopamine On Human Aggression: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Caroline Isabelle Jalain
Master's Theses
Aggressive behaviors can have serious impacts on both the population at-large and the criminal justice system (Fish, DeBold, & Miczek, 2002); but despite these potential repercussions, no adequate treatment options have been identified to prevent (or reduce) such consequential actions. An increasing amount of research has, however, developed (over the years) in response to these treatment needs. Recently, the disciplines of neurobiology and neuropsychology have discovered specific anti-aggressive treatments. Studies on the prefrontal cortex specifically reveal that certain areas of the brain, along with an array of chemical imbalances, are related to aggressive behavior (Barrett, Edinger, & Siegel, 1990). Specifically, …
A Paleopathological Analysis Of The Moran French Colonial Cemetery, Jennifer Lynn Funkhouser
A Paleopathological Analysis Of The Moran French Colonial Cemetery, Jennifer Lynn Funkhouser
Master's Theses
This research examines the health experiences of early eighteenth-century European immigrants to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Most were low-status individuals forcibly expulsed from France and brought to Biloxi to colonize Louisiana. Historical records report the immigration effort was poorly provisioned and that large numbers died from malnutrition and disease soon after arrival. The remains of 30 adults, presumably colonists from this period based on collagen dating and grave goods, have been recovered at the Moran site (22HR511). DNA analysis (n = 8) suggests all are European. Most are males, and only one lived past age 40. Estimated mean height is …

Herman Melville And Richard Wright: Camaraderie And Revolt, Linda Braune
Herman Melville And Richard Wright: Camaraderie And Revolt, Linda Braune
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In 1940, Black leftist writer Richard Wright, in his classic Native Son, sought out a great figure in the American Black canon, W. E. B. Du Bois, to understand and delineate double consciousness of Blacks. But it is surprising, perhaps, that Wright also drew from a major figure in the white canon, Herman Melville, in order to explore the overcoming of double consciousness and its effects. Although another tradition might interpret Melville’s Captain Ahab as “predicting” Wright’s story of Bigger Thomas, I suggest that it is the Pequod crew of Moby-Dick, not the driven and driving Captain, which compels Wright’s …
