Does Participating In A Music Program In High School Lead To Academic Achievement In College?, Vanessa Lynn Almaraz
Does Participating In A Music Program In High School Lead To Academic Achievement In College?, Vanessa Lynn Almaraz
Theses and Dissertations
Music education has and continues to become a constant issue in the cultural aspect and views of the educational system. How does music play a factor in our educational system? This thesis investigates the influence of how music plays in an individual’s educational development. Research has shown that while students in high school who participated in a music program, had significant increases in how they achieved academically in school, with this, students may also have the chance of excelling in their academics while attending a college or university. In this study, I measured the academic excellence amongst several social demographic …

Celebration
The collection of short stories I have written focuses on how people process (or do not process) tragedy, especially as related to themes of grief, memory, and faith. Most of the stories I have written are dysfunctional narratives in that they do not necessarily provide solid conclusions or solutions for the characters or readers, reflecting current trends in literature to move away from the didactic and moralistic in favor of the ambiguous and unstable, the hopeless and sorrowful. In "Wilderness", one of the pieces I wrote for my collection, Robert struggles with the death of his wife when he realizes …

The Relationship Between Self-Described Spirituality And An External Or Internal Locus Of Control, Elizabeth Dibley
The Relationship Between Self-Described Spirituality And An External Or Internal Locus Of Control, Elizabeth Dibley
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This study investigates the relationship between spirituality and locus of control using similar definitions and processes of previous research on the topic. This cross comparison of participants who categorize themselves into different groups of spirituality allows for the examination of how people of various spiritual groups can be described as having an internal or external locus of control. Items from questionnaires completed by an undergraduate population were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA to examine the direct relationship between the variables. A significant difference between the groups of participants of differing spiritualities and their locus of control was found. Participants who …
Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd
Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Male hypergamy, a social pattern rarely observed, has been prevalent throughout history as a symbol of social status for men. Hypergamy is the act of marrying into a higher social class or caste. This paper analyzes a few exemplary men ranging from the Italian Renaissance to Twenty-First Century America to make note of this pattern and attempts to understand how it affects the social order in middle-to-upper class society. The research, gathered from various books on class and society, presents an idea of various men who have, in some way or another, used their marriages as a social asset and …

Casualty, Causality And Chivalry: The Myth Of Chivalry And Racial Violence In Southern Literature, Nicholas Alexander Salvo
Casualty, Causality And Chivalry: The Myth Of Chivalry And Racial Violence In Southern Literature, Nicholas Alexander Salvo
Honors Theses
This honors thesis project uses history and literature to analyze the role of the myth of chivalry in mystifying racial violence and oppression in the American South. The central claim is that the myth of chivalry¿ and particularly the exaltation of the white woman¿ is a myth system used to justify racial violence, oppress white womanhood, and allow white patriarchy to maintain political, social and economic dominance. This project traces the role of literature, especially Sir Walter Scott¿s historical romance, in developing the foundational myths of a southern society based in violence, racial hierarchy and gender inequality. It then follows …

Diversity In Times Of Austerity: Documenting Resistance In The Academy, Tamara Leech, David Moscowitz, Terri Jett, Terri Carney, Ann Savage
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
What happens to feminism in the university is parallel to what happens to feminism in other venues under economic restructuring: while the impoverished nation is forced to cut social services and thereby send women back to the hierarchy of the family, the academy likewise reduces its footprint in interdisciplinary structures and contains academic feminists back to the hierarchy of departments and disciplines. When the family and the department become powerful arbiters of cultural values, women and feminist academics by and large suffer: they either accept a diminished role or are pushed to compete in a system they recognize as antithetical …

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
The Alfond Youth Center in Waterville, Maine is the only combined Boys and Girls Club and YMCA in the country. This organization meets the needs of the central Maine community by providing an after school program on a sliding scale based of family income, pay-for-play recreational opportunities, and other services such as dental care and counseling when needed. Rebound to Success, another Alfond Youth Center-sponsored program, is a juvenile diversion program for first time offenders aged 11-18 in Kennebec and Somerset Counties. Most of the crimes the participants have committed are drug defined or related offenses (ie. possession or use, …

Community Dental Center, Randall Person, Sarah Mann, Susan Fleurant, Lily Cabour
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
We are writing a grant in partnership with a local nonprofit, the Community Dental Center in Waterville. The Community Dental Center provides comprehensive dental care for low-income patients in Kennebec and Somerset counties. The grant money would fund two programs targeting specific, at-risk populations of women in Central Maine. One program focuses on dental health education for teenage mothers at the Maine Childrens Home. The second program is the provision of dental services for victims of domestic violence. Dental health has been shown to directly influence school and work attendance, overall health, and self-esteem. With proper care and education, dental …

Passing And Transcendence In Political Identities And Socioeconomic Status, Sophie Hamblett, Ginger Brooker, Samuel Poulin, Megan Mackenzie
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
This study will examine passing, a phenomenon that occurs when an individual tries to hide a part of their identity, or takes on a new false identity in order to fit in with a certain social context. Passing might be especially important in a college setting, where students are in a stage of emerging adulthood and exploring new identities. This process can occur with all sorts of identity, commonly one that makes the individual a minority. In our study, we will focus specifically on passing in the areas of race and socioeconomic status, which has, thus far, not been addressed by …
Re-Defining Mental Illness, Anna Krauss
Re-Defining Mental Illness, Anna Krauss
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
As an often ostracized group from society, the mentally ills path to social acceptance is not easy. To fully understand our current health care system in regards to mental illness, the steps one takes when diagnosed as mentally ill as well, as the hardships one will face, this paper will address the question: to what extent is the effectiveness of modern diagnosis and treatments on mental illnesses? From sociological theory to the biological sciences, this topic has been closely scrutinized and identified as a prevalent issue in our society. Due to the complexity of this topic, however, no one definite …
It's Just A Number: Influences Of Body Image Pressures On Diii Female Athletes, Christina Mccourt
It's Just A Number: Influences Of Body Image Pressures On Diii Female Athletes, Christina Mccourt
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
There are strong societal norms around what it means to be a woman and be an athlete. These norms get reinforced so much that female athletes internalize these ideas to the point that they begin to change their habits to better fit the demands of society. Being an athlete at a high level creates physical pressures for young women, but the extra mental pressures forced upon them can be detrimental both mentally and physically. The months I spent researching female athletes at Colby were intended to help answer several questions. The first was what pressures female athletes felt that they …
Anthropogenic Effects On The Arctic, Sara Miller, Sarah Large
Anthropogenic Effects On The Arctic, Sara Miller, Sarah Large
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
The Arctic is a sensitive location that has been affected greatly by climate change and the anthropogenic factors that contribute to global warming. It is critical to research the Arctic because the effects are significant and can be seen globally. The average temperature in the Arctic is increasing twice as fast as the rest of the world, which is causing the ice caps and permafrost to melt. Permafrost traps carbon and methane, and as permafrost melts these elements are released into the atmosphere. Since the conditions of the Arctic are changing local species are affected due to their altered habit. …
Career Trajectories In Finance: Individual Motivations And Navigating External Influences, Kathryn Griffin
Career Trajectories In Finance: Individual Motivations And Navigating External Influences, Kathryn Griffin
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
The purpose of this qualitative sociological research study is to look at the career trajectories of Colby alumni currently working in finance in addition to seeing if variables such as gender and the cohort they graduated in may have played a role in their career development. I am interested in how institutional practices within American society in general, and the financial sector specifically, may perpetuate gender inequality or gendered patterns of labor market participation. With these findings, I hope to paint a picture as to what Colby graduates may face if they are interested in pursuing the field of finance …
Peer Acceptance And The Emotional Well-Being Of Disabled Individuals, Abigail Burmeister
Peer Acceptance And The Emotional Well-Being Of Disabled Individuals, Abigail Burmeister
Perspectives
This study is about how knowing someone with a disability affects an individual’s level of acceptance for others who have a disability. In addition, this paper will also look at previous research on how different levels of peer acceptance affect the emotional well-being of those with disabilities. Under the supervision of our professor and the university staff, my classmates from Methods of Sociological Research at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and I compiled a list of research questions pertaining to our individual studies and sent the link to our Qualtrics survey to approximately 300 other UNH students via Facebook …
Effects Of Maternal Depression On Family Food Insecurity, Kelly Noonan, Hope Corman, Nancy E. Reichman
Effects Of Maternal Depression On Family Food Insecurity, Kelly Noonan, Hope Corman, Nancy E. Reichman
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Theory suggests that adverse life events—such as unemployment or health shocks—can result in food insecurity, which has increased substantially in the U.S. over the past decade alongside the obesity epidemic. We test this proposition by estimating the effects of a specific and salient mental health event—maternal depression during the postpartum year—on child and family food insecurity. Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study—Birth Cohort, we estimate the effects of maternal depression on food insecurity using both single- and twostage models, and explore potential buffering effects of relevant public assistance programs and supports. We find that moderate to severe maternal …
