Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson May 2014

Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines whether there is a relationship between social capital and participation in academic service-learning courses within higher education. Through designing, implementing, and analyzing a survey which was given to students enrolled in courses with an academic service-learning component at Eastern Michigan University (n=127), the role between these two variables was tested. Social capital was measured through the total number of relationships formed at participants’ academic service learning site, whether these relationships were strong or weak ties; the frequency of interaction with said ties; and individuals who could be used as a reference. Results suggest the number of individuals …

National Identity At The Margins Of Europe: History, Affect And Museums In Slovenia, Robert Booth May 2014

National Identity At The Margins Of Europe: History, Affect And Museums In Slovenia, Robert Booth

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the historical and idiographic aspects of national identity in Slovenia and brings empirical data to bear on the question of the effect of museums and their identity narratives on citizen museum attendees. Museums have often been portrayed as such sites of identity construction and as important state-making and state-maintaining institutions that educate citizens on the history and heritage of nationhood and nationality. This empirical data is coupled with ethnographic and discourse analytic approaches to demonstrate that the apprehension of identity is predicated on broader historical, socio-political, emotional, moral and economic aspects of society. This dissertation specifically engages …

Building A Better Laboratory: The Federal Role In Promoting Health System Experimentation, Kristin Madison May 2014

Building A Better Laboratory: The Federal Role In Promoting Health System Experimentation, Kristin Madison

Pepperdine Law Review

While expanding federal involvement in the health care system, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) preserves states' roles as policy laboratories and private providers' roles as health care delivery laboratories. State-based and provider-based laboratories suffer from many shortcomings, however, as mechanisms to develop, evaluate, and facilitate diffusion of reforms within the health system. This Article argues that the federal government can take steps to address these shortcomings. It first briefly reviews ACA provisions that promote policy and delivery experimentation. It then suggests that by tying funding to policy outcomes, making use of regulatory variation and regulatory menus, and …

Environmental Disasters And Policy: Fear Prompts Awareness, Ashley K. Dunn May 2014

Environmental Disasters And Policy: Fear Prompts Awareness, Ashley K. Dunn

2014 Student Theses

The affect that environmental disasters have on public attitudes directly affects policy-making. This paper explores the implications and results of disasters on environmental policy-making. Various disciplines shed light as to why a disaster can spur awareness. Disasters directly threaten peoples lives and way of living. These threats result in a higher level of public awareness. The use of environmental psychology explains why people tend to ignore environmental problems until they become imminent and personal. Environmental history sheds light upon particular instances of environmental disasters. The three major environmental disasters covered are the Exxon ValdezOil Spill in Prince William Sound, …

A Flaw In The Design: American Sprawl And Climate Change, Gregory Behl May 2014

A Flaw In The Design: American Sprawl And Climate Change, Gregory Behl

2014 Student Theses

The physical landscape of the United States has developed to a point that it has become detrimental to the health of its citizens and the natural environment. Designed around abundant fossil fuels, the sprawling panorama Americans call home has significantly contributed to a decline in global ecosystem services. Using historical precedence as a guide for the constant improvement of surrounding environs has led to the nation’s exorbitant resource use and beyond sustainable emissions rates required by the physical design of the man-made landscape. These mandates, embodied in a physical design, further reinforce isolation and contribute to the psychological denial about …

Truth And Conflict In The Catholic Church: Catholic Jewish Dialogue, Nadia Pandolfo May 2014

Truth And Conflict In The Catholic Church: Catholic Jewish Dialogue, Nadia Pandolfo

LMU Theses and Dissertations

A dispute between Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Walter Kasper beginning in the 1960s reveals two competing worldviews within the contemporary Roman Catholic Church with regard to Catholic-Jewish relations: An ontological approach, represented by Ratzinger, which understands the truth to be eternal, unchanging and handed down from above, and a historicalphenomenological approach, represented by Kasper, which understands human experience as dynamically shaping conceptions of the truth. These competing worldviews hold further theological implications (anthropological, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiological, and missiological) in terms of how Catholics approach and understand their relationship with Judaism. This thesis will argue that because Kasper’s worldview is more …

The Effects Of A Division I Men's Ice Hockey Season On Strength And Power, Emily T. Webster May 2014

The Effects Of A Division I Men's Ice Hockey Season On Strength And Power, Emily T. Webster

Master's Theses

Measures of strength and power were taken during a pre-season training segment in Divison I men’s ice hockey as well as two weeks post-season in order to determine the changes that occurred in a twenty-one week season of play. All subjects performed a concurrent resistance training protocol that aimed to develop power, strength, and minimize the risk for potential injury that led to missed game-playing time. The men’s ice hockey athletes were practicing an average of four days a week with the sport coaches in addition to the resistance training sessions with the primary strength and conditioning coach. The mean …

A Historical-Institutional Study Of The Welfare Systems In The United States And Sweden: Net Social Wage Approach, Sarah Elliott Blank May 2014

A Historical-Institutional Study Of The Welfare Systems In The United States And Sweden: Net Social Wage Approach, Sarah Elliott Blank

Honors Theses

In this study I first look at the historical developments of the welfare systems in Sweden and the United States to understand why these countries have produced two distinct systems over the years. After understanding their historical context I turn to the question of the relationship between the welfare system and economic growth. Policy makers and the mainstream media commonly cite the critique that through government deficit and public debt, welfare systems are a drag on the economy. By calculating the net social wage, the difference in taxes paid and benefits received by workers, I test this hypothesis to see …

The Ups And Downs In Women's Employment—Shifting Composition Or Behavior From 1970 To 2010?, Kristin E. Smith May 2014

The Ups And Downs In Women's Employment—Shifting Composition Or Behavior From 1970 To 2010?, Kristin E. Smith

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper tracks factors contributing to the ups and downs in women’s employment from 1970 to 2010 using regression decompositions focusing on whether changes are due to shifts in the means (composition of women) or due to shifts in coefficients (inclinations of women to work for pay). Compositional shifts in education exerted a positive effect on women’s employment across all decades, while shifts in the composition of other family income, particularly at the highest deciles, depressed married women’s employment over the 1990s contributing to the slowdown in this decade. A positive coefficient effect of education was found in all decades, …

Loneliness: How Superficial Relationships, Identity Gaps, And Social Support Contribute To Feelings Of Loneliness At Pepperdine University, Jessica L. Rhodes May 2014

Loneliness: How Superficial Relationships, Identity Gaps, And Social Support Contribute To Feelings Of Loneliness At Pepperdine University, Jessica L. Rhodes

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

This study aims to understand the relationship between feelings of loneliness and the amount of self- disclosure in relationships, inconsistencies in the portrayal of an individual’s identity to other people, and the amount of social support felt in relationships. This study addresses feelings of loneliness reported in freshman students at Pepperdine University. Our findings suggest that deficiencies in self- disclosure negatively correlated with feelings of loneliness, as did feelings of a stronger social support system exhibit a negative correlation, but a positive impact among students in response to feelings of loneliness. Identity gaps were also found to be a prominent …
